Gunter Hotel

Nice historic hotel. We stayed in the "Roy Clark" room. Unfortunately when we got there, the room was only half cleaned. Fortunately, the front desk came up, grabbed the dirty towels, and gave us new ones. The bed is firm, not the best for side sleeping but good for the back. Outside of that, it was a pleasant stay. The staircase is amazing! The little jail cell in the basement was interesting, as was the coal cart. Just a shame the Speakeasy was also closed permanently. I did not see any ghosts. However, I "thought" I felt someone pressing down on the end of the bed.

No service except for 3-5pm when you are expected to check in. Came after, had a key in a lock box, but was not able to get any ice. Absolutely no one around to help with anything. Couldn't even get ice. There are a ton of people who live here. They seem nice.

At least the air conditioning worked but no refrig, microwave or coffee maker as stated by Trip Advisor. Ice is only available until 8pm. It’s pretty much a dive. Our room wasn’t cleaned but the bed was made. Obvious and visible items left by the previous person. No restaurant - it closed. Trip Advisor needs to update their information on amenities, etc. to be more reflective of the actual facility. I may be leaving early.

It is a vintage hotel and shows signs of age, but is located in the heart of the city. Ample free parking out back. Very friendly staff who works to accommodate your check-in.

Upon arriving in our room and laying on our bed, we discovered that our behinds sank into a very old and used mattress. It was almost like there was a huge canyon that our behinds sank into. The mattress needs to be badly replaced. Secondly, on day 2 of our 3 day stay, we put the sign on the door asking for housekeeping to change the sheets and towels, etc. No one came in. This morning, we asked the front desk (there wasn’t anyone at the front desk and 8:30 on Saturday or Sunday…they arrive at 10:00) about this and were told that normally housekeeping doesn’t pick up while people are in their rooms. Plus, they all leave at 1:00 pm. Then why even have those doorknob signs if it’s not going to be looked at? As for location, it’s wonderful as is western Maryland. It’s the only saving grace.

Darling old hotel. Beautiful antiques everywhere and comfy room - clean, comfortable bed, great water pressure for shower (silly,but important). Staff was very friendly. I would definitely stay here again.

Great spot in a little town..The hotel needs some updating&renovations, but it is located in the heart of Frostburg and it has a bar/restaurant.. also has a mini Museum in the basement which is pretty cool

I have stayed here,many, many times. Alyssa, the front desk manager, does a tremendous job and always goes out of her way to make the stay enjoyable. It is an ideal location to explore the town. The connected Toasted Goat bar/restaurant is a nice added feature. The Speakeasy in the basement is a special hideaway. The hotel rooms are quaint and always on point. I love this place.

The Hotel Gunter is a fine place for a one or two night stay while exploring Frostburg, and the Great Allegheny Passage trail. As a historic hotel, it doesn't have the corporate niceties of a modern chain, but does have large rooms, large bathrooms and historic charm. Unfortunately, the attached Toasted Goat restaurant has closed, but it's centrally located to all the best of Frostburg - Sand Springs and Clatter restaurants, and the fantastic Great Allegheny Passage. The lobby has a grand staircase and a piano from the 1800s. The basement has a museum and the remains of a jail. It's the best place for a short stay in the area.

Spooky and wonderful. This wouldn't be my choice for an extended stay but for a night or 2 it's marvelous! The hotel is like stepping into another universe. I think they have let some maintenance go to the wayside because just a few minor improvements and this would really sing! The highlight of the whole place has got to be the basement dungeon. Yes your read that correctly. The bars/restaurants on property are surprisingly refined too. And so even if you're not staying at the hotel this would definitely be a great stop while in the area.

One of the most atmospheric hotels I have ever stayed in...old west glamor mingled with a healthy dose of "The Shining." Avoid the boring corporate chains and support historic hotels like Hotel Gunter. Has great central location in Frostburg, large communal balconies perfect for breakfast coffess, and nice restaurant / speakeasy as well.

Old old hotel! So quirky and cool but not perfect. Lots of nice architectural features but given age little run down around edges (some peeling wall paper, scuffed worn carpet, etc.) - still very welcoming, clean, comfortable! Basic room is SMALL- but you can upgrade to much better rooms. Their in house cable is satellite and limited and their router wont accomodate a Chromecast. No room service but front desk sells coffee and ice cream and there is restaurant right off lobby. Little store that sells local booze off lobby too. Location is great- can access all of Frostburg by foot. Staff friendly. Museum in basement funky and cool with nice large bar (only open special events it seems.). Overall given price not bad place to spend a day or two! We'd go back and get bigger room next time!

The rooms are over-priced, dirty carpets, nail holes in the wall, no room phone and the owner was extremely rude. The wait staff, however, (mostly FSU students) were kind and professional. The photos of the rooms do not accurately depict the true conditions. Additionally, there is no coffee bar set up in the morning in a common area so that a paying customer can access the advertised 'free morning coffee'. I was yelled at for walking through the only access door to get coffee by the owner. No front desk staff on a Saturday morning. There were no signs that read 'Employees Only' or 'Do Not Enter'. I am a disabled senior citizen, and more importantly, a PAYING guest who was treated very rudely. I would not recommend staying in the Hotel Gunter. Shabby is being kind.

Beautiful and historic Hotel Gunter in Frostburg, Maryland. The owners are super and so are the staff. Great Toasted Goat Winery is part of the hotel and the food is awesome.

Magnificent historical landmark. Recently refurbished. Rooms are beautiful, spacious and elegant. Staff are extra efficient and friendly. Room has everything you could possibly need even washer and dryer. Bed is top quality and super comfortable. Obviously there is great attention to details in every aspect of the accommodation. Love this place, wonderful experience, will definitely come back. So happy I got to spend my birthday celebration in such spectacular classy surroundings.

Gunter Hotel has possibly the friendliest staff I've ever encountered. I booked this hotel through Expedia based solely off the star rating. I knew nothing about it. I called en route just to make sure arriving around 11:30pm wasn't going to be a problem. I was informed staff usually left around 11, but she would be willing to stay so I could check-in. This hotel is full of history. Walking through its doors is like stepping back in time. I wish I had realized when I made the reservations and had allowed time to explore and experience the tour. If you're looking for the most modern amenities, this is not the hotel for you. But the rooms were charming, clean, and comfortable. The parking lot (across a dark, back alley, felt a little scary (I'm a woman and I arrived late with my young daughter), but one of the hotel staff, whom I had just spoken with about where to park, greeted me as he was leaving and reiterated how to find the lobby (through the back entrance). I will definitely be back.
