5 Best Day Trips from Tokyo | Condé Nast Traveler

"This expansive onsen features hot spring baths with forest views in an especially serene environment. It's easy to spend hours relaxing in the different baths, sauna, and nap rooms. Everything is clean and calm. To really get into the experience, book a 20-minute back or foot rub, or a 60-minute full body massage with oil. If you're hungry, the restaurant specializes in charcoal cooking that ranges from bar snacks like grilled ayu (freshwater fish) to multi-course meals. You can also get a soft-serve or juice from the take-out window and have it in the garden, or an aperitif." - Brandon Presser

Really enjoyed my time here at Yuryo. Outside public onsen is available with lots of baths. Sauna was there as well and there was a special event which occurs 3 times a day where a staff comes in with a huge hand fan and blows hot air - a heads up it's super hot🔥🥵 We also dined in at the restaurant in the premise. We had the full course meal which was very delicious and had a great experience! There were a couple of massage places within the area too but didn't get to try as they closed at 8pm.

Really nice private day-use onsen experience. Staff are great, very polite and helpful. If you have a Hakone Free Pass you can save about $6-8 CAD when paying upon arrival. Booking online in advance is the best way to go. They didn’t have the time I requested, but they kindly booked another time close to my original request and then confirmed via email. They have everything you might need like hairdryer, towels, shampoo, etc. No washrooms in the private suites, so if you might need to use the washroom, make sure to get the kimono so you can go in and out of your suite. There’s no view except for the small forest, which is what makes this nice and private. Of course, you can hear the people talking in neighbouring suites so make sure to keep your conversation volume at a politely low level.

Absolutely wonderful. We went during the first week of December which made the surrounding scenery even more beautiful with the vibrant leaves and crisp cool air. We reserved the Botan Room ahead of time and were greeted with a warm welcome when we checked in. The room itself was very clean, and the accommodations were great. Please be aware that although it is a private area, you can hear everything on the other side of the wall outside. We were lucky that the other guests were respectful and kept their voices low. Overall, we had the most relaxing time.

This was my first onsen experience, so nothing to measure against. It was a relaxing experience, but not sure I would actively seek it out again. Had a private room that was clean, where most of everything I felt was needed was provided. Though, had to rent a robe for a very nominal price at the front desk. They offer a complimentary shuttle from the train station, which is very handy.

Absolutely 5 stars !! I am a travel agency agent, and today I visited Yuryou for the first time. Before going there, my group of six foreign guests and I had been unable to enter another day-use hot spring, which led us to Yuryou. The food was delicious, and I was very satisfied with the spacious facilities and beautiful garden. Actually, one of our guests, who is elderly, felt unwell while bathing, but the staff were incredibly kind and provided assistance, for which the family members were very grateful. I would definitely like to bring my guests back to Yuryou the next time I have the opportunity to guide them in Hakone.

Absolutely beautiful experience. We booked a private onsen experience before our visit, it was easy to book and we were so happy when they replied with a reservation. On the reservation they also state which room you will be getting. We were really pleased with the room we had booked. You pay at the onsen, it worked out around £68 which was for the whole room and for 2 hours which we thought was a really amazing price. The robes were really nice to wear and made the experience even better especially with the shoes. To look out in to the woods was really beautiful, we went for this time in the hope to see the sunset but instead we got to experience the daylight and night time. We also heard monkeys and saw an outline of a small one in the tree! Super awesome! There is a net next to the pool to fish out any leaves that fall in to the onsen It was all super clean, with clear instructions on how to use everything. As we booked the private onsen we got the robes and towels included in our price which was much appreciated as we hadn't brought a towel with us. As the water is just over 40 degrees it does get overwhelming so we stayed in for 5 minutes and then a 15-20 minutes sit down on the cushions inside. There is also vending machines outside which helped us cool down. We also got complimentary tofu cake bars which were lovely. There is a gift shop as well which was nice to look at. There is a free shuttle bus between Hakone Yuryo and the train station. A fantastic experience which I would recommend to anyone. The staff are also really lovely

