"Ham and Eggs, Historic Core. Originally labeled Uncle Joe's Ham & Eggs, this hole-in-the-wall eatery served its blue collar neighbors dishing standard diner fare among a nondescript downtown block. Although the location changed hands to become a pub and music venue, the new owners retained the name, signage, and many of the interiors kitschy elements, crafting a space that feels down-to-earth and altogether cheeky. Stroll in to catch local acts while enjoying something cold and fermented."

The best place to hang out and kick it with old friends. Really got inspired with music and the drinks we ordered. The bartender she was amazing she was welcoming and very down to earth Ariel

Google
Small place. Just beer and wine. Small (SMALL = tiny) stage in second room. A total pain to try to see/hear a band here. Going to avoid this place from now on.

Great live reading from noir writers at this cool neighborhood bar that often features live music and comedians. Authors read from stories published in Switchblade Magazine.

Google
Oh my God wish you guys would have come to this place when it was a tiny Chinese American eatery without New York style in the middle of downtown LA. So it was so and the person that took over the place kept the name turning into a bar which is pretty cool, sometimes they have live music, and you can still get some canned beer for $4. And up. Now Uncle John's the restaurant move nearby a couple of blocks highway and is it still very really good, you can Google it downtown for the location

Great beer selection. Better wine selection. The music at this place is always on point. Be ready to use Shazam a lot, or ask the friendly bartender what is the awesome music they are playing. This place is as authentic as it gets. Best prices in the neighborhood too!

Google
Ask for Sierra! She's awesome!! Love this place. Came by myself to grab happy hour beer to chill before my next meeting. Love this place!!! Can such an intimate cozy hip place exist in dtla?? YES! Happy hour is everyday 5pm-7pm with $4-$6 beer specials and $9 wine specials. Great vibes. Awesome service. They have a photobooth in the back. Looking forward to party here one night!! They look like they have life bands play here too.

Google
Beer and wine only but the prices are pretty reasonable. It's very close to another great bar, so I would hop back and forth if you come here to see music. The sound is actually really good, but the room is small and quickly gets too loud. Not a place I would go to drink but fine if you have friends or a band you want to check out.

I came here to catch a friend spinning. The decorations on the walls in the dancing area are pretty dope and they have a photobooth! It's small, so don't expect a huge crowd. It's also very casual. The bar only serves beer and cider. They might have wine, but no liquor. It's kind of a hole in the wall and doesn't look like a bar from the outside. It gets warm in there, so expect to take your jacket off if you're going to dance. The price isn't too bad, but it isn't a place I'd go to to "turn up" as the youths say. It's more of a spot to get your two step on and enjoy a chill vibe with your close pals. Parking is kinda hard to find if you don't want to pay - it's right by the Golden Gopher and some club, so get there early to find cheap parking.

Yelp
Loved this place. Would always pre-game here prior to the Teragram Ballroom ... super sad its shuttered the doors for good

Yelp
I think this place is permanently closed unfortunately. I haven't seen it open in quite a few weeks and I also saw a "Notice to Vacate" in their mail pile not long ago. Also their website is down. I'm hoping for the best but things aren't looking good. I will always love you Ham and Eggs.

Yelp
AWESOME small cozy space reminds me of a mini version of No Vacancy + Davey Wayne's Good Times 70s Bar. Super chill fun during happy hour but defintely a night party bar. Happy hour daily 5pm-7pm CHEAP beer and wine deals -- $5 for 2PBR, $4 shit cans, $6 drafts and craft cans, $9 wine. (Ask for Sierra! She's the best!) One side is a bar with bar stools, and the other room to jam out with live bands and music. Hip divey cozy bar.....my bar!! Love it!! Music is great. How to find this place? It's next to the restaurant in neon sign -- Colori.

Yelp
Last night there was a guy so intoxicated that he started kicking me and punched me in the face, and shoved my girlfriend down. Completely unprovoked, just a guy looking for a fight. I have a fat lip and she has scrapes and bruises. Why was the guy not thrown out earlier? Did they continue serving him? I don't know. Fun night!

Yelp
Played a show here once on tour and the owner ran in and unplugged our amps while we were playing

Yelp
I think this place closed, but it was truly the best bar in LA. Devastated I didn't go again before it closed. Love you Ham and Eggs. Hope you relocate like Colori. Hate the new Downtown.

