This hotel really tries, which should be commended. It is a bit older, which means that the lobby smells like teenage socks and the walls are not thick enough to block out conversations in nearby rooms, not to mention that agitated couple at 3am. The fixtures are ailing. But all the things that can be controlled are great. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful, the beds are enormous and comfortable, and linens soft and fluffy (just bring really strong black tea if you plan to brew it in your room to disguise the coffee flavor that has settled in the nooks of the machine). There is an outdoor pool. Two restaurants and a promising looking hair salon. The neighborhood is suburban strip mall adjacent with a view of the highway and some upscale other hotels and apartment buildings. There are shops galore in walking distance, a stop of the green line that will take you places. Also a ‘riverwalk’ that is more popular with the unhoused than the locals who are carefully separated behind their various fences. Uber takes an easy 20 minutes to the airport.

Staying at this hotel now - on a quick trip from Arizona to discover Sand Diego. The hotel is fine, but dated. We’re traveling with e-bikes so I requested a ground floor room since there are no elevators here and no storage area for bikes, so we need to store them in the room. By luck, we were assigned a room that has a grass area off the patio, so we can wheel the bikes to the patio and store them there. Fortunately, the hotel is fairly quiet because nobody has been above or in a neighboring room - when someone was there, you can hear everything. The breakfast included is good, but you’re limited to 3 choices from the menu which is odd since everything costs about the same amount=- what would it matter what you order? Carmen the hostess is charming - a glimmer of light amongst the others who don’t seem to care about anything. Downsides. 1) the room is dated - we spilled something on the carpet and after we wiped it up, the washcloth was dingy. The carpet in this room is filthy. 2). I booked the hotel for location and the hot tub, but it is now roped off and has been closed for half our stay. When we ask the front desk, they just say it’s closed. Why wouldn’t this be a priority? Overall an ok stay, but could easily be improved.

We stayed here last week & had a wonderful vacation! The staff was all top-notch! I’d like to thank Jesus especially! He was very kind & genuine, worked quickly & efficiently, was always a step ahead, anticipating our needs! This wise gentleman is a very important asset to your service team! Thank you, Jesus, for making our experience memorable! We will be back, & I hope to see you again! 🙏 While I have read some mixed reviews; I feel that the Handlery room & accommodations met our expectations for the price! It is an older building & nothing is perfect?! 4 stars based on that… Our basic needs were met. The beds were very comfortable, drinking water, coffee & breakfast was available…nothing in this world is free! Parking in California is a whole different story! Period. I’d be happy to make a few suggestions on any minor details if you’d like to contact me! Thanks again for a lovely vacation! We thoroughly enjoyed an off-peak peaceful October week lounging by the pool! We cannot control the circumstances which surround us. Duh, if you had good parents! I once had to close my poolside patio door because a child had the nerve to giggle & shout during my 3 pm nap! Hahaha!!! 🥳

Adding final review items: They had other guests there that took up half the parking lot for a car show. They were up all night in the parking lot several nights, revving the cars, doing burnouts, etc. Complete nuisance and the hotel didn't care at all. Had breakfast - Burnt coffee, disgusting french toast, clearly eggs from a box, frozen bacon, the whole nine yards. Not a single thing here is up-kept, the staff are incompetent, and the quality is non-existent. The hotel checked us out early without being requested. Had to move to a different hotel which was in work anyway (Homewood Suites down the street - awesome and the same price). I will update this review in the coming days. 0/10 - The worst hotel we have ever seen. You name it... its bad. Like its so laughable how bad it is... Sheets on the bed but no comforter, TV doesn't work, AC doesn't work and just screams the whole time, room smells like death, blinds are broken, windows are all messed up and letting in bugs (had several bug bites), there is no virtually no signage when driving around, stains all over the place. Been here for one hour. Currently looking at other options to get out of here ASAP. This place is disgusting. Additionally, the website is overtly false advertising based on photographs. They show rooms that don't exist on the property and make it seem like they are the ones people will be staying in. The front desk admitted they were not the way rooms actually are.

