Talking about a remote spot for a brewery, this one takes the cake! The driving adventure makes the beer and taste all the more better. This is our second trip here. Ya gotta go here at least one in a lifetime.

Katherine Dice

Google
Fantastic food, we haven't had any dish here that we did not love. Delicious beers. Dog friendly, outdoor seating with great views of sunset. Fire pit.

Google
This was the craziest drive I ever took to try a beer! However, if you are up for an adventure, Gyppo Ale Mill is worth it. The beer was excellent, and the food was great. I had the double bacon cheeseburger, and my wife had the fish sandwich. Both were worth the drive.

I dropped in to Gyppo on a serene Southern Humboldt afternoon. It was my first visit to Whitethorn. It was a Wednesday evening and it was a medium sized crowd with Milo the Dog in fine form greeting customers. I enjoyed the truffle fries (not the right name) and the rockfish tacos. I met Dave, who was running Bingo and making witty commentary. We had a great time chatting by the fire with the chef afterwards. The brewery is in a unique building, with art along the walls of the parking lot. I drank the Whistle Punk (West Coast IPA) and Fathom the Bowl (English Oatmeal Stout), both 7%, leaving me satisfied with my lot. The two servers, Mel and Mike (?) were outstanding. I look forward to returning to this quaint coastal gem in a sublime county.

Google
This place has a great atmosphere and a great view. They are dog friendly in the outdoor seating area. The fish was nice and fresh, my husband liked his burger. The fries are just fries and I sampled some beers and they just weren't my taste. It's just a long road to drive if you don't live in the area. They had a band playing so that was cool.

Google
Great place to get delicious fish & chips and wash it down with their delicious drink offerings (even really tasty non alcoholic ones). Dogs are welcome and Clam chowder is also on the spot. This places is worth driving to for a bite and a drink (you can get there the hard way or easier way 😉)

Google
Absolutely the dirtiest place I ever went to. The tables outside have never been cleaned and you can write your name in the filth. Wash your hands. Service slow but the minimum tip on machine is 20%. I guess you can get away with this if there is no other option. I'm bringing food next trip. Food was ok , but super expensive. 7 bucks for a small side of fries? Side of ranch 7$?. I know it costs a bit more to deliver there but come on. It seems like the only interest is $$$. Not customer safety .

Google
It is in a great spot, it looks nice in there. They have you order on a QR code, which is nice in some ways and can be confusing in others. Get there early, it can get busy. Food is good, but it is expensive and everything is "a la carte" which is always a terrible option in my opinion. Their kitchen is small and the service was SLOW. The only reason it gets four stars instead of three is because the food is good and the place is nice.

Yelp
I got the Beer Flight: Dave's Pilsner: A crisp, grass-flavored pilsner with a 5.7% ABV and 24 IBU; Daydream Believer: A balanced pale ale with fresh, flavorful notes, boasting a 6.1% ABV and 31 IBU; Bob's Your Uncle: An English mild ale that's smooth and malty, with a 5.6% ABV and 26 IBU; Whistle Punk: A West Coast IPA featuring floral and citrus flavors, coming in at 7.0% ABV and 40 IBU. For soup, I ordered a cup of New England Clam Chowder, which is a house-made clam chowder that contain plenty of chopped clams. It was creamy, hearty, and delicious. For entree, I ordered their daily special (unfortunately they were out of fish that day, otherwise I would have really wanted to rock fish tacos) Baked Dungeness Crab with Garlic Baguette, which was actually really amazing. The entire dish was drenched with delicious garlic butter, which was heaven when paired with the baguette and crab meat. They literally serve you a whole baked Dungeness crab on a plate. Finally, I finished the course off with the salted Caramel Chocolate Mousse, which is a rich dessert that balances sweet and salty flavors providing a satisfying finish. They do have a QR code ordering system for busier times, but I went on a lighter day and the waitress was so attentive and friendly. Service was definitely top notch. Ambiance was great, they use really high end seats that are so nice to the touch and so comfy to seat on, which is another level of attention to detail that most restaurants misses (or wouldn't care about) so it was really a pleasant surprise. I would give this place 6 stars if it allows me to!

