We stayed at the Hale Koa in July 2025 and had an amazing experience. The staff was friendly, the property was spotless, and the location is unbeatable. It’s such a great benefit to have a beautiful, affordable resort for military members, veterans, and their families. The only drawback was the updated pool policy, only registered guests can use the pools, even if someone is eligible to stay at the hotel but just wants to visit for the day. Back when I lived on the island from 2014–2017, this wasn’t the case, and it made it easier for the military community to connect. Since the hotel books up far in advance (we booked a year out), it’s clearly not a business issue. I think offering a day-use option for eligible patrons would be a win-win: it would restore that sense of community and also promote the hotel, as guests’ visitors could experience the resort and be more likely to book in the future. Overall, our stay was wonderful, and I’ll gladly book again, I just hope they reconsider the pool policy.

I am not sure how people could not be happy with this hotel?? Hale Koa has amazing foliage, green space with beautiful trees (because of Ft Derussey park attached), 2 pools (1 large for families and 1 for adults only), an amazing staff, and epic views of the pacific ocean. The beach rentals were only $35 for 4 hours with 2 chairs and an umbrella because they have a contract with the hotel. We stayed in the Maile Tower with a partial ocean view on the 10th floor. We could see the mountains behind us coming out if the clouds every morning and the ocean in front of us with all its beautiful blues all day. Bibas was ok but our server wasn't very friendly ( he was the only one we encountered in our 10 days). The pool bar made great drinks and some great alcohol free frozen coladas for the kids. The Exchange on site is truly a gem in this hotel! From sandwiches to ice cream they had it. Clothes, which we bought some, jewelry, souvenirs, Hawaiian coffee and chocolate and so much more for a lot less than buying from anywhere else. |Our room looked to be a little outdated but I have seen worse from more expensive hotels and yes it had carpet but my kids liked that because they were walking around on beach and concrete at the pool. |We loved it here and are already planning our next trip!!!

This is one of the best island experiences I have ever had! Beautiful location, great beach access, above and beyond great service from the staff. Our room attendant, Vilma, was so kind and friendly. Great dining options. Perfectly done in every way.

Google
A rare perfect score from me. Clean and well designed rooms, balconies all angled so they virtually all get an ocean view (there are a few exceptions), excellent landscaping that catches a lot of the island feel, decent restaurants, a luau on site and even craft vendors on site two days a week (great gift opportunities). A PX on site for some shopping needs. And based on how drunk i was last night, the drinks are not watered down!

We had a great stay here after they finished their pool renovation. The pool is amazing now, especially their kid section which has a fun splash playground area and a wading pool for little ones. Their rates are super affordable especially when compared to other Waikiki hotels. It does get kind of loud with construction noise and traffic/car noise waking us up despite staying on the 11th floor. It seems like there is not a lot of sound proofing so you'll definitely want to bring some earplugs to ensure you get a good night's sleep.

Google
Such a beautiful hotel, staff was attentive and nice, and all rooms and spaces extremely clean. The luau was a wonderful experience. Cannot recommend Hale Koa enough for military and government families. Barefoot bar has great music most nights, easy walk to beach and pool space is accessible. Hotel also has a great gym. Made our first trip to Hawaii extremely memorable.

We had a WONDERFUL two week stay at the Hale Koa. So many positives it’s hard to list them all. -70+ acre property surrounded by mature plants and trees gives it a very private feel. -rooms were updated, great AC, plenty on TV and your devices can easily connect, shower had great pressure, Hawaiian Tropic products gave it that island vibe. -maids cleaned daily and were extremely friendly. -all staff were friendly and polite -all the food we ate was great and a fantastic price. -small PX on site for items you may not have packed (plus alcohol) -Barefoot Bar- live music every night and cheap, well made drinks. We always had a nice place to sit. -access to the beach directly from the hotel We highly recommended it for anyone able to stay here (active duty, retired, vets, etc.).

Google
Hale Koa was simply fantastic. Was there for a friend's cousin's wedding, the atmosphere around the entire Hotel grounds is wonderful. The buildings are most certainly older, and this initially dashed my expectations. That was unfounded. The rooms were fantastic, they weren't exactly renovated yesterday, but they were by no means dated. The hospitality was fantastic. The grounds of the hotel leading back to the beach were simply fantastic, The Exchange is wonderful with extraordinarily Fair prices. Pool was great, Barefoot Bar took way too much money from me (yet we're still the best value around) Was a great experience, wish I could book again, but I am unfortunately not military.