Yelp
The spot itself is fun and cozy with reasonably priced drinks, but the bartender behind the counter was incredibly rude and ruined the whole experience. I had bought two ($4) beers during a music event being held at the bar, and when I went to purchase a two more for a friend and me the bartender, rather aggressively, asked me: "are you gonna tip this time" and I tried to explain I normally tip on the whole amount at the end of the night before I leave since I was planning on having a several more drinks. I asked why he was pressing me about it and He said he was just "calling me out" and that he was "cutting me off" because I don't know how to treat bartenders. As I tried to explain he would cut me off and tell me (not exaggerating) to: "go fuck yourself , fuck your mother , etc.." I worked in food service for many years and as someone who normally tips service workers well, I was really shocked and angry at the response I got, even after trying to explain myself the guy kept swearing at me, and mind you this was over a total of roughly 5 dollars if I was gonna tip over 25%. I'm all for getting bartenders paid but this really rubbed me the wrong way and I hope no one else has to get served by this guy. It was a really nasty experience and I will not be returning to drink or play music at this bar ever again, and I strongly recommend no one else ever does. Go buy a six pack at the liquor store instead; you'll save 15-20 bucks plus the hassle of an entitled bartender

Yelp
Best Bar in DTLA, great music which is not too loud to have a conversation, friendly bartenders, reminds me a lot of cool small indie bars in Berlin and Barcelona.

Yelp
LOVED this tavern. though limited to wine and beer, but such a cozy/intimate place with great music (live bands on saturdays). in my state of intoxication the band played michael jackson's "rock with you" and i was on this natural high and happiness. great atmosphere, talent, and drinks :) the owner and the bouncer were super nice as well :) they commented that i looked like i'm having a good time, i guess i was wearing happiness on my face!!

Yelp
The kind of divey hole in the wall joint that I love. Sierra was a great server w amazingly good energy. She accommodates every guest w the attention that they deserve all while giving the appearance that she enjoys her job and her customers. Met some cool people and had some great random barside chats. Two thumbs up.

Yelp
We love this place. Great bar downtown. I'd reccomend it. Great wine. Great beer. Easy parking. Good bands.

Yelp
This bar is the perfect start and/or finish to a night in DTLA, or an afterwork beer. Fun, gritty aesthetic with a very solid beer selection at 6 bucks a brew. Hard to beat. Service is A+, seating is solid for 2-6 per table. Drink up!

Yelp
Wandered in on a friday night trying to escape the amateur crowd around town. we walked in and the bartender was immediately warm and welcoming. She was attentive all night, i think my glass was never empty even when she was super slammed without any help behind the bar. Her selection in music is amazing. Loved every song on her playlist! Super local neighborhood dive bar vibe where everyone seemed to know each other, real refreshing for downtown. I hear they even have rock bands play but I'm not sure where to find that info out but the side room definitely provided enough space for it. cant wait to go back next week and catch the happy hour deals.

Yelp
I honestly can't get enough of this place. First of all, David (owner?), your replies on this page crack me up and are SO called for. They're part of the reason why I stopped by in the first place. Whoever's bashing this place, no one wants you here anyway so like he said, get a life. Recently moved to the area and it's already one of my favorite spots. Stumbled across it one day grabbing a slice next door, peeked in, made a note to self to stop by soon. So glad I have, twice already. Chill, clean, almost always never too crowded, and something about how the bar is lit classes up the joint, as does the fact that they only serve beer/wine and are 23+ (a little weird, but it's true)...perhaps to help weed out the riff raff, which I believe it does. The space is nice, and best of all the bartenders...just awesome. What you would expect with a solo bartender assertively manning a small bar like this, but with warmth and friendliness. Went incognito both times so didn't officially catch the name of each bartender but I think it was Michael on a Tuesday and last Friday, brought a friend there to catch up and we both loved our bartender, I think her name was Cece? A (good) live band was playing in the bar, in the adjacent room, while we were catching up over a bottle of white wine, in front of us a flower in a mini Miller High Life bottle basking in the glow of some dim lighting with a big $6 sign amidst beer cans. What a backdrop. My kind of joint.

