We had room 101 which has a queen bed and two beds. The view from this room is spectacular, with the black sand beach and bay in full view. The lanai was perfect, the kitchen was well maintained, and the layout let all the breeze in to keep it all cool. Checkin was easy, and the owners gave clear instructions before we arrived about late check in which we saw many people take advantage of. We would definitely stay here again, but if we had a smaller group we might spring for the premium rooms in the lower building.

We wanted the experience of being in Hāna and feeling and hearing the mountain. We got that. The place is a bit dated but I wasn't expecting luxury, I was expecting nature and nature I got. I enjoyed listening to the ocean, I have mixed feelings about the roosters but it was nostalgic. The view of the ocean is amazing and so is the sunrise. Not swimmable. Go with an open mind if you decide to go.

The facility and the grounds are breathtaking. The view is absolutely gorgeous of a black sand and pebble Beach so you can knock that must see site off your list just by staying at the hotel. The room was large and comfortable with a full kitchen and a very large balcony Looking over the ocean. Also a small patio in front that we did not go to. We hung out mostly on the back balcony enjoying that gorgeous view. The hotel has very individualized rooms so one is not like the other which you can see if you search for available rooms on the website. Our room was 101 and I would have to say that it was tastefully worn. Not exactly in tiptop shape, but probably not a lot different than your house. The mattress on this particular trip was not the most comfortable kind of lumpy and sinking in the middle, but that’s the only bad thing we can say about the place. I definitely would recommend staying here, and making sure to stay the night in Hana and not just try to drive here do everything and drive back to the other side of the island that’s way too much and you’re not going to enjoy it. You will read on the website that there is not air conditioning, that is true, and you don’t need it.

This was one of the wonderful experience. This resort is located right on the pacific and by the black beach. What a great view - you can spent countless hours seating on the balcony. Highly recommend. There are a lot of food truck located within few miles.

They think of every detail to make sure your stay feels like home. Very clean, bed is cozy, and porch has a great view. Not many eating places but the full kitchen is an added bonus.

If a generous friend gave you the keys to their beach condo for the weekend and Hana Kai was the result, you would be thrilled with what you found. Yes, the complex is a bit noisy. Yes, things are worn. And yes, there is some deferred maintenance. But there is a LOT to love about Hana Kai. The location, the breezes, the sunrises ....|Since few of us have said friend and instead we are paying 500+ per night rental fee, the rating loses a star and I understand why some may even deduct two. Admittedly, there are not a lot of options in Hana so how much all the nuisance items bother you is kind of personal. If you choose Hana Kai, do have your expectations more at the level of a well-worn friend's condo in a glorious location.

My wife and I stayed in this small resort for 2 nights in Hana. The view from the room was incredible overlooking a small beach which was a short walk to watch the sunrise. The staff was very friendly, and the rooms are large and clean. There is no AC so it was a little hot around bed time but with the screens on the door and balcony it cooled down very quickly. Everyone was very respectful and it was a peaceful place to spend two nights.

Google
I absolutely loved this resort! Everything was perfect, starting with the clear instructions for late check-in guests. The location of the resort, the room with a fully equipped kitchen, the spacious beds ideal for a family of four, and the amazing balcony in the corner unit where we stayed were all exceptional. If I have the chance to visit again, I will definitely choose to stay here!

Yelp
The perfect Hana stay. Arguably the best way to do the road to Hana. No need to drive home exhausted, in the dark, on sketchy roads. Hana Kai maui is right on the water- perfect for watching sunset and sunrise. The rooms are lovely and have the perfect island getaway feel. Falling asleep and waking up to the sounds of the waves crashing brings me LIFE! The employees were so kind and friendly. When we had to reschedule at first due to poor weather they were understanding and helpful. This was my second time staying here and I just can't say enough nice things! I will be coming back again and again.

Yelp
Beautiful property. Right on the beach.. The room we stayed in had alot of nostalgic surfing pictures. It was very clean. Quiet. Did not want to leave.

Yelp
Everything was perfect about this place. Staff was awesome and friendly, location was awesome and the unit we had was clean and had the perfect views. We didn't want to leave it. So peaceful listening to the ocean and waking to the beautiful sunrises. We will definitely stay here again next time we are in Hana.

Yelp
My family absolutely loved staying here! We loved the view from the patio. Listening to the ocean at night was so calming and relaxing. One night was just not enough! We will be back this Summer.

Yelp
We have company and came for one night instead of a single day RT. We ve been to Hana Kai before but in in a different unit. So we have a end unit, ground floor. Clear view of the harbor from the couch Or Lanai. Very nice with coffee. The kitchen has every thing I needed for Italian dinner. I brought foil. Coffee supplied for one pot. It s very clean and nicely furnished. One bathroom, one full bedroom and two couch beds. The couch beds were more bed than couch and worked Out very well. Best view at sunrise. We would return

Yelp
Stayed in room 101 for 5 nights. Hana Kai Maui has no air conditioning, no pool and no daily room service. I had to take out our trash and change out our linens. Room 101 is at the end of the building. The drive to check in was below our room. This hotel has many people who only stay one night. We had cars and lights shining in our room until late in the night. Terrible room if you value your sleep. To top it off, the room above us was under construction for a day. The manager who was extremely nice and professional said she would provide a credit but not sure how much. And truly I would have preferred a quieter room than a credit. Knowing we were going to be here for 5 nights not sure why we weren't moved to another room? Especially since the majority of the rooms are one night rentals. Our mistake is that we booked through hotel.com which switched us to VRBO and VRBO specified a room number. We thought we were renting directly from an owner but that doesn't seem to be the case. If you are staying here book directly. Make sure you are not in room 101.

