Habitation Saint Charles

Horrible ! Pictures are completely misleading if you are booking a simple hotel room. That beautiful picture if of the private villa, not the hotel. ! DO NOT BOOK ! This is not a 4 stars, this is 2 stars at best. We came for the last days of our honeymoon, paid a fortune for two nights, and ended up in a room so shabby and disgusting we came out within the first 15 min to request a change (denied of course). The door to the balcony was broken, so a cockroach came into my luggage, the center table was broken (we could not put anything on it), the shower was blocked and the water went everywhere in the bathroom and in the bedroom too, the furniture was old and scratched everywhere, there was no closet, the floor had small hairs and dead insects everywhere, and half the floor had yellow marks everywhere. Do they know how to use a mop ? Don't think so. Anyway, after all this unpleasantness, the next day, we were moved to another room, apparently their best. What best ? Sure it was cleaner and sunnier, and with no broken elements, but the rest is the same. and where is the decoration ? One small painting and that is it ! Even the bedroom pictures in Booking.com don't have the same furniture !! Also, some of the tiles of the bathroom were broken or loose. Staff was trying to stay polite, but we could tell we pissed them off. And don't get me started on the pond -oups supposedly swimming pool- this is for show, not for enjoyment. Breakfast ok, and bed confortable, that is all I the positive I can say.

It felt like a complete scam. I thought i booked a 4 star hotel but i would barely give I star to the room. Even though i booked months in advance they gave us the worst room (no. 5) in the hotel. There shouldn't be any really horrible rooms in a 4 star. The furniture was old broken rundown The balcony door was broken, can't close, which led to cockroaches and other insects to come in. It was full of dust and hair, they didn't even bother to vacuum. The floor is full of yellow stains. The shower was clogged, the water leaked all the way to the bedroom. The piping in the toilet was visible as the cover was not screwed on the decor was non existent and no closet for clothes. The pool is more like a shallow showoff pond for kids so unusable for adults. We only had 2 nights and for 2nd night they did move us to another room, much better but still not 4 star. The breakfast is average.

We absolutely loved our time at the Habitation Saint Charles. It was the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of the world. We stayed for 4 nights on our honeymoon, and this was a great home base for all things Basse-Terre. It's secluded, yet easy to get anywhere. The hotel is huge and so lush! The restaurant and bar have great food and drinks. The pool is so lovely with its gradual slope that lends itself to lounging. Our room was huge! Massive beds and a nice living room. We loved the shower and double vanity in the bathroom as well. And the plunge pool! It was the perfect thing to sink into after a long day exploring the island. Many thanks to everyone for making our honeymoon so special! We can't wait to come back with our friends and family!

Gorgeous! Absolutely Stunning. The pool is unique, being that it is made to look like a lagoon….bit Super clean. The rooms are so authentic and honestly….smelled the best I have ever smelt! Ver nice staff. Efficient and giving. The owner came by several times to check on us and was very charming.

Just enjoyed a 3 night stay at HSC. Had a two bedroom room. Unsure if it was a villa or regular room but it was what I booked. Bedroom had much needed cold a/c. Grounds were we maintained and lush as you’d expect for a Caribbean island. Had breakfast every morning on site which we enjoyed. Ate dinner on property two of our three nights. Everything was great and they made some small accommodations for the kids like butter pasta, fries etc. Pool was very refreshing. Chatted casually with the owner Bernard who stays engaged with guests. John at the front desk and Jochim were also great. Appreciated the fact that English is spoken some here as on the opposite side of the island it was very limited and unfortunately our French is lacking. Hotel is an ideal location to base out of and see pretty much anywhere on the island in under and hour. Bartender knows how to make a good drink.

Really beautiful hotel with a nice pool area. We booked a double room, it was simple and clean. The bathroom is beautiful. There are a lot of free parking spots and I would recommend a car, to explore the stunning gems in the area. The hotel has a small breakfast buffet which was delicious. The location is perfect to explore the island. I would recommend booking a room with a private pool.

We spent 6 nights at Habitation Saint Charles for our honeymoon. All in all it was nice - but not more than that. Having visited other hotels with similar ambitions, the hotel comes up lacking a bit in all areas. The rooms (we had a regular suite, not a villa) are nice and generally well equipped, though a bit full and with small things broken. We found the end-stop of one of the curtain rods in the closet, my clothes came back out dusty and the giant 1m wooden candlesticks didn’t have candles on them - leaving a bare nail meant to hold the candle open for injury. The view of the corner room is also currently onto a parking area and construction site. Some of the tiles of the bathroom were broken or loose and while room service came to clean every day, somehow my feet were still always sandy and there were black hairs in corners (we are both light-haired, so not ours). The rest of the building looks quite instagrammable, but in reality you will quickly notice that most of the plants are fake. As mentioned by others, upon arrival there is no tour of the site and no welcome drink, which is fine but at 200€+ per night could be expected. Also the water bottle in the room wasn’t replenished after the first day (meaning we got a new bottle once but not after that). The service staff is very friendly, but not always as attentive as they could be. If you take a seat in the garden for a drink it is hit or miss if you get noticed or if you have to go to the bar and order for yourself. This seems like something that could be fixed by an additional person on staff - some evenings one waiter was responsible for all tables inside and outside plus the garden, which could be expecting too much. At breakfast, we always ended up collecting unused cutlery and napkins from other, used tables. Of course we can ask for this from staff, but it does become a bit annoying to have to ask to be noticed and served. Again: not the end of the world! But when you are working service and two guests arrive, you should notice that not a single set table is available for them. The selection at breakfast was also mediocre. The bread and baked goods baskets were usually pretty full, however more often than not the croissants seemed like they were from a day or two before, making them stale. This could easily be avoided if they baked up less at first and replenished/made more if needed. It would have the same effect if not too much food waste without losing quality. Also, since we usually had breakfast at 9 and it closed at 10, a lot was no longer available. The dinner in the restaurant was good, though the specials didn’t really seem to change, so we would have been bored by the small menu had we eaten there a third time. Since “daily specials on the board” are promised in the printed menu, guests expect more selection that then isn’t provided. May I suggest just taking that off the menu and having it as a nice addition when a special is actually available? Same thing - different effect. Finally, the drinks from the bar. Aside from an ice cold red wine which we had to send back because it completely destroyed all flavors and complexity (it would have been almost too cold for some white wines and would have taken hours to come to the right temperature) the classic cocktails were good, though inconsistent. Also, the margarita came in a martini glass that seemed to challenge all staff in serving. Maybe just use a tumbler instead? Either way, I did not receive a single drink where the glass wasn’t gripped from above at the rim. Even beers in glasses with handles. This is now a lot of criticism, I am aware. We did still enjoy our time! Again, everyone was very friendly and one could chalk up everything we weren’t quite happy with to inexperience and under-staffing. HSC has the potential to be something great! It just seems like they aren’t quite there yet.