Yelp
My friend and I walked by this place going to Golden Gopher next door, and she was like, "Mmmm, ham and eggs." I told her I wasn't hungry and wanted to get drunk and shoot pool already. That was the end of that... Until I was killing time, walked past and heard music that could not be coming from a diner. There was a sandwich board that read, "World's Greatest Happy Hour. Everything You Want $5." I went inside and talked to a bartender who looked like Jackknife from Superjail and asked about the HH special. "You get a shitcan of beer." He pointed to a chalkboard that indeed proclaimed a shitcan of beer was reason for cheer, and you could select from Rolling Rock, Tecate, Miller High Life, and I of course chose the Champagne of Shitcans. I chitchatted with him, which he tolerated. He played awesome music, everything from Jacques Brel's Ne Me Quitte Pas and Linda Scott's I've Told Every Little Star to rockabilly and electronic. An old timer in mirrored aviators and cowboy boots came and in pulled him outside for a long smoke break, and I was digging on the tiki Frankenstein mugs with Budweiser votives jammed into them and the many rows of hipster bar prerequisite photo booth strips. I like chinoiserie, too, so the original jade and cinnabar worked for me, though from a feng shui perspective it works against them. If you're a bar, you want metal and water. Black, white, blue, purple. Wood and fire will eat your profits. I think I can safely say these guys don't really care. It's a bit exclusive, like if they don't know you, come on in, but don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out. Underscoring that point, the bartender was chatting with The Gambler when they came back in, and he was saying he'd made a whole dollar so far. The guy pointed out that's a dollar he didn't have before. I didn't say it, but that's 25% of the cost of a shitcan, which seems to be all they serve, and I mean that in a good way.

Yelp
My boyfriend had been here once before and said it was pretty cool, so we came to check it out. We walked in and went up to the bar furthest away from the door (far from the menu posted up on the wall). We asked the bartender if they had any alcohol or just beer and wine, and she just shook her head no and walked away. We just waited for her to return, maybe she was busy. It happens. Then she came back and we asked what beer was on draft (again, because we can't see what's on the wall). In an incredibly rude tone she told us to walk to the other end and go read it ourselves. She just pointed at the other side of the bar and then walked away. What kind of service is that? If they were really busy, I could understand that she doesn't have time to tell us... but they weren't. "We actually have a few things on draft and if you step down this way you can see them on the wall." That's not so hard to say, is it? So we walk towards the exit and say thanks to her on the way out. Yes, sarcasm - yes, because she treated us so poorly. But it gets better - she flips us off on the way out. What on earth? She should be fired. How embarrassing for an establishment to have someone behave in that manner. If we were drunk and obnoxious, sure, be rude... but we were nothing but polite and she treated us like garbage. Definitely will never step foot back there again.

Yelp
Olivia and Sierra ROCK!!!! I love this little dive bar! PBR in a tall can. Beer on tap. Cool people! They sometimes have live bands and there is a picture booth in the back!

Yelp
Ham and Eggs is a small downtown bar with what would be amongst the last true remnants of old la. Prices aren't good and aren't bad, you're downtown. What makes this place special is its accessibility. Ham and Eggs is as no frills as it gets. It lies somewhere between a live music venue and dive bar. I'd recommend stopping by for a drink, plenty of nights with live music.

