Guilin is a nice change from big cities like Shanghai, Bejing or Guangzhou, as it is much smaller and therefore easier to explore.
The scenic area is basically a river-system running within the city, connecting some broader parts that the Chinese call lakes. Tours are offered and due to the inexplicable addiction of the Chinese to LEDs and blinking lights, the night tour is much more popular than the one during the day. As on every tour done, the "guides" are literally talking all the time, so prepare for 70' of Chinese loudspeaker bombardment when going on a tour, sometimes even including singing by the guides.
Also to be noticed: starting point of the tour might not necessarily be the end point, so be aware.