Yelp
Stayed here for a weekend. Prices are okay. Views are awesome. Right by the beach so when you sleep you can hear the ocean. They have a lanai (a balcony) so you can sit and have coffee while you enjoy the view. One of the staff are friendly and let us know about the deep off box to put the key in if we left early in the morning. Parking maybe limited if you arrive late in the evening.. The room we stayed in had a queen sized bed 2 small mini refrigerators a nice cooking area. Just enough for a couple. There's no tv...

M N.

Yelp
We reserved condo unit 204 over looking the ocean fir 3/23/2022. It has kitchen, one bed room, a living room with a pull out queen sized bed. We have paid, after tax, six hundred twenty three and thirty cents US dollars. For the amount that we paid, we expected the place to be worth that much a night. However, our dish washer was out of order, the refrigerator was aged, it's doors (freezer and refrigerator were rusty (see pictures) and the toilet tissues dispenser was missing a cross bar to hold the toilet tissues. The bathroom's cleanliness was so so. I really want to ask for the refund because I did not get the quality of service that I had paid high price for (more than six hundred US dollars). The road to Hana is beautiful, you definitely need to come to visit. However if you expect reasonable or cheap hotels on this side of the island, you will be disappointed.

Yelp
Hana Kai was fantastic- what a picturesque spot on the coast of Hana bay. The staff were gracious (and the woman checking us in was fluent in Japanese which was a delight). Sleeping with the sea breeze and sound of the waves was heavenly.

Yelp
My wife, two sons (12 yrs., 10 yrs.), and I enjoyed a peaceful 2 night stay at this condo. Listening to the waves crashing on the surf and enjoying coffee on the lanai next to the kitchen were memorable. We stayed in Room #5 (Kaahumanu), which is next to the ocean. This unit is in the lower building (same as the reception desk) on the right side of the top floor (near the koi pond). The interior of the unit was clean and well-decorated with a kitchen area that had plenty of utensils. In August, it was a bit difficult to sleep soundly on the 2nd night due to high humidity (dew point was oppressive at 72 degrees) and a lack of air conditioning. But the spectacular view and peaceful setting for dining outdoors on the lanai were great. Check-in was from 2pm to 8pm. The reception desk allows guests to do their own laundry for $10 (and will provide laundry detergent). Also, the Hana Kai Maui permits guests to rent out beach towels at no charge, but does not provide beach chairs or umbrellas. Although Hana has 2 general stores (which close by 7pm or 7:30pm) for basic items like eggs and milk, I would strongly recommend picking up bottled water, juices, snacks, toothpaste, or ground coffee in Kahului at the Walmart, Safeway, or Costco there before taking the Road to Hana. Overall, we enjoyed our stay at the Hana Kai Maui. Since the individual units vary in quality, I would check the reviews before reserving a specific unit. That said, if you cannot live without air conditioning, you may want to skip an overnight stay in Hana.

Yelp
* price: $300 per night. Since there aren't that many places in this area, you have to pay a bit more for a decent place. It is half of what you would pay at Travaasa Hana. 3+ star. * Location: Hana bay, Waikoloa black sand beach! 5 star. * Accomodation: apartment condo type. Each unit has kitchen with full supply, bathroom with tub, bed rooms. Some has loft, some has living room. All unit has lanai with ocean view. Free wifi, no TV and A/C though. 4+ star. * Motif: Hawaiian style, clean. The ground is well kept with koi ponds and water falls. 4 star. * Service: friendly. 4+ star. It is 4+ star for the hotel (for their class in the area, not comparing to Grand Walea, Ritz, Hyatt, etc.) For unit #103, it is about 3 star. We stayed here last year and were in unit #202. Since we loved the area so much so decided to visit here again. Unfortunately, the other unit was not available. We got unit#103 as the only one vacant for one night. Overall, Hana Kai Maui is the same as before with the same staff. It is very quaint and has the best view of Hana bay. Everything in our unit works. However, because it is located on the first floor of upper building, you do not have the full panaromic view of the bay. The ceiling is low. It is a one bedroom apartment so your bedroom does not get trade wind. The night we stayed here, it was rainy and warm with no wind... so even though we left all patio doors ( bed room and livin room) opened, it was impossible to sleep in 80 degree humidity! Also, the bedroom has lanai opened to the parking lot... so you will hear everything from the street! I still like this place and still recommend it to my peeps but would recommend to book early and try to get either 2nd floor or those units in the lower building. They also have new policy for noise due to so many complaints on social media. So, you probably will not have problem with noise at night but you also will not be able to watch movie on your device without headset... and no music or party after 8 PM! Tips: Book early for and floor unit or the lower building (Ocean front). Stock your fridge. Make sure to put food away. There are many ants here! Bring headset if you are going to watch movie on your devices. You can get fruits and supplies at Hana Ranch store about 5 min into town. There are also some local restaurants and food truck in town but close early. There is a small gas station in town. The unit does supply cooking utensil, cooking oil with some spices, coffee, towels, soap and shampoo, and hair dryer.

