I believe this place deserves 5 Stars! Excellent location, great staff, lovely manicured grounds, and full amenities. Comfy bed, hot shower, cold A/C, fridge, microwave, toaster, etc. Having the ability to go a few blocks away and get groceries and cook is great! There is a community area with BBQ, benches, a separate smoking area situated away from the units. |The atmosphere is relaxed and not stringent in any way. There's no definite check in/check out times so no pressure there either. |This is an Inn, and exactly portrays just that. This is not a hotel, nor are they hotel rooms. An Inn is designed to provide comfort and relaxation, and I felt so relaxed and comfortable, that I could have stayed forever. We even got to make new friends while there that just so happened to be from the same place! When we go to Kauai again this year, we will try to book with Hanalei Inn again! Mahalo!

If Safety or Sanitary conditions is a concern - this is not the place for you. Safety: The boards on the steps and the lanai are falling apart. Was afraid walking on the steps. There was either a weak board or an existing hole in the board on the lanai they knew about and covered up with a mat so I wouldn't see it. I moved my chair on top of it and fell right through. I fell, the chair broke. I reported it and their response was to just place a little board partially covering the hole. They didn't even replace the chair. So we were no longer able to sit out and have coffee on the lanai together. Sanitary: The kitchen sink was constantly stopped up. It wouldn't drain. Having a kitchen it great but if you can't use it, and constantly have dirty dishes you need to clean piled up does not make for a pleasant vacation. I called, they came and did something that worked for a day. However, I called after 2 emails went unanswered. Other issues: 1. No room service - had to ask 3 times for towels, and coffee. The coffee never came. I had to stop the cleaning lady with a handful of towels. 2. Door wouldn't lock - The door was off kilter so I had to push-up while pulling and turning the lock every single time I left. Taking away about 3-5 mins of vacation time every time you wanted to leave. 3. The hammocks look very inviting but they are infested with some sort of biting bug. Looks like they have never been cleaned. They are gross. 4. The faucet in the bathroom doesn't fit the vanity. And very little water pressure. You turn it on, the water dribbles all over the vanity instead of in your sink, making it impossible to wash your face or hands or even brush your teeth. 5. Ants Here are the upsides to the Inn: 1. BED - the bed was super comfy 2. Location - 5 min walk to the most beautiful beach on earth - yes please. 3. Lanai Kitty - Kalyso kitty was a great companion I will add while the there were obvious problems with the room, it was clean. I could have lived with almost all these annoyances but once I fell on the lanai due to neglect I was done with this place. I was looking for my forever home away from home when I come to Kauai and was hoping this was it, but I will not stay here again. There were just too many issues due to neglectful management. I'm lucky I didn't get hurt. But I was so disappointed with this Inn. When I contacted them about falling through the lanai, all they said was "That is concerning, we will send the handyman over to fix it" and that is how the board arrived.

We felt right in the heart of beautiful Hanalei here! Nothing better than being a few-minute walk to Hanalei Beach and 10 or 15-minute walk in the other direction to Hanalei Bread Co, Holey Grail Donuts and lots of shopping and other yummy goodness. And for much lower rate than Airbnbs that we looked at in Hanalei. Actually the best part was the two very sweet cats that hang around the Inn. (Tip-The cat food is above the phone booth near the picnic table, if you want to befriend the sweet cats. Just don't give too much food because chickens lurk around and will steal their leftovers!) The owner and housekeeper were friendly and responsive to questions when we arrived. The room was a good size for my husband, young daughter and me. The kitchen and bathroom were basic, but got the job done. We did a decent amount of cooking in the kitchen (and loved having a full sized fridge) and on the grill outside. The parking area was very easy, and there was a hose in corner of the parking area for easy rinse-off after the beach. Wifi and cell service were good. Lots of fun to grill outside and eat at the picnic table, chill in the hammock and take it easy here!