Yelp
2022: Hale Koa's Marquis . . . Waaaah~So many places I have visited and forgot writing a review!!!! Oooof~I didn't stay at Hale Koa; however, when visiting Oahu, I always decide whether eating breakfast, lunch or dinner, i.e., the food served is reminiscent to the USAF's Chow Hall "Fine Dining" Cuisine~lol. Nothing fantabulous such as inhaling at a Michelin Star Restaurant, not tropical chic like Dukes Waikiki, nothing like inhaling at Ruth and Chris, and definitely not inhaling seafood at Foodland's Poke Bar--lol. So, what type of food is served at Hale Koa, eh? Please don't inquire--it's typical food found BELOW Mimi's Cafe, Black Bear Restaurant but, a cut above IHOP~capische?

Yelp
What a beautiful and amazing hotel! We were able to check in a bit early and settle into our room because it was ready early which was super nice after a morning of traveling. There are two towers, so make sure you ask which one you're in since the elevators are in different spots for each one. There is a tour table near the lobby so you can schedule trips and during the day they have vendors in the lobby as well. On the ground floor, you'll find a PX with Hawaiian print clothing of all types, souvenirs, drinks, snacks, stuff for the pool and beach, and more! There is also a decent restaurant there as well. If you walk out towards the beach you'll find the pools, another place to eat, the beer garden and the Luau Garden. The location for this hotel is pretty nice and once you walk down the stairs and thru the park you're on Kalakaua Avenue for shopping! Not a bad walk to the International Market Place or Royal Hawaiian Center. The rooms are pretty nice and spacious. I've stayed in both towers and in one tower you get a bottle of shampoo and body wash (no conditioner) and in the other tower you get a little bottle of shampoo/conditioner in one, body wash and a soap bar. Just a heads up for that one. The balcony is super nice and beautiful. We got a partial beach view and it was breathtaking!

Yelp
Lush, tropical grounds and great pools! First stay was with family for 7 nites. It's semi exclusive, someone must be military or have access allowing them to stay here. Price is very reasonable for such a lovely resort, around $300 a night. Location is great too, with direct beach access and next to Hilton Hawaiian Village. We walked along the beach adjacent sidewalk to get to nearby resorts and other Waikiki restaurants and bars. Our balcony room had an ocean view, which was appreciated daily. The room was fine, it had a decent sized fridge. Our bathroom had a separate sink area which is helpful when sharing a room. My favorites here include the store, which had great variety. You can get all your snacks, bevvies & souvenirs here. Great selection of alcohol, and very convenient to get coffee too. I really enjoyed the pools and hot tubs, and we rented a cabana twice for around $50 for 3 hours. There's an adults only infinity pool above the main pool, and a separate adults only pool without the ocean view. The lobby is open air, there's no door to access this area. One outdoor bar had live music which we listened to one evening. Drink prices are cheaper if staying at the resort or you have military ID. Restaurants and bars are open to anyone, and the resort doesn't restrict access to those areas. There's a beachside bar in front of the park adjacent to the resort that's pretty cool. It's not obvious that it's a Hale Koa bar, and you have to show your hotel card to get the discounted drink prices. I was told the burger at the restaurant was outstanding by a family member. We had dinner once at the restaurant, and the food was pretty good. We're already planning a return trip.

Yelp
Hale Koa is an excellent hotel. It's staff and amenities are always perfect and well presented every time i stay here. The grounds and gardens are some of the best on the island, putting The Hilton to shame. Just overall a really stunning and pleasant hotel to honor those who have served the USA.

Yelp
Nice hotel with lots of benefits and options for military. The hotel is really pretty and has lots of amenities, events and Luau! They also have a Navy exchange store on their premises. There are two pools one for families and the other adults only. Ocean front! And has a restaurant

Yelp
The 4th time is the Charm. Once again the service from the bellhops to the check in counter to the beach AND the Ice Cream station were on point. Our stay has been quite enjoyable.

Yelp
If you're currently serving in the armed forces or you're retired then more than likely you know about the Hale Koa hotel. Yes it's exclusively for military, past and present. Yes, they have different prices for different ranks. Yes, it's located in Waikiki but if you're looking to experience some Aloha on the main island, make a reservation here. The staff is truly amazing. They are all very friendly and very polite. The rooms are normal hotel rooms. They come with a coffee maker, small dorm style refrigerator, TV and small desk. The lanai's are big enough for two chairs and a small table, perfect for that morning coffee with your loved one next to you. The resorts gardens are the best. They are well manicured and very lush. Did I mention they have lots of open space's for the kids to play? Plus they have picnic tables and even some bbq pits. Also right next door is the military museum. The pools are great. They have two, one for adults only, the other for everyone. The pool times are limited, longer on weekends. Restaurants on property are all decent, we generally prefer eating off property but will usually eat on property once or twice during our stay. Did I mention they have the best luau on the island? Yes, it's specifically themed towards military families and veterans and it's hosted by Glenn Medeiros! House cleaning staff are very nice and will provide extra towels, we need them because I have three ladies with long hair! We always enjoy our stay here and make reservations for the following year before we leave. I tell people it's the best resort in Waikiki. No, it's not the fanciest or most modern but for the price and amenities I really don't think you can do better. No sales tax, no resort fees, parking fees are only $22 a night, compared to over $75 next door at the Hilton! Hale Koa is our favorite place to stay in Oahu. Great for families and couples. If you're military or retired military come experience the Aloha at the Hale Koa.

