13 Unique Places to Indulge Your Inner Horse Lover

"The sight of watching Gypsy Vanner horses race through a field, their luxurious manes and tails whipping in the wind, is enough to stop anyone in their tracks. Tufts of silky hair cover the animals’ hooves, which pound the ground with a poetic blend of power and grace. Gypsy Gold Horse Farm, located in Ocala, Florida—also known as the “horse capital of the world”—lets you get up close and personal with the beautiful, friendly horses. The farm was home to the first Gypsy Vanner horses to ever enter the United States, imported in 1996. Gypsy Vanners are a relatively new breed, but their story doesn’t begin in Florida. It begins soon after World War II, with two stallions, Sonny Mays and the Coal Horse, which were ideal caravan horses. Vanner, in fact, means “a horse suitable to pull a caravan.” The sturdy Vanner Horse is a combination of Clydesdale, Shire, and Dales Pony. There was no formal recognition of the Gypsy breed until Dennis and Cindy Thompson saw one unusual-looking horse in a distant field as they drove through the English countryside. Inquiring about the beautiful animal, they soon learned that the horse belonged to a traveller and that the man had a hidden band of mares that looked just like the stallion.  After Dennis and Cindy Thompson discovered the beautiful stallion, they became enamored with the horse’s look and began a journey to understand how it developed and where it came from as they traced the original horse’s genetic heritage through three countries.   On November 24, 1996, the Thompsons imported Bat and Dolly, the first two Vanners to step hooves on American soil, and established the first registry for the breed, the Gypsy Vanner Horse Society. There are now recognized societies in New Zealand, Argentina, Columbia, Canada, and over 5,000 Vanners registered in the United States. Similar societies exist in Europe, the United Kingdom, and Ireland, though the breed is referred to as an Irish Cob. The Vanner is a small draft horse with a more refined head than most drafts, but with the same gentle personality of the horses often referred to as “gentle giants.” Feather (hair) that starts at the knee and hock and covers the front of the hooves like a pair of fluffy bell-bottom pants is a signature feature of the breed’s look. A tour of Gypsy Gold Horse Farm lets you meet the farm’s exquisite equines and learn about the history of the fascinating breed. You will view stallions, mares, and foals, and even have the chance to feed treats to some of the gentle creatures." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

You cannot beat the price for this tour. It's easily walkable even with people who have a cane. My girlfriend had a full knee replacement 5 months ago and she was able to move around very easily on the grass. Learning about the history and the story of the horses were great. Definitely bring carrots and make sure that they are already cut up and bring apples in. Make sure they are in slices but a whole bag of apples and one bag of carrots that are organic would be perfect. I can't think them enough for giving us the tour. And look forward to coming back with more Family.

The history behind it all is sooo very intriguing, you can truly tell Dennis is a very wonderful man that has such passion for what he does. I would recommend this to all! Bring along some carrots and apples and the horses will love ya! The donkeys and birds are an added bonus as well. Again, love your work yall, keep it up ❤️

Google
Highly recommend going. Wonderful experience for my husband and I. Due to ill health I waited 6 years to go. Fabulous owners and horses!......Donkeys and Parrots. A must do!!!!! Great for Adults and children. Can't wait to go back. And you can also volunteer there.

Google
Karen and Shannon took great care of us on our tour today. We had VIP tickets that included meeting a Clydesdale foal. Our tour included all kinds of great information about what the Cobbs do with their horses, how they breed the horses, how they pick individuals for jobs, and how they spearheaded competitions for their horses in Florida. The horses we met were sweet and curious. It was a treat to meet your gentle giants and learn about the job that these amazing horses do. Thank you for sharing your horses with us!

If you’re visiting Ocala and want to see some truly beautiful, well-cared-for horses, Gypsy Gold Horse Farm is the place to go! The owner and his sister-in-law were so welcoming and kind. Beautiful people, beautiful horses, and beautiful views — an unforgettable experience.

Ana T.

Google
Visiting Gypsy Gold was truly an unforgettable experience. From the moment we arrived, it was clear how much respect and passion the staff have for the Gypsy Vanner breed. Their knowledge is incredible, and they share it in a way that’s engaging, heartfelt, and easy to understand. The tour offered a great learning experience—rich with history, fascinating stories, and up-close encounters with some of the most beautiful and gentle horses you’ll ever meet. It’s an experience that’s genuinely great for all ages. Adults appreciate the depth of information, while kids are captivated by the horses’ calm and friendly nature. One moment that meant the world to us was when my son, who had just experienced an anxiety attack, was gently nuzzled by one of the horses. That quiet, comforting interaction showed just how intuitive and kind these animals truly are. What stood out most was how thoughtfully and respectfully the horses are treated. You can feel the pride the team takes in preserving the breed’s heritage and educating visitors. If you’re looking for a meaningful, enjoyable, and educational outing, Gypsy Gold is truly a must-visit.