Private onsen r avail to reserve for folks who want privacy or have tattoo. Reservation window avail 1 month in advance. There's a restaurant onsite but can only order a bento box n get it delivered to private room. There's a shuttle from hakone-yumoto station. Don't walk here if you cannot handle hilly paths

On my last visit to Hakone Yuryo, I was immediately enveloped by the serene atmosphere as soon as I stepped off the free shuttle from Hakone Yumoto Station. The rustic charm of the traditional Japanese architecture and the soothing sounds of nature set the perfect tone for relaxation. 😳 I had booked a private open-air bath in advance, which turned out to be a fantastic decision. The moment I sank into the warm, mineral-rich waters, all my stress melted away. The view of the lush greenery surrounding the bath was breathtaking, making it feel like a hidden paradise. After the bath, I enjoyed a delicious meal at the Irori restaurant, where the hearth-cooked cuisine added a unique and authentic touch to the experience.😍 Every visit to Hakone Yuryo feels like a rejuvenating escape, and I can't wait to return. Just remember to book your reservation in advance to secure your spot! 🥰🥰🥰😳

Yelp
The perfect experience away from the city. We were looking for a more private bath as this was our 2nd visit to the area, having done the public ones in an earlier trip. Super authentic experience with robes and sandals, we got the XL room with stone bath and incredible view to complete the experience. The onsite restaurant was a nice finish to the day, all ordering via QR/phone for the language challenged. We would definitely return. BTW the front desk was super helpful with phone reservations in English as well as the reception area, don't miss out.

Yelp
I just had the best mineral bath ever with a view to die for. You have to get the private bath if you want some privacy. We got massages afterward. It felt so good. Then we ate in their Cafe. I had the eel, Japanese beef a la carte.I had to cook it on the grill in front of me. My son had the trout on a stick he was not a big fan because it had a lot of bones. And that chicken karaage was delicious. Just make sure after your bath you drink plenty of fluids. It was worth the walk up the stairs and the bus ride and the train from Tokyo. I decided that we're going to catch a taxi back to the train station.

Yelp
EVERYTHING ZEN We spent a blissfully serene 60 minutes at this geothermal hot spring in Japan. Having spent our first two days in the bustling metropolis of inner Tokyo, it was nice to escape the labyrinth of skyscrapers for a change. A lengthy train ride (which used a series of switchbacks up a mountain, no less!) brought us to Hakone on 7/20/19, where we spent a full day enjoying the countryside. A free shuttle took us from the train station up to this picturesque 'onsen'. The water is heated by geothermal energy and comes from natural sources so it's definitely NOT safe to drink! You'll need to make a reservation in advance as this place fills up fast. 5300¥ buys you 1hr in a room that accommodates up to 4 people. Though there are many choices for hot baths in Japan, most of them are separated by gender *and* have strict policies against tattoos. Even in 2019, body art is something the Japanese still haven't fully embraced due to the association of tattoos with the Yakuza and other organized crime syndicates (the USA is surprisingly progressive by comparison). Since we didn't want to be split up or turned away because we each have small-yet-noticeable inkings, we had no choice but to book a private room. Once we got our key from the front desk, we walked around to our zen paradise and got comfortable. It's recommended that you rinse off first, using the shower head and soaps provided. The water hovered right around hot tub temperature (roughly 95°F) and was easy to get acclimated to. Our room faced a beautifully lush valley with a steep drop less than 1m beyond our bath. Hearing nothing but the sound of trickling water and sporadic bird chirping made for a tremendously peaceful afternoon. Once the hour was up, we dried off and checked out. They have a small gift shop with snacks & drinks available for purchase. Inside the room, they offered complimentary fruit jelly and free hand fans which became SUPER useful throughout the remainder of our trip. * TL;DR * $50 is a small price to pay for what will surely be a defining point in my life's quest for #UltimateZen. Understand that the experience is more akin to "romantic soak with a partner" than it is "jacuzzi party with friends", so don't expect to bring a case of sake and get all rowdy. Oh, and don't go showing off your Iron Maiden full sleeve tattoo 'round these parts. I think cyborg Eddie looks awesome on your forearm (I really do), but let's face it: management frowns upon visible tats and might straight up deny you entry. Exercise good judgment, be discreet! I'm glad I got to share this moment with my fiancée and travel partner, Nichole C. Our visit to Hakone Yuryo was wonderful, an unforgettable hour where the stress of trying to navigate a foreign country just melted away. Highly recommended, ありがとうございます !