Yelp
(Drank 01/25/14 SA @ 8:00pm): Dr. Seuss would've been so proud, he'd jump up and down and be real loud! The vagabonds I made friends with during an earlier event in the area and myself "stumbled" out of the nearby Golden Gopher and headed for Ham & Eggs Tavern as we continued our impromptu DTLA bar crawl. This place was very unassuming and if it weren't for my Yelp app and the street sign that pointed it out, we might've missed it http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=vyi5Sqm0sSskCm6sa55jMw&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw. Suffice it to say, there was no food in this Whoville watering hole, but we were thirsty, and dammit we were going to drink! My libations consisted of choices from the Aloha State of Hawaii: Maui Brewing Company Bikini Blonde ($6.00) - Your typical pilsner with a nice bold taste and smooth finish. The label was killer which out you in an aloha state of mind http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=WPShTgfFMB-anPPSkiTwCg&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw. Maui Brewing Company Mana Wheat ($6.00) - Once the bartender mentioned that this had a pineapple taste to it, it was on, because I'm all about the pineapple! A bit on the hoppy side I felt it accentuated more the sweet pineapple flavor. This was a hit with me and left me wanting to play my ukulele and give the "shaka" sign! \mn/ Service - Since I was the only patron at this time (a group of hipsters came in about an hour later which was my cue to "exit, stage right"!), so I received undivided attention from the cute (and lone) female bartender from Texas. We shot the shit, talked about career goals, music, etc. - it was really pleasant. This will certainly be updated when it's more than a drinking party for two and I'm not the only one imbibing! Parking ($6.00) - As most business in the area, they didn't have their own lot. So, I parked at the nearby Joe's Auto Park where the rates varied depending on day, time, capacity, etc. Otherwise, there were plenty of other parking lots in the area with similar rates. There were also street parking meters, but I had no idea what the rates were. Atmosphere, décor, ambience - Apparently, this used to be an American & Chinese Food To Go restaurant based on the window sign, but it looked like there may've been counter-seating at one time or other. Well, the seats were gone, and frankly, I didn't see any seats or tables whatsoever, and this place was slim both in the bar area and where the live bands played http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=NpvgWgxqvRhUEfqcpJXO1w&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw. There were some very cool paintings on all the walls, as well as various other artwork http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=h3PStXJ0xsa7-4M1EUf1Fg&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw. But you had to check out the bathroom with the exceptionally lovely artwork which was reason enough to duck in here http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=DCuHXif8dcY5hRajZPSc-Q&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw. Lighting was extremely dim as there might've been only a night-lite, faux candles, street lights from outside, and the illumination from my cellphone and the iPod player; intimate, baby! There were no TVs, and music played from an iPod or live bands. Attire - Although I was in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops because of an earlier event, I'd recommend pants, a shirt with some buttons, and actual shoes. There was no dress code, but come on, it wasn't a sports bar! Overall, I was no Sam, no Sam I am, nor any eggs, no green eggs or ham, but Ham & Eggs Tavern was as simple and whimsical as the rhythmic verses of any childhood limerick. They had no beer taps nor liquor; strictly a cans and wine bottles place. Beers averaged around $5.00 (I loved that they had a "shit beer" list that consisted of PBR, Olympia, and more), while wine-by-the-glass was around $8.00. It was like we raided a buddy's house while his parents were gone and his older sister was serving us and collected tips (ummm, this scenario actually happened in high school!). I enjoyed the chill vibe, but I wouldn't go out of my way to return - only if I were in the neighborhood again. I found fairly good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (total bill was around $12.00 before tip), but I felt the prices were a bit on the high side with minimal selection. And, they accepted my credit card of choice...AMEX! 3.5 STARS

Yelp
Awesome place. Bartender with the Afro on Saturday night has zero personality when it comes to newbies in the joint. We saw the sweet body. Would go back again.

Yelp
Ham n' Eggs... as a Jewish girl I'm obligated to not enjoy myself here. Why couldn't this place be called Lox and Capers? It's loud, everyone here is unattractive and rude except the bartender. Jillian is like uncovering a geode. You crack through the mess of people to find this sparkling gem of a person. She is gorgeous, which was simply a bonus, and an absolutely perfect example of what hospitality should be in Los Angeles. She could tell what I wanted before I even asked. Psychic bartender network? Either way, she makes this downtown bar scene refreshing and glittery. Will come back. For her.

Yelp
Literally the best place ever. I stopped in for a bottle to take into Colori Kitchen next door. The storefront is so clever. I don't want to spoil it. Inside is dark as hell and cozy. They have a really esoteric selection of beer, wine and ciders. I got an amazing, cold, large bottle of cider to take with me for dinner. It was perfect and so is this bar!
google avatar

Eric S.

Yelp
It has a fun name, so you know. You got to at least hop in and see what they're about. And then they got some beer, so you order one and realized "oh that wasn't very expensive" and then you see they have that one craft brew you've been thinkin' about so you have another. And then you're already pretty much settled in so have another. Then some live music starts poppin' off and you're like oh this is pretty nice. That narrated story can be your narrated evening if you come by Ham & Eggs one of them evenings. The service is friendly, ambiance is a little dark, beer selection is nice for a dive(ish) bar, not much to not like here!
google avatar

Andy C.

