We had the pleasure of meeting a passionate father-and-son duo who have dedicated themselves to their lifelong project: Hagia Sofia Eco Farm.
The entire trip was fantastic. We traveled in a comfortable, air-conditioned van along a scenic route that passed through local towns and villages. As we drove higher into the mountains, the landscape became increasingly greener. Rodrigo, our guide (the saon), pointed out various local plants and trees along the way, making the journey even more interesting.
We made a quick stop to pick up some beers and fresh avocados for the guacamole we would later enjoy for lunch. Upon arriving at the farm, we were welcomed by the soothing sounds of nature—birds singing, bees buzzing—and the faint, pleasant scent of smoke from the outdoor kitchen. It felt like paradise: peaceful and serene.
Our visit began with a breakfast of tropical fruits, crispy tortillas with fresh guacamole, and refreshing carambola (star fruit) juice. Afterward, we took a leisurely walk across the river and through the gardens, where Rodrigo enthusiastically shared his knowledge of the farm’s diverse fruit trees and plants. He spoke passionately about their origins, blooming seasons, and fruit-bearing cycles, making the experience both informative and inspiring.
The gardens were amazing, and we found ourselves wishing we could stay a few nights in one of their cabins just to experience a sunrise walk through the lush greenery. We spotted hummingbirds, a woodpecker, lizards and some colorful butterflies. The variety of plants, from native species to those from faraway lands, was truly impressive. One unexpected surprise was discovering clean, well-maintained restrooms (not an outhouse) at the end of the garden walk—complete with running water and paper towels—in the heart of the jungle!
Next, we embarked on five exhilarating zip-line rides, each offering breathtaking 360° views of the surrounding mountains and forests. The local guides were incredibly helpful and attentive, even carrying my backpack and assisting with filming as my daughter and I soared through the treetops and over the riverbed.
After all the excitement, we sat down for lunch prepared by local women in the outdoor kitchen.
That was followed by a refreshing swim in the river with a small waterfall.
The mountain air was noticeably cooler and breezier than the coastal heat, making the dip even more enjoyable.
Before heading back, we explored an area where mangosteen and rambutan trees grow and discovered an abundance of other fruit trees and plants, including mango, papaya, avocado, pineapple etc.
The entire experience was unforgettable—a blend of adventure, relaxation and appreciation for nature. Hagia Sofia Eco Farm is a truly special place, and we left feeling inspired by the dedication and passion of the family behind it.