Yelp
I really enjoyed the private Onsen experience here. It costs $4000-6000 JPY depending on the size of the bath you get and it was totally worth it. We got the type 1 room which was 4000 yen and it fit 2 people very comfortably. You get keys to a room which has a bench area for you to put on your shoes, a sink, free toiletries items such as cotton swabs, shower cap, comb, and towels. There is also a table and sitting area in the room for you to relax. Outside on the balcony, you have a bath that's surrounded by trees and you can enjoy the scent of nature. You also have a table and two patio chairs, as well as a showering area with body wash and shampoo. The bath itself was great and very relaxing. The room was spacious, clean, and comfortable. Wished we had a bit more time as the hour passed by too quickly. After the Onsen, we went to the restaurant to grab a bite. We ordered the udon in milky broth, the tempura, and some mushrooms to cook on the grill. The udon was 5/5 and so worth it. The broth was very tasty. The tempura was alright but not the best choice after a bath. It was too oily and the batter too thick. The mushroom was fun to cook on the grill but was dry and not worth the price tag. Overall, wonderful time here and the free shuttle was a bonus because that would have been a lot of walking to get there from the station. We spent about $100 there for baths and food which wasn't too bad. If you do public Onsen, it would be a lot less.

Yelp
Hot spring has been on my bucket list. I did some hot spring options and found this place. We did reservation the same day in the morning around 10 am and got the reservation for 2 pm. This place has the bus that will pick u up at the station nearby and drop you off. At first, we didn't see the bus and didn't want to wait for it so we take a walk. If nature and walking are your fav things to do then you can try to walk enjoy the nature. Just be careful since you need to walk up the stairs and a lot of spiders along the walking area. I think walking kind of tiring so when we go back we take the bus to get to the train station. We get there earlier than the appointment and they offered if we want to use it right away since they have it open so we just take the offered. We reserved option two that has an open-air hot spring or outside view which is the mountain area. Price was pretty good! We did it for a one-hour reservation but done in like 30 mins hot springs and relaxing for a while and get ready to check out so one hour is a perfect time. You must try their Yuzu Jelly dessert! really good! I only find this Jelly dessert with fruits inside it, yummy. In that area nearby station so many desserts places . Definitely worth to go visit the hot spring and Hakone area!

Yelp
I believe this is the first search result when I search for "hakone day spa". I searched for a day spa because Hakone was one of the day trip for me during my stay at Tokyo. BTW hakone is only about 1.5 hours away from shinjuku station. Anyway, an hour was all that we needed for the onsen bath. Con 1 (and the only Con I had in the experience) - I couldn't make any reservation online, I don't think that system is available. You need to call in to reserve the day spa rooms. No need to reserve for restaurant. Because I couldn't make a reservation online and didn't want to call in from oversea, we ended up trying our luck by just walking in. At first the host said it was fully booked (that was Sunday at 3pm btw). But not sure if it was a last minute cancel or what, the staff behind him said there is one room available for an hour. There are 3 types of private room, which honestly I dont know much of a difference besides the size and how fancy the room is. But for 2 people the smallest room was all we needed. The room was 4000 yen, but because we had the Hakone day pass, I believe another 10% off. Which is really cool because One-admit for the public bath was around 1000 yen, and you need to rent towels too The room was easy to find, just match the character on the key. The room was really clean, it has many toiletry. There was some snacks on the small table which was available for sale at the gift shop. We didn't waste any time and go to the outdoor shower in our room and then try the onsen immediately. Honestly the onsen tub could probably fit 4. It was HUGE! For 2 people it was so spacious. It was nice to be able to find a day spa at this rate. Going to an onsen after the long walk was really nice. Especially after traveling on the plane the day before too there are 2 bottles of tea and 2 bottles of water in the refrigerator. It was 300 or 400 yen.. forgot, but its nice to have that in the room. Gotta have a cold drink after the hot onsen bath and didn't have to go to the vending machine outside!

