We got stuck paying nearly full in-season rate when booking a last-minute weekend trip to see the family recently, and figured, instead of paying over $200 to stay in a fleabag let's splurge and spend over $300 to stay in the Hampton.
Because the Hampton is very, very reliable. Clean, comfortable, safe, decent breakfast, two pools with jacuzzi, a few amenities (their cookies, a few free appetizers, a smallish bar open at the outdoor pool), has good WiFi (once you get in - there's a bizarre login sequence that is wrong on the room card, FYI), with good DirecTV without the annoying hotel guide wrapper most hotels have. You can set the room air on continuous fan without changing the temperature, which is something I value very much for the white noise. And it's pretty quiet - good modern soundproofing for the most part. Very family-friendly with lots of families with small children about.
I have some quibbles here and there: they need to get the smokers away from the entrances, there were a few details of housekeeping that weren't quite up to par, the minifridge and microwave faced the beds so there was extra noise and electronics glare, they forgot the rollaway bed, and a few other details. So not perfect, but...very, very reliable. The Hampton brand is pretty solid, and given the very low standards for the Cape and Route 28 in general, this is a gem.
I do wish we could get a better rate.