Very close to the beach and town via walk and drive. Perfect if you will be out hiking / exploring all day. Rooms def a bit old but inline with what you’re paying. Provided coffee, and comfortable beds

Very comfortable room, quaint and a small well equipped kitchenette which was perfect for our needs. Walking distance to the beach. Very nice under cover outside patio with bbq and hammocks. A couple of very friendly furry friends (kitties) to welcome you! Thank you. Look forward to coming back and staying again one day

I loved the location, just a 5 minute walk from the more secluded western side of Hanalei Beach. I could enjoy Hanalei Beach without having to cross the one-lane bridge like if I had stayed in Princeville. ||The Inn is not a typical hotel; it is just 4 small attached apartments with no front desk. In my room, the sheets were clean, the floors and bathroom were sand-free, and smelled perfectly smoke free as advertised. Air conditioning worked well. I enjoyed the full kitchen with pots/pans/dishes and all the basic kitchen tools I needed to cook a meal. Check-in and check-out process was simple and went smoothly. Overall I had a great stay. ||Unfortunately the room is dated and could use some maintenance, and there were some annoyances during my stay. For one, the light switch entering the room would work and stop working at random times, leading to me being woken up at 3am one night by the light suddenly coming on. Also, the kitchen was crawling with ants, and I had to kill many during my stay. A positive though, was when I had a problem with the toilet flushing I called the host, and someone came to fix it within a few minutes--that's faster than most standard hotels with a front desk.||Also be warned that there are at least two cats who hang around the property. Generally harmless but they seemed to desperately want me to let them inside, and they did come inside when I left the door open a second too long.||If you go in expecting a standard Hyatt/Hilton hotel experience, you may be disappointed. Staying here feels like you're living in a local Hanalei home.

The Hanalei Inn is a pleasant stay close to the beach and the village centre. The room is welcoming and tiny, the kitchen fully equipped, the sitting area cosy, the bed comfortable and I felt in love with the flowered linen. Outside each room has a balcony with chairs, table and umbrella to enjoy good weather conditions. In addition you will find a roofed area to have BBQ and get a welcome meow from the cats. Even it is a bit outdated we really enjoyed our stay, the easy check-in / check-out and the care of the owner. Mahalo for extra pillow and beach towels. We would come again.

Michele was so kind and made our trip such a special one. She was extremely accommodating and very helpful. It is in a perfect location in Hanalei to access the beach and the little town with shops and dining. I loved having a full kitchen and bathroom. The grounds we kept very well. This is actually a perfect spot to stay if you plan on hiking the Kalalau trail. It is a quick walk to the shuttle that takes you to the trail head. The staff on the property was so kind. She even offered some camping supplies that others had left behind that she though may be helpful for our trip. If you are expecting a resort, this is not the place for you. But if you are looking for something quiet and quaint, this is perfect. It offers beautiful views of the mountains. And it made me feel like I had my own little apartment in Hawaii. I would highly recommend this place.

Yelp
This place was exactly what we are looking for. (wow, some real primadonnas have stayed here, apparently) I think many people worry they can't go to HI because it's too expensive. Lodging is, by far, the largest expense. Without lots of camping and hostels, I agree. *I* can't afford to stay in HI either. It's difficult to find ANYTHING on ANY island for less than $200/night. (hostels being a notable exception) Hanalei Inn is an exception! It's not fancy but...who the hell goes to Kaua'i to stay in a hotel room all day? We wanted a cozy bed in an area where we could walk to the food spots. This place over-delivers for that. I'll definitely stay here again the next time I'm on Kaua'i! PS: we also wanted a place to store our gear while we were hiking the Kalalau, they were kind enough to let us store our crap here for the 3 nights before we arrived. They saved us a potential break-in! (or "zip-in", since we had a Wrangler :-/)

Yelp
Dreamy location, quaint and lovely little cottage with everything we needed and more. We really enjoyed the laid back vibes and the hosts were super responsive to anything we needed, going above and beyond for us. I was reluctant to give a review because I want to keep this hidden gem hidden ; ) but our family is forever grateful for our time at the Hanalei Inn and couldn't have asked for a better place to call home for the week.

Yelp
Location - 4.5/5 Comfort - 2/5 The Hanalei Inn has an awesome location. It is close to a nearby state park with hiking and a lifeguard beach. It is about a three minute walk to a gorgeous public beach. It is a 3 minute drive from downtown Hanalei Bay. We also walked to the nearby farmer's market, which was a plus. The price is also right with the property, so if all you want is a decently comfortable place to stay while that is centrally located, adjust this to a five star review. The issue is the facility itself. It is in some desperate need of rehabilitation. There were indeed ants in the kitchen. The plumbing is VERY suspect. There was almost no water pressure in the shower and I had to reach in to the toilet numerous times to readjust the stopper. We met the property manager and he didn't seem surprised by any of these issues (nor did he offer to fix them). Again, it's a fine place to stay. The room is generally clean and functional and the location is incredible. But just know that you will have few amenities while there (and be prepared for ants ;-)

Yelp
If you want to live like a local in a Hanalei, wake up with the roosters, and walk across the street for a dawn surf session, stay here. If you want room service and a heated pool stay up the hill in Princeville. For my family (2 kids under 3) this was perfect and we will look nowhere else when coming back to Kauai! Had a full kitchen, clean bathroom, hot water, and so many little things that make it feel like home, not resort, away from home.