Yelp
My husband and I emailed to book a private onsen (type 2 with forest view) a month in advance and they replied promptly to confirm the reservation (pay with cash or credit card at checkin). It came out to around $105 USD for two hours, although the room fits four people. You can take their free shuttle at the hakone yumoto station, or just walk up 15 minutes along the road for great views! We came on a Tuesday 2-4pm so it wasn't busy. Staff were friendly and gave us a bag with our towels and rental robes. The room was immaculately clean and spacious. we thoroughly enjoyed our time napping and soaking in the onsen, and getting bottles of tea at their vending machine when it got hot. We extended our time by 30 minutes so we didn't have to rush our showers. I think it was quiet because we heard people cleaning next door instead of new guests. Go on a weekday if you're able to avoid weekend crowds of tourists and locals combined. Renting the robes was so worth it for 100 yen too! They provide face foaming wash, shampoo, conditioner, body wash and a hair dryer (no lotion). If we come back to hakone we will definitely book again at Hakone Yuryo! the private experience is super relaxing.

Yelp
Complimentary direct shuttle bus from Hakone Yumoto station to Hakone Yuryo. Day spa only with no beds or no overnight stays. Perfect since we could only stick around for a few hours. Site - Easy to use and provides great visuals of what to expect when you arrive. Private Room Type 3 - $60 per hour. Room comes with water (extra charge ~$1.50), hair ties (I forgot mine!), wash towels, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, tea, and private heated room with chairs and tables. There is also a private phone line to the front desk incase you request food, desserts, or alcohol. Towels and robes included in the package price. Restaurant - Mediocre food, except for the amazing warm soba. Aburi Gozen (Y1800) - Grilled seasonal fish was fishy, hard, and bony. All of the other small dishes were not good. Warm Soba - Recommended by the waiter over the cold soba. It was amazing, delicious, and I finished it all. Curry rice - Rice was purple. Delicious, warm, comforting, heavy. Stewed beef tendon with Miso - Thick, rich delicious broth. Cannot drink by itself. Used this with the leftover rice.

Yelp
I first discovered Hakone Yuryo when I was looking for places that had private onsens, or hot springs. Despite the fact that I'm not a prude or afraid of some nudity, I did not want to be naked in a big hot spring with a whole bunch of other women. So I stumbled upon Hakone Yuryo, which offers beautiful private hot springs in three categories. The smallest is fit for 1-2 people while the biggest one is fit for 4-8 people. I decided, since I was here for such a short period of time, I would go big or go home. I emailed them exactly a month before my intended date to make a reservation and they responded within 24 hours confirming my reservation. When I arrived early, they were able to take us after a quick check in. Those using the biggest private onsen get free yukata rental, which was nice since we used it to lounge around in our room after we finished using our onsen. There's a bathroom with amenities to make yourself presentable again, a two couch lounge area inside for you to relax before or after your time in the hot spring, as well as lounge chairs outside in the hot spring area to sit. There's water for sale in the fridge in the room as well as a "shower" outside to clean yourself before and after going into the hot spring. I had rented the largest room for 2 hours and it cost about $160 USD, which I thought was worth in the end. We were able to relax in the privacy of our own private hot spring and relax on our last day in the Tokyo area before moving onto the Kansai region. I highly recommend it! They provide a shuttle bus from the train station to the onsen. I highly recommend you take the shuttle as the walk is quite steep and may not be for everyone. There's a timetable at the shuttle stop at the onsen so you can check it upon arrive so you can plan accordingly.