Yelp
Wow! This is a great place to stay if you are fortunate enough. It is for military families. It is perfectly located. Great gym. Great restaurant for breakfast. The buffet is amazing. Super nice people all over the hotel. Laundry service on every floor. Beautiful grounds! Live music! Pretty white beach! Epic trip! Oh, and best luau in Hawaii! Just go! Trust me!

Yelp
My husband is military retired with 30 years of service. Active duty and retired military exclusively may stay here. The rooms are spacious and clean. Our room had two queen beds and no kitchen but a comfortable couch and chair. The Ft Derussey grounds are a 40 plus acre wooded wonderland with multiple venues for dining, recreation such as beach volleyball, a family pool and hot tub and an adult only pool and hot tub. We loved the adult pool. It was shaded most of the day which appreciated. The bars and snack facilities were very reasonable and served amazing food and drink. Bibi's restaurant had a limited menu but really outstanding food. It was, like many island venues more expensive but within reason for the area. We fell in love with this hotel and will definitely return. Parking can be had a block away for $20 per day or $199 per month, an option we used because our stay between the Hale Kia and the Ilikai totaled two weeks so we saved with a monthly rate even leaving two weeks early. A luau is presented several nights per week. The beach is fantastic. Beds and pillows are super comfortable.

Yelp
We had a wonderful stay at the Hale Koa, house of the warrior. This place is very impressive and quite large and very open. The rooms were clean and well kept up, housekeeping was wonderful and came daily. Our room had a resort balcony, we did not spend much time on but was nice in the evenings. Our first full day here the plumbing (toilets, showers, sinks, all running water) was not working. It was a hotel wide issue. We were gone most of the day and the issue was fixed by the end of the day. Staff here was friendly. They have covered parking in a garage across the street which is $20/day. The grounds of the hotel were gorgeous and very well kept up and right on the water. They had an adults only infinity pool above the family pool, hot tub, a kids waterpark and an additional adults only pool. The pools were lovely but our biggest complaint is Sunday-Thursday these pools close daily at 5pm. By the time we made it back to the hotel after exploring the pool was closed. Fridays and Saturdays the family pool and adult only infinity pool stays open until 8pm and even then is still on the earlier side. We got to spend a total of 2 hrs in the pool just on Friday evening, we watched the sunset from pool which was lovely. That was our biggest complaint. The lifeguards were on top of it. They identified unaccompanied children who made their way into the hot tub and found their parents. This hotel also has an outdoor bar/restaurant, open to the public but they have military discounts. We booked a luau here too since they had a military discount as well making the cost of admission super affordable. The luau was wonderful and super entertaining, we felt we truly lucked out here and with the luau.

Yelp
Hale Koa is a Military Resorts and serve members of the U.S. Armed Forces, their families and other authorized users. You will need to have certain eligibility and criteria to stay at this hotel. Beautiful resort for service members and families. At unbeatable rates and amazing hospitality and amenities. We felt like elites at this resort. Check in is a longer process as they do need to verify eligibility etc. you will also receive guest passes for family members, maps and event schedule etc. Note: you can use your Military Star Card for room charges etc. if you forget your card they are able to print a temporary card at the exchange downstairs. Parking for loading and unloading is very convenient as parking garage is across the street and is a little ways out. Parking is $20 a day and will be charged when room keys are activated. Rooms are spacious and perfect for families. Room rates are based on military rank and also on room view. They offer standard room, partial ocean view and ocean view. Rooms are so clean! Katherine did our cleaning during our 6 day stay. She was the sweetest, cleaned our room everyday and switched out our towels each day and mopped our floors. Large balcony perfect for catching sunrise and a hot coffee. Pools are beautiful and that's an understatement! They have a beautiful adult only pool that is ahhh... the infirmity pool is also for adults only. We spent our days at the pool and they were so relaxing. They also have a huge pool for kids that include water slides. All pools only steps away from the beach. Doesn't get better! They have Luau available and a magic show in the evenings. We attended the magic show which was very cool and entertaining. We like they had open bar and table service. Luau looked very cool but we did not attend as we had plans for Paradise Cove Luau. Restaurants are very convenient and yummy! They have many food options from fast food to sit down restaurants and a coffee shop. Make sure to do reservation for dinner! They have numerous Bars available for drinks, our favorite! We loved our random Mai Tai drinks throughout the day and night. They have real good drinks so tropical and delicious! Bell desk staff, amazing!! If your room isn't ready at check in they will hold your stuff. They are life savers! Spa is available too for your massage needs! Thank you Hale Koa for the amazing stay! This is amazing for Military families. Service members will feel so appreciated with their hospitality. We can't wait to be back within the next couple months.

