Hacienda Xcanatun by Angsana, a Design Boutique Hotel Merida, Mexico

"This 18th century hacienda has been converted into a small luxury hotel with outdoor swimming pool and spa. It is just 2 minutes’ drive from Mexican Federal Highway 281. All rooms have iPod docking stations. The spa offers a variety of beauty and wellness treatments using New Age and ancient Mayan relaxation techniques. Hacienda Xcanatun, Angsana Heritage Collection’s rooms are spacious, with marble flooring and a contemporary style décor. All rooms have air conditioning and private bathrooms. There are no TVs in the rooms. At Casa de Piedra restaurant guests can sit out on the veranda and enjoy a fusion of French cuisine with Caribbean and Yucatan ingredients. There is also a bar and outdoor seating overlooking the lush gardens. Hacienda Xcanatun, Angsana Heritage Collection is a 5-minute drive from the Dzibilchaltun ruins, while the Mayan World Museum, Mérida Convention Center and Galerías Mérida Shopping Center are within a 15-minute drive. Mérida International Airport is 16 mi away. Just 15 minutes away from downtown Merida, Hacienda Xcanatun, Angsana Heritage Collection is located in an enclave where history and tradition come together. Restored to its 18th century grandeur as one of the most iconic henequen (sisal) haciendas in the Yucatan, the resort features 18 historic suites that fuze contemporary details with local touches and 36 brand new, exquisitely-designed suites, offering the effortless harmony between nature and modern spaces. The new luxurious suites are designed using a unique mixture of austere and avant-garde elements such as natural wood, leather, regional limestone and native pasta tile floor traditionally found in henequen haciendas, offering functionality, comfort and contemporary elegance that transcends. Hacienda Xcanatun, Angsana Heritage Collection is surrounded by four acres of private gardens, filled with lush vegetation and bright tropical flowers that highlight the beauty that made it one of the most important haciendas in the Yucatan. Our iconic “Casa de Piedra” restaurant, serving regional and spontaneous cuisine, is a traditional favorite among locals. A new Olympic-size swimming pool with bali beds, outdoor showers, poolside snack bar, gym and the Angsana Spa offer tranquil spaces for guests to rejuvenate and immerse in nature, bringing an entirely new concept of a luxurious “urban resort” to the historic city of Merida." - My Boutique Hotel (en)

Hacienda Xcanatun, Near Merida, The Yucatan, Mexico - Explore & Book

"Hacienda Xcanatun (ssh-kana-toon) - the name is Mayan for 'Tall Stone House' - offers luxury, attention to detail and gracious hospitality. It was two ex-advertising executives, Jorge and Cristina Ruz, who first put their heart and soul into creating an authentic hacienda experience. With the help of the best local craftsmen, it took a gruelling 5 years to restore this abandoned 18th-century sisal hacienda well beyond its original grandeur. The result is a beautiful hotel where traditional elegance is married with contemporary style and comfort. The former machine room is now home to an award-winning gourmet restaurant; the old chapel has become a salon for functions. Outside, acres of vibrant tropical gardens lead to manicured lawns and 2 freshwater swimming pools. Further glories lie in store: in 2021 the hacienda was acquired by the Singaporean Banyan Tree Group, who in 2022 remodelled the public areas, started construction of 36 new suites, a new spa and an Olympic-sized pool, and relaunched it under their Angsana brand. Located a few miles north of Mérida, the hacienda is a great starting point for exploring Mexico's ancient Mayan sites. It's also a welcome retreat: the spa offers relaxing holistic treatments using indigenous herbs, flowers and honey; the only sounds are from birds and fountains. Highs The hacienda is luxurious yet full of character, history and charm It's tranquil, romantic and thoroughly pampering The personal and caring service is impeccable There are 2 swimming pools and wonderful spa treatments It's a handy base for exploring ancient Mayan cities Lows Construction was still ongoing during our last check (2024) - we suggest you ask the latest status before booking We haven't seen the 36 new suites for ourselves yet You're in the tropics, so watch out for mosquitoes and bring plenty of repellent The hacienda is a 20-minute drive from Mérida's historic district so a hire car is handy (though not essential, as transfers can be arranged)" - Stuart and Britt Pearce