Gypsy Gold is a treasure. Dennis is so passionate about his life's work. The places he has been and his travels were amazing to hear. I truly hinged on his every word. I hope this treasure of a place continues forever. It is his labor of loved and should be honored. He is a tue visionary. His sister inlaw gave us a tour and she is just as passionate about these magnificent horses. I can't wait to visit again.

Google
Absolutely worth your time. We took the 2 hour tour and it was fantastic! The owner Mr. Thompson taught us the history and back stories of the breed. His wit and charming way of presenting his farm and horses history, was electric. The farm setting is beautiful as well as the horses. Relaxing morning tour is what I recommend. They have coffee for guests and its easy walking around the farm. Just wear good walking shoes for sand and grass. 5 star tour...highly recommend and we want to go back. Thank you Mr. & Mrs.Thompson

Yelp
This is a 5star place to visit. The owner is a wonderful story teller and wow what a story to tell. I've wanted to come here for years, we finally made it today. You get so up close and personal with these beautiful stunning horses. I learned so much and was never rushed and we are leaving with full hearts for these lovely horses. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
Our recent trip to Gypsy Gold Horse Farm was the highlight of our trip to Ocala. The farm is beautifully laid out with large live oak trees everywhere. Our tour started with a introduction to the Gypsy Vanner Horses, their heritage and how they came to America. Then we got carted around the 40 acre property and visit several of the horses, donkeys, and mules that call this place home. The animals are absolutely beautiful and majestic. The staff are very knowledgeable and friendly and more than willing to answer any questions you might have about the amazing animals. And if you are in the market for a truly one of a kind animal they are a working farm that can set you up with one or more if you are interested. Our tour ended up in a small gift shop with some tasteful momentous for purchase to remember your visit. I absolutely recommend making this part of your visit to Ocala

Yelp
An important baby Vanner horse was born recently at this awesome farm. GG The Big Bucks was born to GG Sweet Angel...he is also the great grandson of 00001Cushti Bok (the first Vanner horse in Ocala that was brought over from Great Briton) GG The Big Bucks and his horse mama, GG Sweet Angel, have been sold to a private buyer in Columbia. They will be trailed to Miami and after their quarantine is complete they will be flown to Columbia. This farm owned by Dennis and Erin Thompson is a 40 acre, pristine place, where you can see the Vanner horses, donkeys, mules and the 13 macaws that reside there. Seeing this farm is a wonderful experience...bring your camera.

Judy S.

Yelp
Spent yesterday morning at Gypsy Gold - great experience! Erin welcomed us and we visited with a few of the horses and some gorgeous macaws (rescues, a whole 'nother story), then Dennis told us the story of the Gypsy Vanners. He is an exceptional story teller and has led such an interesting life. The talk was history, humor, personal anecdotes - I have difficulty sitting still for long spells but was enthralled. He has lots of plans for his horses and farm, but sure would like to read a book about his life as well - if he has any spare time for writing that! Such an interesting history and science to this horse breed. Then the second part of the tour - the horses - what some magnificent creatures. . . We were able to visit with beautiful horses from new foals to retired guys. They are the Fabios of the horse world and look like something from a fairy tale. Words don't do them justice (go for a trip and see). Also a crew of donkeys, miniature donkeys and two very handsome (even though there were girls) mules. The farm itself is such a pretty place, lots of oaks and shade, green pastures, winding paths - a great respite from nearby Ocala and I-75. This is a great adventure, exceptional value for price, easy access, great for a day trip (we came from Lakeland), would recommend it to anyone looking for something fun to do. My only "wish" would be t-shirts!

Yelp
Delightful and informative opportunity to learn about this unique breed. Be sure to set your GPS to the name of the farm, not the address.

Yelp
Brought visitors with us from CA. Dennis, the owner, was a very funny and entertaining speaker. We had a fantastic day listening to him and meeting all the horses. Highly recommend this tour. Thanks so much!

Yelp
Wonderful experience. Very informative. The owners are lovely. The horses and donkeys are very sweet and friendly.

Yelp
A fun and happy horse farm, nestled deep and the heart of OCALA, perfect to take the kids to. We made reservations and bought tickets for the morning tour, unfortunately had to cancel them due schedule conflict on our end. They were very accommodating and said to just to show up for the later afternoon tour, no call aheads or reservations needed. The late afternoon tour had a shorter briefing of the history, but just as long of a walk about. The horses were happy, very well loved, and so were the donkeys! We took our own treats and the foals were so cute!