We met here for a group event. We reserved a meeting room as our hospitality room. First night not so bad. Second night they enforced restrictions regarding our liquor usage. We could only have beer and wine. Night three. No more wine and beer and they shut us out of the hospitality room we had reserved. Perhaps they didn't like how much revenue they were losing at their bar. Now we have approximately 150 people locked into reservationd here for two more nights with no community space to meet in! Can't wait to see what they do tomorrow for our banquet dinner.

My family and I booked 2 rooms over the Labor Day weekend. The rooms were nice and clean. The entire staff was very friendly and accommodating. The pool is a decent size and not freezing cold. The location was perfect and close to everything. We are definitely staying here again.

Google
This was an awesome experience. I was there for a girls weekend birthday trip for our friend and this was an amazing experience from a couple hours north. Check in was quick. We discovered the pool and the menu was not just great by the pool but the food was EXCELLENT. Better than the big fancy chains. We decided to stay in instead of going out to our reservation. It was nice to sit back near the fire pit and had a wonderful time with exceptional food and service. The next morning we had already planned to go out to a brunch but we saw the menu in the breakfast area and WOW. We couldn’t resist and glad we didn’t because the food was SO AMAZING. Seriously Carmen our waitress took 5 star care of us. Jose the sous chef came out to meet us and told us he was responsible for our food the day before and that morning. Carmen had shared with him how we were just raving about the food. I mean I can’t say enough how awesome the food was. He came out and shared about his 40+ year career there. This is now our SD spot. Thank you for such a wonderful experience. I’m already looking forward to visiting again soon!

My boyfriend and I stayed here because we were going to Wicked at the theater. I loved our stay here and would definitely stay again for our San Diego trips. The room was super nice. I had let the hotel staff know I was celebrating an early birthday and they gave us a pool facing room which was so sweet of them, the day before we had arrived we were at disneyland so the rest was much needed. The only complaint was that the hotel restaurant was not open. We wanted to have dinner and drinks there before our night out but it was closed. They had another bar towards the pool, but the bar was sticky for having no guests at it. But maybe that's just how all bar tops are. Wished the weather wasn't so cold so we could have enjoyed the pool, it looked so nice. Being next to a mall was convenient too! Overall, the stay was lovely for a one nighter.

Yelp
Held our New Years Eve Party here . The service was outstanding and attentive . We had a great time ! Blessings to the staff for working last night ! Much appreciated !

Yelp
Be careful of the berries on the ground from their trees outside of their hotel. We got them stuck on our shoes and didn't realize til the next day we stained the carpet in the hotel. When we checked out they decided to charge us for that but saying it was from wine stains and when we told them what happened they denied it. So beware! They want that extra money from you.

Yelp
Review is for the meeting space in the Garden room only: 3.5 stars. - Came for a 2 day training event, we got "light breakfast, refreshments, and lunch" provided. - Overall decent experience in a older but clean hotel (aside from the expired yogurt, see below). - Speaker audio was good (they gave a handheld mic and a lapel mic) but the speaker podium could have been better (she had issues with using presenter view on the PowerPoint and they couldn't assist with correcting that). - Room was a bit stuffy and needed ventilation despite keeping the door propped open. - Lighting could be better - was hard to see the projector without turning off all the lights (which is hard for those of us trying to take notes during our 16h training). - Staff kept clanking plates in the back during our training, which was distracting when we're trying to listen to the lecturer. Light breakfast (buffet style) consisted of: - hard boiled eggs - oatmeal with raisin & brown sugar on the side - Damon yogurt: plain & strawberry flavor (on the second day we found out they gave us yogurt that was expired for 1 month already) - and fruit tray (strawberry, cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon, pineapple). There was coffee (choice of regular or vanilla creamer), decaf, assorted tea, orange juice, and cranberry juice (Juice was provided for breakfast only). Assorted tea (with lemon wedges) included: - black tea - lemon lift - sweet dreams - Orange & spice - Green tea with pomegranate - cozy camomile - English Breakfast black tea Lunch (buffet style) consisted of: - lemon chicken piccata (pretty decent) - garden salad (choice of ranch dressing or balsamic) - garlic mashed potatoes - noodles - their vegetarian option (barely edible) - market (steamed) veggies - choice of 3 dessert cakes: s'mores (just so so), cheesecake (not bad), carrot cake (pretty good, has cream cheese) Parking: Adequate parking lot Bathrooms: - clean but small and older stalls - 2 bathrooms available close by, one with 3 stalls and a (much) smaller one with 2 stalls Not sure how much it cost the organizers to put on the event here, I hope it wasn't too much given our experience. The highlight was definitely the garden attached to our meeting room.

