This is a beautiful, peaceful place that lives up to its name. Our room and bathroom are clean and lovely; the common areas are generous and homey. There is a common refrigerator to store our cold foods, and we have full use of the common kitchen as we want/need. We relaxed to sleep with little frogs sounding and woke up to roosters and other little birds. Traffic heavy in the road outside, but with only so many roads up and down on the island, it's expected as folks head to work. So different than Central Virginia right now! It is only 3+ miles down to Kailua. We prefer this serene setting to the hustle and bustle of the town. We'll be back!

Had a beautiful stay with Miriam and Dave. They are lovely hosts and take care of guests like family. The inn is unique, nestled in a lush hillside with lots of beautiful trees and tropical plants surrounding the rooms! You hear the coqui at night and other sounds of the countryside but ear plugs are provided for light sleepers. The common areas are charming, clean, and inviting. We loved drinking coffee on the lanai! Kona coffee and home made goodies, and fresh fruit are provided every morning 🙏Great location to head to beach, hikes, shopping and restaurants (8-10 min drive or so for most things, you'll definitely want a rental car). Great experience for those looking to get off the beaten path and explore a bit more of the countryside 😊! Thank you for a great stay!

I cannot begin to describe how pleasant my experience was staying at Hale Maluhia Country inn. Dave and Miriam are two of the kindest, most faithful, and most welcoming hosts I have come across in my years of traveling. Aside from the property being beautiful, Dave and Miriam ensured my stay was comfortable and pleasant. Coffee was available every morning, the room I stayed in was adorable and clean, and Miriam had treats, fruit, and tea available for guests. The communal kitchen made it fun to talk to other guests and make some meals if you didn’t feel like ordering out. I will highly recommend staying here to anyone who wishes to visit Kona.

Staying at this lovely inn was one of the highlights of our time on the Big Island. You couldn't find a more enchanting setting--a traditional Hawaiian inn in the middle of a tropical forest! You're surrounded by lush greenery, fruit, and all kinds of forest creatures. As the innkeepers have clearly described on their website, the forest is teeming with activity. So, you'll hear animals at all hours of the day; you'll fall asleep to the sounds of cocqui frogs and wild chickens. Geckos and related might creep into your room. For us, all this added to the magic. If you want a more typical hotel experience, then this isn't the best fit for you. If you want to be in nature, do some forest bathing, then Hale Maluhia is a dream come true. Our room, the Pikaki Room, was very comfortable and had everything we needed, including a kitchenette and towels for the beach. We also had our own lanai or porch, which was an excellent spot for bird watching and relaxing between activities. This sweet inn provided a much-needed escape from our busy everyday lives. It allowed us to slow down and observe the world around us. It also was just 10 minutes away from the beach, shopping, and restaurants. Hale Maluhia provides the best value for location and comfort. It also gives a much more authentic vibe than your average hotel chain. We also enjoyed getting to know the sweet innkeepers, Dave and Miriam. They were so warm and welcoming. And they had great tips on where to go, where to eat, etc. They also offer fresh fruit from their property, home-baked goods, and Kona coffee for guests every morning! Truly a memorable and enjoyable experience that went above and beyond expectations. Mahalo, Dave and Miriam!

This place is so magical and means so much to me! My husband and I were 2 nights into a 7 night honeymoon on the big island when we realized the place we had originally booked was untenable (advertised as a “farm retreat” which actually meant totally unsanitary and, frankly, unsafe. I’ll spare you the details.) we were desperate to find better accommodations or end our trip early. This is how we discovered Hale Maluhia. By some miracle, they had a vacancy overlapping with the days we had left on our trip. Dave, one of the lovely innkeepers, answered our call at 6:30 pm and had us all squared away with a room that very same evening. He greeted us in the rain and gave us the warmest welcome and a quick, thoughtful intro to the Bnb and our room. When you pull up to this inn, there is very good, special energy here that greets you right away. It’s incredibly CLEAN, homey, and inviting. Given what we had been through the first two days of our honeymoon, arriving here felt like a warm hug. You are up in the hills in a cozy neighborhood, with beautiful views and nature sounds. It’s a true escape. This place and the inn keepers will always hold a special place for me. Next time we visit this big island, I will book here immediately.