Yelp
Soooo worth coming here if you have an afternoon to burn during your trip in Tokyo. Their website is in english which made it very easy for us to book everything online. This onsen is located 1.5 hours away from Shinjuku. I would recommend booking your train tickets for the Romance Car a few weeks in advance. Thar way you can select your seats and get a nice view for the ride. You will still need to go to the ticket counter to get the gate entrance tickets. The shuttle bus stop was a little hard to find at first. But the people there were very friendly and directed us to the right way. The whole experience was amaaazing. The private bath was definitely worth the 1.5 hr commute. It was very relaxing and the rooms were beautful. We also got an hour massage (make sure you book ahead of time) and it was sooo good. They really know how to apply pressure to the pressure points and i definitely left the onsen feeling like a new person. Dont forget to get their soft serve ice cream! They were delicious!! The staff were so friendly and kind. We had such a wonderful time here.

Yelp
Need a break away from the hustle and bustle of Toyko? Check! Need to relax your tired muscles from the millions of miles you've walked each day? Check! Want to share a private osen with your significant other? Check!!!!!!!!! A quick day trip from Tokyo, Hakone Yuryo is the perfect day trip! Only about 2 hours by train, it serves as a convenient escape for your weary calves! We made reservations through the website and it was confirmed by the next day. Easy peasy! We got a private room for an hour and came out to $45 bucks. Awesome since I don't think I could last longer than that in a hot bath! Add on the 60 minutes massage for about $55 / person and you're in heaven!!!! Would definitely definitely recommend this to anyone interested in visiting an osen on their trip to Tokyo! Your muscles will thank me!!!!!!

Yelp
When in Japan, hubby and I wanted to experience an onsen. However if you're new to onsens, these natural hot springs are typically experienced in the nude and males and females have separate bathing areas. Being quite shy, I researched private onsens prior to our trip to Japan. Hakone Yuryo was one such onsen that consistently came back with great reviews. Hubby and I took the early Odakyu Romancecar train from Shinjuku station and toured around Hakone before making our way back to Hakone Yumato station. There is a free shuttle pickup at one end of the train station that picks up patrons heading to Hakone Yuryo. One could walk from the station but the road is quite steep getting there. When we arrived, we registered and obtained our yukatas and keys to the private onsen. There are several options for types of private onsen. Hubby and I splurged and got the most expensive one (came out to something like $99 for one hour use of the private onsen and sitting room). There is a prescribed way of preparing to use the onsen which includes ensuring that you have first washed your hair and body with the provided shampoos and body wash. The washing station, like the actual onsen, was outside in open air with views of trees but still private. Bathing suits or swimwear of any kind are not permitted when using the onsen. Be warned that individuals with tattoos may not be permitted use of the facilities due to association with gangs or criminal organizations. Once cleansed, we slowly made our way into the 40 degree Celsius water. There is something very relaxing about being in an onsen. However make sure you drink plenty of water as it is possible to become lightheaded (as I did) from the hot temperatures! Hairdryer and towels are also provided with use of the private onsen. Tea and some crackers were also provided for enjoyment after the onsen experience. When our hour time frame was up, we returned our used yukatas and the keys to the registration desk and went to the on-site restaurant to eat. The restaurant offers several dining options including robata (chargrilled), irori (sunken hearth), aburi (torched pressed sushi), and gozen (set meal). Hubby and each ordered gozen with tempura, chawanmushi, sashimi, rice, pickled vegetables, and miso soup. The meal was very nicely presented in beautiful dishes, and laid before us in the table as we sat in sunken dining format. Long review aside, we had a very memorable experience at Hakone Yuryo and would definitely recommend it for anyone looking to try the onsen experience.