Yelp
This is a very nice hotel and as all of the other reviews State, the pool is terrific. The rooms are definitely outdated but clean. When you walk in you get a nice musty smell like your grandparents house. The staff is incredibly friendly. The food is darn good but the big problem with this is its location. It is not easily walkable to anything. To walk to the mall or the closest restaurant is about 20 minutes. There is a liquor store on the other side of the highway but that is a 20-minute walk. We did find out that they deliver, so that was fun. But apart from those few things everything else you need to take a taxi. There is no complimentary shuttle, although that was mentioned in another post I was looking at. Overall it was a nice hotel, I don't think I would try to stay there again specifically, but it is not a bad option.

Yelp
I've come here bow on multiple occasions. I love this hotel! First, let's talk pool. Wow! It's huge and we'll taken care of. It is the central point of the hotel. From the pool, you can get to pretty much any point in the hotel. I love lounging here and over looking the pool when utilizing the gym. Second, FOOD! My favorite part of anywhere I go. The hotel features two restaurants- the tomi themed bar and the actual restaurant. I've definitely had my fair share of drinks and snacks at the tiki place. The restaurant is my go to place for more extensive meals. For breakfast, highly recommend the French toast. It is crusted in cereal to give it a crunch while being soft and delicious on the inside. Add some fruit and syrup and you got yourself a great breakfast. For lunch, I highly recommend the Asian salad. Add the shrimp to it. I promise, you won't regret it. The use of pear in this salad makes it so unique and fresh. Third, I love the philanthropy of the organization like holding the Red Cross biggest blood drive in San Diego or helping families who lost their homes during the flooding. Doing good for the community is just more reason I want to support this hotel. Last but not least, their ne2 calendar of events is becoming super epic! From beer fests to Jazz listening parties- I can't wait to attend all the events. Seriously, this hotel has it all and I can't recommend it enough.

Yelp
This is a great hotel. It's just off the 8 freeway. Plenty of parking. The staff is very nice. They have an on-site restaurant called The Reef Lounge. We ordered the cheeseburger. The carne asada fries. The chicken fingers. Everything was delicious and the portions were very generous. Except the pizza. That was REALLY small. The room was great. Clean. Didn't smell. The rooms are small. They just are. The pool is incredible. Plenty of room for everyone to hang out. Cute LITTLE hot tub. The tropical plants all over the property were beautiful and really added to the ambiance. I couldn't hear my neighbors during the night. It was really peaceful to sleep.

L T.

Yelp
Ashely is amazing! Great problem solver we had a door that didn't work and she had someone fix it for us within 20 minutes! The room is clean, not too expensive and a good location, the only downside is no smoothies at the breakfast restaurant.

Yelp
I was originally going to give this place 2 stars and say "It's not terrible, but it's far from great" but as the day wore on... yeah, it's actually pretty terrible. The AC doesn't work very well, and even cranking it up seems to do nothing... the room is stuffy and kind of muggy. (And all rooms look right out onto the parking lots!) There were no seats available at the pool, which was packed to the gills with screaming kids. I wanted to get some truffle fries at the "Bubbles & Bites" promotion at the Postcards restaurant, but nobody was there -- not a person in sight -- to help out or take orders during the entire 4-6 duration, so we just gave up and ate over at thr Town & Country hotel next door (which puts this place to shame! 500% better for like 30% higher price.) Then we came back with leftovers, but I couldn't put them in the fridge because the fridge isn't working (it's actually WARMER inside the fridge!) On top of that, the toilet seat doesn't stay up, and the mattress feels cheap with lumpy, uneven springs. There is no way this place should cost what it does. Breakfast isn't even included in the $150 price! It's so bad that we are considering canceling the next two nights and going elsewhere.