This is a MAGICAL place! Such beautiful, lush gardens and birds surround all the guesthouses! At night, the twinkling lights on the HUGE tree in front, and the sound of frogs is quite beautiful, and IMHO, part of 'the real Hawaii' experience! Hosts Dave and Miriam bent over backwards to make my 3-day stay this November very comfortable! Every AM, you can help yourself to fresh 100% Kona coffee and fresh-baked snacks and fruit. I would like to bring my husband back here with me next time!

My husband and I stayed at the end of January with Dave and Miriam. We typically stray away from BnBs due to our shyness but took the chance here since the photos inspired the lush and remote feel we were looking for. We did not want to stay at a posh resort. I'm happy to say it was an even more pleasant surprise staying with the Cariveaus! We were warmly greeted upon arrival and given a quick tour of the property before they let us settle in. Our five night stay was nothing short of wonderful. Our suite was comfortable and sylish, kona coffee made fresh every morning, breakfast treats and hibiscus tea served and available throughout the day, lush rainforest scenery accompanied by wildlife noises, and all of our personal requests were happily accommodated. The property felt so homey and leisure! I was in luck that their daughter Christina came to visit as she was able to offer massage services during our stay. I booked a 90 min session with her and she worked around my late schedule preferences. Needless to say this experience itself was incredible and I really enjoyed her massage. If she's around definitely ask to book a session!!! We really felt so at home here. Even sitting on the lanai and watching the scenery around us under the trickles of light rain was a treasured moment in itself. Dave and Miriam made sure to be available to exchange goodbyes when we departed. It was like visiting family and we will be sure to come back and finally book the elusive tea room!! Our stay hearts stayed in Kona at this house of peace!!

Yelp
Mahalo to Dave and Miriam at Hale Maluhia for a wonderful stay! My husband and I just spent five relaxing nights there in the Japanese Tea Room, and were so sad when it was time to leave. This inn was perfect for what we wanted: It's unique and somewhat rustic, but very clean and has all the needed "conveniences." It's in a gorgeous setting in the hills, with lots of plants and birds and a sliver of ocean view. It's not in the touristy area of Kona, but you can drive to all that in less than ten minutes. And the price was better than the resort hotels -- plus free parking! (Some of those resorts looked pretty down at the heels, tbh.) When we spoke with our hosts, they were very nice and helpful. But mostly they leave you to your privacy, and don't enter the room during your stay unless you ask them to. If you need fresh towels, you leave the used ones in the provided laundry basket outside your room. The following are things to note, though they were not drawbacks for us: * WiFi can be spotty * The breakfast is fairly minimal, self-serve, and you wash your own dishes (but there are cute coffee shops nearby, and a mini-fridge & microwave in the room if you want to buy food) * Not on the beach & no pool (though they do have a hot tub, and they provide beach towels for your use while there) * The roosters in the neighborhood crow at any hour of the day or night they damn well feel like it :) We loved it, and hope to be back again someday!

Yelp
The owner had bad attitude to solve problems ,mosquitoes in the room ,termite poo everywhere, and the room next to the roadside is super noisy .

Steve T.

Yelp
The new owners are a nice young Christian family who have a family bible study every day for their children. We were warmly greeted when we arrived here. Nice bed and breakfast place on the hill overlooking Kona. Place shows a lot of love and peace here. They own lots of fruit trees for fresh fruit they serve each day for their free breakfast with an omelette bar. Don't expect modern and fancy but vintage and charming and you will be pleased.

