"Dive Bar with Delicious Food Dive bar enthusiasts will appreciate the laissez faire attitude of the Hair of the Dog Pub a short walk from the Tennessee Aquarium. It's designed like an English pub, but carries a full selection of American craft beers. It's not a family spot to speak of, as smoking is allowed and you must be 21 years old to enter. The food is equally good, like the Turkey Reuben or the fish and chips."

Great from start to finish! The bartender that greeted me was pleasant, warm of night in professional. My server, Caleb, was friendly , prompt, attentive, but not overbearing. The black bean burger was tasty and filling.

Jennie Brockman

Google
JUST RECEIVED THE WORST MEAL EVER FROM HAIR OF THE DOG! The meatloaf was disgusting! Harder than a rock! I couldn’t break it on the table. Much less take a bite! I will never be back.

Google
Great dive bar with a friendly staff and good food. We were in quick for a beer and some appetizers. We had the pretzels and beer cheese dip and some of the fried cheese curds, both were great with perfect appetizer portions. Friendly bartender who was knowledgeable about the area. Took one point off for atmosphere because they allow smoking inside, just be aware of that if you are going.

As long as you really like a bar that you can smoke in, looks like an English pub, wood everywhere, pool and darts upstairs, and a deck. A deck if you want to sit outside, this place is great. If you don't like any of that stuff, you should probably try the Chili's across the street. Some of the best pub food in town, always get the drinks right, best service in all of downtown. And this place is so gay. 10 out of 10, will visit again, probably at least once a week. Try the Reuben rolls.

Google
First off you need to know that this is a smoker’s bar. If you can’t handle that, then don’t go. If you can look past that….WHAT A GEM! Tommy served up incredible drinks with kindness and humor. The food was a hell of a lot better than your typical bar food. I walked away wanting to come back again. This is one of the best dive bars I’ve ever been to. Highly recommended

Google
Best $5 salad I've ever had. Open late on a Sunday night, which was a lifesaver cause nothing else is open. Music wasn't too loud and was on point. Bartender was great and kind. Great selection of beer. They have pool. Not too smoky when we went. Perfect pub ambiance.

Google
First time at this restaurant and I'm so glad we went. We ate dinner and had drinks upstairs. Server, Manny was super nice and kept checking to see if we needed anything. Definitely recommend the Sunday Roast, fried cheese & Bungalow Pie. Also recommend the draft beer WanderLinger Blackbeary Hug. It's locally brewed and very tasty and I am not normally a beer lover. I will definitely be back next time I'm in area.

Google
This place was awesome. If you are looking for a dive vibe, this is it. This is an old school pub with pretty good food and super cheap drinks, I challenge you to find cheaper drinks! Our server on New Year’s Eve was great. We will 100% be back when we visit Chattanooga again. Note: It’s 21 and up I believe, so if you don’t like cigarette smoke maybe pick somewhere else.

Yelp
Fantastic food and atmosphere! Fish and Chips are on point and the Meatloaf meal is absolutely amazing! Highly recommend!

Yelp
We had a late lunch/early dinner here on a Saturday. It is right on the corner of a main thoroughfare so no restaurant parking. You can park on the street or pay to park in one of the near by lots. First surprise was people were smoking inside. Had no idea you could smoke inside anywhere unless it's a casino! Never fear, they have a back deck so you can eat without a side of smoke. We shared the Reuben egg rolls - 2nd surprise, they were pretty good. I'm not a big kraut person, so hence my surprise! I had the Bungalow dish, which is a play on cottage pie where the meat surrounds the mash potatoes . It was a pretty straight forward dish and not memorable. The server was personable and efficient.

Yelp
I visited hair of the Dog pub in either October or November when barhopping with a friend. This was actually the first draft Guinness beer that I ever had! Really good. As far as the service goes. I would say it could be improved a little bit. I wish the staff was a little bit nicer and not confrontational. As far as ambience goes. This is a very casual place to come if you're just trying to shoot a beer or do Mixology whatever your preference is. This place is great here and there. But I think some minor improvements can go a long way. And it is a smoking bar. So there is a lot of smoking and smell of tobacco. Which I personally don't smoke, but I think that would be disqualify here and there.

