I recently stayed at the Gundersen Hotel & Suites in La Crosse and had mixed feelings about the experience.
The good: The rooms were very clean, modern, and comfortable. The hotel itself is well-maintained, with nice facilities that felt updated and thoughtfully designed. The location is especially convenient if you’re visiting the hospital or nearby areas, and there’s plenty of parking.
The not-so-good: Unfortunately, the front desk staff left a lot to be desired. They were unwelcoming and unhelpful throughout our stay. It really set a negative tone.
One of the biggest issues was breakfast. We went down at 8:45 AM (well within the posted breakfast hours), and almost everything was empty—eggs, waffles, meat, and fruit were all gone. The staff were clearly aware but didn’t make any effort to restock or communicate with guests about it. Even more frustrating, they were actively draining juice trays and restocking maple syrup bottles—but not replenishing any of the actual food. It felt careless and dismissive of the guest experience.
Bottom line: While the rooms and amenities are solid, the poor customer service and lack of attention to guest needs—especially at the front desk and during breakfast—really took away from the experience. I wouldn’t recommend this hotel unless major improvements are made in staff training and guest care.
