"Situated just off Xiamen, this tiny island is a UNESCO World Heritage site (inscribed July 2017) known for its cluster of colonial-style mansions from its days as a residence for Western traders and diplomats and for a deep, living musical culture. Its name evokes sound—‘drum’ and ‘waves’—and the surf is said to beat like a drum; atmospheric streets regularly carry violin and erhu strains. The island claims the highest piano ownership per capita in the country, has produced celebrated musicians, and continues to nurture young talent, making music an integral part of everyday life rather than just a tourist draw." - Caleb Ming

This is an amazing island full of natural beauty and charming I show and restaurants. You can easily make a full day here and not cover all there is to see. The gardens are tranquil and beautiful. The grottoes are amazing. There are beaches and museums that will captivate you with the skill and history. Make a day of this gorgeous island.

Beautiful small island, with a lot of different kinds of trees and plants, piano and organ museum, gardens, small shops and restaurants, no traffic at all except electric golf carts. It is a pitty that swimming is forbiden due the strong current and riffs, the only thing that I strughled is hummidity but everything else was perfect!

A peacefully place, only 10-15 minutes ferry journey. Be prepared to walk whole day through the history of conquering the island by many countries.

Gulangyu is a must to visit in Xiamen. Since, I am not a Chinese speaker. I attached an English verision brochure of Gulangyu Island… complete with the tips… ferry schedule etc

Beautiful island for a day trip in Xiamen, even better if stay overnight. No cars allowed on island, the only transportation are the 12 electric buggies.

A little island 20 mins ferry away from Xiamen. Popular with locals and tourists. As one of the first port opened for commercial trading in the past, the island is scattered with lots of buildings architecture of western influence. Almost every building carries its own story. I feel like i am in an entire different world while i am there. The only damper is the commercialised streets with local street vendors selling touristy items.

Very nice island close to Xiamen (30min ferry ride) with relaxed gardens, some historical international buildings from its trade linked past and a temple on the peak with some great views.