Yelp
Great people, authentic pub vibe, and the food was good, though I admit to being a little drunk before I got around to trying it. Like any good pub worth the name, the hang here is very informal and welcoming. People share conversation and a laugh while drinking, and the bartenders seem very cool and surprisingly engaging, given that they're the only sober ones there. The smoke smell is noticeable, so if you don't like it I'd suggest another place, but I loved being able to vape while drinking. The drink prices here made me giddy - my first tab was $31 for a Newcastle, a double Laphroaig, a single Glenlivet and a gin & tonic. It's a good thing I don't live closer or I'd ruin myself in there. Fantastic place for those without a stick in their rear over a smoky bar.

Yelp
A smokey British pub. The World Cup on the tele. A shot and a beer with a side of pumpkin pie at 11am. This all sounds like the start of an amazing day. I loved this place, smoke filled or not it was dark, cozy, and the bartender here, Allison?, was super nice! Just a heads up, parking here is almost exclusively paid. Belly up to the bar, it's 5 o'clock somewhere.
google avatar

Adam B.

Yelp
Dani the bartender was amazing. She gave good recommendations on what to eat. The bar stays open late and they serve food until 2 am. I felt like I was at my hometown Cheers. The bar itself is pretty cute. Don't overlook the upstairs. Cool chill spot that's not too touristy.
google avatar

Yelp
Very cool and eclectic place to stop and have a drink. Service was great. Noise level was perfect, you could easily carry on a conversation.

Emily R.

Yelp
My chicken tenders were EXTREMELY burnt and shriveled up. Looked like they were pulled from the bottom of the fryer at the end of the day. Very disappointed they this would be allowed to go out the door; let alone be something I paid $18 (including delivery) for

Yelp
The food was delicious- we had the nachos with a black bean patty! and the fish and chips! The fish was very fresh!! The service was great - friendly and fast! The ambiance was a classic pub feel !
google avatar

Thomas L.

Yelp
The smell of smoke was overwhelming. Didn't even order a drink before I left. Looked like a great place if you're a smoker, just not my thing.
google avatar

Troy C.

Yelp
This place had great staff except the lady in the hot pink hair.. she has no business working in a type of service industry.. we literally look in the door to see if she is the bartender.. if she is we leave.. which is a lot of times

Yelp
Dog friendly dive bar! Massive beer menu. Games and billiards upstairs and outdoor seating on the ground and top level. The interior smells like cigarettes and smoke. They have 2-3 vegetarian options. Service was great. Bathrooms were decently clean and private

Yelp
Horrible service, won't be back. 10/7/2024 I ordered lunch from here. I placed my to go order on the phone at 12:22 and was told give us 20 minutes. My order was simple. A Cobb salad with grilled chicken, an order of fried cheese and a sweet tea. I showed up at 12:45. To set the scene there are 2 dirty tables, a table with 2 men that had already eaten but were drinking- I did not go upstairs so I can't say who may or may not have been up there. We sit at the bar. The bartender in her pajamas, gave me my ticket and I gave her cash including a tip. She never said anything other than well it's not ready yet. We waited a good 15 minutes while the bartender was brushing her hair behind the bar & scrolling on her phone. She then disappeared. My workmate & I then noticed the cook come out and was standing around talking to another person, I guess the server. I asked that server to please get the purple haired bartender. Server asked why. I said I'd love to get my money back I've waited almost an hour. The cook goes into the kitchen magically my food is ready and he tosses it onto the bar. The cook was arguing with me that I don't need my money back because the food is ready. He also said he had to redo the chicken because he burnt it. I don't buy that & I was never informed this or communicated with at all. The purple haired bartender came back and was like the food is up. She had not given me my drink, said thank you for the tip, apologized about my wait or even checked on the 2 gentlemen who had brought their own empty beer cans to the bar in hopes of getting another round. None of the staff apologized, instead every one of them argued with a customer!! The bartender slapped my money on the bar & walked off. The big window in the front of the building was open so my workmate & I heard every bad word the staff had to say about us as we walked back to work with no lunch. The restaurant business is complex & I was a part of it for years. Communication & hospitality bring back customers & today was an example of why I won't be back!

Yelp
I have been going to this pub for years good is great and everything here recently I'm not sure if it's a new manager or what but he won't even let us in the door now it's been a month now and we didn't cause any problems we keep to our self eat drink play pool like everybody else in there the manager is not right in there he's selective in his customer service and wouldn't suggest going to this pub go to cbc it's a lot better r.i.p. Hair of the Dog

Yelp
Drove all the way in to go to this little place. It's a Cute little place, but smoking is allowed inside. I was shocked... Do place's still really allow that???? We had to leave immediately. My husband has asthma. Sorry guys!!