Yelp
Let's start off with customer service! This tavern has the most hard working bartender. I met Jillian tonight, she's the only reason I'm writing a review because she's got the best attitude, the best service, and best recommendations (for drinks) in addition to musical taste to add to ambience. She really sets a fun and easy going vibe to welcome everyone to their amazing improv nights. Jillian took care of my party tonight, satisfied everyone's unique palette, and was so very knowledgeable about the entire menu. The lady's got a great sense of humor and is gracious even when people don't return the favor to her. Please make sure to tip her because she's the only bartender with ears and a good heart in DTLA.

Yelp
My friend Chiwan C. is hosting a new reading series at Ham & Eggs Tavern called The Instant, featuring a diverse crew of L.A. writers, as well as a fine selection of instant ramen, available at the bar. I participated in the inaugural event on Monday and had a great time. I hadn't heard of Ham & Eggs before and was surprised to find that it was in super central downtown, on a block I'd driven through dozens of times before. The place is just very small and unassuming, tucked away without bright signage, easy to miss even if you're looking. I have no idea how long it's been there, but it feels older and grittier than most bars popping up in downtown nowadays--I say this as a woman who spends most of her out-of-house drinking time in precious beer and cocktail bars, but it struck me as a legitimate dive bar, which you don't see on every block in downtown. It was dark and comfortable with a gruff charm--fun and eclectically decorated while still looking like it might smell bad. The space was divided into two main rooms--the bar area, with stools all around, and a wider event/hang-out space, with a stage in front. This was where we had the reading, and it was a great venue for this event. Service was fast and attentive. I only had one drink, but I got it right away. The beer and wine selection was pretty decent for a tiny bar. I had a $6 draft of Dale's Pale Ale, and there were a lot of bottles and cans to choose from, including a list of $4 "shit cans." Unfortunately, the bar doesn't have a full liquor license. A couple fingers of whiskey would go pretty well with these Ham & Eggs. I wouldn't go out of my way to hang out here or anything (particularly given the parking situation, which is very much heart-of-downtown terrible), but I'll come back for The Instant, and would recommend it to anyone in need of some beer or wine in this area. Ham & Eggs is a fun bar with a lot of character, a notable downtown dive.

Yelp
Not trying to be a Karen but I am someone who has lived and worked in DTLA for over ten years and have been going to ham and eggs for a while and so happy that it is open. I also work in the service industry. I walked in tonight with my service dog (not emotional support) and was yelled at by Erica and told that we can't be there and then treated extremely rudely when I told her that he was a service dog that frequents this place. She then laughed with other people at the bar about me having a service dog when I went to the restroom. I came back and asked her why she was being rude, tried to show her my service dog license and she continued to be nasty. It sucks because Jack who is usually there is the greatest but definitely do not go there if this girl is there. The owners should get her some training on customer service or perhaps hire other people like Jack.

Yelp
Walked by and the bartender welcomed us in. Great vintage beers . It was a Sunday afternoon and we were the only ones there. Planned to have just one round but our bartender engaged us with some great conversation and we had a nice time chatting with him and so we stuck around for another round. Looking forward to coming back after everything opens back up.

Yelp
Created a yelp just to review this place. Spending my first week ever in Downtown LA and alone, I was a bit concerned about finding a good place to spend my evenings. Worry no more. Happened upon the Ham Monday night and went back four days in a row. Great atmosphere, great bar tenders, great regulars, great music, cheap beer. I'm sold. I want to thank everyone I met here for making me feels so welcome. Walking into the Ham is like getting a big hug, a hug that makes you drunk.

Yelp
If you live downtown this should be your regular bar! It's got great beer, it's right downtown and there's a taco truck steps away. Something about this bar makes you feel like you've stumbled upon a secret. We went on a Wednesday which apparently was the right choice. The bartender on Wednesday's is Jillian and she's great plus they had a comedy show in the side room where I got to see one of my fav comedians from TV. What are the chances, I guess pretty good since it's ever Wednesday but still I'm glad we stumbled upon it.