Yelp
Where do I start my review? Check-in was quick, and Russell was personable and efficient. We also checked-in a sponsored couple a few days later. Again, Russell was great, working through to consolidate their reservation dates in a room close to us in Ilima tower. Happy's is the go to for dinner specials. We particularly like the Kahlua pork and cabbage on Saturdays and the honey butter salmon on Thursdays. Menu changes a couple of the daily items each month. Portions are large and roasted potatoes addictive. Barefoot bar Mai Tais are as good as any on Waikiki with a military price of $10.60 (along with many other cocktails). I believe civilians pay 20% more. PX on site is big enough for clothing, jewelry and a fair amount of food items. Rooms are comparable to Hyatt/Hilton and grounds are incredible.

Yelp
This was my first experience staying at a military hotel and it was different! I was all over this place and have things to say in several categories! One of the best things about this place was the maid service-- everyone who tended to our room was efficient, quick and so friendly! They mopped our floors regularly and actually were changing sheets every day which I appreciated. The access to the beach is also great, the hotel is a few steps away from clear waters and water sport activity rental areas! They do have several facilities such as a gym, a BX convenience-like store and a small coffee shop. The gym was well kept and the restrooms were nice, the BX had high prices and were unfortunately out of feminine products when I visited. Also be aware that you need your sponsor to buy alcohol here with THEIR form of payment if you are not the military personnel. The coffee bar serves Starbucks... but isn't a Starbucks so they don't accept their gift cards or app usage. The latte I had made was good though. The family pool was nice-- we spent at least 9 out of 15 days there in our stay. Some days they gave out towels freely, other days you could only have any many as there were people in your party. Kids under a certain height have to wear a life vest and have an adult within arms reach the whole time and at the top of every hour, all kids are kicked out of the pool for 15 mins to allow for adult only swim. Like others mentioned, when you have a whole separate adult pool AND an adult-only infinity pool in the family area that overlooks the whole area... this rule seems weird. For us, having a toddler who loved the baby pool, the 15 min rule meant that the baby pool was overrun with larger kids who could swim and splashed way too much around small kids. The water in the baby pool was also significantly warmer which.. not sure I want to think about why, but my son enjoyed it because the big pool was always freezing for him. Sometimes the lifeguards were nice and other times they were rude. There's also two slides which you have to be tall enough to ride or pass a swim test... they seemed to move very slowly and I thought it was weird that the lifeguards never once told people not to run up the slippery stairs. It was an interesting pool setup. Another shortcoming for me was the food at Hale Koa.... We tried Bibas (huge disappointment)... my son tried 2 out of the 4 kids menu items and didn't finish either time. His chicken tenders were hard beyond belief and the spaghetti tasted like cardboard. My Alfredo shrimp pasta was fine, but I had to share more of it as neither my son or husband was satisfied with their meals. We also had the brunch buffet at Koko and it was fine. The omelette dude was great, and everything else was pretty standard. Nothing amazing. The elevators and laundry rooms were always broken or breaking during our almost 2 week stay. The elevator to the pool went down at least 4 times and I literally tried to do laundry on 6 out of 12 (or 13h floors and ALL THE DRYERS WERE BROKEN!!! When you're swimming that much, you want to wash and that was nearly impossible without hanging your clothes to dry on the patio. The last negative for me was the dryness in this hotel. The first 5-6 nights my husband and I woke up having coughing fits because it was so dry. We ended up sleeping with the patio door open which was a bit unsettling as our room was in the second floor and right by a fire escape where people could roam freely ... it had to be done though to breathe here. The luau was fun-- they take you on a journey with several Polynesian cultures through song and dance and serve a great 3 course meal. I didn't expect there to be activities stations before the luau began (leaf head piece braiding, ukulele lessons, lei bracelet making, a tree climbing show etc). My son had so much fun and all the performers were great! The food was delicious here. We were here during NYE and Christmas so we saw fun decor, fireworks and live performances at the Barefoot bar. All in all... the views of this place were nice there were good things and bad... I think I'd rather experience somewhere else next time.

Yelp
This hotel is beautiful and such a nice resort for military families. Our AC sadly went out and with a one year old, 86 was too hot for her so we reached out to Hale Koa and they were able to find us a room last minute! It was $165 for the night which is a steal for a hotel in Waikiki. The pool was nice, staff was super friendly, and most importantly our daughter had a blast. Our room was also impeccably clean. Not a single stain/ bug/ anything anywhere in the room. I think my only complaint is the lack of shade at the pools, we spent $75 on a cabana just so we could have that luxury and I think it was also worth the price. We got to use it from 11:30-5. Also, if your little one weighs less than 30lbs, I'd bring your own life jacket. They only had 30-50lbs as the smallest. We will for sure be staycationing here again.