Yelp
The Farm is very nice and the owners extremely knowledgeable and friendly. They host a tour of the Farm a few times a week. The tour consists of a presentation and talk about the unique breed of horse that is the purpose and focus of the Farm. If you have a love of horses, I would absolutely recommend this tour. The knowledge and passion of the owners for the animals is tremendous and evident in everything they say and do. To be honest, I know very little about horses and much of the presentation was over my head. Especially in regard to breeds and breeding of animals. The presentation/talk lasted over an hour and was followed by a walk around the Farm and the many horses and mules that live on the Farm. I enjoyed the tour much more than the presentation. Visitors are encouraged to bring appropriate food/treats for the animals, such as apples and carrots (which were the clear favorite) and it was fun interacting with these beautiful animals. The owners have some plans for the future expansion of the activities for the Farm that will certainly enhance the experience. Overall, I considered the fee for the tour to be expensive for the experience.

Beth E.

Yelp
What a beautiful farm, filled with beautiful horses. Dennis and his wife make you feel very welcome and are happy to share their story of how these horses came to be her. We were told there would be a 45 minute discussion while we were seated under huge trees and then a walk around the farm. The discussion lasted over an hour and was more information than I needed. I admire their tenacity and dreams, but I am not a horse person, so it was way too detailed for me. We were unfortunate enough to be in a group where a family brought an unruly child. He was disruptive, was poking sticks at the birds, climbing the fences, and petting horses we were told not to touch. It was very annoying for all the other guests, but nothing was done about it. Be sure and take along some apples and carrots as the horses loved them. They are very gentle horses and loved being petted, which was sweet. I wish them the best for their dreams of making this farm bigger and better.

Yelp
What an amazing place! This is not only spectacular because of the horses but the owner and people that work there and love them. This is also an educational experience to learn about the Travelers love of horses and how they were brought to this wonderful working breading farm. This was such a great experience, and not just because we were able to interact with the horses, but because you can feel the love for this place from the people that work there. I highly recommend this for a day trip! Don't forget to bring carrots and apples as you will be a horses new nest friend!
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing place with the most gracious owners and beautiful horses. So special! My teenage daughters and I came out with elderly grandparents and everyone enjoyed the time. Thank you Dennis!
google avatar

Patricia M.

Yelp
Far exceeded my expectations! I was captivated by the warm and welcoming atmosphere that reflects the owners' genuine love for their Gypsy Vanner horses, as well as all of the other animals on the farm. Every corner of the farm resonates with the passion and dedication of the owners, making it a unique and memorable experience. You can feel the love and care that goes into every aspect of this haven for both horses and visitors. It is a truly special place where the owners' vibrant life and and connection with the horses shine through in every detail. I also love that they are now sharing this experience with the local schools, educating the children and teaching compassion. I highly recommend a visit to Gypsy Gold Farm :)

Yelp
The owner gives an excellent and personal historical insight on horse breeding and this particular breed from the British Isles and other European countries. The 2 hour presentation and short walking tour was a lovely experience on a beautiful property. There's a gift shop for souvenirs. The cost is well worth the experience. Bring a few carrots if you'd like to give a treat to the horses.
google avatar

Skala N.

Yelp
A most wonderful experience. The 40 acres are beautiful and the Corrals filled with gypsy gold stallions, mares and foals. There are many burros and mules, as well as numerous huge colorful parrots. The owner/docent gives a detailed talk about the origination of the breed from the UK, and how he brought them to USA. A fascinating story! Then a detailed walk to see them all. Bring your own carrots for a up close personal experience. A hidden gem that should not be missed.

Janis P.

Yelp
The Farm is a real treasure to have in the area. The passion Dennis the owner, and his team have, for the breed and the mission is inspiring. Sharing the history of the breed and farm was fascinating. Dennis includes detailed information about the origins of the breed and how he brought them to the US. He is a world class storyteller with a wonderful sense of humor. Very entertaining, especially if you have a love of horses and animals in general. The 40 acres are beautiful and the corrals are filled with stallions, mares and foals. There are burros and mules, and we had the company of a baby burro following us throughout our tour. A fascinating story! You can bring your own carrots the horses enjoy the treat!

Yelp
A beautiful setting to listen and learn about the Gypsy Gold Horse, a tour around the farm from the owner made the trip worth while. Next time company comes to visit this will be on our list.

