Guildhall Tavern is actually a French restaurant, with some English favorites on the menu. We ended up in Poole after getting off our cruise ship turned into a nightmare, so we didn't get the chance to go to London. Our friend found this restaurant online in the Michelin Guide - it is a "Michelin plate" and has a "good standard" rating. We were seated in a little section/room with a door that opens to outside - nice and private.
It was my goal to have a proper fish and chips meal while in the UK, so, of course, that's what I ordered. The lunch menu gives options for just a starter, or one, two, or three courses. I got two courses - battered haddock with house tartar, peas, and fries as my main, and a cheese plate for dessert. The plate was nicely presented and the fish was perfect - golden, crispy fried on the outside, and moist and flaky inside, and the homemade tartar sauce was creamy and flavorful without being too heavy. They bring bread and olives for you while you wait for your meal, so the one piece of fish and fries was really filling.
The cheese plate had two matured French cheeses (one was blue) and some fruit and nuts. They took the cheese out of the fridge for me when I ordered so that it would be at a nice temperature for dessert - great idea. I was already full at this point but the cheese was delicious, great small portion, and a perfect way to end my meal.
Service was top-notch - friendly, attentive, and timely. Prices for the lunch specials were very reasonable - mine was 17 pounds for the two courses, and portions are fair, depending on what you order.