Bill R.

Yelp
I will no longer attend any functions that are in a Hale Koa Ballroom. We complained several times that the room was hot and we're sweating but the staff did nothing, nor did they seem to care. Items ran out on the Buffet line and they took forever to replace it. They took the Buffet items off of the buffet line to early and stopped water, coffee and tea service to early. Also the hotel restaurant prime rib buffet is way overpriced. For a few dollars more you can eat a prime rib and seafood buffet at another hotel.

Yelp
Disappointed that we are staying at this hotel and washers and dryers do not work. For the money we paid, washers and dryers should be working at all times. We had to go find a laundry mat to wash our clothes. Unacceptable. We will not stay here again!

Yelp
Hale Kia Hotel is the military's resort hotel for rest and relaxation located on the Waikiki Beaches of Oahu, Hawaii. The huge resort boasts a huge facility to include a private beach, Oceanside pols and spas, bars, restaurants, and many more. Reasonable prices with discounts for active and retired military personnel.

Yelp
Wow! I could write volumes on the good things we experienced at Hale Koa. First, you can't beat the price. It's like paying half-price for similar accommodations. We had a room on the 13th floor, looking eastward and with a view of the beach. It was a beautiful way to wake up. The room was kept very clean and we definitely like that there was no carpet. Everything was well kept. The staff is very attentive and nice. With your military ID, you wouldn't need to leave the grounds if you didn't want to. There's a PX onsite and the beach is just crossing the walkway that spans most of the beach. Drinks are discounted for military at the bars. The Luau was great, especially for the price. The best part of the resort are the "comfy couches" inside the snack area, facing the beach and sunset. The only "mediocre" thing is the food. All the food onsite isn't great, but it is edible. And the price was about the same anywhere else. There were better places to walk to, and you can walk every where in Waikiki. We are definitely going back to Hale Koa.

Christy M.

Yelp
Beautiful resort, But why the Early pool hours? Especially the adults pool/ hot tub. Should be at least 10 PM . After all your on vacation!

Yelp
Nice military hotel, but their Tiki bar "The barefoot bar" in front of the hotel is awesome! Tiki bar themed with ocean views, walk up or table orders and a variety of delicious cocktails. Military discount but civilians get great rates on the beer and cocktails too! Best prices in Waikiki! Delicious Mai tai's and cocktails overlooking the ocean and live music too!

Yelp
Shoutout to the Hale Koa Hotel Background: The Hale Koa hotel is an Armed Forces Recreation Center resort 5-star hotel located on Waikiki Beach and owned by the United States Department of Defense. It's a 72-acre parcel of land, and has 818 rooms. It boasts a gorgeous beachfront location, so you can walk from your room to the sand in just a few minutes. Pricing is based on your military rank. Our Stay: We spent six nights in an ocean view room. Because it is a military resort, there are no resort fees, no sales tax, no tourist fees and no city tax fees. The room rates for this 5-Star resort are about one fifth of they are charging right next door at the Hilton Resort. ($289. a night Vs. $1440. a night for an ocean front room at the Hilton Resort). The resort has a tax-free exchange to purchase food, clothing, jewelry, liquor and gifts. The 72 acres are filled with trees, flowers and the grounds are kept in immaculate condition by a large staff of groundskeepers. Red headed cardinal birds keep you company while you sip your morning (onsite Starbucks) coffee. The main pool includes two water slides, a kids' play area, spa and other family-friendly features. Adults 18 years old and older can relax in the adult only infinity pool. The onsite gym has a spacious locker room, sauna and is filled with numerous state of the art machines. When you walk around the facility, it's quiet, low key and you are treated like family by both the staff and other guests. When we attended the Luau, Vietnam veterans were asked to stand for recognition. I was one of three that stood up. After the Luau was over and we were standing just outside the Luau grounds, five active service members came up to me thanked me for my service and shook my hand. That's the kind of camaraderie that was present the entire time of our stay at this resort.

Yelp
Always the best service here!! The parking lot is across the street. They do not have valet- but you can be dropped off at the lobby. My husband & son always do this for us girls. They have a great breakfast buffet at Kokos. Dinner at Bibas. Snack area at Happys. And a little shop with snacks, clothing, swimwear, liquor, and some forgotten toiletries can be obtained here. The fireworks on Fridays at 8pm that the Hilton puts on is a great view from the Hale Koa green grassy area or the beach right off the property. The pool is outstanding and remodeled for adults (serenity pool), kids play area, slides for all, and swimming area for families. They also have a separate adult pool for just adults. They offer cabanas as well!! We are thankful for being able to use the services here and loooove this hotel!!

