A fascinating glimpse into Japan’s history! Hakone Checkpoint is a well-preserved historical site that gives you insight into the Edo period’s travel and security system. The museum and reconstructed buildings are informative and engaging, with displays that bring history to life. The location by Lake Ashi offers beautiful views, making it both educational and scenic. Perfect for history enthusiasts, families, or anyone exploring Hakone’s cultural attractions!

A well organized historical fortress to secure this district. You can see lots of heritage stuffs and designated layout and artwork here. Good to take a look at this place after having the pirate boat cruising. Enjoy.

Visited Hakone Checkpoint and really enjoyed stepping back in time! The reconstructed gates and guardhouses are super well done, and the small museum has lots of interesting historical details. The lookout point offers amazing views of Lake Ashi and the surrounding mountains. Easy to walk around and the staff are friendly. A great stop if you’re exploring Hakone—history buffs and casual visitors alike will enjoy it!

One of the best places in my overall Japan trip. The detailed rebuilt checkpoint buildings are amazing. The woodworking detail and the preservation is something to be proud of. The staffs are very helpful in explaining and the view is stunning!

A rebuilt old checkpoint fort. The old buildings have been reconstructed with care for the historical accuracy. It has brief placards talking about life at the fort, roles and responsibilities for staff members, and the construction of the fort. I would recommend walking up the hill to the watchtower for the view.

The Hakone Checkpoint is a historical site that recreates a major inspection station from the Edo period. Located along the Tokaido Road, it offers a glimpse into feudal Japan with reconstructed buildings and informative exhibits. Ideal for history enthusiasts.

Beautiful place with a view of Lake Ashi, and if you get lucky and the sky is clear, you can maybe get a glimpse of Mt. Fudži too. Veru nice walk around, with plenty of small restaurants and shops, toilets, everything is close and accessible.

Yelp
When you're visiting Hakone, you've got to check out the Hakone Loop. Along that route, you can visit the Hakone Checkpoint and Museum, which represents a security checkpoint on the highway from Edo to Kyoto during the Edo Period. The museum itself represents a construction of the checkpoint, which you can walk through that also features displays and historical information. It's really neat to be able to see how this was set up in the past but expected to be quaint and nothing too mind blowing. Within the outdoor section of checkpoint museum lies another museum, which illustrates the construction, as well as a model of how large a royal caravan was when traveling along this highway. The best part of this museum, however, is when you climb up the hill and experience the breathtaking views of the checkpoint, Lake Ashi, and the surrounding hills. Visiting the museum is inexpensive and definitely worth the view alone. Expect to spend maybe an hour here.

Yelp
Museum is meh but view from outside the museum was amazing. If you visit a Hakone Checkpoint, museum admission fee is included. Museum itself is very small and no much really to see. They have a small souvenir shop selling typical stuff. I did purchase a post card with Mt Fuji and Lake Ashi but I assume something like that is available pretty much anywhere. The view was amazing from just outside the museum. If not for this view, I would probably rate the museum three stars. The summit of Mt Fuji is often covered by thick clouds. Just happened to be clouds moved and I got to see the summit just a long enough for me to take pictures!

Yelp
Hakone checkpoint museum is one of the best ways to experience of history in this part of Japan. Close to the other tourist attractions, this mostly outdoor museum sits along the eastern shore of Lake Ashi. At 500 JYP or $6.00 CDN, the admission fee is well worth the cost. Within the outdoor section of the museum, you'll visit the reconstructed buildings that made up the checkpoint - a border control stop between the cities of Tokyo and Kyoto. Here you will learn about the importance of this checkpoint, and why it was chosen to become the most strict and regulated border crossing within the country. Be sure to climb up the hill at the back (there ate stairs) to get to the watch towers. Here you have a view of the entire museum, the lake and on a nice day, Lake Ashi in the distance. As you continue along the path, you'll come to an indoor section of thr museum where you can see models of the long processions of people as they matched from cities such as Kyoto to Tokyo, showing their power and wealth and why Tokyo liked this so--called display of power as a defence tactic. I would give yourself 1-2 hours to visit this location. We paired this with the boat ride across lake Ashi and had more than enough time to do both in the same day. The museum has information in Japanese and is self-guided. I recommend picking up an English pamphlet as it contains information about each station as well as a map. It's a fantastic stop to learn about the history and I would recommend this for anyone seeking more history about the area.

Yelp
Hakone Checkpoint is very close to the Hakone-machi port where you get dropped off from the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise. You get a mini discount here with the Hakone Free Pass. Everything about this checkpoint is completed renovated and reconstructed. You get to learn the history about the purpose of the Hakone Checkpoint and there's a small souvenir shop. There's a long flight of stairs you can take to get a good view of Lake Ashi as well.