Yelp
We enjoyed two evenings at Gyppo's. The wait staff - Eric and Paige were just amazing. Kitchen staff is doing an incredible job as well. Especially considering how busy they were! We especially loved the blistered shishito peppers from the local Briceland Forest Farm - I've never seen ones that large. We grow them in our garden but a smaller variety. These were amazing. Dining options in Shelter Cove are sometimes limited. Such was the case on our recent visit but we were happy to dine here two nights in a row. Cold beers on tap - great selections. The first night we share fish tacos - locally, incredibly fresh Rockfish. They were so yummy. Just enough for the two of us. Gyppo's was packed both nights. Eric and Paige smiling through it all and being very responsive. Lots of locals. Night two, more cold beers. I had the Rainbow Kale Salad. It was not only delicious but beautiful. My husband had the Cajun Rockfish sandwich. It was good, but we think the bun and toppings overpowered the fish. But we were happy to be part of the Gyppos vibe. There were patio games including cornhole and foosball. Dog and kid friendly - there were plenty of both. Yelp
Gyppo Ale Mill, Shelter Cove - September 22, 2024 They have a nice bar together with an indoor dining room and covered outdoor patio seating. If you order outdoors, you use a QR code to order and pay. They use regular menus indoors. Cell coverage may be spotty, but they have free WIFI. Password is ilovebeer as of September 22, 2024. I had the best fried cod ever. An amazingly thick and fresh piece of breaded fish cooked to perfection - crispy on the outside and moist, tender, and delicious on the inside. The fries were pretty good, but could have been cooked just a little more for my liking. Still good. My wife had had the shrimp tacos, which were very tasty. The Whistle Punk West Coast IPA was spot on delicious - a beautiful clear golden ale that was well balanced. There is an airport at Shelter Cove and we saw one small plane take off. They have a nice game area that includes ping pong, table hockey, and corn hole. They also have a stage for live music.

Yelp
If nothing else, come for the view. Worth it alone! Ocean, trees, animals and airplanes. What more could you want.

Yelp
This place is the local brewery and is great. We were there on a Wednesday night for beer and dinner after a rainy day, but it turns out it was also Trivia Night. We are not trivia buffs and don't typically play reindeer games. However, Dave, who was running the trivia, has been doing this for years. It was a full house but he made us feel welcome, and it turns out we loved it! The beer was good and we tried the rockfish since it is line-caught locally. It was baked, topped with a green sauce with coconut rice and corn salsa. Portions were generous and delicious, but we also had to get the bucket of fries, which put everything over the top. Prices were reasonable, especially considering what restaurant suppliers have to do to get here! My hats off to all those that contribute to the island-like lifestyle in Shelter Cove. When you visit you need to experience this Cheers-like brewery.

Yelp
What a fun place! My friend and I were spending a few days in shelter cove and had a great time visiting Gyppo. Both times we went, it got busy but the servers were friendly and the food was great. Definitely try the fish tacos! I'm a big beer fan too and was not disappointed! Considering how out of the way Shelter Cove is, finding a place like Gyppo was a treat. I can't wait to go back to Shelter Cove and when I do, Gyppo Ale Mill will be on the list for sure.

Yelp
This was a good experience and everything was so delicious. It is a well established brewery in a small town. Not big and not too busy. The service was hands off but overall still great. We will definitely be coming back someday in the future!

Yelp
What a great place and a perfect location! I really enjoyed my oyster beer, the nachos, and the brussel sprouts!! The server, the woman at the counter who took our order, and the view were too notch. A nice view of the ocean, and we were even able to bring-and feed-our dog. Can't wait to come back.

Yelp
horrible experience. ended up waiting almost 2 hours for our food. we ordered using the QR code menu and only 1.5 hours later did they tell us that the beer cheese has been out of stock for hours so we had to replace 2 dishes. the waitress was also unapologetic about it and claimed she didn't know and that she couldn't track our order because we ordered using the QR code instead of directly from her, which didn't make sense to me. the truffle fries was strange being doused in greasy truffle mayo instead of truffle oil, and the clam chowder was a bit too peppery for my liking. the beef burger was chewy and had a beyond meat aftertaste. we also saw staff turn away customers who came at 7.45pm even though they closed at 9pm.