Yelp
So, its a pub thats stays open to 3 am in Chattanooga tn. That alone is worthy of at least 4 stars to me. The service was very good. The waitress was very accommodating and polite. We sat on the upstairs outdoor balcony. Lots of critters scurrying around in close proximity to our feet and table...(bugs, roaches). The waitress said that the near by construction must have stirred them up....okay.... Moving on...the food was okay for a pub. Large beer selection.very divey.

Tony S.

Yelp
Food was good, typical bar food and great prices. Great atmosphere. I would eat there again
google avatar

Mal L.

Yelp
I won't be back here. The service is terrible. The servers and bartenders were rude and I felt like a bother to them. Bathrooms were disgusting. I don't care if it's a pub it can still be a pleasant and clean place.
google avatar

Elayna W.

Yelp
AMAZING! Their food and service are superb. If you don't mind a little cigarette smoke, this is the place to go.
google avatar

Pat M.

Yelp
Nice place to spend a few hours enjoying a beer . Centrally located and helpful staff

J O.

Yelp
GAVE MY ID TO SOMEONE ELSE AND DID NOTHING. They asked to hold my ID in exchange for darts. When we were done I went back to get my ID to find out they had given it to someone else. The person called the bar when they realized and while I was on the phone with them the server asked if I wanted to close out. :| I then had to Uber to this person to trade IDs and Uber back downtown because no where lets you in without checking your ID. Getting Ubers there and back took us an hour and a half and cost $60+. They offered nothing for the inconvenience they caused my group. Other than that the place smells like cigarettes and is next to impossible to order from even when it's not busy.
google avatar

Mickey B.

Yelp
They do not know how to pour a Guinness. They call themselves a pub, yet they have no idea how to pour a proper pint. I wouldn't go there.

Steven S.

Yelp
Brunch was a fail. Eggs Benedict #2, biscuit was microwaved or old. Poached egg was hard boiled not runny. I like pepper but white gravy was brown and over peppered. Hashbrown casserole, not sure what it was drowned in but the potatoes seemed like thawed hashbrowns and never heated. I guess an Arnold Palmer here is lemonade. Service was slow and almost non existent.
google avatar

Michele W.

Yelp
Amazing service, time, and time again. The same associates come in to work everyday, they make it wonderful. We have dined downstairs and up. It's the same best service on both of them. They always make you feel welcome each time. I would recommend this spot each and every time. Y'all are amazing, especially Ky
google avatar

Todd W.

Yelp
Appetizers and entrees were brought out at the same time. Was given the wrong drink. Waitress seemed in another world. Food was very good
google avatar

MaryAnn P.

Yelp
Terrible service. Walked in, was seated quickly, which was nice. Our server, a female was not friendly at all. Kind of rude actually. Waited forever to take our drink order. Server was standing around chatting with another employee. Place was empty. Not impressed at all.

Christi M.

Yelp
Fantastic little spot! Smoking inside- so if you are not a smoker, or don't like smokers- scroll on. We were visiting from Atlanta and looking for a dive bar to hang out in- this bar is perfect! Food and service were on point, so much so that we made our way here twice during our short weekend visit. Over it so much I bought their shirt.

Edward J.

Yelp
Incompetent surly waiters. Allows smoking indoors and outside. Disgusting! Bizarre requirement for id's, even from those patrons of advance age drinking non-alcoholic ice tea. Food is mediocre at best. Have been several times but Never Again ! Forget this smelly dump.
google avatar

Meagan G.

Yelp
Cool old pub with authentic wood bar and chill vibe. Good prices on food and beer. Biggest downside for a non-smoker is it's smoky. Outdoor seating available in the far back of the first floor.
google avatar

Rob S.

Yelp
I had such high hopes for this place after looking online at it but once I got here was really disappointed. They are still on a severely limited menu, and their soda equipment was down so ended up with nothing to drink (I don't drink alcohol) and had to settle for something to eat that I really wasn't interested in. Would avoid this place until they go back to their full menu and their soda equipment is up and working. Had looked forward to coming here and now feel like I wasted time and energy to come here. Next time I'll go to the Irish Pub down near the aquarium
google avatar

Scott M.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place. But when I walked in the place stank of stale and fresh cigarettes. I have not seen a place that serves food allow smoking in over a decade and it reeked so bad that the smell would over power the food. Bleach!

Lynn D.

