Australia Is Even Better After Dark—From Torchlit Tours and Open-air Theater to Rooftop Climbs Under the Stars

"Open-air opera productions staged over the water combine live theater with a cinematic setting—seating above the water, stars overhead and a city skyline backdrop—to create a magical, atmospheric nighttime cultural experience." - Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca is an award-winning journalist and co-founder of Be a Travel Writer, an online course for the next generation of travel journalists. I attended Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour once, and it was one of the most visually and emotionally striking experiences of my travels. The open‑air setting, with the Opera House and Harbour Bridge glowing in the background, created a stage unlike any other — cinematic, poetic, and deeply memorable. The performance itself was beautifully staged, with the orchestra and cast delivering with clarity and power despite the outdoor acoustics. What made it truly special was the atmosphere: the gentle breeze off the water, the city lights flickering behind the set, and the sense of being part of something both grand and intimate. It was my first time seeing opera in such a setting, and I left feeling grateful — not just for the artistry, but for the way the experience blended culture, landscape, and emotion so seamlessly. A one‑time visit that stays with you long after the final note.

It is a great place to see an opera with fantastic views of Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. Go early and have a snack and a drink before the show. We were lucky this year as it didn't rain, but be prepared. Take something warm to wear as the breeze can be cool off the water. Take a cushion to sit on if you want. And a poncho in case it rains. Guys n Dolls was a great show, fabulous performers. Props and staging were also excellent.

Despite pouring with rain, performance still went on. Staff were helpful from shuttle driver picking us up and dropping us off between Domain carpark and venue to ticket checkers, ushers, food and drink staff, security. While not cheap, it was all worth it.

We recently attended a performance of *Guys and Dolls*. Unfortunately, the seats were quite uncomfortable, and the staff didn’t provide any guidance on dining options. When we finally ordered food, it was disappointing. While the musical itself was enjoyable, the highlight of the evening was definitely watching the performance under the stars at Sydney Harbour.

One of my favourite venues to watch musicals and performances thanks to the sheer scale of the stage and the endless amount of space the production gets to play with. Although the audio quality cannot beat the opera house, everything else is exceptional. Also, you can't beat that beautiful harbour view during the intermission or even before the show. Your experience here is sure to be a night to remember!!

Great night watching Guys and Dolls on Sydney Harbour and the weather was perfect for the start of autumn. Had 3 course dinner before the show at the Platinum Lounge. Food and wine were delicious. Had seats off to the center left but still had a decent view. The complimentary bus back to Circular Quay after the show was welcomed.

We went here for West side story for the opening night and it poured with rain. The location is beautiful and the sunsets amazing! The sound quality is ok. Food and wine choice is limited. Make sure you always pack your wet weather gear

The show was magical, set with the opera house in the background and the stars above along with a glass of wine and a cheese platter what more could anyone want. The manager deserved a very special mention he came and welcomed everyone in a wheelchair and explained where things were and if we wanted to go downstairs he would make the service lift available. It’s a shame some of the audience were so disrespectful turning up late and then stood there talking whilst waiting for a break to be seated.