Yelp
This is not a spa experience nor a quaint bed and breakfast. This is a series of a few small cottages on a sweet property a couple blocks from the beach on the far end of Hanalei. There is a covered shared patio area for grilling and a couple of hammocks. The cottage we stayed in was the two-bedroom two-bath. It was tiny but perfectly functional for our travel needs. There is a small kitchen that has a fridge, stove, microvwave, coffee maker and toaster. The stove is an electric old appliance but functional. The fridge is clean and large enough to stash food for a family for a week. The dishes and flatware are old but there are plenty. There is a bed in the main room and a bed in the smaller 2nd bedroom (that also has a mini-fridge and microwave). The first bathroom appears original to the house with the tall tiled rectangular shower common to houses of the era. The 2nd bathroom is larger and more modern. The wood floors throughout the bedrooms of the attached cottage are old and full of the patina of lives of all those who have passed through. The floors in the kitchen and bathrooms are covered with other material. There is a lanai with two chairs and and an umbrellaed table off each bedroom. The sliding door stuck on the first one, but it didn't matter. When we sat out there, drinking our coffee we could see the sun and clouds kissing the mountains and hear the ocean. There was a sweet cat who visited, but didn't beg. The roosters, somehow, were barely noticeable here and didn't wake me in the mornings, even with the windows wide open. The breeze was divine. The staff was friendly and accommodating when I called to book and on the day we checked out. We got a text message with the lockbox code and wifi information on the day of check in. Parking was right in the driveway, just a few feet from our cottage. The fans could use some cleaning and the toilets were small and seemed to run. But the water was warm and the towels were soft and smelled nice. The beds were also soft, but the charm of the whole setting was the perfect place to rest and restore before heading out for hikes, a beach walk, or a lazy day driving. If you enjoy a unique travel experience without fuss or pretense, want to stay in a cottage similar to the houses many locals live in, and want a yard next to nature on the north shore, I cannot recommend this place enough. The price was also spectacularly lower than the hotels and airbnb options. I'm grateful for having this place of escape from busy life on Honolulu.

Yelp
Don't waste your money. Not a good place to stay. Dirty and needs lots of work. Manager is not a professional and runs a bad business.

Yelp
I'm shocked at the bad review about this place, it's amazing!! If you want to stay at the Ritz, then, go stay at the Ritz but if you want a really chilled out, Authentic Kauai experience then you can't get better than this. Hanalei Inn is a beautiful, quaint little row of cottages that have more than what you need. My little cottage was super clean and cosy and I loved the 1960s Hawaiian vibe. I didn't want to leave. The host, Bill, knows everything about the area from the best surf spots, best hikes and of course the best happy hours and food in the village. I will tell everyone about it and I can't wait to return! Thanks so much for such a relaxing and awesome stay. Aloha! Oh, and lastly, if your looking for some modern luxury with 20,000 tourists, designer stores, over development and inflated prices then deffo head to Waikiki. It's probably best not everyone knows about Hanalei Inn anyway, it's charming and perfect and best to be kept a secret :)

Yelp
Update: So my husband and I with our 9 month old ended up using the non refundable days we had and I was trying to keep an open mind after my experience with mr. Owner. Mrs. Owner called and apologized for the way I was treated and advised she would take care of us. Nothing was taken care of. This place is disgusting. Very unclean. Mold and actual fungus growing in the bathroom. Pictures on the website may have been taken years ago. This place is run down and highly unsanitary. The tiny shower is dirty and you are lucky to get a 10 minute hot shower. There has to be sanity regulations on Kauai?!