Had the best time staying here. Hotel staff was wonderful and we really enjoyed the place. We only had 2 small issues 1. the advertise 3 pools, in reality only the big new pool can be used to swim as the other two are a bit unkept and lots of debris, dead bugs etc floating around but quite nice if you want to be by the pool but not in the pool. 2. the second thing is the fact that we didn’t know construction was going on. They’re building lots of apartments in the property (90+) right by the main pool, which kinda was a bummer, really takes away from the boutique hotel experience we wanted, nevertheless the real issue is the noise! Obviously construction work is loud so when only one pool is nice and clean to swim in, and the environment is loud, well, it wasn’t ideal. The room was lovely, the staff amazing and caring. Location for us was perfect as we wanted something between beach and city so it was ideal, but you’ll either need a car or Uber a lot. Definitely loved our stay. Sad to know it won’t be a boutique hotel anymore tho.

First time staying here. Two adults and a 15mo toddler. We had a wonderful stay! The property is ~25 mins away from the Airport, Downtown Mérida, and Progresso beach - so plan to Uber, drive, or have transportation. We drove and it was easy and free parking. If you’re walking impaired make sure and state so when reserving - there are a lot of steps in certain areas. Service - 10/10 Could not be better. Everyone amazing to our family from the moment we arrived till we drove away. It was an absolute pleasure & they did everything they could to make our stay enjoyable. Even left surprise birthday cake for me ❤️ Hotel - 9.7/10 Amazing property. Felt like being in a jungle. We had a suite and it was quite large. Some construction at back of property but it was minimal. Had daily activities. Pool was great. Loved it! Restaurant- 6/10 😔 hurts me to say but we did not have best food experience at the restaurant. Staff was amazing and attentive, no issues at all with them. But food quality and taste was just not what I come to expect from Mexico. Wasn’t bad, just wasn’t necessarily great. We ate there three times and each had an element that was a bit below average (pork belly too much fat, octopus tostada not very good). The good is that the vegetables, bread, tortillas, butter and jams were some of the best we’ve ever had!! Plus they had a vegetarian menu for my wife which was very helpful Overall we’d absolutely return here and had an excellent stay. I think if they could just get the restaurant food a bit better, it’d make this place even better! Thank you to the staff for hosting us and taking such good care of us 🙏🏾🙏🏾

This is my second time staying at this hotel and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The staff are very customer focused, and provided amazing service. The new pool is really well designed and I very much appreciated there was an adults only pool that would provide a more peaceful environment. Highlight at the end was the staff was quick to check our room to see if we forgot anything when checking out, and I did manage to leave my charger. Those little things make a huge difference to your vacation.

This was an amazing time! This was a friend getaway and birthday. The massage was so relaxing and the pool was to die for! Everyone was so accommodating and welcoming. Service was sensational! We can’t wait to tell everyone that we know to come here!

I really enjoyed my stay at Hacienda Xcanatun. It is lovely and lush with greenery. The room was comfortable and large with an outdoor patio. Breakfast and dinner were all very tasty and room service was the same quality. The gym on site is great with a sizable amount of equipment and in a beautiful setting. The pool is also lovely although it is currently surrounded by local outside of the hotel unfortunately. There are a ton of rooms and there is not much like it in the area if you need a larger number of spots together for a group like we did. The downside is the area surrounding it does not have anything and it is a good 20 min ride into Merida to get to other restaurants etc. If you are looking for a place for a group or a spot for some R&R, it's great.

We chose to stay here via the Fine Hotels and Resorts program and so glad we chose this place! We relaxed so nicely. Service was exquisite. We had the resort to ourselves practically. The pool was empty all day, we saw the coatis, we enjoyed a wonderful massage, breakfast was great. We truly had a great time!

Wilbert, Tomas and Admir are the best employees in this establishment. My husband and I spent hours by the pool and their was excellent. I would highly recommend a stay in this Hacienda without hesitation. This was our first time here, but it will not be our last.

