My friend and I were in Burgenland for a day earlier this month when we were driving around Austria on vacation, and we were thrilled to be able to make a stop at Gut Oggau. It was perhaps the highlight of our whole trip.
What is Gut Oggau? It's a family-owned winery open since 2007 that specializes in interesting, biodynamic, natural wines. (FYI: "Natural wine" can mean different things to different people, but generally speaking it refers to wine made with minimal intervention, using organic or biodynamic grapes, and avoiding many conventional additives and processes.)
I have had the pleasure of trying several of their wines in the United States. When I knew we would be in Burgenland, I emailed Gut Oggau to ask if we could come by for a tasting.
What we experienced at Gut Oggau was so much than a tasting. It was an incredibly personal and thoughtful experience. It was my friend, me, and another couple from Italy. Stephanie (one half of the team behind Gut Oggau) walked us around the property for over an hour, explaining the winery's philosophy to wine production, telling us the history of the winery, and showing us the equipment and resources they use to make their wines (including the horses they keep to help on the winery).
After our tour, we sat down around a table in their lovely courtyard for a tasting. We tasted six of their wines with Stephanie providing explanations about each, while their dog Oskar put his little head in my lap, like we were in someone's home.
Our visit was very personal and incredibly special. Stephanie was a wonderful host and guide around the winery. Oskar was a dear that made me smile and feel at home. The wines are incredible - vibrant and unique. The property is beautiful.
Our time at Gut Oggau was a highlight of our entire trip. I can't recommend it enough.