Yelp
I found this place on VRBO (Vacation Rentals by Owner) aka HomeAway phone app. It was on the pricey side at around $300 per night. There's not much available around Hana so it's to be expected. These units are individual condos with studios, one bedroom, and two-bedroom units all with a view of the ocean. We stayed on a second floor studio. The kitchen had all the amenities. It was clean and spacious with high ceilings and a loft. There was ample parking. We really enjoyed watching the sunrise over the water from our bed. It was amazing!! Totally worth staying the night for. We do advise bringing groceries as there isn't much available in Hana and what is available is quite expensive for what you get. We ended up eating at a food truck for dinner and a walk up breakfast place on the bay in the morning. We took a walk along the very rocky black sand beach in the morning. We were the only ones on the beach and it was nice.

Yelp
We stayed here for 3 nights and really enjoyed our stay. We stayed in unit 106 and it was clean and even though we didn't have a direct view of the ocean, we were able to see it from our balcony. Above all, we really enjoyed the quiet mornings and the fact that we were able to see the sunrise every day right from our balcony. If you want a hotel with tons of service and staff, don't come here but if you want a quiet weekend getaway, absolutely come here. It was the perfect place for us. Also, a comment about their shower gel, shampoo and conditioner, they use a Hawaiian brand Ola, which felt amazing and not like the usual low-quality hotel shampoo and conditioner. You can tell that they have put thought into everything in their units. We would definitely return. The only reason I am giving 4 stars is because I thought the prices were a bit high.

Yelp
LOVED our stay here after a busy day sightseeing. Stayed in room 101. It is the ground floor of the back building but has an EXCELLENT view of the bay and black sand beach. The place was furnished well and had a great floor plan. Kitchen window also opens up for pass through to lanai dining area. Built in sofas also convert to two twin sleepers. All doors have floor to ceiling sliders for privacy, view, and screens for the breeze. The kitchen was fully stocked and allowed us to prepare a nice meal of Maui beef steaks, local salad greens and wine all from the small store up the street.it was nice to play games with our kids on the lanai, listen to the waves, relax, and reconnect. We knew ahead about the thin walls from reading prior reviews and just used our "ocean waves"iPhone app to drown out the neighbor noise and had no issues sleeping. The front desk lady was super friendly and even offered us a papaya from her personal home when we left. It was appreciated and delicious and by the way. Mahalo!

Yelp
Ok so I didn't get to stay here but I performed a wedding for a couple who were staying there. They loved the place and the grounds were beautiful and peaceful. An excellent choice for a sweet and private wedding and honeymoon in Hana.

Yelp
Heaven on Earth! The place was breath taking. we stayed in a 1 bedroom for 4 nights and had the best time. Plan to come back for sure. Hana is slow, slow, slow.. and relaxing. Great place to stay, clean, friendly and pleasant. You can buy food at the local store or bring it when you drive from the airport and make it you self in the kitchen or the BBQ area.

Yelp
I absolutely loved Hana Kai! It is pricey, and our oceanfront condo cost nearly $370 per night. However, it was worth it. We stayed in room #1 which is directly in front of the black sand beach. The place is artfully decorated with framed vintage Hawaii posters. The entire side of the condo was a window giving us full ocean views from each part of the condo. I felt as though we were practically on top of the water. The kitchen had all the amenities needed to cook our breakfasts and dinners, as there were few restaurants nearby, and our condo had the best view anyway. There is a large porch in the front with the same amazing views where we had breakfast each morning. There is a barbecue area just below, and an herb garden where we picked herbs for cooking. I enjoyed the line of scented bath gets, lotions and shampoo in the shower. It is a perfect spot to relax, check out the view, go for beach walks, and it is a short drive to waterfalls and other attractions. The Hana Kai was a nice reward following the perilous Road to Hana!

Yelp
Stayed in #106 in December 2016. As one of the more affordable units, it did not disappoint. We had one of the obstructed view balconies, but I still found it to be very nice. Check-in and out process were as easy as can be. Rooms were clean and tidy. The restaurants in town close between 7:30 to 8:00 PM so if you're looking for food, take that into consideration. Otherwise you can just bring your own and take advantage of the kitchenette in your room. I highly recommend walking down to the beach to see the sunrise - well worth the early waking time. It'd be a waste not to as you're practically there already. If everyone parks correctly, there should be enough spots for everyone.