Yelp
Gyppo Ale Mill's beer I tried recently while in the Northern California Coast area recently. All in all not bad. I liked the Czech style pilsner the best out of the two beers of theirs that I tried. The other was a pale ale. The pilsner was very appealing to me for it's crisp, clean, quaffable and corn flavor. Those flavors and textures made for a pretty strong beer. The pale ale was okay. Not bad by any means but not one that really won me over. This beer had a clean, biscuit with some citrus flavors to it. Normally something I'd be all about but again the whole combinational bouquet of flavors just didn't quite impress me... not like the pilsner. There's certainly other options to explore and would be worth trying out whenever the opportunity to try their beer arises again.

Yelp
Wonderful spot in Shelter Cove Ca billing itself as "most remote brewery in US", and I think they may be right. A 25 mile drive from 101 that might take you 1-2 hours and if snowing, forget it. But once you get down to Shelter Cove, Gyppo Mill a delight. They open at 4 and have a great outdoor patio with peek-a-boo views to ocean. Fantastic sunsets. Beers brewed on-site are really good. I opted for a sampler and then based on my preference, closed out with a nice porter. I got there right when they opened, so service was great. A few others joined me on patio before I left. Really good fish and chips dinner and menu is great showcasing the beer. Some good swag inside for sale as well. I'll probably go back in summer to enjoy the outside a bit more. Highly recommend the beer and food.

Yelp
Took a quick trip down to Shelter Cove to check it out and see the lighthouse! There are only a couple of places to eat in town and this place looked promising. The location is awesome, the views are great, they have outdoor seating and cornhole. When we were there they even had a live band, the music was interesting but it was live music! When we arrived on a Thursday afternoon we were asked if we had a reservation, of course we didn't but they happened to have one seat inside and one seat outside. We sat outside and were told they just finished happy hour so it might be a minute before someone helps us. Fortunately we were helped right away but the service was somewhat lacking for the rest of the dinner. They do have shade structures outside but most of the seats are in the sun. I tried a couple of their beers and they were pretty good, that's one thing this place has going for it. The menu is very simple, a chicken sandwich, some burgers, fish tacos and fish and chips. They were out of the taco ingredients. Being a haul from anywhere and a crazy road to get out here I get it. I got the fish and chips, the kids got hot dogs and a burger and my wife got a burger with a lettuce wrap. Pro tip, get the kids burger... it's the exact same thing as the $20 burger, cooked the same way and there was honestly no difference. Even better don't get a burger at all, they were dried out, not that good and well done. The fish and chips were not bad but for $30 I suggest drinking 3 beers instead. Sauce comes in a little cup and they make it very clear extra sauce is $2. You also get some sort of popcorn when you sit down, no clue what it's coated in but it was odd. Overall the place was cool and the location was epic, everything was very overpriced and that's coming from a Tahoe local. If you're going to charge that much for something you really need to up your game and serve some good food. An over cooked frozen burger isn't going to cut it.

Yelp
This place rocks! The power had been out most of the day and they opened in the evening and made it happen! The food tasted great and was the perfect temperature. The waitress was so nice and helpful when selecting bears. And even when you are completely stuffed don't pass up the home made ice cream! We took ours to go! The have amazing outdoor seating and the outdoor seating is also dog friendly !

Yelp
Love the female owned business. Beer was decent and wine was on point. Food was ok. If you are looking for health food probably go elsewhere. But had a good time. Vibe was good and people were nice.

Terri J.

Yelp
The food wasn't half bad really, we had the fish and chips, the Mac and cheese and the wedge salad- the 2 stars is all about the ridiculous prices (on top of high prices, add $1.50 for each to go item) and the tiny portion sizes... I'm serious- the Mac and cheese came in a cardboard pint container and was NOT full- the wedge was the smallest wedge I've ever had and the fish although quite delicious was minuscule. We were really disappointed- we wanted to return but we were very put off by the first experience.