Yelp
Touring San Diego colleges & Handlery was the perfect location. Check in was fast & easy. Hotel rates very reasonable & parking is $18 per day. Our room oversized, older but very clean!!! Lemongrass lotions & soaps were fresh & clean. Housekeeping was Excellent. Large balcony. Bar & restaurant had great service & food was good. Snack room w/microwave for popcorn. I found this property very family friendly. Pool are large w/huge jacuzzi. I met people from Germany, Utah & Palm Springs. This property is older BUT I found it to be extremely clean, no trash or towels laying around. Suggest an inside room off the freeway. I would stay there again. Value, location & friendly staff.

Yelp
This place used to be cool. Now they charge you for parking and every other little knickknack, they can think of. No complimentary anything and unfriendly unapologetic employees who just smirk at you when you mention all the crappy changes they have made. There are way nicer hotels for the same price without all the extra charges. SKIP THIS OUTDATED RIPOFF.

Yelp
Stayed at this place cuz i got the reservation through comic con lottery. Pros: Nice front desk Easy parking in front of your building Cons: Paper thin walls All night long you can hear people arguing People with brick shoes upstairs VERY outdated rooms Shower water head is from the 1990's Parking is $18/night If you are looking for a quiet nights rest dont come here. You can hear your neighbors breathe.

Yelp
Do not hold your events here or attend any events that are held here. I was here for a work event and a few minutes after I arrived I had to walk out! An oblivious employee was walking around spraying some awful scented deodorizer. He was spraying over and over and over every couple of steps he took all up and down the hallway. There is absolutely no good reason why anyone needs to be spraying that much scented deodorizer in an enclosed space full of people! The scent was immediately in my nose and throat and I had to get OUT! Other people were scrunching up their faces & coughing too but homeboy just kept going and spraying despite people choking. Even when I went outside to get some fresh air I could still smell that disgusting scent. What in God's au de toilet is going on at this place that they need to be spraying that much scented deodorizer??? It's unhealthy for people to be breathing that stuff in as is, but at the quantity of shizzzzz this place is exposing people to... they NEED to slap a Proposition 65 warning on every entry door into this facility!

Yelp
Hotel was part of the American Society of Hematology Hotels. Terrible musty smell covered up by strong cleaning flowery artificial smell. We ended up leaving after one night.
google avatar

Kristina G.

Yelp
The staff was great! Very friendly and from what I saw the staff was always busy cleaning common areas. The room was clean. The restaurant and pool bar/lounge were very good. Be sure to take advantage of the prepaid meal voucher for breakfast. I would definitely stay here again

Yelp
I stayed at the Handlery Hotel last month when I was back in town for my grad school graduation ceremony. The Handlery is conveniently located near Fashion Valley and it's very central in San Diego to many attractions. It's close to downtown, SD airport, Mission Valley, Balboa Park, Sea World, SD Zoo etc. The hotel was built in 1954 so some parts are a bit outdated but I think it adds a nice charm to it. There's a couple of restaurants at the hotel, including The Reef Poolside Bar. It was nice grabbing a Pina Colada to enjoy by the pool. My room was ok, it can definitely use a few upgraded amenities but overall it's not bad for the price and location of the hotel.

Yelp
Came here for a work event and was lost in the hotel lobby so I asked the security guard at the front (first person you see when you enter) how to get to the Garden Room. Which is a conference hall that was booked for us. No greeting, no acknowledgment until I asked him. He said he didn't know and to ask the concierge at the desk directly to the right of him. There was no one sitting there and it looked like someone was on their break in the back room. So, I walked back over to the security guard (back on his phone again) to let him know that no one is there, he doesn't say anything to me and continues on in his phone. I moved on and found the room eventually. Poor customer service. I'm sure security is a third party vendor but that doesn't meant service/respect should go out the window. I would also like to think security would know where large conference rooms are located in the event of an emergency and overall safety protocols. The conference had great food and table side service. The outdoor area where weddings are held is a quaint little hidden spot that was beautiful under the sun. Had it not been for the food and the ambiance, I would give this hotel one star.