Yelp
I don't think I will be going here any more to see shows or even to get a beer as a matter of fact. Here's why: Earlier this week, around 9pm I came by Ham and Eggs to check out one of my favorite local acts. I was trying to order a beer and I overheard the SUPER RUDE bartender Olivia seriously talking down to one of the band cats who apparently booked the night and was playing later (for free). She was saying they did not bring enough people and this "wasn't a rehearsal space." Who even goes out that early? The first band played their set and rocked, and as the next band was setting up, the same bartender lady came up to the cat who booked the show and said SHOWS OVER and sent all the rest of the bands home without playing! SHE STRAIGHT UP CANCELLED THE REST OF THE NIGHT because they "didn't bring people". I have never seen anything like that before and I go to shows every week! The people in charge of this place did not even let the night unfold to see if people would come for the band. It was already booked. Why not let them play. Your not paying them. Makes zero sense and it was so rude and condescending AND A TURN OFF. Making all these band members drive all the way over and promote the shows all week and not even let them play?? There was like 10 band members I watched go home without playing. Craziest thing is, all I was there for was to see live music. So weak. Ham & Eggs Ownership, don't bother trying to spin this some other way. After I scrolled down further in these reviews, I noticed other musicians complaining about the way they are treated at this place. It's an uncool pattern. The local music scene is small and everyone knows each other - musicians and fans like me. Perhaps you have heard of Twitter and Facebook? Bad behavior spreads fast. I don't know whose gonna wanna play there if this keeps up. I know I am never going there again.

Yelp
Unrated punk bar heaven. Locals during the week. Gritty bands crammed into a tiny room playing reverberated awesomeness on the weekends. I'd give it 5 stars, but the bar is limited. More genuine that anything in the area.

Yelp
As I was crawling along the gutter with some of my cohorts err friends we kinda climbed out and low and behold was this place. For a bit I thought I had been sucked into a Dr Suess book and then realized it said Tavern. But it was in some old dollar Chinese place that they never changed the decor from. As soon as you walk into this beer/wine bar, you realize that you are not in a Dr Suess world, but Hipster Heaven. They serve PBR TallBoy cans, random vino and other beers, have crazy art on the walls, in the bathrooms, and hell i forgot to look at the ceiling but I bet they have some funky chit there too. Pro Tip: It appears to be a locals haunt You can tell that they have live bands play here, but maybe for an audience of about 10 as there isnt much room on the band side of the bar. Figure the band and audience must fit into a 15' by 35' or 40' space. Literally there is almost no room here. Pro Tip #2: The pricing here seems a bit high for what they are selling. I think its kinda too bad that for whatever reason they didnt have a liquor license as well as the beer/wine license. I had been all ready to roll with some bourbon scotch or whiskey, till they only had beer/wine =( They had some great signs mixed in around here, too bad i was a bit too inebriated to remember what any of them said. I didnt even take pics, I think my phone may have been dead, but I cant remember back through the haze that well. Definitely a fun place to stop in and take a bunch of photos though. The girls in our group were running in the bathrooms (both sexes) to take pics as well as having us do lots of group shots in the band area, but it wasnt band night when we were there. I bet if the band is in, then you can hear chit there either, that place is so small and confined. So on the frugality scale this place sucks. On the trendy scale they have a decent to good following. However it appears that they save their own azz by just having an environment that induces fun good times for all. I know our group sure as hell loved it here. Just jump in and dont expect to have a barstool or even a table... anticipate crowding in and babbling with your friends... but what is more fun than that at a bar?

Yelp
Perhaps the best of what once WAS downtown, while embracing what she has already become. One the best little bars in LA. Don't come with more than 3 people. Don't be a loud asshole outside either. You can bring Italian from next door inside to eat, but again, don't be an asshole and take up too much bar space. All the bartenders seem to get it, which is great, and pretty much have better than average taste in music. Lots of good canned craft beers. Bottles of win can be bought too to take into dinner next door. You're welcome. #dtla

