Savoring the Flavors of Penang - AFAR

"A major seaside hawker complex offering one of the city's widest selections of street-food vendors, notable for dishes like char koay kak (fried rice cake with radish, bean sprouts, egg and chili powder) and a barbecue roasting station; practical tip: secure seating before ordering food due to high demand." - AFAR

This place has a lot of different food options. It's pretty packed in here right now. Finding a table might be a challenge. I'd recommend coming a bit earlier next time. Hopefully, it'll be less crowded then.

Penang classics served in a bustling outdoor area. You order from the stores and there’s free seating available. Food is very affordable and authentic. Would highly recommend if you’re looking to get authentic local classics.

Came on a Saturday. Terrible jam around the area and you can definitely get better food elsewhere. The 71 char koay teow was average, got misled by the queue.. No wok hey, plain taste but ingredients compensated with 4 prawns. The satay pork was dry and lean. Maybe the good stalls were closed.

Visited in Nov 2024. Had the duck egg fried kuay teow, duck egg oyster omelette, malay satay, nasi lemak kukis cilibilis, fried chicken drumstick, and Aiyu lychee drinks. Generally above average. Fairly priced. The meal average a 2.8/5

Very cool market, with the opportunity to taste carious typical dishes. Fried crabs are good, worth a try for 5 Ringgit. Char kwei teow was also good, nice price quantity ratio for 10 Ringgit. The typical Nasi lemak is also fine, average cost 8 Ringgit. One can also taste Rojak, choosing the individual ingredients to build the dish.

It's at the roundabout and open air, so watch out for rain. On weekdays not all stalls are opened. Packed on weekends or holidays. Food taste - used to be good maybe 20 to 10 yrs ago? Had char keow teow - long q but service was quite fast as the uncle and auntie take turns to cook non-stop. It was soft and a bit salty type (had duck egg, it tasted like salted egg haha). The drinks service are fast (Chinese stall) and friendly. Rojak had lots of hard fruits n fried snacks (didn't like it). Satay must buy 10 sticks. Chicken meat was ok. Just come here try once is enough for a looong time. There are better local food but this place has lots of variety n is multi-races - there are Malay and Indian stalls too. Majority is Chinese Malaysian stalls. Nearby has a few malls n park along the stretch. The tables are assigned to the nearby stalls. You have to purchase sth from the stall. If you don't purchase from the stall, they may ask u to sit elsewhere. If you are ordering from multiple stalls, remember table # or nearby stall name. Some stalls will deliver to your table, some you q and collect + pay own food.

We had the choice of eating in the mall but it was way too crowded. We decided to eat at the hawker center next to it, less people. We had the wan tan mee, stingray, shark fin soup, sugar cane juice, pasembur, and otah - fish paste. Prices were very cheap. Pasembur was an okay dish, I thought the guy was going to heat it up since they were sitting out. It’s not something that I would ever get again. The wan tan mee, stingray, and otah were very good. Shark fin soup wasn’t bad, I just wanted to try it. The juices were good and they gave you these huge cups. Definitely get the sugar cane juice. The guy that does the stingray, his stall can get very busy just a fyi. Tables won’t be the cleanest but there is someone that cleans them.

This grilled fish is the best. Yes it’s a bit pricy in a market, a piece of fillet is 45. Yet it is so fresh, tender and the paste on top is very delicious. Satay I tried just very mediocre.
