An In-Depth Guide to Seeing the Maldives on a Budget in 2025

"Mentioned as one of the prettier, quieter islands reachable from the more touristy hubs, Gulhi is a recommended nearby island to visit if you want a less-developed, more peaceful beach experience." - Matthew Kepnes

A small Island for you to visit. But when comparing with the maafushi island, Maafushi better to stay and for activities.

Great for a short holiday. Around 5 nights would be plenty. It’s a small island so your only option is to go to the beach and relax. It’ll be worth doing the all day snorkelling as we did it and it’s amazing. The food is pretty bad all over this island so bear that in mind and eat simply.

During my last visit, I stayed on Maafushi Island, and the next day, we took a trip to Gulhi Island. Located just 35 minutes by speedboat from Maafushi and 25-30 minutes from Velana International Airport, Gulhi is a small yet charming island that offers a more peaceful and intimate experience compared to its livelier neighbors. At just 0.4 kilometers long, Gulhi remains less crowded, making it an ideal getaway for those seeking relaxation and natural beauty. The island has a handful of guesthouses and hotels, ensuring a quiet and comfortable stay. Walking around, you’ll come across a mosque, a school, and a play area for children, adding to its authentic local charm. One of Gulhi’s main highlights is its stunning Bikini Beach, considered one of the most beautiful in the Maldives. Here, visitors can freely sunbathe and swim in the calm, shallow waters. The island is also an excellent destination for snorkeling, diving, fishing, paddleboarding, and even surfing at the nearby breaks. Despite its small size, Gulhi offers local cafés and restaurants serving fresh seafood and traditional Maldivian dishes, allowing visitors to enjoy delicious meals at affordable prices. Unlike Maafushi, Gulhi is quieter and more laid-back, making it perfect for couples, honeymooners, and travelers looking for a peaceful beach holiday away from crowds. There are no bars on the island due to local customs, but for those looking to enjoy a drink, alcohol is available on nearby safari boats just a short ride away.

From the southern atoll, the island with the most beautiful sea and its crystal clear waters with different tones and it is the worst preserved garbage island 😱 horrible, you cannot describe the bad feeling when visiting this island. Its surroundings are pitiful and there are many dead corals on South Beach 😭.... On the other hand, its waters are wonderful!!! The Government should act if they want quality tourism!!

Gulhi Island: A Hidden Maldivian Paradise Gulhi Island is a small, peaceful island in the Maldives, perfect for travelers seeking natural beauty and local culture. Just 30 minutes by speedboat from Malé, Gulhi is easy to access and offers a tranquil escape from the bustling city or crowded resort islands. The island’s highlight is its pristine bikini beach, where powdery white sand meets crystal-clear turquoise waters. It’s an ideal spot for sunbathing, swimming, or snorkeling. The nearby coral reefs teem with marine life, including tropical fish and turtles, making it a haven for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts. Gulhi also provides an authentic glimpse into local Maldivian life. Visitors can interact with the friendly fishing community, enjoy traditional cuisine, and explore local crafts. Unlike larger islands, Gulhi maintains a calm and intimate atmosphere, with affordable guesthouses offering cozy accommodations and warm hospitality. While nightlife and dining options are limited, Gulhi’s simplicity and natural charm make it ideal for families and couples looking to unwind. A one- or two-night stay is enough to enjoy its beauty and immerse yourself in its culture. Gulhi is a true hidden gem that blends affordability, serenity, and the authentic Maldivian experience.

Gulhi is a hidden gem in the Maldives, offering the perfect mix of local island charm and stunning tropical beauty. Unlike crowded resorts, Gulhi provides an authentic Maldivian experience with pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and a relaxed atmosphere. The Bikini Beach is one of the best in the Maldives, with soft white sand and amazing snorkeling opportunities right off the shore. The island is small and walkable, with friendly locals, delicious seafood restaurants, and a peaceful vibe. It’s an excellent choice for budget travelers who want a taste of paradise without the high resort prices. Perfect for couples, solo travelers, and families looking for a quiet, beautiful getaway. Highly recommended!

It is full of trash, rubble from old buildings all around the island. The only place left untached is bikini beach, the rest is just a dumping site.

Amazing public island to visit in Maldives. The island has harbour on one side for boats access and bikini Beach or private on the other side. The bikini Beach is the finest beach where the water is shallow and blue in color. The swing in the middle of the waters saying I LOVE GULHI is amazing. The island has got multiple restaurants and grocery stores. The local people are very friendly. You can also fine souvenir shops to buy some good souvenirs. Overall, amazing island in Maldives.