Yelp
I was leading a path of destruction across downtown, beginning at what were legitimately nice restaurants and finding darker and darker corners after that. AMERICAN & CHINESE FOOD TO GO in almost startling bold letters marks the entrance to this former food establishment now divey wine / beer / live music bar. This place is dark, in the best way. The photos are misleading, making it seem almost empty, sterile. Of course its hard to photograph dark. It was easy to spot the bartender however, a cheerful, social number, by her shirt which donned that bright, sequined yellow smiley face as she seemed to be providing her own music on an ipod behind the bar that consisted of deep cuts from DJ Quik and the like. Above the bar, chalkboards listed small selections of beer ($3-5) and wine ($7-10), but the bartender was also more than happy to guide you along with your answers to Dry? Sweet? Red? White? Fruity? Full-bodied? It's not your parents' wine bar. It's likely not everyone's cup of tea, but it's the sort of thing increasingly found in downtown and the sort of thing downtown does well. A wine bar for the neighborhood. Casual, dark, unassuming, and not in a gimmicky sort of way. A dark, hole-in-the-wall neighborhood hangout. With live music! I punched out an email to a friend who lives in the neighborhood to get the message across. It read, tersely: Ham & Eggs Tavern, good.

Yelp
Did I see "wine bar"? I don't know. For me it was a comfortable hole in the wall, makes you feel like a mouse among mice. Cheese (beer of many great selections) stacked along the wall and in their coolers, drafts, and yes probably wine and liquor too. Behind the wall of the bar is a small punk rock venue where bands can feel at home, and back there also, the restrooms where the narrative slowly unfurls like a long red tongue. All of this lost in the thick of downtown, amongst the demented hustle. Our bartender was perfect, working to inspire. I lost my jacket, but who cares? I could be a regular here, if I ever was one.

Yelp
Rock and Roll is alive and well in DTNLA , just rough enough to keep away "people who don't get it" and warm enough for your lady friend not to be intimidated. These places abound in New York and Chicago good to see this sort of place thrive in urban LA. Hell Yes.

Yelp
On a night where I intended not to venture into the world for comfort or company, I found myself drawn to Ham & Eggs by its unassuming facade. As I entered, Sierra greeted me and my friend with a grin and asked what I was "looking for" while gesturing to the chalkboard of wine and beer selections above the bar. I decided on one of the few drafts and gathered, through conversation, that the list constantly changes. Aside from a couple drafts, the majority of beers are served in cans, which I find myself increasingly fond of, but the wine is what intrigues me here. None of the typical "affordable" wine brands are found on their list, and the few that I sampled were quite good, in spite of their modest price tag. What made the experience even more enjoyable, was that everyone who came into the bar acted as if they were all about to experience the same thing. Everyone commented on everyone else's beer or wine selection, asked where everyone was from, and generally acted as any good community of people should act. As if it were some communal experience. Perhaps it was because tonight was the night before a holiday, or not. What I know is that I will definitely be going back. Cheers!

Yelp
This is the best place in LA hands down for these simple reasons. 1. Ollie the bartender is the sweetest, smartest, most beautiful person I have ever met and I wish she were my wife. Thanks Ollie for always being the best. 2. The bathroom murals and the western mural were painted by famous local LA artist Annie Motel. A national treasure!!! Check them out they are so weird. 3. The movie Tabloid Blvd had it's screening here. That's a piece of Hollywood history you shouldn't forget!! 4. The beer and wine selection is off the hook! 5. There are great performances here such as The brilliant Hustle Roses. There are also art shows and comedy shows here too! 6. The owners and everyone else who has a hand in this place are wonderful. 7. There is a great pizza spot next door! So you can have pizza and drink AT THE SAME DAMN TIME! 8. There's a photo booth. 9. They have a psychic sign. 10. Sometimes Ollie plays Elvis.

Yelp
Best local downtown bar ever. Don't come here. It's mine. :-) The only thing better than the bartenders (see Sierra) are the clientele. Everyone talks to everyone else. Everyone is friendly. Newcomers are welcomed. I love this place. The eponymous ham & eggs beer is not my favorite, but they have an excellent selection of beer and wine. I'll be back every f*cking day. Seriously. You just want to live here. So don't even think of sitting on my f*cking stool. :-)

Yelp
I like Ham & Eggs.. green ones of course. This place is in a misleading area that's sorta under construction. But don't let that mislead you from going here. Drinks here aren't that heavy on the prices and what's special about this place is its conjoining room. Yeah there's turn tables for me to pretend to spin on. that room also has some neat decor of street signs and what not. I felt so fly and felt the need to just drive my car in there. JK. But definitely drop by here and also to the next door Golden Gopher too.