Yelp
We stayed at this lovely gem of a place in Hana, after hours spent negotiating the hairpin turns of the Road to Hana. The unit in which we stayed was simply gorgeous: classic furniture with an Asian flair, sliders which opened out onto a spacious, ocean-facing deck, galley kitchen with everything one could need. The management pays attention to some of the finer things in life; they have a shoes off policy and quiet hours politely posted. The only thing that was less than perfect with the reception when we arrived. But that was at 6 PM and maybe the desk clerk was getting tired.

Yelp
Killer view! Friendly service! My partner, son, and self stayed for three days. It was great having a kitchen and nice porch to enjoy eating dinner together. Only two complaints. The dishwasher did work and the bed was way too soft. I think it had a 6 inch mattress pad and I almost took it off the second night.

Yelp
I don't really know what to say except I'm extremely underwhelmed. There was major issues with the manager at the check-in office. We were made to feel incredibly unwelcome. It was so bad that I considered driving all the way back to Paia and not even staying there. It was a huge bummer. After much discussion we moved on but still feel incredibly underwhelmed. It was a huge waste of money. It was about $360. We stayed in unit 103 and it was quite depressing. Everything looks like it's been stolen from a morgue or a garage sale. The appliances are the cheapest you could possibly find. The paint was dark brown circa 1970. You can very clearly hear everybody on the property including the people above us. It is a old wooden building with no soundproofing. Be aware no air-conditioning and the fan was broken. There was also no hot water. A day later the very nice Handyman showed up to fix the water problem but seeing as we had only 40 minutes left before checkout and everyone was still waking up and in their pajamas it made no sense... The view ofHāna Bay was nice but the septic system in the yard was an eyesore. Kinda felt like faulty towers... Next time I'll save money and camp.

Yelp
Now some units require a two night minimum, but others don't. There aren't many places to stay in Hana, but I would definitely recommend this one. #107 is a 1BR place that was the perfect retreat after a trek on the Road to Hana. It was very spacious, clean, and above all, homey. The deck provides may only grant partial views of the ocean, but it lets you take in the ocean breeze. Wifi is an added bonus. The staff here is incredibly courteous and knowledgeable about the area. The rates at the time were comparable to a night at a great hotel in Lahaina, but for a bigger space. Key drop off boxes allow you to check out as early as you please.

Yelp
ALOHA INDEED! Indescribable location. We had a late night check-in & the sound of those waves in the dark: Magical! I felt like I might fall asleep w/the tide coming in & wake up in the middle of the ocean - you are literally THAT CLOSE to the beach. Booking the room = easy www.hanakaimaui.com Communication = fab / hotel contacted us the day before our trip to alert us to a landslide on the road to Hana that had the road blocked Check-in = she was so sweet Room = fun layout /cute peep-through area between kitchen & lanai, as well as between the master and living room. Air-conditioning = none but also un-needed on our Mid-March stay Bathroom = the most yummy island smelling hair products Space = enough room for our whole family Fresh Flowers = on the table (you'll touch them to confirm, but they are real) Grounds = snazzy / koi ponds / well kept Curtains = little thin / not quite big enough for the window, but what fool wants to sleep-in when you have just found paradise ! Overall = top notch stay Hana Kai Maui will forever hold a special place in my heart. If I were on a honeymoon, writing a book, planning a family reunion, or hiding from the police: I would book this remote/ relaxed/ recharging room again in a heartbeat. I will forever be looking for an excuse to come back! Lov'd our first night in Maui.

Yelp
This place came highly recommend by our friends who grew up on Maui so we knew this had to be the real deal and it was! We arrived around noon hoping that we might have our room available, no such luck! No worries, we were prepared and were told to come back in a few hours but in the mean time they pointed us to few local places to grab lunch and relax and gave us a map of nearby places of interest so that was pretty cool. We spent the time grabbing lunch, checking out the general store and heading to Wainapana state park! Perfect way to explore and sightsee! Back to Hana Kai, Overall their entire place is so tranquil! After all, it's literally right on the black beach! I believe there's around 17 different types of rooms to choose from but they can fill up quickly depending upon when you're going and what's going on in Hana. We arrived back well after 3pm and were delighted by our cozy little unit. It was an ocean front studio unit (Kaumaka, #102) which was perfect for hubby and myself. One queen bed with sliding doors to see out into the ocean. Granted, there is another building in front of ours, the roaring sounds of the ocean sure made it feel like we were right "on" the shore! A small little kitchenette complete with an oven, full size refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker and all dishes, glasses and utensils along with cooking ware! My only minimal complaint was a rather hard mattress but maybe it's because I'm used to a cushy pillow top mattress. Regardless, it didn't keep me from passing out each night from exhaustion! Bathroom was split into shower/toilet area with a separate area with a sink/closet. Nice and spacious! The folded "swan" towels were a nice touch! Fluffy towels and (full size) shampoos (to use) were also pretty awesome! Sadly, we only had 2 of our 3 nights booked here but I sure wish we had a week or more! Oh well, back to reality! Thank you, Hana Kai for our mini stay-cation while we island hopped for a long weekend! Check this place out! It will provide some much needed Aloha love after the long Hana drive! *Perks: fresh flowers in every room, gourmet coffee samples, fresh breakfast if you choose (addt'l cost), Myers soap ( love that!) Ample parking and a super friendly staff!