Yelp
The food was horrific and over priced had fish and chips it was disgusting greasy fish and chips are supposed to be a pub staple I definitely don't recommend them also the customer service was not so good they were more interested in talking to each other than their customers
google avatar

Bee W.

Yelp
We were looking for a chill dinner spot after a long day of downtown Chattanooga. This had the perfect environment for friends looking for good food, good drinks, and good conversations. The beer selection was good. Our servers recommendations hit hard and was so fun. The fish and chips was delicious. My friends had the bangers and mash, loaded pork nachos, and burgers. I tried the bangers and mash... so good and slightly spicy. The nachos were good but got soggy quickly. THE FRIES were THE BEST. Salted and peppered to perfection. I will be returning in the future.
google avatar

Alaysia S.

Yelp
been here a number of times. the staff typically acts like you're inconveniencing them anytime you need anything, but otherwise it's just your standard little old bar. the food is pretty good though
google avatar

Karen M.

Yelp
It was a lovely weekend in Chattanooga and we were interested in some Day drinking. This was the perfect place. 2 levels and a patio/deck out back. Dog Friendly. Darts, pool table and decent music. The bar service was good. We did not eat here but had a great visit and I will return.
google avatar

Yelp
Tony and I try to come here when we are in Chatty but this is a 21 and up establishment because they allow smoking inside. So, when Noel is with us we can't stop here but the atmosphere and food is killer here..Highly recommend. For a bar and bar style food, I have never had a bad meal here.... Today we had eaten earlier at Luipi's Pizza Pie a few blocks over, but we stopped here on our way to Northside to grab a drink and I just had to taste the ROCK SHRIMP HUSHPUPPIES so Tony and I opted to split them. They are served 6 to a serving with some Cajun Remoulade..that is KILLER...I could put that on every sandwich and use for dipping with anything...delicious!!!! Tony had to have one of their tshirts...so not bad for $28 ...it was tshirt material but a hoodie, grey with Hair of the Dog Logo...very nice !!!! Can't wait to eat there again!!!!

Teresa G.

Yelp
First of all- dog friendly with a covered patio out back. The server even brought out a bowl of water for her. Secondly- The food was the right amount and excellent. I tried the wheat beer. Very good. I had the Ben Franklin sandwich. It is like a club sandwich. Husband had the fish and chips. He said the fish and chips and London we're better but these are pretty good.
google avatar

Alexia K.

Yelp
Pretty good place - my friends and I came here for drinks on a night off. I had the beer cheese soup which was thick and heavy - but not bad. My friend got the pretzels and beer cheese dip. They were a bit heavy for my liking and I definitely craved a salad soon after eating. They mostly have beer, but they do some mixed drinks too if you're not a beer fan (like me). I had screwdrivers. It wasn't anything fancy, but then again its just orange juice & vodka. I would come back here again but its definitely not a first choice for me. It was dark inside but there are lots of cool things to look at on the walls and ceilings. The bathrooms were clean. Drinks, food, and clean bathrooms. They've the basics down but the place just wasn't my jam. If you're a guy or gal who likes pubs then this will be to your liking. If you're looking for fruity drinks for girls night out maybe consider your options. Not a bad joint though.

Robert R.

Yelp
Calls itself a "British Pub", but there's very little British about it apart from the Union Jack Flag on the door. It's open late and that's probably the only real plus. Unfriendly bar staff although the table runner (who we didn't use) seemed to be making an effort. Instead of having a bar in the pool room upstairs, they have a rope pulled dumb waiter to deliver the drinks. Just another dive bar...
google avatar

Alexis B.

Yelp
A decent pub in the heart of Chattanooga. Lots of beers on draft and in cans and bottles. Full bar if you're not a beer drinker. Mimosas if you like. Nothing fancy, but it's a pub!

Jack D.

Yelp
So me and the boys walk in there. We're from Iowa City so we know different than this place. We have Iowa IDs and my friend who went first, they interrogated him about his address and such and claimed he was too drunk when none of us were to cause a problem. Then we sat upstairs after a table opened and they said it was dirty and we had to move. So, we left and now I'm writing this review. It seemed pretty cool and their food is probably good, but we were treated like trash for being 21 and 22 for no reason. We just looking for a drink and to chill for about 30 minutes and take an Uber home. Do not go here after 1 am from my experience. **Disclaimer -- I have nothing against this bar, but the person who was supposedly in charge was being a really disrespectful to us for what seems like no reason
google avatar

April E.

