Gus & Co. Seafood Market

I've been going to Gus for years now and have always found his seafood the freshest and highest quality. You will not find better fluke and flounder. The trout and halibut are also superb and he does some great homemade chowders. Rock on!

Amazing owner with amazing food. He has a much bigger selection than pictured, but it’s limited only due to going on vacation within the hour. Will definitely be coming back :)

Great spot. Gentleman (assuming owner) behind counter was very nice and helpful. I wanted to make a crudo and Sashimi dish - directed me to good selections. The scallops were insanely good. Salmon was very fresh - I was just popping raw pieces in my mouth as I was cutting for the dish. It really wasn't that expensive IMO for the quality $19 bucks for 3 large scallops and 1/2 lb salmon. To eat raw? That's a steal to me. Obviously market prices change this so please do not use this as pricing guides.

I’ve been here a few times and the quality of the fish never disappoints! The owner is also a very nice and genuine person. Will most definitely be back!

I came on the 4th of July and ordered wild caught shrimp with 2 salmon fillets. The jumbo shrimp was huge.. super fresh.. the best shrimp I ever had and was worth the $$$! WILL BE BACK SOON..

Best fresh fish on earth!!! Last week I made a delicious grouper dish thanks to his recommendation. Coming from Spain and being picky about my fish have to say Gus brings highest quality to his shop. He also tells you what’s best each day and he is always spot on. He is not only knowledgeable but kind and funny. Love this fish market!!!

Gus consistently has the best fresh fish and seafood around. He is very knowledgeable and customer centric and at a great value. I can buy 4 or 5 servings for far less than going to a restaurant for a single meal that isn’t nearly as good.

Came in today to grab some tuna. Stumbled upon this place on Yelp after looking for a good/fresh seafood place. I didn't just want to buy from anywhere. The place was nice and filled with great seafood options. It is tiny, so options are limited. The worker was super friendly and even placed my tuna on ice for me to take home. Made spicy tuna later that evening for myself and friends and it was a huge hit. Definitely will be coming back for more in the near future!

This place is unbelievable! The seafood is so fresh, the prices are very fair and better then most other places I have shopped! The owner is accommodating, and goes out of his way to make his customers happy. I bought, shrimp, live lobsters, lobster tails... Incredibly fresh seafood at great prices! I'll be buying all my seafood from Gus! Take the trip!

Been coming here for a year now and while I left a review after my first visit, which was also 5 stars, I felt the need to write another review after being locked out of my old yelp account. Changed emails and forgot passwords, yada yada, you known how that goes. Anyway... Every single time, and I mean like dozens of times now, Gus and Co. just had the absolute best and freshest stuff. It's just knock your socks off stuff. I just grilled up his shrimp, Arctic char, and some of just scallops and the entire family gobbled it up. The shrimp were so fresh they were crunchy!?!!#% The scallops melted like butter. From fresh oysters, to Arctic char, to salmon, even the mussels and clams are just better than anything you will find at the supermarkets around here. It's worth the wait if there is a line, which gladly there normally is.

Pretty cool little fish market in an area with not many choices. The owner was very nice and informative. Prices are reasonable. Very clean!

We just moved to the area and are so excited to have Gus and Co nearby. Paul has the best seafood and such great prices. Compared to other nearby fish markets, I find his seafood to be the freshest, best tasting and priced the most reasonably! His scallops, clams, calamari, shrimp, and cod have all been amazing. I go there every week now to get my fish and I'm always so happy with what I bring home. I'm slowly working my way through everything he has to offer! There's usually a line out the door (especially these days) but I will happily wait for his delicious, fresh fish!