Yelp
During our three day trip to Hakone, we purposely booked a private open-air bath to relax our muscles and replenish our energy at Hakone Yuryo. It was a very good experience for us and Hubby still remember how relaxing it was when we first dipped ourselves inside the 40 degree hot water. Private open-air bath is definitely a way to go if you want more privacy and relaxation time inside the mineral-rich spring water. There are three different types of private open-air baths starting from 3,900 yen, 4,900 yen and 5,900 yen (hourly rate). A total of 19 private rooms available at the premise. A private bath is quite a luxury especially at an onsen. An onsen needs to have one of 19 beneficial minerals such as iron and aluminium, and the water needs to be naturally warmer than 25 degree Celsius. We chose the third type (Ajisai) which was the biggest one and it was perfect for two to four people. Children are not allowed in the public open-air baths so if you plan a visit with your children, don't forget to book the private bath. We reserved the private bath months before our trip to Japan through email to hakoneyuryo@odakyu-hotel.co.jp just in case the room got fully booked. If you're not sure how long you will use the private bath for, just opt for one hour first. The front desk staff informed us that we can prolong the usage by calling the front desk, 15 minutes before our finishing time. Whether you go to onsen or jimjilbang (Korea's public bath), the rules will always be the same. Before bathing, always sit down and wash yourself first with warm water at the washing station. The bucket, soap and shampoo will be provided at the wash area. Do not dip the wash towel into the bath water and definitely do not swim inside it. A lot of Japanese people visit Hakone for a day trip and book their private bath at this place too. They believe that onsen can helps them stay healthy and disease-free. A trip to Hakone Yumoto station from Shinjuku Station only takes 85 minutes using the Odakyu Romancecar train. From there, a free shuttle bus will be available every 10-15 minutes to pick up guests to the onsen. With the private bath, Hakone Yuryo will provide you with towels and kimonos. There will be water bottles and cold green tea available in the fridge for guests to drink. After you drink, don't forget to fill out a slip of paper depicting how many bottles that you take. We tried the free spicy shiitake mushroom that was provided for guests, it was really delicious! The mushroom can also be bought from the shop area located just across the front desk along with other souvenirs. Similar to sauna, drinking water 15 minutes before hot spring is really recommended to improve your blood circulation.

Yelp
My husband and I wanted to share the onsen experience, so we opted for this easy onsen in Hakone, which offers 3 sets of private room types. We got Type 1 (smallest private room for 3900¥ per hour), and it was great. It was outdoors with a private room, which included seating for two, a sink, and mirror. You still bathe before, but in privacy, I suppose you miss a bit from a full authentic experience (e.g., single sex, putting your towel on your head, etc.). Nonetheless, we enjoyed the experience. There were tourists and some locals. There's a free 2-minute bus that'll take you to onsen from Hakone-Yumoto station, which run every 15 minutes. It was so convenient. Only down one star because we could totally hear our neighbors in the private room next door, but we didn't understand their conversation because it was in Japanese, so we didn't focus on it too much.

Yelp
We rented an outdoor private bath here. We're very happy with the prompt and courteous service. The onsen is very nice and clean with a relaxing atmosphere. The rental price is very reasonable too. We surely come back here for a quick, nice and affordable onsen

Yelp
Gorgeous. This place is beautiful and relaxing. My boyfriend and I booked a private onsen for an hour yesterday and our bodies are so relaxed now. If you get the Hakone Free Pass, make sure to show it for a discount! The private onsen had everything, hair dryer, shampoo, conditioner...everything. An hour was perfect for us as we enjoyed the view and sounds of Hakone. They even gave us free sakura red bean desserts to enjoy! They have a free shuttle right downstairs from Hakone Yumoto station, so convenient. It also takes you back to the station after. The staff here is very lovely and the overall experience was everything and more!