Yelp
I think the Hanalei Inn is a love it or hate it kind of place, and personally, I love it. My wife and I have stayed here three times: 2013, 2015, and 2018. We love what you get here: a laid-back, modest, somewhat funky little beach bungalow with a small kitchen, steps from Hanalei Beach, a brisk walk from Hanalei town, and a short drive from north shore spots like Tunnels Beach, Ke'e, and Princeville. This is not a fancy resort by any stretch, but it is rustic, charming, and wonderfully located. If you are visiting because you want to savor Hanalei beach, town, and surroundings, you might love the Hanalei Inn too. You might spot some things that could use a repair- if this would grind your gears, this might not be your favorite place. We've never had to cancel a reservation, so I can't speak to any difficulties there. In spite of the Hanalei Inn's modesty, it has a lot of charm and character. Each room has a nice patio space where you'll see lizards and beautiful green geckos while you enjoy your breakfast or coffee. There's a resident cat, Kalypso, who is extremely friendly and will be happy to get to know you. Our bed was comfortable and there's a full size fridge. The view of the misty green mountains is breathtaking. There's a hammock and shared BBQ grill by the lovely covered picnic area, and the property is surrounded by beautiful tropical plants. The new caretaker, Jim (we met Bill in previous years) has lived on the island for 50 years and is a delight to talk to. Personally I think that staying at the Hanalei Inn gives you a more authentic Kauai experience than staying at a fancy hotel, because you get to live more like a local, but I also recognize that some people are looking for a different experience. At least to me, this is paradise.

Yelp
Sweet-my first night here. No beach front, no waterfalls as advertied. Small rooms, queen bed and teeney tiney lanai, right off main road and good location. Short walk to beach, center of very hippy-fied town. Great farmers market, health food store, and grocer. I am in heaven in this town, this location. The room, though..... Update: Advertised price of 85.99 turned into 149 when we arrived. After three nights, I have an update: No breeze in the room. Cockroaches everywhere-in bathroom all over our stuff, in kitchen in any food left out. Soggy bed, itchy sheets, and withered pillows. I sought out relief for my back and sprawled on an isolated picnic table to read, only to have the manager walk over and tell me, "You can't lay there." .....In Hawaii, laid back atmosphere, me and no one around, me, competing with cockroaches, cats, and chickens everywhere-- I cannot lay here? I almost laughed. Today we moved to Sealodge in upscale Princeville. 135 a night, with two bedrooms and extra, overlooking the ocean with no obstructions, Full kitchen, living area, dining area, balcony. Luxury compared to the Inn. check out your options before booking Hanalei Inn. So nice here at Sealodge.

Yelp
This feels like old-school Hawaii to me --- small rooms with some miles on them, a few bugs, and signs asking you take your shoes off outside. The kitchenette --- mini-fridge, plates and bowls for 2, and the bathroom sink for washing up --- was a very welcome convenience after our last hotel. There's just barely room for two people to stand side-by-side chopping up a salad, but it works. The bed was older, but fine. The hot showers worked quite well for us. Bill the on-site manager / caretaker is nicely laid back. There's not a full luggage room like some places, but Bill worked out a way to stash our bags for a while we hiked on the Na Pali coast --- greatly appreciated. This isn't a fancy vacation hotel, and isn't pretending to be one --- it's just an eminently comfortable place to crash on your own adventure.

David C.

Yelp
Clean, affordable, acceptable level of charm. Rooms are on the small side but have mini-kitchenettes. great location, and a powerful A/C unit. Service is laid-back and friendly. I were planning to overnight camp on the Na Pali coast, and needed a fuel canister (because you can't fly with them) -- to save a trip back to Lihue, the guestkeeper just gave me an unused canister free of charge. Overall this spot is a winner.

Yelp
Do your homework before booking a room at this place. I would give it zero stars if I could. Pictures and descriptions are very deceiving. We were booked at this place for 3 nights. What we got was their little mentioned unit 5. The most disgusting place I have ever stayed. Hole in the deck right in front of the door. Major safety concern both day and at night. Tiny dorm room fridge that had never been defrosted. We had to sweep the floor first of all the sand and what ever else before we could do anything. The bathroom door would not open all the way because the stool was in the way. Cockroach on the wall in the morning. We tried to get switched to another room the next day, but the owner would not do it. She has ignored our repeated emails. I can't imagine anyone booking unit 5 knowing ahead of time what it is like. I knew it wasn't a 5 star place but I at least expected safe and sanitary. We only spent 1 night and went back to the Hotel Coral Reef in Kappa. Where we were treated like family and made to feel our business meant something.