Yelp
I absolutely left my heart back at Hale Maluhia Country Inn and with the beautiful family who knows it. I should start by saying that the rooms are all so beautiful and clean! I stayed at the Banyan and the Japanese room. I don't know which one I loved more. Breakfast was my favorite time while staying here. Breakfast is at 8am every morning with an amazing spread of fruits, cheeses, omelets and FRESH BREAD. Yes, Miriam bakes fresh bread every night. I spent about a week here and I didn't want to leave. I only left because I had to - I was ready to move in with them. All their children are amazing and Miriam and Dave go above and beyond for their guests. I know need to go to the Big Island at least once a year just to stay here. It's close to town but just far enough to where you feel like you're in paradise within paradise. Beautiful trees all around and they have a jacuzzi that was so relaxing. Ask Dave for the local tips. He will send you to some awesome places. Also take a moment to chat with Miriam and Dave, they will give you so much love and kind words that it's impossible to have a bad day. Their children are incredible. All so polite and lovely!! I travel a lot for both work and fun and this has been by far the most magical place I've ever stayed.

Yelp
We loved this quirky BNB in the hills overlooking Kona Village. Room was clean and comfortable, the breakfast was amazing. Dave and Miriam are excellent hosts. We found this to be an economical lodging choice in an expensive area.

Vicki F.

Yelp
Amazing BNB! We stayed in the Japanese tea house and it is so cool! The owners are so personable and helpful with places to visit. Homemade incredible breakfast everyday is the best!!!! I would suggest this place to everyone, you will be happy you made the choice to stay here. The surrounding area is a tropical rainforest with the most beautiful views!

Yelp
My wife and I have always stayed oceanfront when vacationing on the different islands of Hawaii. This time we decided to try something different and discovered the "Real Hawaiian Experience" was staying at the Hale Maluhia County Inn on the Big Island. The innkeepers Miriam and Dave provide a sumptuous 5 star breakfast in an idyllic tropical setting and attend to your every needs. Would we stay there again? Absolutely!

Jimi M.

Yelp
Aloha! Hale Maluhia is the place to go for an unforgettable Big Island experience. Located in the lush mountains of Kailua-Kona, you will experience a surreal atmosphere which includes beautiful gecko lizards, an array of colorful birds, and the evening "calling" of the Coqui Frogs - all of this only 10 minutes from beaches, restaurants, & authentic Kona coffee! We loved our visit and will return!

Melissa Y.

Yelp
We had a lovely stay here! The family is warm and generous. My husband and I are not "high-end resort people", so this was right up our alley - this felt like a family home, very comfortable and welcoming, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Breakfast was delicious each morning with fresh fruits, bread, juices, and omelets. I loved the sounds of the frogs and birds each morning and night. We would happily stay here again.

Natasha G.

Yelp
I just got back from my trip to Kona and wanted to write a review for this B&B. We really enjoyed staying here and it felt like home. When we pulled up, we were immediately greeted by one of the owners (David). He proceeded to give us a tour of the grounds and then suggested pulling my car closer to my room (Japanese Tea Room) for unloading the bags. Our room was very clean, charming and comfortable. This room is close to the road so you can hear cars drive by but nothing that takes away from a good rest or deep sleep. The breakfast was top notch and a good amount of the fruit was picked right off the trees surrounding the B&B. Everything tasted fresh and healthy. The Kona coffee was fabulous and the table setting and ambiance was exactly what we were looking for. We loved our stay here and will be back soon!

Bob S.

Yelp
I enjoyed the Hale Maluhia so much. I felt more like I was visiting friends than a stay in a huge resort. Fresh filling breakfast, comfy bed and 5 star service for a B&B. This is a get away from it all kind of place, situated in the rainforest so lots of beautiful foliage and fauna.

Alaina S.

Yelp
I would give 10 stars out of 5 if I could. Owners Dave & Miriam treated us like family when we stayed here. I highly recommend Miriam's "high tea" breakfast featuring homemade bread and lemon curd and fruit and herbs picked fresh from the garden on-site. Dave's expert advice on what to do/see while on the island proved invaluable for our stay. We originally wanted to visit Kuai on this trip but couldn't because of COVID restrictions. What a blessing that we ended up coming to the Big Island and staying at the Hale Maluhia Country Inn. It made all the difference in the world! These two (three counting the baby on the way) weary travelers came excited to spend time in the sun and waves, and received so much more. We were welcomed like a son and daughter and left RESTED. Thank you!!!