We were warmly greeted and accommodated. Our room was charming and felt like home. The property is well maintained and gorgeous! From the seashell filled tiles to the hidden air conditioned registers this structure was beautifully architected. The staff are exemplary and above standard in my opinion regarding the hospitality industry.

Yelp
This is one of the best experience I've ever had in a vacation. Not only was the place absolutely beautiful, but the service was spectacular. The head chef was fantastic. The food was phenomenal and he was such a wonderful attentive person. I would just go back just so that I can eat his food. Amazing.

Yelp
We spent 4 days at Hacienda Xcanatun for an event and the weather this time of the year is very pleasant. The direct flight to Merida from Miami (one a day is less than two hours) and we really enjoyed the place, so we will probably go back for a private stay (maybe a long weekend) "The Good" - Outstanding service - Cleanliness - Very good food - Quiet and perfect to relax - Great value for what you get. - - - prices will surely increase soon as more people start frequenting this place. "The Not So Good" (that missing star) -In order to get hot water one needs to let the water run several minutes (sometimes over 10mins) a couple traveling with us complaint that in their suite (like ours towards the more secluded part of the hacienda) there was not hot water. Not sure how or if this was resolved. - Location is between 30 to 45 mins drive to the center of town depending on traffic, so find out and avoid peak hours. -There was an absurdly large number of flies at some times during the day. When I tell you absurd I mean it. Not sure if it is during this time of the year (Oct) or it's throughout the year. Thee staff did not seem to be bothered by it. Truth is that after a couple of days swatting and flailing your arms around in a beautiful setting one gets used to it...

Yelp
Horrible Experience. Check-in took 1.5 hours because my room was not ready. They tried to give me "an upgrade" to an older room when I had booked a new one, without informing me. I booked a naj king room on booking.com. According to the photos the room has a pool view and a balcony with lush tropical plants for privacy. The photos are fake since all king rooms are on the ground floor with no view and no garden. The room and bathrobes were dirty, the toilet had a horrendous sewage smell and worst of all they had faulty electricity sensors so every 30 minutes the lights and AC cut off after a huge bang sound. This went on all night and I got no sleep (not to mention the ongoing construction noise). I reported these issues to the receptionist around 830pm who informed me there was no manager on duty (what?) and maintenance would come. No one came. Meanwhile, I tried to order a bottle of wine and was told the only option cost $100 USD! The next morning I was given the run around by the manager who eventually turned up to my room without asking and entered even though I was not dressed properly. He proceeded to check the water and inform it was hot (as I had mentioned the shower was cold). Yes, that's because it stays hot for about 5 minutes at a time and that's it. He did nothing to fix the sewer smell or anything else. He told me he would try to find me another room. 3 hours later I was still waiting. I did the long walk to reception to get an update. Eventually (another hour later) I said I wanted to go home however they would only refund me 1 of the 2 night stay which is extremely upsetting since I had reported these issues the previous night, and was told nothing could be done because no manager was there. Because my check-in took 1.5 hours I had been given a food and beverage voucher at the time of check-in (so before any other issues) and they also tried to say that would no longer apply and my 1 nights refund would have that amount deducted. I've never experienced such bad service. The least they could have done is provide a full refund (2 nights). Absolutely disgraceful.

Yelp
Absolutely beautiful property located in a little charming pubelito town. This resort is serene with lush landscaping and gorgeous colonial hacienda architecture. The newer modern buildings on the property which we stayed in were gorgeous and quite comfortable as well. The Olympic pool is refreshing with comfy cabanas and heavenly lounge chairs. Food is excellent as well as outstanding service whether it was at the bar, restaraunt, pool, or in room. We tried an array of dishes from breakfast, lunch, and dinner all of which were all delicious and fresh. The juices are also freshly squeezed and the margaritas were to die for. You don't feel like you are getting ripped off with watered down drinks here like other resorts. Shoutout to Erick who was an absolute pleasure attending to us poolside. He absolutely strives in first class customer service and it is very apparent. Everyone on the grounds were pleasant and very informative. The only downside would be that some evenings we would get no hot water only lukewarm. We had to go and wait for then to turn it back on which took some minutes but nothing crazy. The outdoor shower and large tub were a lovely addition. However, be very careful as the floors can get extremely slippery when wet as well as by the pool causing me to almost slip a few times. Property would also sometimes smell of sewage in the early morning hours and walls were a bit on the thinner side since our neighbors were very loud well into the night one day. There is also sadly no hot tub which would've been amazing. Lastly, resort was located conveniently next to little local shops and a grocery store all within walking distance. Some might say the area would be dangerous at night for tourists but we had no issues. Would definitely stay here again and is worth the price!