Yelp
A unique hotel designed specifically for active and retired military families. I was fortunate to be a guest in the family due to a retired service member and felt really proud to be able to share the space at Hale Koa. It is here that I learned about the PX (post exchange) which is a little store where you can buy toiletries, snacks, snorkeling products, souvenirs and more for a discounted price as well as have the opportunity to attend a luau with a ticket purchase. This hotel has many amenities including various snack bars, laundry machines on every floor, room mini fridges, two restaurants, garden tours, lobby craft shows, coffee shops, inside gym, and pool spaces. Everything is walking distance making it an enjoyable experience to spend a couple of days onsite as opposed to running all over the island. Located just steps away from the beach, there are many local shops, other hotels, food trucks, pickle ball courts and volleyball at your fingertips. In terms of rooms, there are full beach balcony and partial view balconies. It's a great space to enjoy morning coffee on, read a book or simply soak in the views. We were very lucky to be able to sleep with our patio door open every single night due to great weather. A special shout out to the hotel cleaning crew who always made our beds and tidied up the room which was a relaxing way to re-enter the space after a full day. TIP: use the gym water station to fill water bottles up for your excursions. It is the best water I have ever tasted! While I wish I could give this a full 5-star experience, I have to knock two specific areas which were the elevators and restaurants. The elevator was always broken and at one point never traveled to my floor due to a service glitch that was later fixed. Many times, the elevator would break down or skip floors. Additionally, the interior restaurants were mediocre at best and therefore, I would highly recommend grabbing food off property.

Yelp
Celebrating our 40th years anniversary at this hotel it has been great. Been here for two weeks. We go home on Tuesday. We will miss it, but we will be back in a year or two. Great hotel and grounds. Aloha

Yelp
What are the best places to stay when you're in Honolulu. If you're in the military or associate with a military member, you can stay at this hotel and you will get one of the best experiences you've ever had. From the quality of service you get from check in through service at the restaurants poolside at the beach. It is all phenomenal. The property is stunning right by the beach. I mean on the beach I should say and actually just a short walk from where they filmed Hawaii Five-0. Prices are phenomenal room service is spectacular. The view from the rooms is amazing. I love staying here every time I go to Honolulu.

Yelp
We ate dinner here one night during our visit to Hawaii, it was rushed, food wasn't that great but the pineapple was delicious! Beach with fireworks was the best and a sea turtle swam up while we were swimming waiting on fireworks to start!!

Yelp
Incredible hotel right on the beach. Highly recommend for staying in Waikiki Honolulu. Beautiful lobby area, tons of stores, breakfast was decently priced and access to the beach with a short walk. Water aquatic center was amazing just closes a little bit too early and the beachfront is also beautiful. Check in was A little slow by the staff members and the elevators sometimes are not working the best laundry and vending machines on each hall and the staff members who come to clean are very friendly. Parking is across the street for $16 a day average price per night was $220

Yelp
My sis & I were in paradise when we stepped off the plane, her first visit! Then the pick up van we ordered was there, we arrived at Hale Koa (Home of the Warrior) & my eyes lit up by the manicured beauty of the whole place! We were greeted with kindness & check in was effortless, we were treated as valued guests the moment we stepped foot on this property. I've been to Hawaii many times this was my first stary at Hale Koa, every thing was perfect for us there! The beauty is remarkable, the shops & local vendors that set up on certain days in the lobby was amazing with a variety of local artist, bakers, etc! This resort exudes top notch service! I'm a USAF Veteran it makes me even more proud to have served my country to be eligible to stay in a safe beautiful oasis as the Hale Koa, I doubt I'll stay any where else in HI There luau, the pools, the food venues, the nightly entertainment, the stores on property were all excellent! When I checked out, I made reservations to return this May with my family! Feeling blessed beyond measure to have this opportunity! If you served in the military, check Hale Koa out!

Yelp
If you are eligible to stay here, you're missing out if you pass it by. Truly a resort and everything you need is right there. Plenty of pools, bars, eating places. There is also an exchange for eligible customers to buy food, souvenirs etc. We had an ocean facing room with balcony. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Pro: A great place for service members and their families to relax and take in some of the famed "Aloha spirit"! It's a cost-effective way to enjoy Honolulu without breaking the bank. With two pools, easy beach access, and close proximity to the activities of Kalakaua Ave., it's a no-brainer for the military community to vacation. Con: I wasn't a fan of my room's refrigerator being placed in the bathroom. Something about keeping my food where I get rid of my food is just a tad weird. Also, plan ahead. I had to book a reservation a year in advance. Bottom Line: If you're able, take the trip for yourself!