Yelp
Clearly this place does not care about safety. Downed trees, flash flood watches, closed roads, and they refuse to refund our stay since we could not make it out. This was for one night only. Very bad business practices. We would even love to experience on another day, but they would rather take our money for what? To teach us a lesson? I believe that putting the emergency responders at risk was not worth forcing a trip to Hana during a Kona low pressure storm. Full disclosure: I am speaking with community leaders and legal representatives. This is beyond getting a refund. This is to a point where a Maui business is promoting the idea that you should travel in harsh road conditions to make it to your reservation. Any other local business would simply refund or reschedule not force you to take a chance. The representative said the weather was not bad. Then why did the county close the road to get there? We were supposed to chance the weather getting better and getting stuck in Hana? Does this seem like it was the right thing to do? I think this is exactly the opposite of what people want businesses to do. Do the right thing. Understand that the roads were a mess (flooding on the westside) and reschedule, but instead they would rather care about $300. This is principle. Shame on you. Shame on your attitude of the whole situation. You are not a part of the solution, you are a part of the tourism issue that Maui and the Island of Hawaii have. You value $ over the safety and respect of the island. Shame. I have cross posted this review with pictures from the COUNTY OF MAUI facebook that urge people to prepare for the storm.

Yelp
Wow what a gem. We rented it sight unseen on vacation rental by owner and we were not disappointed. Although we got one of the partial view rooms it was so incredible. The unit was large and spacious and have been updated. I love that Asian touches with the sliding shutters and the window opening from the kitchen out onto the lanai. Service was excellent at the front desk everything was very friendly. Unit was meticulously clean. It's a short walk to everywhere. I highly suggest it wish we could've stayed longer

Yelp
We decided to split up our Road to Hana and stayed in Hana for 1 night. Absolutely loved our stay at Hana Kai Maui! It is a quaint place consisted of a couple of building on a hill. You can see exactly what type of view each room has on the website which is super helpful is picking out the one you want vs what you want to pay. The rates are reasonable given the meticulous upkeep here and the location. Easy walk to get delicious Thai food for dinner. We ordered the "room service" breakfast which consisted of banana bread, fruit and yogurt. Delish! Sure the Travasa down the road is fancier which may be what you want. But people like Hana because of this quiet sleepy little quaint town and I think a place like that may not match the feel. And you get much better views and ocean access here! Woke up really early next morning and walked out on the black sand beach right out front. The sun rise was spectacular and not to be missed!

Yelp
Hana Kai has a lot of great things going for it. Parking and location are good- just a few miles away from many Hana highlights (red sand beach, hamoa etc.). There are not many places to eat in Hana, so having a kitchen is awesome. Overall, the units are spacious and provide all the basics. This place is pretty expensive for what you get, many of the lights didn't work in our unit. The appliances are fine, but some things like a pan and strainer were broken. Another issue is the noise- you literally can hear everything through the walls so hope for quiet neighbors.

Jessica F.

Yelp
We stayed for one night at Hana Kai and it was one of the most enjoyable parts of our visit to Maui. The staff at Hana Kai went above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable. The woman at the front desk offered to store our luggage after we checked out so we could go explore the Pipiwai trail (had we been thinking, we'd have reserved a second night and explored Hana a bit longer). The trade winds blow through at night, so we left the windows open and fell asleep to the sound of the waves crashing and the breeze blowing. Sunrise from our balcony was magical. Truly a wonderful experience at Hana Kai. Next time we're out that way, we will definitely return!

Yelp
I spent Christmas 2014 here at room 106 to split the Road to Hana into 2 days and had one of the most peaceful sleep I had in years, with the sound of the wind and waves crashing into Hana Bay. Tastefully decorated room and clean bedsheets, ocean views from the lanai, and even their own line of refreshing coconut-based soap products. There's a full kitchen (yes, they have a wine bottle opener!) where I was able to make breakfast omelette. The fridge was nice for storing lunch the next day, though somewhat difficult to open due to how it's oriented. There's direct access to Hana Bay for a morning stroll and it's a short drive away from the trailhead to not-to-be-missed Red Sand Beach. Very easy online booking and friendly and helpful staff. Also, there's a key drop-off for early check-out, which helped me have a 7 am start in the Pipiwai trail. I had a fantastic time "unplugging" here! MINOR quips: all windows and doors have to be inspected thoroughly to ensure privacy; the kitchen lacked a chopping board; bed is not very sturdy; the front office is somewhat difficult to find; wifi signal is not very strong and the parking lot spaces could get cramped. Negligible concerns if you're already in aloha-mode.

Yelp
We Stayed here in February. This time we got a two bedroom upstairs unit and even if it's just me and my husband I want to rent this one again. The views are awesome the kitchen is awesome it's just totally awesome and worth every bit of money.