Yelp
This is the perfect spot if you don't want to venture too far out from Tokyo for an onsen experience. This was about an hour commute, plus the bus from the train straight to the onsen. It's close enough yet secluded enough that it still feels peaceful and quiet. We did the massage at the spa which was excellent, and the public onsen as well as the private onsen. The private room is worth if you want some privacy with your significant other but otherwise may not be worth paying extra especially if you're just here for the day. In addition to all the things you would expect from a sauna/hot spring room/jjimjilbang, I felt that this one was especially clean (I noticed someone is there constantly cleaning the premises, even though it wasn't even that busy) and I loved the fact that part of it is outside. (there is an indoor hot tub area too) The day we went it was raining so to hear the pitter-patter outside with the cool mountain breeze with the warm water was perfection. This was one of my favorite experiences in Japan, I would highly recommend it for anyone looking for a hot spring experience!

Yelp
A perfect getaway trip from busy Tokyo city. we bought a day pass transportation from Tokyo(Shinjuku) to Hakone..and we were able to squeeze an hour to enjoy private onsen at this place. They offer shared onsen for female vs male. but we decided to rent one hour of private onsen for two of us. The onsen is perfect for two people. and we went there during the winter which was perfect to enjoy our onsen during a cold winter in Japan. They gave you a key to your private onsen 5 minutes prior to your appointment. They also have a dry sitting area if you want to change or anything. you can take a shower right the onsen they have shampoo/conditioner/body wash.. I would recommend you to make an appointment for private room. It is 4,000 Yen for two people for one hour. We got the Hakone transportation day pass which we were able to get 300 yen deducted which comes out to be 3,700 which is well worth it. because they rent towel to you. if you choose the share onsen you have to BUY their towel which comes out to be about the same for total of two people if you were to choose to day the separate gender onsen.. the reason why i gave 4 stars instead of 5 stars b/c i wish there was a view from our private onsen..but there wasn't.. But i would still come back if i come again..and they offer complimentary direct shuttle from Hakone Yumoto station to Hakone Yuryo

Yelp
I came here for the $50 private onsen with my wife. You get a small private room, showering area, and small semi-outdoor onsen. I like the rustic atmosphere of the room & onsen. The 1-hour time limit was more than enough for us to enjoy the relaxing soak. The temperature is moderately hot, and we didn't have trouble soaking for over 10 minutes at a time. We came during late summer, so it was comfortably warm outside even when not soaking. The view of the outdoors was a bit disappointing. You see a forest of trees and a fence in a distance that's blocking the view to the nearest road. It's quite plain. What I did really like was the beautiful 5 minute forestry walk from the Tonosawa station. It was slightly scary though due to the gigantic spiders floating midair on webs. A unique experience for me.

Yelp
I hired a type 3 private Onsen for one hour and it was an amazing and really relaxing experience. Was given keys to a private room to change, sit, relax and private shower area to wash before enjoying the private onsen. The temperature was above 40 degrees and the water heated by the hot springs. Reception staff were great and friendly. I really enjoyed and highly recommend this place.

Yelp
Such a beautiful and relaxing hotspring in Hakone. The hotspring is very easy to get to where they provide a free shuttle service from the hakone-yumoto station and back. We booked the private onsen in advance and it was very scenic. As soon you walk in the room there is a small resting area where you can change and snack on the crackers and drinks. And past the sliding doors is your onsen with showers on the side and a table and chair for you to rest outside as well. The onsen we booked was the type 2 room and it was quite spacious! And looking out of the onsen is the outdoor woods. It is absolutely beautiful and even more relaxing having the outdoor view just there as you dip into the onsen. The private onsens are booked by the hour and an hour was more than enough for us. They also have a restaurant there where you can dine before or after your hotspring. We ate before our hotspring because we were starving by the time we arrived and the katsu there are amazing! Super crispy! But if you have more time they are actually known for their grill! An absolutely perfect place to go that is a quick train ride away from Tokyo to escape from the busy city!