This is a pretty small shop, but I was impressed about how helpful the workers are. The guy who helped me was quick, answered my question, let me have a soup sample, and was very cheerful. The other man was answering another customers questions about which food are best to grill, asked me if I was being helped, and seemed just as helpful and quick. I'm not sure which is Gus, but the both acted very professional and dedicated. The fish is quite expensive though. I know it's probsbly good quality, but it's a little intimidating to someone who doesn't cook much fish. I don't want to screw up $30 worth of fish. If you are more knowledgable about fish quality and preparation, this is where you should come. The Norweigan soup sample was good but I wanted the lobster roll more so only got that. They also had Manhattan clam chowder, but I only have love for The New England variety. If they ever have that, I am so coming back. The lobster roll at $16 was a delicious, very filled, sandwich, but one I am only getting as a seldom purchase. Every bite was filled with lobster and I think there was a little sauce, but the lobster quality shown through. If you want good fish and are okay to pay a little more, then check his place out.

Have been hearing rave reviews about this seafood shop. Just decided to walk in this afternoon. All the fish in the display appeared extremely fresh! A gentleman came to the counter and mentioned that they just made some roasted Big Cove Oysters. He told me these oysters are from California. He asked me if I would like to sample a few. Of course, who could turn down yummy oysters! This is what I call, "Great customer service!" Have to say, these oysters were absolutely delicious!!! -All I need is a glass of champagne now!LOL... Moved to Montclair 3 weeks ago today, albeit to the 07042 zip code. Elated that I ventured just under 2 miles to the 07043 neighborhood. There I discovered among other gems that I plan on reviewing at a later date, Gus & Co. Seafood. Gus himself is a treasure, and his fish is as pristine as he is kind and generous. I have already had the pleasure of slurping two of his soups, a lovely Manhattan Clam Chowder, and a perfectly luscious and well-seasoned corn chowder replete with tender seafood. The cooked shrimp were done perfectly, not tough and overcooked like so many I've had the misfortune of chewing on in the past. I will be visiting Gus today for some fresher than fresh tuna, and plan on many more visits to 07043 in the near future. You Go Gus!

My husband and I have been coming to Gus ever since it opened and we've yet to be disappointed. This shop is everything you're wanting a fishmonger to be: fresh, high quality, solid variety, and knowledgeable. He even taught my husband how to safely shuck an oyster, which, admittedly has kept us coming back for oysters fairly regularly. Really one of my favorite spots in town!

I stopped in today for the first time since I was finally free during their store hours. Gus is a lovely person and since he was cleaning up for the holidays, offered me what I purchased at half and I think a third of the price for one item. Beautiful clams and impressed that he sells squid and the tentacles - my favorite part for frying. I'm also impressed that he donates to Toni's Kitchen. Definitely support this wonderful man.

We love, love, love this new UPTOWN store that is everything you want in a fish store. For months we watched in anticipation as they remodeled -- and it was well worth the wait. One step inside and you are carried away to the ocean, lake or stream of your choice. We have tried everything from the scallops to the salmon to the red snapper to the fish we had never tried before -- all of which have been everything you want in seafood --- fresh, fresh, fresh. Every trip has turned into an adventure -- the owners and staff are extremely nice and helpful. Many times you get to see the fish whole -- and they prepare it for you how you would like. And the prepared foods are amazing -- not a lobster fan -- but have treated a few people to their now famous lobster rolls -- and they are crazy for them. For me it is the delicious crab cakes! And you also have to love that they prepare daily (cooked) specials and soups which you can pick up. Most importantly, no one walks away unhappy or even a little dissatisfied. These folks care that their customers are happy -- it is so great when you see people loving their work. Can you tell I'm both a fan and a regular!

Today was my first trip to Gus & Co Seafood. I am very particular about the freshness of the fish I purchase. Coming from Patchogue, Long Island, New York I have spent over 65 years harvesting my own crabs, lobsters, clams and Blue Point Oysters. I have also caught my share of Flounder, Fluke, snappers etc. You cannot get a better than that. I have now found my new Nirvana. I always attempt to support local small business owners. This is a winner. It is a small shop with an abundance of fresh shellfish & fish. No fishy smells. The products was handled with meticulous care. I ordered soft shell crabs, lobster and clams. The pricing is fair. I look forward to a long time relationship with this establishment.

