Yelp
Oooph. I've gone back and forth over what rating to give this coffee shop, but in the end I am going with how I rate the coffee.
Like many of the cool digs in Copenhagen, Copenhagen Coffee Lab is in a basement, tucked away amongst one of the lovely side streets of the city. The decor is very minimalist and cosily woody. There are chairs and desks, sofas, armchairs, stools - a very cool variety of furniture in a fairly big space.
Sadly, a scowling, unhappy barista looked up at us, waited for about two seconds to see whether we were ready to order - um, WHO is after two seconds?! - and, seeing that we were not ready, turned away and ignored us until we decided. Even asking him questions about what they offered (as the menu was in Danish) induced a frown and a terse answer.
To end his misery, I chose the pour over coffee and hubs ordered a flat white before taking our seats. Grumpy barista set it on our table quickly (though skillfully) and walked away immediately, without a smile or acknowledgement of our presence. But a quick browse over Yelp reviews revealed that this is his natural state of being, so I guess he's at least consistent...
But here is where the four stars comes in and actually makes this shop worth a visit. The coffee is good. Really good. My pour over was nice and rounded and well brewed. Hub's flat white had a great flavour and kick from the beans. And sitting off away from the grumpy staff was very nice indeed. The music selection is great, and the shop itself a lovely place to soak in some relaxation.
If the guy were a bit friendlier, we would have purchased some beans since they seem to roast their own, but we were too intimidated and didn't want to deal with him anymore, so we walked out with a good taste in our mouths, but slightly taken aback by how horrible the service was.
So, fellow Yelper, you've been warned. I definitely recommend CCL, but go in with low expectations of the service and you'll probably be able to hang on until the delicious coffee appears in front of you. There might not be a smile with that service, but it's the coffee you came for, right?