Missy T.

Yelp
What a beautiful inviting place to stay!!! Dave and Miriam were great host. The breakfast was served on the lanai, fresh coffee, fruit, homemade bread, and omelettes prepared with all the ingredients.. the room was tastefully decorated and clean . The grounds are picturesque of tranquillity.

Phemelo M.

Yelp
This is where my husband and I chose to make our honeymoon and we absolutely did not regret it! We live on the Big Island and wanted to get away but couldn't go off-island so this was perfect. The comfort of home but feeling like we were far away. A great plus was that we were within close proximity of great restaurants and also grocery stores if we wanted to have a private dinner. The Banyan Cabin that we stayed in was perfect and clean, beautifully set up for our arrival. Mirriam and Dave, the owners, and their family/staff are delightful and went the extra mile to ensure we felt welcome and taken care of. I still reminisce about waking up to the sweet sounds of birds chirping and glorious sunlight streaming into our room. Would definitely visit again!! A must if you'd like to have fun exploring the island yet still have somewhere calm and peaceful to retreat to in the evenings. Thanks for making my honeymoon such a special one!!

Yelp
This is the Inn with the Banyan Cottage! Whenever you make your way to Hawaii, do not miss out on staying here. I've stayed everywhere from all over the United States to a LOT of places in Europe and this was the best, BY FAR. I can't adequately express how spectacular the experience here has been. Staying in a TREEHOUSE with a kitchen, living room, dining room, bath with jacuzzi tub, and king size bedroom with all the amenities including cable TV, this is the lap of luxury. There's an outdoor hot tub and we have had breakfast daily that is scrumptious and fresh, farm to table. You just have to come and see for yourselves. (Tag with a like or comment so that you can refer back to this when you're ready to use it for a Hawaii trip.) We arrived as strangers and now leave as friends. It's bittersweet, but we do plan to come back one day! Aloha to Hale Maluhia Country Inn Love Peace Tranquility on the Big Island

Yelp
So, true to all the other reviews, this place IS beautiful. Gorgeous setting, nicely constructed. We stayed in the cottage, which is spacious and private. But... It's totally gone to seed. The cottage was FILTHY, and in poor repair. When we checked in, here are a few of the greatest hits we found: * The futon was covered in a thick layer of dust and insect carcasses. * The short hallway to the bathroom had some of the dirtiest carpet we've ever seen. * The shower and jacuzzi were covered in more insect carcasses and droppings. * The mattress smelled so musty I had trouble sleeping. The comforter was worse, we couldn't use it. * There were large holes in the screens and windowframes and gaps in the floorboards, leaving it totally open to the tropical insects. * One window frame had lost a slat and had it replaced with rolled up paper towel. Oh, and the food IS pretty good, but be aware that if you want anything hot, you have to cook it yourself. If this had been a rustic cabin in the woods it would have been one thing, but for a premium-rate bed and breakfast (I note some other reviews say the prices were really good, but we were charged luxury prices as of our stay) all the genuine potential of the space just makes it doubly upsetting that its condition wasn't fit to rent as lodgings.

Kathy F.

Yelp
We were visiting friends from the mainland and stayed here for New Years. When we first arrived the place looked somewhat dark and damp. Our room was clean and very comfortable. The next morning we realized that we really were in a little oasis. The sunlight brightened up the place and because our sleep had been so comfortable we realized that we had made an excellent choice. The breakfast is a made to order...you order it, you make it!!! All of the ingredients are on hand to make a delicious breakfast: omelets, waffles, toast on homemade bread, fresh fruit (already sliced), juice and coffee. Dining is outside where you are frequently entertained by birds or chickens. Reminds us of this song..." There's a sweet, sweet spirit in this place..."