The lobster rolls have become my new addiction. Always fresh, delicious, with great service too. I've also recommend Gus and Co to my friends and all of them rave about the food

This place is great for any and all seafood. I have had scallops, clams, clam chowder, mussels, branzino, salmon, tilapia, cod and oysters which were all tasty and not just because of how I cooked ;). However, I was most impressed with some tuna I got there recently. I called on a Friday, but they were not getting any tuna steaks in until Saturday so I reserved some. I came in the next day and I was invited into the back to pick out the exact size and amount of tuna that I wanted. I grilled them that night and they were scrumptious. In conclusion, the seafood (only thing sold btw) is great and the service is wonderful. Come here for any/all seafood desires.

My husband has been raving about Gus & Co for the last couple months, because they have an awesome selection of whole fresh fish that just so happen to be perfect for roasting -- especially their whole branzino. He loves the idea of supporting smaller shops like this, and I think all of the seafood in our house has come from here since we moved into the area. He's had only good things to say about their friendly customer service, their great selection, and especially their delicious homemade soups. So one evening he was craving their clam chowder, and I stopped in with him for a visit. It's a charming little shop, and the display cabinet was filled with whole fish, fillets, and SCALLOPS! I have been dying to learn how to cook scallops, and I've heard that freshness is key. I was so excited to see them there! I know their stock rotates based on what's available that day & in season, but just the fact that they can get them means I'll be stopping in more often. It's a little pricier than your supermarket seafood section, but you're definitely seeing where the extra money goes, as far as quality and selection. I'd love to try their oysters too (I'm a recent convert!), once the weather gets a littler warmer. And the soup my husband got smelled so good, I almost tried it! Lol. So, even though I only recently stepped foot in the store, turns out I've been a big fan of Gus & Co for a few months! They're definitely our go-to seafood shop.

Just moved into the area and was desperately seeking a good place for fresh fish. Well boy did I find it. Everything is super fresh! I've tried the whiting and scallops so far and both were delicious. So excited. Check it out folks!

I left a star off from my original review because the lobster roll was unavailable the times I'd been here. Since then I've had many of their lobster rolls and they are amazing. Pretty simple with only lobster meat, lemon juice and a lightly toasted potato roll. I love them. I like lobster rolls with celery so I add celery salt to mine. A Gus' lobster roll was a nice treat on some of the warm days in December. I hope my pictures do them justice; they are one of my favorite things to eat.

This is a really nice little seafood shop in Upper Montclair. I went there specifically to pick up some sushi-grade tuna and it was outstanding. Super fresh and fairly priced. They had a modest but well-curated selection of beautiful looking fish, shellfish, lobsters and a bunch of prepared dishes. The gentleman who waited on me was very friendly and welcoming and I wouldn't hesitate to return for any seafood items that I might need/want in the future!

This place is sent from God to save us! It's a small shop. It's a busy shop. And let's hope it stays that way because it is amazing! I went because facebook said they had killer lobster rolls. And seeing as I'm fancy and only get lobster rolls on cape cod, at the hamptons or in Maine, of course I'm gonna bring my judgmental self there. With my stroller of sleeping baby, and shopping bags, and clients on txt waiting for miracles. Upon entry all troubles evaporated. The cue was not so bad, everyone was just happy to be there. Everything was fresh, they still had lobster available, the staff was super friendly and efficient. I will go there again and again and again. Be sure to check the hours before you go. It's a seafood shop; they can't be open all day. Otherwise you can't trust the fish. Anyway go there, and be bougie about your huîtres and moules minières.

Drove many miles to purchase seafood and it was closed when the website indicated it supposed to be open... Never again.

We've been going to Gus & Co. since it opened. The guys (Gus and Wyatt) are great, friendly and super helpful. The seafood is top notch and this is a great addition to Montclair. Always a good selection of oysters, fresh fish, shrimp and all sorts of unique items (like blowfish lollipops). We've also tried their crabcake, awesome, and their chowders. Try the chowders. They are not super heavy like what you may be used to. They feel light and bright and have great flavor. All around good seafood shop!

I bought crab cakes for Labor day and literally never had such a crab filled crab cake before. I almost ate all four myself!