Londin W.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I scored when we found this place. Some of the reviews on here scared me, but my boyfriend convinced me to ignore them. I'm so glad I did. The Hanalei Inn is so charming and private. There are no major resorts nearby, and the room is like a mini apartment with a kitchen and deck, so you feel like you are a local living in Hanalei. Hardly any other tourists in sight. The Inn is on a residential street leading up to one of the nicest beaches in the world with super soft sand and the perfect beach break. We went to the beach at the St Regis, which would have cost several hundred dollars more a night, and we were so unimpressed. Tourists everywhere, it was so artificial and the sand was sharp and beach break was full of lava rock. We came right back to Hanalei Bay and felt so lucky to be staying at such an inexpensive, awesome place in the best part of town. The manager is friendly and went out of his way to help us over and over. He loaned us snorkeling gear, beach gear and even did our laundry after a super muddy hike. We will always stay here whenever we come to Kauai. It's a true steal.

Lovely K.

Yelp
A great place to stay in the heart of Hanalei. Walk to everything. Simple, rustic but full of charm and laid back. Not the ritz but with sand on your feet, who needs it. Unit 3 has a hard and creeky bed but honestly, it's been the best sleep we've had on this trip. I'd come back forever, or at least until I could buy a house next to Ben Stiller

Sam M.

Yelp
great location close to the perfect beach, wi-fi, kitchenette, coffee in the morning, sweet cat on the premises.. :) BUT: mosquitoes are a problem. also, this is an informal small inn, so don't expect timely cleaning service or a reception desk to handle your problems. the manager is really helpful though.

erin b.

Yelp
This place is awesome. Best location, affordable, a couple minute walk to the best beach in the entire world, and a quick walk to the little town. And I love the cat. The rooms are small and old and you can hear the neighbors, but who cares, you are in Hanalei.

Eva M.

Yelp
We were looking for a place to stay for our last ight in Kaua'i, allowing us to explore the north of the island. After many phone calls to various resorts and villas, this was our best option price wise. We got there at night andleft at sunrise for a Na Pali cruise... Very cute clean room, with kitchenette, queen bed, TV and close to the restaurants street. We paid $180 total I think for one night... A little pricey for what it is, but if you are looking for a place to crash because like us, you want to spend your money on other stuff, then it is the place! You probably won't find much cheaper in the area for a "inn" room. The concierge on the phone was very nice and helpful and easy to reserve with.

Yelp
We just got back from a vacation of 6 weeks in kawaii from polihali beach to Hanalei ,Napali Coast all over the place we had a Jeep and the best place we stayed was the HANALEI INN,Brian the proprietor who's there took care of us like a king very very friendly family orientated super neat place really close to the beach and super quiet recommended for anybody .PHIL AND nancy thanks Brian you're the best ,sorry about taking the washcloth ,but I know nancy mailed it back see you soon.THIS TIME WITH OUR LABRADOR RETRIVER.

Yelp
I stayed here 5 years ago when a college friend had her wedding in Princeville. I returned to Kauai again a few weeks ago for vacation. The owner, Michelle, is the NICEST and most hospitable person and the main reason I came back to the Hanalei Inn. The rooms are all clean and well maintained. In addition, it is super close to the heart of Hanalei, so everything you need is just a hop, skip, and a jump away! You will need a car in order to get to the north side of the island but I definitely think the trek is worth it! Thanks again, Michelle, Mike, and Parnell for your hospitality and kindness!!! I'm going to try to convince my friends to stay at the Hanalei Inn next summer =)

N K.

Yelp
We had a 9 night stay here that was great. The place is on the far side of town but in a perfect location. Road's not loud at all, but we were in #4 so a bit further back. No screen for the slider, kind of a drag if you're sensitive to bites. Also there are 2 rather large avocado trees that drop fruit on a regular basis. This sounds a little like an explosion on the tin roof. Not sure how often they produce but #4 was right in the main drop zone duiring our stay. After a couple nights you get use to it a bit, although you still wake with a jolt every time. Kitchen had everything you need for two people-even some oil and butter. Free wi-fi and laundry if you need it. Bbq and shared lani area is nice if you get to know some of you neighbors. Bill keeps the place well kept and is often around should questions arise. This is not a party type place, it's a come eat and sleep and relax place to stay. Walls are thin so you have to be aware of your neighbors.

Nice P.

Yelp
I loved my stay. It was private and not over run by snobs and yuppies. I'd stay there again! A hop skip and a jump to town, a hike or the beach. The owners were lovely and the bed was comfy. Sometimes it was hard to get wifi at first but then it kicked in after awhile. I think Jen B 's review was pretty spot on. :)
