An important place! We were there for the Oyster Roast and we shown different elements of the Museum by the most charming youngsters anywhere! The music was fabulous and I loved watching the oyster process and speaking with the man in charge there. Absolutely wonderful!

I hate to give this a one star but it appears to be closed with a no trespassing sign in the parking lot. Neither their Website or google business page mentioned that it’s not currently open. The website mentioned that they are doing g renovations but nothing about being closed. Perhaps someone on the board could update their google business page / website with current information. I came this way because I was interested in the museum after reading the book Sweetgrass…disappointed it’s not open. Hope it reopens one day!

We drove 6 hours to the (2022) Gullah Food Festival. There was no parking onsite for visitors so we were directed to a church back down the road that provided one shuttle. They had 4 guys in the street directly in front of the event location giving parking instructions. They would have been better served closer to the actual parking location; BEFORE we drove to event location. I was disappointed in the size of the event. There were only about 6 or 7 food vendors, a couple of people selling their wares and some live presentations on one small stage throughout the day. The presentations were nice but we didn’t want to just sit and wait for whoever was coming up next. It would have mean nice to have other things to do. We left after each getting a meal. The food that we had, from 2 different vendors, was mediocre at best. We didn’t go into the small shed like structure that they call the museum.

This place was not open per their Google instructions/information. Opens M W F by appointment only ?? I called ahead of traveling to find from a recording that the information could be missed because the name and new hours were on the end of a recording that did not initially announce where I had reached. Would have been very unfortunate if folk traveled specifically to see this place. Maybe next trip.

They're closed for renovations. That information should have been updated online SOMEWHERE. Didn't find that out until after the hour drive, not sure how far the two cars that were behind me drove either. Won't try again.

Enjoyed the Gullah Festival that was held here and loved all of the history and memories that folks shared. The history and the culture truly needs to be preserved and that's what they're doing. I'd definitely visit again for the next event.

Gulla historical land is a great place to visit. The energy is felt from the stories and entertainment..

Plan ahead and get tickets. We went in a day it was closed. Google had it listed as open.

Yelp
The Museum is a work in progress. Reservations are required, unbeknownst to us. Currently, from what I understand you receive a history lesson (background of the Gullah), have q&a, then you can take a walk around to visit some of the original home places. We did have a quick visit with Dr. Cohen. Although she was "closing up shop " for the day reason for the stars given), we appreciate the brief chat and information provided. Once up and in full operation, I'll have to return for a history lesson and adjust my stars.

Yelp
My husband & I REALLY lucked up & just so happened to be in town for the 8th Annual Gullah Food Festival! I loved the whole vibe here! The festival was from 11am- 4pm. Next time, we'll be sure to get there earlier, we got there a little before 1pm. The crab rice & oxtails were gone, but we still enjoyed the food we got: curry goat with rice & peas, cabbage, plantains, & Mac & cheese, & an order of jambalaya. We were also fortunate enough to be able to listen to the music & story-telling by Ron & Natalie Daise (from Gullah Gullah Island)! They were so inspiring! I loved everything about this festival. I would love to return next year; hopefully with our daughters.

Yelp
The Gullah Museum of Hilton Head Island is developing. Currently there is a very good $25.00 tour, and plans call for the 9th Annual Gullah Food Festival. There will be great music, storytelling, bouncy houses and face painting for the kids. Food vendors will be available for non-seafood eaters.