We purchased oysters for a Super Bowl party. The oysters were the Fisher Island (bluepoint) and were the best oysters I have ever had. The shells were clean and the oysters were plump, sweet and juicy. This is a small seafood shop but their product is fresh. I will never shop any place else for fresh seafood

On two occasions I requested that oysters be removed from their shells. Both persons to whom I talked were too lazy or too incompetent to take the time or effort to do this. Anyone working at Kings SuperMarket or Whole Foods would not hesitate to provide a nice platter for oysters after removing them from their shells.

We so needed a great fresh seafood shop! This is a great fresh seafood shop, with very kind and knowledgable owners/help. They put together an oyster tasting for a party we were having, the oysters were great, and I took their advice and BBQ'd some which was a really nice change. Although we saved 1/2 to enjoy fresh! On another occasion I got their soft shell crabs and home made lump crab cakes. Soft shells nice and fresh the crab cakes were The Best! And the Soft Shells were so fresh they were still alive, the owner took me into the workspace to show me how he trims it and the crabbies quickly met their end :).

This place is just what Montclair was missing. Amazingly fresh seafood to prepare at home as well as super great prepared meals (their crab cakes make entertaining super easy). I think the best thing is the advice they give on how to prepare the food. I've learned so much! The service is excellent. My husband is obsessed with their soft shell crab and gravlax.

I'm so happy to have discovered this place a few months ago. The scallops are sooooooo good. :) They are fresh, huge and delicious. And the crab cakes that they make are wonderful. I've also had their mussels and flounder. The quality can't be beat. And the owner is always friendly. The price isn't cheap but you get what you pay for..you won't be disappointed.

These guys have a passion for seafood. You can hear it in their voice and see it in their eyes when they discuss the delectable seafoods presented in the case in the store. If they don't have it they will do their best to accommodate you. Crabs and oysters on ice ready to indulge. They offer lobster rolls and seafood specials. I will keep going there as long as they are there. It was exactly what this area needed!

If you are looking for Fresh Wild Caught Seafood this is the place! I am very picky about my seafood and Gus has the best! Friday nights he makes full meals. Tonight I had salmon with fresh vegetables with rice pilaf. C'est Manifique. These guys work super hard.

FANTASTIC! Montclair FINALLY has a fishmonger, and not just any; these guys purvey REALLY fresh fish. Whole Foods or any other local option just doesn't even compare in terms of freshness and quality. The staff are awesome, particularly helpful, knowledgeable, and the prices are fair. I cannot recommend Gus & Co. enough.

Love Gus & Co Seafood! My husband and I have been coming here every Friday for like 2 years to buy the very fresh and quality seafood they sell. The salmon is outstanding, the shrimp delicious and I've even tried soft shell crabs which are very fresh and they were kind enough to show me how to prepare. If you are looking for a high end fish store that sells quality seafood, you found it! It is a little pricey but well worth it.

First time there with the Mrs. for one of the signature lobster rolls. Good portion sizes and fresh bread. Could have used a little "zing," but can't complain. The fish selection is pretty extensive for a small shop, and it seems fresh. Prices are in line with what you'd expect for Montclair. We'll be back for the crab cakes and swordfish steaks.

Really great spot with very fresh seafood. The attention to the design of the space is certainly something to acknowledge. It fits perfectly with the other storefronts in Upper Montclair. The selection of seafood was wonderful and costumer service was tops. The owner, Gus, was another gentleman who was full of useful tips and information about our purchase. We did try the lobster rolls and they were quite good. I wish that they had a bench in front of the store to sit down and enjoy them ;)

Best crab cakes I have ever had! The fish is alway fresh, the staff is always friendly, and the food is always as good as promised. I am not really a fish person but this place completely changed that. Even if you don't like fish, I recommend Gus & Co! It's amazing!

Gus & Co. is a wonderful addition to Montclair - an amazing selection of the freshest imaginable seafood offered by totally delightful folks. They are so friendly and helpful. They also have the best lobster rolls short of driving to Maine. I can't imagine shopping for seafood anywhere else. Also, you can just pop in for some window shopping. Need to buy a new cookbook!!