Yelp
Great location, awesome amenities, and like-minded people make this a must for military-affiliated persons that want to explore Oahu.

Yelp
My family and I went here for our Easter Brunch. It was an easy check-in for our table, and we were seated in a nice area on the lanai. They had a lot of food options. It was a nice place for a family gathering.

Yelp
Excellent stay. If you are in the military or associated with the federal government, this hotel has a great location, great amenities, and friendly staff. You are walking distance to many restaurants and shopping in Waikiki, and they have a pretty solid luau. The rooms are spacious, clean, and have balconies. The only issue I ran into was they were updating elevators, so wait times were a bit long to get up and down. On a separate note, their is a small PX and a buffet style breakfast that faces the beach. There is also a beach bar right on the beach with plenty of open seating. Overall recommend without reservations and would plan to stay here for my future visits. Disclaimer: My average review score 3.42 when I made this review--(take with a grain of salt) (I rely on Yelp to go to places with good reviews, may account for the higher average)

Yelp
Very nice military hotel in Waikiki. Haven't been here in a long time and everything seemed well maintained. Surprised that it is not crowded. Perhaps, it is not holiday season, yet. Very relaxing just sit in the huge lobby & enjoy the cool breeze. No better way to do R & R.

Yelp
It's a beautiful hotel. The pools are lovely and well maintained. The grounds are also gorgeous. I just have one question: do you all just not like kids? The pool rules are really bizarre. Lifeguards are non stop telling people to stop doing things. Little nothings like tossing a small ball or keeping room between chairs. The killer: at the top of each hour, kids have to get out for 15 minutes. Why? Safety, they say but that doesn't make sense. Plus- you have two adult pools only. Why is this necessary? Also after swimming for a week, a lifeguard pulls my niece out and makes her do a swim test. She felt singled out, embarrassed, and got very upset. She could stand in the freaking pool. And she can totally swim - was swimming all week! She passed, but didn't want to swim the rest of the day. What gives? Why so anti kids. The other hotels are not like this.

Yelp
So with this hotel you must be in the active military or a retired veteran to book. The rooms are fine but no real views from the tower we are staying in. There is an adult pool that closes early (5pm) and a main pool no idea how early it closes. Neither pool had bar servers but the bar is very close to the main pool not the adult pool. WOW. The adult pool is closed off from the beach and relatively small for the number of grown folks that are booked here. Over all it's nice. Has a couple of restaurants and a grill (restaurant). Over all good for the price in Waikiki as far as hotels go. There is a good amount of beachfront that adds to the hotel being good to book.

Yelp
This resort is ABSOLUTELY STUNNING, I loved my stay here and want to return. Firstly it's huge, nice, and very clean. This is a military hotel so the prices for a stay are phenomenal. I am so happy I was able to get reservations. If you're military I strongly recommend you stay here. Staff is extremely helpful and friendly. The resort is centrally located near everything if you wanted to you can walk to downtown only several of blocks. We did the luau which was amazing and a must if you are going to the islands

Yelp
A true military Haven! LOCATION: On Waikiki beach with 60 acres of beach and beachfront living. DECOR: Open lobby all the way through with a beautiful avatar looking tree from the bottom floor to above the roof. Warm, neutral Island colors and lots of plants. Rooms are comprised off early 2000's renovations which is far better than the 1970's look most places have. Truly a place to relax. PRICE: Military pricing dependent on your rank or highest rank achieved when active/reserve. An E can expect to pay around $250 per night. DINING: There are a couple restaurants to note. First up is Koko. It used to be a breakfast buffet style restaurant, but now it's a dine in spot with indoor and balcony seating. And the breakfast is still fire! It's simpler, but filling. The omelette, with bacon on the side, crispy potatoes, some seasonal fruit, French toast and local coffee is perfection! The next place is a restaurant called Bibas. A sit down spot with indoor and outdoor seating. The pork sliders are pretty incredible as well as the fish and chips. Cooked to perfection. Oh, and the fries are so good too. SHOPPING: There is a small exchange about the size of a large convenient store. Mostly full of knick knacks and touristy ish. Some food can be purchased, but you're better off hitting up the restaurants above. On Wednesdays, they have local makers on site selling things like jewelry. STAFF: Kind, helpful, chill and always willing to help. EXPERIENCE: Those off my go to spot when visiting O'ahu. Why stay anywhere else? I won't get that view with this Beach access for these prices ANYWHERE in Waikiki. It's not even a question if will I stay here. The only question I'm concerned with is how long I'm staying there!