Yelp
I'm a little biased since I live close by, but this place is a pretty cool/chill dive bar, with live music/DJs. I came after work on a Thursday with some friends and was still in my work clothes, and definitely felt overdressed. I ordered a Stella (all beers are served in cans, pretty cool) but apparently the norm here is to drink PBRs. Regardless, even though I felt out of place with my collared/tucked in shirt & slacks and "fancy" beer, I absolutely want to come back here and possibly check out some of the live music. I figure this is a cool place to start off and/or end your night, but I'm not sure if I want my night to completely revolve around coming here.

Yelp
This place is by far my favorite go-to spot in LA. I'm almost hesitant to review it because I don't want it to get popular and loose all it's local charm, so if you're reading this...be cool. There are so many things I love about H & E. The cozy (read: small) intimate atmosphere attracts a humble and friendly local crowd. You will make friends here every time, if you want to, and the bartenders are the best. The live music venue in the second room is always rocking out with some awesome local band or DJ and the diversity in music keeps it different every time. When there is a band playing it can get loud but never so loud you're screaming, like a lot of places. The bar staff and the owners are without a doubt the best part of this operation (besides the photo booth and the abundance of PBR). I've never felt more welcome. It's basically like drinking with friends who run a bar. So chill. Last Thursday night I randomly stopped by for a beer and a chat with an old friend and ended up dancing and singing and drinking with other regulars, whom I had just met that night, and all because of the magical charms of the bartender Sierra who rocked the best Throwback Thursday mix ever...so great that by the end of then night the entire bar was dancing, and we closed it down. Like I said, I was just going to have one drink and instead stayed 3 hours. Best night ever...and truly because of Sierra (spunky blonde chica) and the overall style of the bar....local, laid back, free spirited. This place is like a dive that never dove. Fan 4 life.

Yelp
Great intimate beer and wine only bar. They have their own beer on tap, and an excellent and well priced selection of canned beers (Golden Brown's Get up Offa dat Brown is an excellent session brown ale). Wine selection is good too. Crowd is chill. Usually theres a good DJ/band on the other side. A great escape from the douchy or overpriced bars in DTLA.

Yelp
A bar. Nothing special. I heard it was a breakfast joint then a bar and it looks as if nothing was change . The bar area is to small to enjoy a group outing . Dont recall the tall bartenders name but he was friendly and a good hand behind the bar.

Yelp
Chill bar in downtown built out of a former diner. The place is a dark rectangle serving beer and wine. Music is a focus. An adjacent rectangle to the bar area serves as a small live music venue, and they have DJ's some nights. The house music system's sub woofer adds a noticeable punch to the music even when it's just a mix coming off the bartender's iPhone. They're pretty obviously into music, as the selection played during an early evening visit was ahead of the curve. In fact, "ahead of the curve" sums up the vibe of the particular mix of retro, dive, wine bar and music venue the Ham and Eggs Tavern puts across. It was a perfect environment for a couple musicians to suck down a few early evening beers downtown. I don't know how much of a scene the place is destined to become, but I can recommend it as a cool dark environment to dig some tunes and have a drink. Staff is friendly and attitude free, which is a nice bonus.

Yelp
It may looked "closed" from the outside, but once you get inside? Try their self-brewed Lager. It rocks. Affordable drinking at $4 beer and $8 wine. Went to see The Bugs (Portland) here. Reminds me of little rocknroll clubs back East... Great scene. Amazingly lovely bartender (Sierra). Good vibes all around and excellent on a Tuesday night!

Yelp
Good lord this place is hip and douchy! I love it! Having come here to grab drinks with friends one night, i'll have to admit that I did really fall into the deep moody yet slightly warm environment. While yes, I was was surrounded by both dbag hipsters and your typical snobby LA trend followers, they were a fairly nice eclectic group of people I tend to steer away from. The beer was cheap and the bartender was quick to serve. I'm not much of a wine drinker but the girls all seemed to be enjoying their glasses of booze juice. I wouldn't say that this would be a go to bar of choice, but I do have to admit that I did enjoy myself and wouldn't mind making another run at it. It's probably my fault for not having drank enough but in my defense, I enjoy a good whiskey more than a glass of PBR lol.

Yelp
I received a message from the owner (David) apologizing for the incident. He was very kind and seemed truly sorry for what happened. For that, he's won back a customer! Thanks David!
