Harbor Springs, Michigan Is the Best Small U.S. Town for a Lake Vacation in 2024

"A beloved cash-or-check-only sandwich counter and wine shop that often has a line out the door; the counter forbids tomatoes, an idiosyncrasy that locals embrace. Patrons can build their own handhelds or opt for the popular Train Wreck meat-lover’s sandwich, built on thick-sliced homemade bread and brightened by a pungent house-made garlic-horseradish deli sauce." - Leilani Marie Labong Leilani Marie Labong Leilani Marie Labong is a San Francisco-based journalist who focuses on food, design, and travel. Quaint little bottle shop that’s family-owned and operated. Their claim to fame is their made-to-order deli sandwiches. Their bread (baked in-house) is potentially the best I’ve ever had on a deli sandwich. Gurney’s is so popular in the area that during peak summer months, you should plan on getting there around 11am if you don’t want to wait in a 30+ minute line that goes out the door. NO TOMATOES, so don’t ask! Trust me, you won’t miss ‘em.

I have enjoyed gurneys my whole life growing up in harbor springs. Although my recent interaction with the owner has left me unsettled. As someone who enjoys freedom of expression beware of negative comments in regards to certain pieces of clothing you take into the store.

When you see a line of people out the door, it's probably pretty good! Gurney's is pretty good and then some! Sandwiches were made to order with generous portions of fresh ingredients on thick bread. Delicious!

A popular sandwich stop for good reason! Bread tastes fresh and food tastes great. The Train Wreck seems to be a crowd favorite. For those who like a little "zing", ask for spicy pepper cheese, banana peppers and dijon mustard.

I love this place. Every time I'm in the area I stop in for a sandwich. The bread is great. They load it with a ton of meat and cheese. It's always fast service with a smile. What more could your ask for?! Check em out

Who knew you could get such delicious take away sandwiches from a liquor store? Meat to bread ratio is very generous. Cash only. My go-to for days on the boat!

Pick up a sandwich and have a picnic. Do not let a long line intimidate you as it moves along pretty fast... WORTH IT!

Gurney has the BEST sandwiches around. Definitely worth the price, the drive and, an occasional short wait, if necessary. They are family owned and ran., which makes it even more special. The bread is always made fresh daily. A day with a Gurneys sandwich is a tasty day. 😋