Yelp
We had the pleasure of staying at a beautiful ocean view room at the Hale Koa in the last few weeks of May this year. This hotel is open to military families and military sponsored individuals/families. Luckily, my dad, being an Army veteran, we were able to join them at the Hale Koa. The hotel is a very large in property size and is comparable to it's neighboring Hilton Hawaiian Village neighbor next door. It is larger than the Hilton Village and encompasses multiple restaurants, a newly added swimming pool section for children and adults. There is even a "barefoot" bar where cocktails are served and acoustic entertainment provided in the evening. And if you are looking for an "exchange" they do have one onsite to purchase food, clothing, and even Hawaiian high end jewelry just to name a few. Our stay was enjoyable and we were able to stay in a the newest renovated tower. Mini fridges are in room and a lanai to enjoy the ocean was our highlight during our stay. Very worthwhile.

Yelp
The Hale Koa is an absolute gem! Boasting an impeccable location right on the beach, it truly is a haven for those who've served their country. The rates are incredibly reasonable, especially for the range of top-notch amenities offered. For those expecting an ultra-luxurious 5-star experience, you might need to recalibrate your expectations. But for the value, location, and the ethos behind it, Hale Koa is unbeatable. Even more, there is an exchange on the facility. Wow. If you've served our country and want to relish in a well-deserved retreat, this is the place. We're thoroughly enjoying every moment of our stay here! Rating: Price: 5 Location: 5 Ambiance: 3 Food: 3.5 but it's reasonable priced. Service: 4 Overall: 5 Definitely coming back.

Yelp
If you have military credentials, stay here. Hale Koa is located in between Hilton Waikiki and Outrigger Reef Resort - both four star hotels. I've stayed at all three hotels and Hale Koa is hands down the best - best splash pad, pool (separate adult pool area), service, food, rooms, lanai, and sunset views. There's also an exchange downstairs and delicious restaurant buffet (I haven't tried the buffet yet!). My only thing is that there is no valet, so you'd have to park in front to unload your luggage (baggage clerks will assist (so sweet; don't forget to tip!), then you'd have to eventually re-park the car across the street in the shared parking garage ($20 for 24 hours). Stay in the upper levels like 10-11 (ie room 1074 or 1174 corner units) and be sure to ask for the wrap around lanai to get the full ocean full - you will see amazing sunsets from this view!!! Your very own private sunset watch - absolutely stunning views.

Yelp
This place is GORGEOUS! Our views were breathtaking! Pros: Price- I don't think the other resorts compare to the price we paid for one night in an ocean view room. If you do choose to eat at the on site restaurants, they get pricey. Location- It is right downtown Honolulu in a safe place. Everything is within walking distance. Pools- The most family friendly swimming area that we've ever been to. They literally thought of everything. The little 1 1/2 foot pool was perfect for our 3 year old and my son passed the swim test so he used everything else. Being able to bring food and drinks in allowed us to stay all day. If you are checking out before you are done swimming, you can shower in the locker room in the fitness center. Luau- So much fun! I highly recommend spending the money to go to it! The food was okay but the show was worth it. Parking-$20 for 24 hours. You can leave after you explore the area if you check out early. You just give them your name and room number. Aefes- The Aefes on the bottom floor is super convenient. Buy your drinks there. Cons- The price of the cocktails. My husband paid $20 for his drink. The only negative thing I could think of!

Yelp
Koko at Kalia! They have a super good brunch buffet. My folks and I are all veterans and enjoyed the treat and venue. The guava mimosa snd bread pudding were my faves!

Yelp
Not a family friendly pool at all. Water slides are only for kids 48" tall regardless of if they can swim or not. They kick all the kids out every hour so that adults can swim without kids for 15 minutes even though they have an adults only pool down the way and an adult infinity pool attached. If your kid are on the shorter end, they'll force them to do a ridiculous swim test that most kids can barely do unless they've taken a swim class, otherwise they need to wear a life vest at all times and an adult must be within arms reach. So really. I don't know what the purpose of the life guards really are. Meanwhile, their 3 life guards are sitting talking story with the one who walks back and forth judging which families to harass all day about not being in arms reach of a kid who is wearing a life vest. I watched a lot of families get fed up with their ridiculous rules and leave to head to the beach instead. Based on my experience. The assistant manager, didn't catch his name and don't care to. Bruce Lee wannabe I'll call him; harassed me from the minute I walked in. Told me I've been "non-complaint" the entire morning. I JUST walked in and they knew this. Watched my daughter fail her swim test despite being 5 ft away from the end and still had the audacity to tell me right after it all to put a life vest on her. Absolutely no compassion whatsoever. I bet he had a feel good experience knowing that she "couldn't swim". I hope he sleeps well knowing that he made a little girl feel like a failure. On the other hand, Pono was very nice though so I appreciate his positive attitude despite having to work with such an arrogant assistant manager. He was pushing for her, I think they all were except for this ONE pathetic POS. Also, the pool bar is barely open and the pool closes at 5 despite it being the weekend or a holiday.