Yelp
Love this place!! Great atmosphere with an indoor bar and outdoor patio with fire pit and yard games. We split the Cajun chicken sandwich and pulled pork sandwich and washed it down with a creme brulee. An amazing place to hang out, grab good food and a cold beer and watch a killer sunset.

Devin V.

Yelp
Pretty good food and the waitress was very friendly. Also the beer is fantastic, I expected to hate the rose beer and was shockingly delighted. The only brewery in a small town one hour away from anything means you're gonna wait... Quite some time. It was roughly 20-30 minutes before getting beer then another 15 before placing food order because she forgot to get or order in. She was new so I didn't worry about it too much. But the food came out almost 60 minutes after that. It also took a while to get the check as well. So all in all we were there 3hrs-ish. I will definitely return but they need to work on there timing a little bit.

Yelp
Fabulous dinner with a great view. I had the special - fish/curry dish - sooo good. I will be back when I get to do the entire LCT.

Yelp
Great venue, excellent food, fantastic beer. What more could you ask for? However, I was disappointed that they were out of oyster tacos.
google avatar

Yelp
Local brewery with decent brew choices and good food. Also large dog friendly spot. Didn't rush you out and good staff. Had their broiled local fish, fresh and delicious.

Yelp
We were so lucky this was within walking distance of our hotel. My man flew us to Shelter Cove, so we didn't have a car or a scooter to go far. It was a great night to come here since there was live entertainment! The vibe was lively, and the outside dining was delightful. There were lights from above and a big fire pit by our table to keep us warm. Let's get on with the food, huh?!?! We started with Pulled Pork Fries, and WOW, it was huge! The french fries were tasty when eaten together with the sweet pulled pork. The pulled pork was tender! I like how they added the slaw to make me feel a little healthier and better. They also topped it with fried onions, and it kicked ass! I wish there were more of it. I couldn't get enough. The Fish & Chips were not as exciting as the Pulled Pork Fries, but they were good! We forgot how there would be fries in both of our orders! Yikes! Oh well, they were yummy. The cod was perfectly cooked, the beer batter wasn't too thick, and we enjoyed eating them. We ended our meal with a cheesecake. Oh man, it was divine! The cheesecake was smooth and silky. I don't know what kind it was, but I want to come back for that cheesecake. For drinks, we had the 0Q5 Flight. According to my man, it's the code for the airport or something like that. I liked the Pink the best out of four, and I also enjoyed the Gyppo W.H. My man's fave was DOS1 - I think. We also got a root beer from checking in on Yelp. Woo hoo!!! The servers were friendly and apologetic since the wait was long. We didn't mind. We had a great time with yummy food, great live music, and the big fire pit that kept us warm. Thank you, staff, for the wonderful service!

Yelp
Unreasonably good food! As in, "how does a place this remote have food this good??" Great ceviche, great beers. It's all fantastic.
google avatar

Beverly O.

Yelp
I REALLY wanted to like this place. So much so we went three times. Every-time the service was poor. Slow ... extremely slow. The food was "meh" but expensive for what you got. Boyfriend said the beer was good. But overall wasn't impressed but had limited options in the area.

Irene P.

Yelp
Beautiful sunset view, warm Ambiance, great food, good service, friendly and kind people. We loved the crab special! Thank you!!
google avatar

Nate C.

Yelp
As touted, this place really IS the most remote brewery in California. Just getting there is a bit of an adventure, and don't let Humboldt County Cannabis Nursery distract you as you drive by. Upon arrival, you are rewarded for your efforts. There you sit, overlooking the Pacific and the Shelter Cove runway (0Q5), with live music playing. At dusk, the deer come out on the runway to graze. It's magical. Great beer, made right there. I particularly liked the Pilsner. The fish and chips are gourmet-level awesome, and the service is pretty awesome as well. Full disclosure, I could have foregone the waitress with red dreadlocks dumping a full pint of IPA all over our table, but it did not entirely ruin the evening. This is a great microbrewery with a highly acceptable kitchen. I will gladly return.

