This was a real mixed bag, with good elements and not so good thrown in to what was, as expected, a decent chain hotel. ||The first thing to say is it is right next door to the railway line. So there are really very frequent trains that you can hear and feel, though they were not so obtrusive as to disturb our sleep or conversation. It was a train spotter’s delight, as we got close up views of a train every few minutes 24/7.||That meant the location was convenient as the public transport system is cheap and efficient. From Sauvignyplatz or zoological gardens we could travel to anywhere in the city in 20-30 minutes. And the neighbouring area had a good range of shops, cafes and restaurants. ||The room was well designed, seemed recently refurbished, and had a desk, sofa bed, TV as well as the main bed. The shower room was good, spotlessly clean and with good water temperature and pressure. However I found the bed very firm, so I woke up stiff each morning. Also the TV had no options to use subscription channels (Netflix, prime, Disney, etc) so unless you bring an hdmi cable and device there was only a limited range of German language telly and radio, with points the signal was fuzzy or cut out entirely mid film. WiFi was adequate, but not amazing. ||The buffet breakfast was plentiful and informal, with some nice items (good coffee, fruit juice, yogurts, breads, cheese, jam, cake) and some cooked items, which were frequently replenished. However the scrambled eggs were slimy and the vegan nuggets were inedible - I suspect they were deep fried insufficiently but left to sit in the oil. You could literally wring oil out of them, and pressing them repeatedly in a serviette never reached a point they didn’t leave a greasy print. It was busy after 9am so we had to walk around to find a free table. The fresh fruit was good, but ran out before end of service. The waffles required queuing, as there were only two machines. ||Staff were mixed. For example on arrival we asked about food options. It was late on New Year’s Day, so the receptionist said only fast food was available in the area (they have no catering or room service outside the breakfast buffet). I explained we are vegetarian and she shrugged and said that was bad luck, offering no other assistance. Yet we found that we could order an array of food options to be delivered via uber eats. Likewise, despite booking as a family they made no attempt to give us two rooms that were near each other. At another point I went to use the toilets in reception to find a male member of staff cleaning in the ladies (no signage warned of this). He gestured for me to use the disabled toilet instead. So I did. But just a few minutes later he used a key to override the lock and walked in on me in the disabled toilet. That was weird, but he seemed surprised, so I’d like to think it wasn’t intentional. The cleaners made up the rooms nicely each day.||So overall, it was okay, but even with premier inn expectations (rather than expecting more from a Hilton brand) there were definitely things they could have done to improve our experience.