Waiola C.

Yelp
We were lucky enough to accidentally find this beautiful spot and spent 2 nights (during the big Hawaii islands hurricanes 2014 ridiculousness) and had a wonderful time. The property is beautiful, the large cottage gorgeous, the food excellent and the staff fantastic! I don't think I could have enjoyed myself any more.

Cassie A.

Yelp
I thought this place was awesome! The owners were real nice and was willing to work with me and my pet in an emergency! I found the place on Pet Friendly Hotels. It was late at night and I had to find something, since I had my first training for my new job the next morning. I found this little Inn was just one of two that was pet friendly. When I got their they were a little skeptical about my pet and the old owner said he has never had pets there, but they were willing to work with me. The surrounding sounds are like music and the place is beautiful! I definitely would go back to them!

Carin S.

Yelp
We were very disappointed upon arrival when we walked past trash in the carport on our way to the front door of the inn. Our room was advertised as "Old Hawaiian." While that sounds enchanting, we were shown to a room that had mold in the shower and on the ceiling and walls of the bathroom. There was peeling linoleum under the sink with dirt and mold visible. The walls were also dirty. It was so unhealthy that we checked out immediately after one night of a four night reservation. To add to the frustration, the owner refused to refund any of our deposit and charged us for all three nights we did not stay. Definitely did not meet the expectations as posted in many reviews.

Emily D.

Yelp
Me and my partner came here for a getaway for a night and we both enjoyed it a lot! It really reminded me of my grandparents house and made me feel at home. Everyone was very nice, fresh breakfast, and a nice private room:) In the future we would definitely consider coming back !

Yelp
Perfect for those who like convenience of being near Kailua and the beach but don't want to be in the middle of all the tourist stuff. (It's a five minute drive away.) It's not the most luxurious B&B but I'm giving it five stars since it's a great value -- their cheapest room, the Japanese teahouse cottage, is $68.50/night (separate bathroom in the house, which is a minor annoyance, but the room is quite large) to the $168.50 Banyon cottage. We stayed in the Japanese tea house cottage and the small Maile room ($78.50). The tea house cottage is perfect for those looking to save, and it has a lot of character. We'd originally signed up for the Maile room for three nights but due to a confusion with their reservations system only the tea house was available the first night. Despite the inconvenience of trekking outside and downstairs to access the restroom (which is specifically designated for just the people in the room, though since it's off the kitchen I wouldn't be surprised if others occasionally use it) we liked it so much we stayed there an additional night. As an added bonus, they give you a box of chocolate covered macadamias your first night. Breakfasts were excellent. There's coffee and tea available starting at 7 a.m. and food from 8-9ish. There's always fruit juice (sometimes a fruit shake too), fresh cut fruit, including pineapples, apple bananas, papaya, and maybe kiwis, fresh bread, a self-serve omelet bar, and something else (first day cinnamon rolls, second day waffles, third day croissants, some with Nutella inside). There's also a koi pond and a jacuzzi (they heat it on request) that we didn't take advantage of. Lots of Canadians and Europeans stayed there (including a couple who were return visitors) plus a number of East Coasters. It's not the place to go if you want the high end luxury of the Fairmont, but it's great for those seeking comfortable accommodations for budget prices.

Jasmine H.

Yelp
This is one of the sweetest B&B's on the island! Ken is literally one of the nicest and most genuine people I have ever met and he runs a really beautiful and MAGICAL spot! The sound of coqui frogs are just perfect to lull you to sleep, the koi ponds and waterfalls, both beautiful and relaxing. The morning breakfast was served by some extremely sweet and loving people...I could taste the love in the food! The lanai for coffee in the morning and to just listen to the birds feels like it is out of a dream! I really felt like I stepped into a different world and am extremely thankful I was recommended this spot! I usually go for the more mainstream hotels. This was a huge treat!!!! I felt like family leaving and didn't want to go! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Mark F.