Yelp
Spent the late morning walking on the black (grayish) sand beach and enjoyed a sunny day at Shelter Cove (really). Checked out the brewery because we had worked up a mean thirst! Got there at opening at 4:00 and sat out in their very nice beer garden. The brew was very tasty, very good, but not quite up to North Coast or Russian River (the gold standard), but good none the less. My wife had the two piece fish & chips (locally sourced) and I had the deep fried cauliflower. The cauliflower was good and my wife raved about the quality of the fish. Prices where not that bad (we ate off the happy hour menu). Hey, we are out in the middle of nowhere, just happy to find such a quality brewery! Keep up the good work!

Mark M.

Yelp
Arrived at 6pm on a Monday. Place was packed. Good vibes with a number of well behaved large dogs in the beer garden (Always a plus for me) Had to clear the table ourselves and wipe it down ourselves after waiting 15 minutes for the staff to do it but no big deal. Staff were friendly even though overwhelmed with customers. Fish and chips were good. Fish tasted fresh with a light batter, chips were frozen but good. Beer selection was good. Over all liked it in a small town on the north coast of California.
google avatar

Debbie B.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic spot in a small seaside town. 12 rotating beers brewed on site, really fresh and delicious food, and a glorious setting. The folks who work here are friendly and helpful. Really loved this place. I had the fish tacos and my friend had the breakfast BLT salad. We had a Michelada and a Timber Beast ale, both great.

Amanda A.

Yelp
Very delicious food and drinks. The band was amazing. The service was great towards night got busy but was expected.

Butch T.

Yelp
View is amazing. However, its self seating and a party of two will sit at a table designated for 8. One person sits at a tale for five. We got stuck at the only table that didnt have a view. So, we watched the stoners dance to the grateful dead playing on the screen. Not my families thing, but somebody might enjoy that. Menu was impressive. Unfortunately, they were out of a lot of options. Summer looks like their busy season. Staff was friendly.
google avatar

Myke M.

Yelp
Solid local spot in shelter cove! The brews are great and the atmosphere is solid! If you happen upon this local spot- definitely spend some time here for some good food and a couple beers (I recommend the tasters!)

Brian D.

Yelp
Relaxing atmosphere in a great location. Fish, burgers, and beer are all amazing quality. The locally caught rock cod fish and chips are the best I've ever had.
google avatar

Monica H.

Yelp
Strange fast food style ordering system doesn't really lend itself to adding on drinks or dessert. Beers were very nice. Food was ok. Service was super friendly but very slow due to lack of staff. Great patio with a nice fire pit. They even have cornhole!

Aiyana B.

Yelp
The food was good, but we waited 20 minutes for our drinks and an hour and a half for two main dishes and an appetizer. When the food arrived, one of the dishes was prepared with dairy, when it was supposed to be vegan. They were severely understaffed, and orders were through a QR code, so it was also hard to get someone's attention to know what was going on.

Terri H.

Yelp
This was a superb meal. They were out of the daily specials, so our backup was a rockfish dish, basket of fries, and civiche. Every dish was perfect! We sat outside on the patio and our service was fabulous. The restaurant had music playing and it was altogether relaxing and wonderful.

Natalie F.

Yelp
I'm sorry but we waited 2 hours for food at an online order restaurant. None of the waiters worked very hard to make things go faster. Food was AWFUL - had to send back the Mac and cheese because it literally tasted like vanilla?? And there was poopy in the oyster. AND worst fish tacos EVER!!! At least they had Cornhole. But seriously awful experience. Have more people on staff.

Jacob S.

Yelp
Stayed in shelter cover for a few days while on vacation and during the 1.5 weeks we were in CA this was hands down the worst food an longest wait time of our trip. Almost everyone's food was cold when it got to the table after waiting for almost 2hrs... lucky they are the only restaurant in town
google avatar

Danielle M.

Yelp
The food was OUTSTANDING. The service was PHENOMENAL. I will definitely be a returning customer any time I find myself in Shelter Cove. Such a cute gem in such a beautiful place. 10/10 recommend :)
google avatar

Yelp
Remember, this town is a long way from nowhere, so there aren't a lot of choices. Gyppo was about the only place we found open on a Sunday evening. I had the fish tacos, which I thought were really good, and my wife had the fish and chips, which she also liked. Pretty average fish with French fries. No soft drinks available - this place is all about the beer. We're not beer drinkers so we had water. Only complaint I had about this place was that our tab was over $75 and that was a lot for two fairly regular kind of meals with no alcohol, and not fancy at all. The atmosphere was cool, and we ate outside and it was pretty sunny, but it was kind of a cool evening, so it was enjoyable. Careful, they close pretty early.
google avatar

Natalie H.