Yelp
The setting on Hana Bay is just divine! I rented one of the pricier units, $300 per night, right on the beach. It was well-appointed and I prepared many good meals with the provided cookware. The bed was very comfy with quality linens. Coffee was replenished daily, and the staff was so unobtrusive, I hardly noticed them at all. Within walking distance of everything you need to see in Hana, including the clothing-optional Kaihalulu Beach. I bumped the Hana Kai down a star because the shower in my room really needed an upgrade. The head sits at face level, and the valves are very sensitive. Magical!

Yelp
Spent two nights in the Ocean-front #1 condo. The view was exquisite, the sounds from the waves even better. I had so many things planned to do, but this place 'rocked' me to sleep like a baby. So I slept, and slept - I must have needed it. Wanted to stay here longer but... no availability.

Yelp
All I can say is "WOW"!! This place is amazing! If you visit you have to stay in room 5. It is perfect from the view to the exquisite furniture to the balcony. Everything is so clean & the room is beautifully designed. The balcony off the master bedroom over looks the black sand beach & the sound of the ocean is so clear it feels like your bed is right on the beach. The only downside is that we are only staying one night, as this was a last minute decision after a day trip on the Road to Hana. Best decision ever! You have to check out this hidden treasure!

Yelp
This is TRUE PARADISE, like I've never experienced before. Staying here was literally my own personal slice of paradise pie, tucked away in a corner of sleepy Hana village, on the Eastern side of Maui. Sounds liek the beginning of a romance novel, and it might as well be this place is so amazing. Private black sand beach. I hear they do massages on your balcony, for only $55/hr. Falling asleep to the sounds of waves crashing and moonlight. Awakening to birds chirping and the ocean breeze thru the palm leaves. Seriously this place oozed charm, romance, and total relazation. PROs: -studio was $238 (taxes included)/night WALK UP. literally showed up at 10pm begging for a room. -studio was bigger than all our hotels in Oahu and Maui. Full kitchen included, fully stocked with dishware and cooking stuff, even a brita. -Eco soaps and philosophy. -Private beach -BBQ on the common area lanai where you can grill what you buy from the general store (walking distance) When I arrived, i read thru the entire guest book and everyone falls in love with this gem. Full grown men gushing about the moonlight. It's THAT romantic. Definitely glad we split up the road to Hana from the road back from Hana and got to stay here. I NEED to get back here stat!

Yelp
Beautiful on Hana bay! It's a decent option if you don't want to pay the ridiculous prices of Travaasa Hana. Although the prices here are also ridiculous for the quality of the building(s)... but it seems your options are limited in Hana. We stayed in room 205, in the mauka building, for one night. The room itself was actually clean, nicely outfitted, and comfortable. There's a nice high ceiling with two fans to keep the air circulating. We had a good view of the waves crashing onto the black gravel beach portion of Hana Bay... it's not a nice swimming beach, but it is nice to see/hear the waves crashing from your room. My complaint and the reason for 2 stars is that the floors creak and the walls are super thin. You can literally hear everything that's going on in the other rooms, in the building and outside. You can hear your neighbors conversations and you can hear them coming and going. Also, the free wifi doesn't really work.. and you're not going to get reception. So expect to be off the grid while you're here, ie. no Yelping! to find local eats =) For $250/night, I'd unfortunately expect a little better. That being said, I knew of this potential when I booked, as it's mentioned in many of the reviews (on tripadvisor).

Yelp
I've been to Maui about a dozen times, but this last trip decided to spend a few days in Hana rather than just visiting for a day. Best. Decision. Ever. Hana is the epitome of a sleepy little town, and the Hana Kai Resort is a wonderful place to stay! We were in unit 203 which had a modern kitchen and a fantastic view of the black sand beach/ocean. We could hear the waves crashing in all day long... paradise! Our unit had a very comfortable bed & couch, and a great lanai for lounging. The condo was clean and well maintained. The bathroom was small but it was more than doable for a short stay. It's near the main road so you get a bit of road noise, but generally is not an issue unless you're a very light sleeper (then bring earplugs!). Because this is on the rainy side of the island, expect to see a few critters (bugs) that make their way into the unit. They have daily cleaning service so the little buggers are kept to a minimum. Also plan on cooking in the condo if you're staying more than a couple of days - options for eating out are roadside stands or 2 mediocre restaurants (Hana Ranch or Hotel Hana). The farmers market is a supposedly a wonderful spot to get your groceries; though it was closed during our stay (I'm assuming due to weather as it rained for most of the 3 days we were there). The resort is right in the heart of town, so restaurants and beaches are within walking distance. If I stay in Hana again, which is the plan (!), I will definitely consider staying here again.

Yelp
This place is a gem in Hana and actually priced pretty reasonably compared with nearby accomodations. Every suite has an ocean view and a sizable lanai within earshot of the Hana Bay waves. It's accessible to the beach with some small waves, but the rocks are pretty rough. Decent size kitchen with a full frige stocked with a brita and utensils, stemware, and some great Maui coffee. Plenty of closet space, some games and books in each unit, and contrary to some of the reviews, I found our bathroom to be quite modern and nice. Beach towel service from the front desk, and some high-end shampoo/conditioner/soap that's locally made. Service staff was friendly and professional, booking was a breeze, as was checking in and out. Parking is a bit tight and the noise carries given the amphitheater-like design, so please be courteous. Also of note, there is no A/C, but I was never uncomfortable given the ventilation and ocean breeze. Not sure if it's standard, but our unit (103) had an umbrella and styrofoam cooler that both came in handy. There's a small programmable safe for your valuables, and lots of closet space.