Yelp
Amazing onsen in Hakone with a complimentary shuttle to/from the onsen to a major train station, so it's super accessible. They also have private onsens available especially if you want to enjoy the onsen experience with family or people or opposite genders, since the public ones are separate. For reservations, we booked ours the day of and there were still spots available, but I'd recommend booking far more in advance. We also asked hotel staff to call and book for us in Japanese, and Yuryo staff were all very accommodating. Although we arrived on site a bit early, the staff were all super friendly and very pleasant and we could start our private onsen session earlier. There's a shower / bathing area for you to shower before and after the onsen experience as well as basic toiletries, a hair dryer, and some snacks. The cost is quite pricey, but for an onsen experience I'd say it's well worth it - very relaxing, so soothing, and a must-try. After the onsen you can also walk around the gift shop or grab a bite to eat at their food stand.

Yelp
After reading on the internet that renting a private onsen with tattoos was allowed, we went on a day trip from tokyo just to try it. At the door, after one look at my husband (who has 2 small tattoos on his arms) she turned us around and said that tattoos were dirty according to japanese culture. We brought sleeves to hide them in case they asked to, but she said that she would not allow him to step foot in the facility. She was rude and judgmental and not very polite at all. I understand the culture, I just dont understand the reaction and the service. If this is how they treat people, you should not go there.

Yelp
Honestly getting to Hakone from Tokyo was a bit stressful, since I made a reservation for a private hot springs room, and we had to try and make that time (about noon)... BUT the hour long bath sesh definitely made up for it. You can make reservations using email I guess, since that's what I did to avoid calling them on my US number and avoid time difference problems lol. I specifically asked for the Botan room (or several other types of rooms if that wasn't available), and I got it! Check out their website for more info. It was so pretty!!!! I don't feel that comfortable being totes nudes in front of other women, even if they think it's like nbd. Plus I have a tattoo, and small as it is, they don't allow tattooed up people in there. So I just went with the private room. Plus I was with the bf, and we would have to be separated otherwise. I mean, no big deal, but it's really up to you how you wanna bathe lol. So you're supposed to bathe first before you bathe..... Hah. Like, actually wash and clean yourself before you get into the hot spring tub. But it was kinda nice taking a bath/shower in the provided room. I felt clean and super relaxed the whole time. The hot springs itself... is HOT. For reals. You shouldn't stay in there too long, at least not consecutively. I took breaks in between and it was perfect. SOOOO relaxing I swear. An hour seemed plenty for me, I don't usually bathe for much longer than that. Afterwards I just wanted to sit around and feel gooood. Haha we got a soft serve at their lil cafe, which was mmmmm so good. I wanted to eat at their restaurant but the bf wasn't feelin it. Bastard. But no matter, we just ate at a random restaurant back near Hakone Yumoto station. Overall, I would definitely suggest bathing at a hot spring in the area!! I know Hakone Yuryo is only one of many hot springs facility, but I definitely loved it there. It's also good cos we went before our last day in Japan. After all the traveling and activities, you need some relaxing time!

Yelp
We visited this onsen on our trip to Hakone. I really like that they have a community bath as well as private rooms if you want your privacy. There is also a restaurant that you can grab a bite either before or after your bath. Our private bath was outdoors immersed in tall trees. The room is also stocked with towels, robes, snacks, and a vanity. The only reason why I'm leaving 3 stars instead of 5 because there were multiple families there with children who were loud so it was a little harder to relax.

Yelp
Beautiful onsen in Hakone. Like other onsen, you cannot come here if you have tattoos. The facilities were beautiful and the prices reasonable. It was so nice to be up in the canopy. This was a very relaxing place. Very easy to get to with a shuttle bus from the train station.