Yelp
I drove 4 hours from Miami to this wonderful place and it was completely worth it. The owner is very charismatic and gave us a lot of info about the breed, as well as historic anecdotes and plans for the upcoming future. The horses are absolutely beautiful and gentle. I'm a horse lover and I even went to Chantilly, France and various other places just to watch horses but in this farm you can touch them, nobody will rush you and that is wonderful. For horse lovers this location is a paradise.

Yelp
Highly recommend! This tour was great, learned so much about the horses, staff were friendly and informative. Horses beautiful and well cared for.

Kathy D.

Yelp
What a great time had! The horses are as sweet as they are beautiful. The owner Dennis and his staff were kind, gracious and knowledge. If you happen to be visiting Florida or live here do not miss this very very enjoyable horse farm.

Susan M.

Yelp
Such a beautiful experience. Learning the history and getting to be up close with these magnificent animals was THE BEST. Their plans for the future are inspiring. If you're in central Florida you will want to make time to visit.

Yelp
Visited this place yesterday. The owner Dennis has stayed focused on his dream to bring these beautiful horses to America. It is well worth the tour to see the horses , that act like a pet dog and are so gentle. When you go out to the corrals they actually come to you to be petted The new born fold was a miracle in the making. You must see this place !!

Yelp
Awesome tour! Amazing horses and great info from Dennis. Absolutely beautiful horses. Bring the kids, bring the family, bring everyone. This is great!!

Yelp
Wow what an amazing experience! I have never been so intrigued by any speaker ever. The first hour was an awesome lecture by the owner and honestly I could listen to him talk all day. In fact I wanted to invite him home for dinner!! Anyway, I had my two younger children with me that enjoyed the talk and was given horse pictures to color which kept them entertained. My older daughter and husband were just as amazed as I with the lecture. After, we toured the farm visiting all of the horses with such a better understanding of them and their history. We had an opportunity to ask questions and take great pictures. I didn't want to leave without buying a Gypsy Gold Horse!! I still want one!

Yelp
So I was in Florida visiting my grandparents and my mom and grandmother were super excited to come to the Gypsy Gold horse farm and take a tour. Both Mom and Grandma grew up on farms and love horses. My grandmother had stumbled upon this place somehow and had been wanting to go for a while, so what better excuse than us coming to visit. My mom was excited and had followed them on facebook before we went, especially since one of the horses was expecting, and was hoping to see a new foal. When we arrived, Erin, the person checking us in recognized my mom and was familiar with her just from interacting on facebook. That was my first sign that the people here care. When driving to this place, or looking at it on the map, don't worry if you feel like you're going to a residential place. You're still headed to the right farm and they have clear signs as you get close marking where to go. I feel like I could start by telling you lots about the Gypsy Vanner horses and why they are so interesting and how fascinating their back story is, but I won't. Just know it's quite interesting. Your tour will start with a talk by Dennis, the owner of the farm and the guy who "discovered" the breed of horse, in a barn of sorts. At first I was dreading through what is a 45 min or so talk, but it was truly fascinating. Dennis is a great story teller and his passion for sharing the knowledge of the horses and the "gypsies" who bred them is clear. Dennis will then lead you around the stables and give you a bit of information about some of the horses. He knows so much about each of the horses and their stories and it's clear he loves them deeply. You can reach across and pet them and you are welcome to bring appropriate snacks for the horses. They also have some mules, which have their own interesting stories behind them as well. The horses and mules are friendly and you won't just be staring at them from a distance. As you approach them, they will come right up to you. There were a few kids on my tour and they were delighted with the fact they could pet the animals and got to feed them. You'll also find some other animals - chickens, parrots - on the farm, but they are not much of the tour. Don't expect anything crazy like to go inside of the stables with the horses or get on them, as this tour is designed for information, learning, and appreciation of these animals. However, at the end of the tour they do bring one of their horses out and you can get up close to him and take pictures and such. They do have a small gift shop with items to purchase. The walk around the farm is fairly accessible, but know you'll be walking through a working farm, so be sure to dress appropriately - especially the shoes. In the main barn there is a bathroom (just one stall) you can use. Out of all the tours I've been on of various places around the country, this may have been one of the best. If for no other reason than the people giving the tour were truly willing to talk to you, share information, and hear suggestions on all sorts of things. They do not rush you and let you walk around after the "official" tour and revisit the animals. If you are a horse lover, want to learn more about horses, have an interest in good story telling, or just think this may be an interesting place, I definitely recommend you go here.
google avatar

Stef S.