Yelp
Ok things to know. Hana Kai is an affordable (for Maui) condo hotel. I booked the least expensive room. Here are things I wish I'd known prior to booking, starting with the positive. Pros: 1) partial ocean view is just fine. 2) room is clean and comfortable. 3) little lanai with table and chairs is welcome. 4) bed is comfortable 5) bath products are amazing! 6) girl at check-in was nice Cons: 1) front door is slat style which doesn't feel very private (don't care so much about that) or secure (care about that). 2) bathroom doors are also slatted, so a little awkward if you aren't really, really close with your roommate. 3) paper thin walls = no romance 4) squeaky bed = no romance 5) window curtains provide absolutely no light control nor privacy, they don't even completely over the windows. Not everyone on vacation wants to watch the sun rise = no sleeping in. 6) gardeners and other folks may be working right outside said window with partial cover, giving them full view of your bed = no romance 7) paper thin ceiling, (neighbors rearranging furniture? at 6am penetrates ear plugs) = no sleeping in (though not hotel's fault) 8) not the most customer friendly type place. Hard to explain: lots of little notices about how you need to secure your valuables and tons on what not to do= makes you feel a little unwelcome. For only one night this place is fine.

Yelp
I want to start off this review by making the suggestion to stay somewhere, anywhere, in Hana overnight so that you don't pack your schedule with trying to hike around all day and drive back west in the dark. I shutter to be on that road at night. If you do stay, there aren't many options; especially if you are only staying 1 night. The Hana Kai is one of the few places that offer 1 night stays (at a premium of course - I think I was charged an additional $15). The building is nice and the location is great. My "ocean view" room, 103 Helani, wasn't really a direct view. I was in the second building up and was blocked from actually seeing the black sand beach. I did see water though. You can only check in and out between 10AM and 8 PM. After that, no one is in the main office. They actually frown upon you using the grill as well if they are not there, though we were not kicked out per se. All of the upholstery in my rooms were clean and it looks like they take a lot of care is making sure everything stays of good quality. I didn't feel icky using any of the plates or appliances as I sometimes do in hotels. The only downside was that there were ants in the kitchen! I didn't want to leave anything out, even if it was in a package. For the price you are paying, you probably want to stay in a 5 star resort, but with the limited options in Hana, you can only get so much. At least it's not the Travasa (or however you spell it) at $500/night.

Yelp
My mom stayed here about ten years ago and recommended it. We stayed 3 nights on our honeymoon and enjoyed it a lot. It's the closest place I've seen to a beach (careful though it's a rock beach so watch your step and don't expect to lounge). The room we were in is really nice with a king bed and full kitchen, although next time I might try to get a bedroom facing the ocean because only our living room faced the ocean. Plan out where you'll eat because most places close pretty early. The missing star is only because parking is limited (if you get to the room past 8 there's hopefully a spot left, we were lucky not sure where you're supposed to go if all the spots are taken) and because we were right next to a cleaning closet that was open all day long. Also it said they had board games but there was only monopoly, not fun for just two people. Overall, I'd come again and recommend it. Pretty place.

Yelp
We recently stayed at the Hana Kai (room 3, Keanini) for two nights of our honeymoon across Maui and Kauai. It was by far our favorite place in all of Hawaii. The room itself was tastefully decorated in island decor and the pics on the website didn't show that new granite countertops had been put in. But who really cares about fixtures (if you do, go stay at the Westin or St. Regis on Kauai). You come to Hana for something completely different. The location and view were unbeatable. The slow pace of life in Hana relaxes you along with the sound of the surf and water washing against the black stones on the beach. Check out the Kaihalulu red sand beach, hamoa beach, waiapanapa state park black sand beaches during the day. Get something to eat at Nutcharee's thai for lunch and get some steaks and wine from Hana Ranch store and grill out on the nice gas stove and eat facing the ocean. At night, stargaze... it's unbelievable.

Yelp
So glad we booked this place as our 2 night, 3 day base for exploring eastern Maui in the middle of honeymoon. Based on the reviews and tips, we booked Room #1, Waikoloa, which was a top floor corner unit with views of Hana Bay and its black sand beach. Used the downstairs grill for dinner both nights which was a welcome relief from all the restaurants for the first half of our trip. We fell asleep listening to the waves crash. Felt like our own little private slice of heaven. I would go back in a heartbeat if we ever get the opportunity.

Yelp
This hotel is the best value I have ever had at any place I have stay at on any vacation. Almost makes me not want to rate this review and help keep it a hidden gem. We stayed in a studio, with a full kitchen. The studio has a nice ocean view, the sound of the ocean is prevalent in the room and most rooms have an ocean view. The hotel is situated right on a black sand beach and I am told the waves are perfect for surfing. They looked perfect! The hotel has no TV or phones, they do offer free Wifi. Having no TV is very nice. Hana is very slooooooooow. We loved it, but you must not expect shopping and glitz and glamor. Hana is about nature and the old world. Slow down and stay a few days, just don't let the vines grow over you. Enjoy. The road all the way around is the route to take.