Yelp
Friendly, conveniently located, beautiful building / felt fancy for the price, free WiFi, comfy and relatively quiet. It would've been handy to have a mini-fridge in the room, but no big deal. We didn't end up trying the breakfast options, though you-make-it sounds handy. We'd stay there again if visiting Kona, though we actually did more things in Captain Cook.

David W.

Yelp
Me and my wife just returned from our 2nd trip to Kona, Hi. We lodged at this Bed & Breakfast. We have nothing but positive things to share about this Bed & Breakfast that is located a few miles up in the hills overlooking the shores at Kailua-Kona. The owners and host/hostess, Dave and Miriam are wonderful and positive. They really make your stay successful. You begin each day with a full breakfast and kona coffee on the main lanai. Just hanging around this location located in the a tropical forest, is so therapeutic and peaceful. There are areas around and above the hotel that you can hike to and get outstanding ocean views. At night, you fall asleep to the sounds of many coqui frogs, crickets and roosters. Our room was clean and had a mini-frig and mini-microwave. It also had a small TV. Our room had 4 chairs and a table on the lanai just outside the sliding door. Bottom line, is that we would strongly recommend this lodging to anyone who wishes to visit the Kailua-Kona area. We hope to visit again in the future!

Yelp
This was a nice little spot, especially if you're looking for something a little different and with plenty of character. My husband and I were visiting from Maui and stayed two nights here. The breakfast was good (you have to cook the eggs yourself but luckily I can cook so it wasn't a problem for me) and the coffee is wonderful. It was really nice to have breakfast on the outside patio and watch all the little finches and chickens twittering about. There were also tons of geckos that would happily invite themselves to share your food. They were persistent, but it was entertaining. The only reason for the lack of that last star is just because there were a couple issues with the room. We stayed in the tea house. We found that the bathroom lights didn't work the first night we were there. The outlets were ok so we dragged a floor lamp in there. We told the staff in the morning and it was fixed right away, but they did acknowledge that they were aware of the problem, so that was sort of a bummer that it wasn't fixed before we arrived. The second night we discovered that the hot water also seems to not work at night. We had to wait to shower until after breakfast the next day and we felt nasty. They said they thought the bathroom lights were on a timer or something so maybe the hot water heater was, too? That doesn't make sense to me but that's what they were saying. In any case, if I'm on the big island again, I would definitely stay here again. :)

Nisse R.

Yelp
My husband and I stayed here for a week during an anniversary trip. It was amazing. It was wonderful to have a peaceful sanctuary to retreat to after a busy day. The staff was friendly and helpful. Breakfast was very enjoyable. I loved all the fresh, seasonal fruits and veggies as well as raised on site eggs. All in all, wonderful. Not a single complaint. This will be our go-to from now on!

Rolf G.

Yelp
The facilities at Hale Maluhia are very nice with lots of vegetation and well landscaped. However that said, the owner/manager, Ken, (who has been there about 6 months he said) a very nice man, did not seem to have a handle on things. When we arrived there, he wasn't certain which room we were in (we had to tell him), we had a party of 3 with my wife, daughter, and myself but the room was only provided 2 sets of towels and trying to get another set from Ken proved to be a little frustrating, he told us the windows could all be opened but after wrestling with them discovered that only a few of them actually could be, and last but not least we had to make our own breakfast, if we wanted anything other than fruit, which is the first time we ever had to do that at a bed and breakfast. Maybe his place is just a bed and (make your own) breakfast? Also, be advised that Ken is a pastor and there were lots of religious artifacts here and there including in the library which had much of its stock devoted to Jesus. If you are a devout Christian, you will likely find this aspect of the place appealing; if you are not, then you may not find it so appealing. We probably won't stay there again. I imagine it was better managed in the past given the reviews we've seen.

Yelp
Excellent place to stay while in Kona. Very peaceful and quiet. Lovely breakfast and setting. The staff are all very helpful and friendly. Definitely would stay there again.