Yelp
This is pretty much your only option for eating in shelter cove so thank goodness it did not disappoint. My husband and I sat on the patio and watched the sunset into the ocean. It's a casual patio with good food. I got the fish sandwich which was tasty, the fish and chips also looked good (I was a little food jealous when I saw them come out). It was counter ordering and grab a number and sit where you want. Waitstaff comes around and gets you refills. Beer was great. I got Bob's Your Uncle and it was perfect while watching the sunset.
google avatar

Yelp
Its a Four for me. A low four but a four none the less. Here's why: Pros 1. Quality ingredients in the middle of nowhere! 2. Chic modern build out and great patio! 3. Decent beer and cider! 4. Well plated and good flavor! Smoked Brat was huge. And the tempura portobello was yummy! Cons: 1. Small portions on the highest priced items we ordered. Shrimp Louis a staple for me. Flavors were good, plating on point. Size...It was tiny. At $21.00 it should have been a meal. It was a snack. But a good one. 2. Consistancy of service. We were Never offered a pint of cider ours came in a 10oz yet customers all around were drinking pints. Would gave gladly ordered pints. For rural So-Hum this is a Gem. Hard to find good food down here. She was really turned off by the cost of my salad and the pint issue. At over $78.00 for two plates one app and 4 beers im feeling the SoHum Price Factor.. But I'd probably visit again. And... Great job navigating covid-19 well done..
google avatar

Cat M.

Yelp
I do not understand these reviews on food. The beer was good and the location and setting great... but the food was horrible. We had the salmon burger and the grass fed beef burger. Salmon burger was dry but passable. The burger was extremely well done and the fries were cold mixed with warm mixed with old. They were busy, staff was very friendly. With only one cook in the kitchen our meals were brought separately. By the time my burger came my guest had finished his salmon burger... not acceptable. Certainly not worth the price. Definitely not worth the drive. Giving it a three as the beer was tasty.

Calvin R.

Yelp
Amazing sunset spot. Amazing outdoor area. Food was solid. Such a great find. Will be back.

Yelp
Food - is good sometimes too crunchy Service - don't expect to rush your food, they often seem understaffed and too busy to be on top of time. Location and ambiance is nice country fishermen town vibe- good merchandise and beverages and food Just know you may need to be on top of the server to get service sometimes you gotta repeat yourself or be a bit of an advocate for your order
google avatar

Thia D.

Yelp
My son and I had a great time in the area, but our visit to Gyppo Ale Mill was a highlight. The food was good and the patio was very family friendly.
google avatar

Tara S.

Yelp
This place has great food, relaxing atmosphere and a fun view of the planes landing and taking off from the little Shelter Cove airport. We had lunch here on a Saturday and came back for dinner and drinks the same day! There's not much to do in Shelter Cove besides relax, have some food and look at the ocean and this is a great place to do it all. The sunset, if you stay in the evening is beautiful. Don't miss this place!
google avatar

Tiffany S.

Yelp
Very difficult to get service. Not enough staff for busy times. The fish & chips is local fish but not as good a value as the Deli at the Shelter Cove RV park. The fried cauliflower was disappointing because it was unexpectedly quite spicy. Nice indoor and outdoor seating areas. Ping pong table, foosball table, corn hole out on the grass. Beer was decent. Poor wine selection.
google avatar

Lucha O.

Yelp
If you're in this area, you must stop in! Dog friendly outside and lots of activities: corn hole, ping pong and foosball. Great views and huge fire pit. Great food and drink menu!

D Y.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere. Nachos was really good. We requested some meat to be added to it, and they suggested a burger patty, crumbled up. Turned out good. Service was there low point. They required you to go to the counter for everything including beer refills. At one point, we had to wait in line behind another customer sampling multiple beers. Not sure why they can't offer table service. Would've made the experience much more enjoyable.