Yelp
We LOVED Hana Kai! My husband and I wanted to take two full days to drive the Road to Hana (and around the backside of Haleakala) without being rushed, so we needed somewhere to stay in Hana.I'm so glad my husband was able to make a reservation here because it was unforgettable! Hana Kai is perfectly located and easy to find. Check in was easy (although the check in office is down the hill from main parking lot) and the staff friendly. The "rooms" are like little apartments (and honestly larger than the tiny Ohana we live in in Kihei, ha!). We had a full kitchen with just about every appliance, dish, utensil, etc. you could possibly need. Large living space and bedroom with tons of charm, character and history. Everything was sparkling clean. Extra amenities (blankets, toilet paper, pillows) in the cupboards. And games! We pulled down the Scrabble and played a game on the covered porch after dinner. The had several informative books on the coffee table with everything you need to know about the accommodations and the surrounding areas. No AC units but was comfortable enough with just the windows open. And what a terrific experience sleeping with the sounds of the ocean outside! Wi-Fi was a blessing (even if a little shoddy at times) as I had no cell service to speak of. The views are phenomenal. I think I spent 90% of our stay out on the balcony, I could not get enough. An absolutely stunning view of the bay! I cannot say enough nice things about Hana Kai. We can't wait to come back!

Yelp
5 stars overall! We stayed in unit 2 which is a studio with a balcony with a view of the beach! It's basically a private balcony as the other balconies on this building are off to the side & out of view, though the people walking to the beach from this resort can see you. Unit 2 had a Murphy bed, but don't let that fool you because it was MUCH comfier then the bed we had in our condo in Kihei...the Egyptian cotton sheets are silky & the pillows were heavenly! The kitchen in this unit is small but very nice! The bathroom was alright, they had a neat glass tile shower but I didn't love that there was a window in the washroom though it had frosted glass shutters.... As mentioned in another review there are bugs in Hana, more bugs then in Kihei or Lahania, so there is a chance that some might get into the unit but they keep it super clean! We didn't miss a TV, there was internet...I don't think I'd be able to stay in Hana for more then 1-2 days though as I didn't love the food & the town itself was very slow & sleepy - that's just me though & I loved the hiking in Hana....

Yelp
The was a beautiful place. The grounds were beautiful, the room was clean, the pool was heated, the views from the hot tub were amazing. The only thing I would say is that they DO have free wifi as advertised but you have to be in the main library area to use it. We were okay without it because of our iphones. We really wanted it to find places to eat etc and look up maps and stuff. But we got around just fine with out it -- this paragraph is just a note because it is advertised free wifi, so I wanted to clarify. We did have ONE other issue. In the room guide it says there is sodas and water and juices in the refrigerator that are free and get restocked daily. We only drank the juice, but they restocked with more soda instead of juice. We called and asked to get the juice instead and it was quite an ordeal. 3 phone calls and a visit in person to the front desk because housekeeping swore they replaced the juices. Anyway.... not that big of a deal, just not that friendly of service. It also would have been nice if they had congradulated us on our wedding since we were there for our honeymoon but the welcome card in our room said Mr Humphrey and guest....

Yelp
We stayed at the Hana Kai several times over the years and fell in love, so we rented out the whole place for our wedding last year. Yes, this review is a little tardy! But we have nothing but wonderful things to say about Susie (the manager), the lovely staff, and of course, the grounds and Hana itself. It was a perfect day and we are forever grateful to everyone, the gods of Hawaii, aloha, and mana. The rooms themselves (and we have seen every single one!) are unique and gorgeous. I recommend the oceanfront rooms (1-5) if you can afford it. In my opinion, you can't get any better views, sounds, smells, and vibes that that. Yes, Hana is expensive. Yes, there are limited dining options in Hana. And I hope it stays that way. Hana is a special place and the Hana Kai is a special place to stay. It is not your traditional resort/hotel that you will find in areas like Wailea. And I hope it stays that way. There were a lot of other people who made our wedding spectacular (Alana, the wedding planner! Kevin, the kayak guide and videographer!) and Susie the Hana Kai were the perfect hosts. Mahalo and aloha. Needless to say, we will be back :)

Yelp
We made a reservation for Premium Oceanview Studio Unit #202 Alau, but we were pleasantly (luckily :)) upgraded to the Oceanfront 1-bedroom Unit: #1 Waikaloa because of some maintenance with #202. The room is exactly as beautiful and well equipped as described and captured in the room tour on the Hana Kai Maui website. We absolutely loved it. Everything from the gorgeous ocean views, large lanai, well equipped kitchen, cozy bedding, spacious bath, total privacy, tranquil surroundings and log-cabin like ambience beat all possible expectations. Price was not cheap ~$300 for the studio unit (glad we were upgraded though), but was totally worth it, considering that all accommodation options in Maui are pricey