Yelp
I give this place a a 3points due to customer service. I get the covid rules in bars but you do NOT need to be fkin rude. You can teach your people to still be polite and professional. The watriess was so shaky in her tone . Keep in mind folks chose to come out. Stephanie was the only waitress professional and productive. the food was good . but the staff needs training on customer service period.

Emily S.

Yelp
Super cool environment. We stopped for an appetizer and beers. Friendly and quick service. The pretzels with brown mustard and beer cheese was our starter.

Yelp
Stopped by this place Sunday afternoon when visiting a friend. First time in Chattanooga, probably should have been concerned when they had a Chili's in a prime location downtown. Yikes So ordered drinks when I got in. I ordered the cider on draft. It tasted pretty flat, like no flavor at all. Perhaps the shipping from Austin destroyed the flavor, but I was not a fan and slowly set back to a Malibu and coke (fruity is the W2G), For food my friends ordered the Bavarian pretzels and I ordered the fried chicken. Looking at other reviews it seemed that this was a good bet. The server suggested it as well, so that's what I got. My friends enjoyed their pretzels but the chicken was...something. First thing I noticed was that the chicken was weirdly dark when it arrived on my plate. It was obviously burnt but I was tired and hungry so I just dealt with it. Bad mistake. It was dry, and crunchy, and just a travesty to the poor chicken that had to die. Can you imagine dying for the consumption of humans and then a human burning you making you inediible. Literally a spit on their grave. SHAMEFUL The broccoli that I got with tasted funny, and I judged it based on the presentation of the chicken. The mashed potatoes with it tasted strangely of the boxed potatoes I ate as a kid, and the gravy was suspicious. Yeah unless you're eating a appetizer I would suggest staying away from entrees. The server was super nice though!
google avatar

Steven L.

Yelp
This is an English (British) Pub. So, you can get English food here of all sorts and other etc. Having a great fun night with friends. I usually get fish and chips and that's what I got tonight . The fish is delicate but delicious. The fries that go with it go great with ketchup on them. I will take some pictures. Anyway , customer service was fast as I got waited on about one minute after walking in the door. How great is that. It's located Market Street which Chattanooga's most popular street as it has been for over a 100 years.
google avatar

Dan K.

Yelp
Cool pub, but I define a good pub by if they make me feel welcome. Maybe this is a locals only. I went way out of my way to stop here thinking this would be a good experience. I enjoyed the touristy big river much more friendly.
google avatar

Marley H.

Yelp
I loved my visit to this place. Only thing keeping it from 5 stars is the smoking inside. Gross!! The food was delicious. Tried the fish and chips and also the chorizo chicken sandwich. Yum! It was seriously so good! I will definitely be back. The atmosphere was neat too it looks cool on the inside. Love it.

Yelp
Came in after a nice day of hanging in Chattanooga with our dog, left disappointed and our food packed in Togo boxes because of the 1 1/2 long wait on food. Only giving 2 stars for the server who was trying his hardest to make sure we were as satisfied as we could be... Food that was ordered: Don't Poke Her Nachos (asked for no onion/extra tomato and STILL received onion in my togo container mixed with the tomato and black bean patty), the Blue Ox Burger and the Ultimate Jack Sampler. The nachos were unsatisfying and left me with a big question mark as to why they took so long to ever make it to us while we were at the restaurant since it was just a box of chips then a black bean burger smashed down with onions and tomatoes then a container of cheese, we ended up tossing it in the trash on our way home after just taking 3 bites from it. My boyfriend wasn't satisfied with his burger or fries and ended up eating something out of the microwave when we got home, overall all the food minus the sampler (we ate that as we waited for our food to be ready at the restaurant) was tossed in the trash, we hate wasting food but sadly it was just all inedible, even the sampler we ate at the restaurant was barely edible due to the saltiness of it all. We will NOT be coming back for food any time soon, drinks maybe but never for food.

Yelp
I love hair of the dog! It's a really fun bar to come to at night and during the day. I really like the outside area it's a great place to enjoy nice weather. I also love that they have 2 dart boards and a pool table so it's always a fun place to come and hang out. The drinks are great and they have a good variety of beer as well. I also love the food options that they have. My favorite is the Reuben egg rolls which are pretty much amazing. The fish and chips from here is really great as well. And the best part is that its all very reasonably priced so getting food and a few drinks isn't expensive. I think the only downfall is that people still smoke inside and unfortunately that means that your hair and clothes will smell like stale cigarettes after you leave. But if you don't like that there are plenty of tables outside that are covered and it's a very cute place to sit!
