7 local foods to try in Fukuoka - SilverKris

"Known for gomasaba, a regional specialty of raw mackerel sashimi dressed with white sesame, soy and mirin; thanks to proximity to the Genkai Sea’s fishing grounds, the mackerel are fresh enough to eat year-round and the dish is commonly found at izakayas across the city." - MICHELE KOH MOROLLO

Liked very much their speciality "Goma-saba". It's sesame sweet soy sauce seasoned raw mackerel with a lot of minced green onion. Sweet-type soy sauce and the flavor of sesame with wasabi goes altogether very well and can not stop eating! Hakata is well-known as one of food heavens in Japan, and there are many others that are more famous than this such as Ramen, Motsu-nabe etc but I say this is the best for me. Already visited 2 times, and I'll repeat whenever coming to Hakata. Make sure you you order with a bowl of white rice!

Beautiful and fresh food. The quality of the food is worth the price. And the service was so fast. The staff was so friendly to me and spoke English.

Reservations are a must! For our first visit, we walked in only to be informed that it was full. We made reservations online and went a few days later and were not disappointed. The signature gomasaba (mackerel in sesame sauce) was an absolute delight, with the fish so fresh and rich in flavour and texture from the sauce! The other signature dish, the live squid - and yes, you actually see its tentacles still moving - was a spectacle but more of a gimmick and tasted pretty much like the usual ika sashimi. That said, the tempura made from the tentacles of the live squid was very well done! The live squid aside, I found the other dishes served as part of the seafood course meal far more delicious across the board, and I would highly recommend one to go for the course meals to try them.

This place is famous for goma saba and it did not disappoint. The pieces of fish were thick and generous, and the seasoning was perfect. Obviously the sesame really just takes it to another level. Worth a try when you’re in the area, and this place seems to be as good as any.

I'm sorry to say that, this place doesn't seems to welcome foreigners. We had claimed that our food wasn't provided until other table(later order than us) finished their meal. Then I had canceled all cuisines. By that moment, magically all what we ordered be set on our table lol. If wanna visit here, keep in mind to chant "I will cancel all foods" toward servers. Then you can get foods!

It’s a cozy local place. The seafood looked really fresh as they’ve got a fish tank. I just loved tofu and sake vessels( of course sake it-selves), and fried taro..!!

Good food, good price, quantity of food is a lot even for lunch. I was just little bit disappointed because they don't have squid today but I enjoyed sesami mackerel sashimi and seasoned cod roe a lot.

Don't go here. If you happen to go here because some blogger said this place is a must. Don't. They might even mention to make a reservation because it gets very busy. Don't make a reservation either. I don't know if this a standard practice in Japan, but to make a reservation it forced me to select foods that I would be eating and the selection was limited and the portion was based on the number of party. I understand the attempt to expedite the cooking process but I had to wait over 30 minutes for the appetizer. So what was the point? Food is on the pricier end but quality was above par - in good conscience I can not recommend this place.