Yelp
Hacienda Xcanatún is quite likely the best "diamond in the rough." One would like to keep it to themselves like yours truly. Stunning and simply exquisite. Situated among local homes, markets, and mom and pop eateries, one can could pass right by the small indistinct entrance and not even know it exists. A beautiful 8+ acre tranquil property surrounded by nature. One of my extended family members took us here for lunch and am blown away. Since we didn't have any reservations, a half hour wait was needed. We were given a personalized tour of the property by one of the staff and it was amazing! Gorgeous grounds, well-manicured gardens and plenty of space to wander around to find some peace. Hacienda Xcantanùn was one of the many abandoned structures in the area which had recently been refurbished and turned it into a functional restaurant and hotel. Traditionally decorated restaurant is very posh and pristine. Staff was exceptional throughout. All of us opted their Argentinian-Style Hanger Steak with Chimichurri Sauce, French Fries and Green Salad with meat cooked to our liking. Tender and perfectly seasoned. No added salt on the french fries. Dessert was something we didn't shy away. I aimed for their Flan with Toasted Coconut, Carmel Sauce, and Coconut Praline. Simply delicious and feels like home. While the other two choose the royally luxurious Chocolate Fondant with Caramel Sauce and Sugared Almonds as well as the Chocolate Madness Cake with Dulce de Leche Y Nuez. All three choices are what weekends should be and how you start the New Year...heavenly! Such a nice way for us to end a fulfilling day and we definitely see ourselves returning and possibly spend a day or two next time we return to town. "The unexpected is something better than the expected."- Ryan C.

Yelp
We had a great time visiting this place, the food was good and it's a beautiful spot. We had such a great time that we wanted to plan an event there. This is where the problems set in. They tried to scam us giving us BS verbal quotes and then dragging their feet actually committing to anything. The event planner Jordani was either completely incompetent or straight up dishonest. I'm convinced their MO is to lure you in with a reasonable verbal quote until you have no more options and then screw your over when it's too late and are out of options. Even our third party planner said they were a nightmare to deal with and that they seemed like they were trying to take advantage of us. Maybe stay the night or eat at the restaurant BUT DO NOT RISK PLANNING AN EVENT HERE, THEY WILL TRY TO SCAM YOU!

Yelp
If you happen to visit here which is a must do not use google maps, you will never find it! Instead call the restaurant and get directions or exit on Xcanatún off the highway and turn right on Calle 21 then at end of street Jake left to Calle 30 and it's right by church. Even the taxi driver did not know how to get here! Outstanding service and amazing priority in the wonderful ambience with light jazz music on Saturday night. Definitely a place you must visit if you're in the area. Food portions are just right and you think you would be paying twice as much when in fact the prices are very reasonable for the quality of the food. Walk the grounds for their serene surroundings.

Yelp
We visited the Hacienda with a rather large group with kids in tow. Even though this place is world famous retreat they accommodated us and made us feel welcome. They also have a great menu and top notch service. We will definitely be back and we will be sure to get a sitter so we can soak in this romantic and beautiful hacienda. We highly recommend visiting.

Yelp
One of the most beautiful places I have ever stayed in. The hotel is a former XIX century hacienda in the middle of the jungle (15 mins from downtown Mérida). It has only 18 suites divided in three different buildings, surrounded by gardens and an impressive jungle. The rooms are luxurious and VERY spacious. The bathroom is huge!!! My wife and I loved to spend time in our room as it was very comfortable and nicely decorated. Food is AMAZING! The restaurant is not only beautiful and has great views to the gardens. The menu is a mix of Yucatán, Mexican and International food. All dishes I tried were superb! Try the Ceviche Don Pedro. Last but not least, people are super friendly!
