A Local’s Guide to Germany

"Gut Klostermühle is a wonderful Ayurvedic spa and stately manor hotel located directly on Madlitzer See's shoreline, a one-and-a-half hour drive from Berlin. With its saunas, outdoor pool and massages, this is a fabulous place for pampering."

"An idyllic location by the Madlitzer See – this is a countryside oasis, perfect for those looking for peace and quiet. You can expect tastefully decorated rooms and a wide variety of spa facilities in BRUNE BALANCE med & SPA. The Klosterscheune provides a nice alternative to the restaurant." - Tablet Hotels

Beautiful location, nice spa. We were surprised by the service : when we asked about the time our room would be cleaned, we were informed that the cleaning staff came only every other/second day. Considering the price of the rooms, this did not feel right. We had a gallery room, which we would not recommend in future because the bedroom area was under the roof and hot in the summer night (no air-conditioning) and the steep stairs are tricky at night if you need to use the bathroom ( located on the lower level). The restaurant was not open at lunchtime, which is not ideal for guests who come by train and have no car to get food elsewhere. (This information was not provided on the website when we booked.)

we came here for a peaceful getaway from the hustle bustle of city life, which we got… However, this came with a few unexpected adaptations. The man at the reception was very stubborn and slow, eg. could not tell us the estimated walking duration for getting to places around the resort. We arrived in the dark and were offered neither help with our luggage, nor exact directions. This led to us having to ask for help from a nearby farmer , who led us through the pitch-black forest to our cottage with a flashlight. The cottage was pleasantly arranged. Dinner was decent but too expensive for what we got, the spa was enjoyable, but there was only instant coffee available for 5€ which is slightly questionable.

Pretty disappointed. We booked a 3-day stay to get some spa treatments and a little timeout from the busy city life. The timeout part worked, the spa part not. It is not possible to get any kind of cosmetic spa treatments here during the week! Which would have been nice to read somewhere (f.ex on their homepage) in advance. We had one massage, but that was it then. Luckily we had very good weather so we could hang out at the pool and go for walks. The breakfast is nice but exactly the same every morning and all over the hotel they only serve machine made or filter/ instant coffees. The included 3-course dinners are okey. Wine selected is small and very basic. Room is nice with a lake view but very warm in the summer (although we had a ventilator which helped).

Cosy rooms, clean, beautiful lake, fresh await, spacious spa and sauna and fair prices. Good in a restaurant rather bland and cooked very subpar, but service is friendly and wine is good. Spa seems to also accept guests from outside which creates sometimes crowds of hurried and unfriendly people. Overall for the price still very relaxing, in summer going to be even better

The location is great, very peaceful escape from Berlin. Our room was a bit of a let down, there wasn't even a shower. The food in general is pretty good: breakfast is great, but the restaurant is not amazing. I had some overcooked chicken.

Great atmosphere, quiet and relaxing.Views and lake were very nice. Food at the restaurant was surprisingly very good! Breakfast was alright. Rooms are large and comfortable. This place is missing signs as it is not easy to navigate it to get to the different houses. Also booking is not straight forward it seems. But overall it was quite good.

My wife and I visiting this place the second time. It’s amazing place in the middle of nowhere, you can walk around the lake, swimming in the warm pool, having delicious food either time of day. Also, you can request the transfer to Briesen train station, so it’s also possible to visit without a car. The service is on the top level, and all rooms have a wood cabin design of interiors.

Having stayed here a few times (though don't expect this fact to be acknowledged when you arrive) we knew what to expect - a beautiful setting in the middle of the woods outside a strange, desolate village in East Germany. We had come to accept that the staff have very little service attitude because the calm location and lovely spa more than made up for it. However, this trip tipped the balance into simply unacceptable for a 5 star at the prices they charged.||||We arrived and they showed us to our room - a tiny, dark shoebox that overlooked the carpark. We complained and they proceeded to show us another 3 rooms - all more weird (and more expensive than the last) - damp, dark and unwelcoming.||I have to say at this point the only saving grace of the hotel was the receptionist (who I think had been promoted since our last visit?) - Herr Bakskar? - a lovely man who graciously showed room after room. At this point you may think we were being spoilt - I assure you - as a British I would never normally do this - the rooms genuinely were not acceptable!||||Having settled on a room, we booked a table for dinner in what we assumed would be the normal, more formal restaurant - an absolutly amazing place with incredible food - and headed to the informal restaurant for lunch. On the way back we discovered the main restaurant was closed for 2 months (no one had thought to mention this!) and so we were having dinner at the same place, with the identical menu again...||||And so the disappointments continued - we had booked the weekend to relax but the spa was fully booked for the entire weekend. We had come to catch up on some work but there was no wifi in the room (and as its in the middle of nowhere there is no phone reception). Breakfast was completely packed and you had to work hard to be able get any staff to even notice you.||||All in all - this place would be fantastic if you weren't paying 5 star prices for what is far far away from a 5 star experience. They need to up their game substantially if they are to survive. And they should - they have a pearl but someone needs to take charge and to turn this place into what it deserves to be!