Yelp
Wonderful place. We went today. Beautiful horses and super interesting presentation done by the owner. I usually start losing focus if I have to sit and listen to someone for that long, but he's a great storyteller. After his presentation he takes the group for a walk around the farm. He also has big plans to add more to the property and hope to visit again sometime.

Michelle Z.

Yelp
This horse farm is so charming - a real treasure. Dennis, the owner is so warm and passionate about what he does. He and his partner Erin are very knowledgeable and welcoming. The story of how Dennis found this amazing breed and how they came to America is captivating. The horses are so stunning to see. Truly unique and special. They're so calm and friendly around people, they allow you to get up close and interact with them. Even the babies! I was so happy that we found this place and they fit us in at he last minute. This is a must do experience if you're ever in the area. I would definitely go back.

Yelp
FINALLY visited Gypsy Gold Foundation Farm! We are so happy to have this amazing place in our city. We feel so blessed to have met Dennis and got to hear his story, right from the "horses mouth"! Dennis is a truly beautiful soul. God bless him for being who he is and for finding these magnificent, magical horses. The world is a sweeter place with Dennis and his passion for the Gypsy Vanner. The horses and the farm tour are amazing, no doubt...that's why people go, right? But for us, the most wonderful unexpected thing was hearing about his vision for the future of the farm! His goal for world satellite visits for children of different cultures, is just the most beautiful awesome idea EVER! Dennis, thank you for a truly wonderful time. We'll be back!

Yelp
The horses & the grounds are beautiful. We were lucky as there was a foal that was four days old. The horses are gentle & we were allowed to pet them. You are allowed to bring carrots, but you're asked not to hand feed them. You are also allowed to take as many photos as you like. The only negative is the presentation regarding the history of the horses is a bit too long.
google avatar

Ken M.

Yelp
Great place to visit and hear the story of how a new breed of horse was introduced to America. Dennis will tell you the entire story and Erin will give you a great tour of the horses. I took a 7 year old here not knowing what to expect and she loved seeing the horses and mules. Many gentle animals to pet. Beautiful grounds for the horses. Erin walked with my 7 year old daughter and made her feel at ease around such large horse. Thanks for a great tour.

Nancy P.

Yelp
Dennis is passionate about Gypsy Vanner Horses and tells the fascinating history of how he was able to bring them to America. The farm is beautiful and the horses are so unique. It was a lovely morning getting to pet these magnificent horses. Cute gift shop!

Yelp
We had such a great time at Gypsy Gold. Dennis is very knowledgeable while incorporating his life and jokes into the history. I will definitely be back to hear him talk again and absorb more information. The horses are beautiful. Being a farm girl I loved petting the animals. I also really enjoyed Rio- very cute bird. I would recommend this to anyone interested in animals, it was a nice way to spend my morning. Not rushed, very well done. We were comfortable hanging out and talking after. It was very nice to meet Dennis & to see Erin again.

Yelp
The farm has a calm, peaceful energy and the horses are magnificent! Dennis and Erin are warm and friendly and the tour is chock-full of interesting information presented in a fun, upbeat manner. The opportunity to get up-close and personal with these stunning, sweet, intelligent horses is a real treat! I highly recommend a visit to this beautiful place, you will love it!!!

Yelp
Great informative tour! Learned so much history on the gypsu vanner horse and gypsy gold.

Pat S.

Yelp
This is truly an experience for everyone. The horses are beautiful, the owners are charming and welcoming. Before the actual tour a history of the breed is given by the owner -- his presentation is informative and has lots of laughing, chuckling moments. Very entertaining! We were 4 adults and only watched the interaction with children -- just go! Words are not adequate for this two hours.

Yelp
Gypsy Gold is a gem just north of Orlando. Dennis gives a super informative and fun presentation. He is so obviously passionate and in love with the horses and the people in England who sold him his first horses that it is impossible to not want to know more. He seemed willing to just hang out with us forever - even though we knew he was probably extremely busy and needed to get back to work! Erin was adorable and we loved having her show us the horses and let us feed some of them by hand! The horses are unlike most horses you would ever see - in fact Dennis was the breeder who first registered the breed! Go! It's well worth the cost of admission - and remember, even if it does seem pricey, the money goes towards the care and upkeep of these gorgeous animals. We would definitely go back. (PS - like Cynthia O's review - we also love Dennis's laugh!!

Yelp
This was a good tour! Dennis is very knowledgeable about horses and has great ideas for the future. I wish we were able to spend some more time with the horses than the speaking presentation but overall it was a good time! I wouldn't suggest bringing younger kids, they will get restless during the speaking presentation.

Yelp
A definite stop in the Ocala area. Fascinating story and beautiful horses. Don't miss it.