Yelp
Room is comfortable with modern updated furniture and comfortable beds. But the hotel as a whole needs some updating with a paint job. The outside of the building is worn and dated, painted orange and brown. There is plenty of parking but they charge $15/night for parking. They do not have complimentary breakfast but the lobby restaurant has a decent breakfast. I do recommend that they provide free coffee instead of charging $4 for it. Pool towels are at the fitness center by the pool. The best part is they have a large pool area with a spa and a heated pool for all the enjoy. Overall I enjoyed my stay but can tell the hotel needs more maintenance.
google avatar

Melvin V.

Yelp
Our stay at the Handlery Hotel this past weekend was mediocre at best. Our room was non smoking, but badly smelled of cigarettes. Although the issue was fixed it took much too long for resolve. Rooms were all outdated, the staff was pretty friendly. Top feature was the pool, which we did actually enjoy.
google avatar

Yelp
We stayed at The Handlery Hotel for Comic-Con 2024 over the weekend and it was a horrible experience. I remember staying there in the 1980s and would swear that they haven't cleaned the rugs or drapes since those days. The switch plate in the bathroom is broken and jagged--I scratched my hand on it twice--the refrigerator barely cools (with no way to adjust it), and the AC only cools intermittently, which is awful in the midst of summer. The bathroom sink drains so slowly that I am sure it is clogged. Worse of all, the front desk clerks are nothing but cheats! I reserved the room via the CCI OnPeak service, for which I had to prepay for the entire two-nights' stay IN FULL weeks in advance with no refund. This insured that we would have a 2-bed/double occupancy room. The Handlery clerk tried to foist a single/1 full bed upon us, but then said we could have a cot for $10 per night. When I showed them THEIR OWN CONFIRMATION EMAIL for the room for which I'd prepaid, they finally gave it to us after another attempt to put us off--but only with an additional $10 per night fee for the "extra bed." I agreed to it only because OnPeak was already closed back east, so I could not dispute it with their aid. Upon check out, the clerk smugly told me that I "hadn't been charged the extra $10 per night for the bed"--but they DID charge me for it: The bill instead coded it as a "room upgrade!" The lady checking out next to me had pretty much all of the same issues that I had, so this must be The Handlery's way of making a fast buck over what OnPeak is charging for the rooms. I called OnPeak today and they happily took a complaint and will investigate this and try to get a refund of the extra charges for me. I will NEVER stay at this musty, nasty, mankey old dump again, and if I could give it less than 1 star, I would!

Yelp
I have now stayed here on 2 different occasions and can say each experience was different. The first time was business and I was place in the main building poolside; first door near the main entrance. Downside to this was each time someone came in to that section of the hall the door would make a loud noise on closing and at times disturbed my sleep. However, the room was clean and for the most part quiet. I liked the shared patio space as a nice option to sit outside and relax without being poolside. Second trip, my wife and I were put in the Point Loma building (3rd building from the main) on the second floor and it was filled with extremely loud college studios who appeared to over pack the rooms with people. I would venture to guess there were 5 people in each room closest to ours based on the visual comings and goings and noise levels they produced to late hours. Positives: Clean, modern style, reasonably prices, good accomidations such as on site restaurants/bars and shopping. Great customer service that made us feel welcome and that included a small gift bag for our stay at check in. I would stay here again.

Marie S.

Yelp
Its an older hotel, built in 1954. The pool is large. The grounds are amazing. There is a lot of greenery. We had a room with two double beds on the ground floor. There was a patio overlooking greenery with two chairs, a small table, and a recliner. It had separators on either side between the other rooms. The beds were amazing. Very comfortable. The shower is ok but pretty low flow. It would be nice to have more counter space in the bathroom. There are two luggage holders, which I appreciated. I wouldn't say the room is small. There is enough space with a couch, chair, and desk. Pamela at the front desk checked us in and was very nice. The card reader for our building wasn't working but a nice gentleman from maintenance stopped and helped. Breakfast: I got a yogurt parfait. The menu said the granola was house made. I believe it as IMHO it was a little odd. Not bad or not fresh I just didn't care for it. This place is a little worn around the edges but I still liked it and would love to stay again.

Keasha B.

Yelp
I will never stay at this hotel again. I come to San Diego frequent visit my daughter and decided to try a new place to stay..well that won't happen again. It started with the lack of customer service when checking in to the hotel to the lack of customer service during my stay. Something as simple as requesting water to my room was nothing the hotel could accommodate even though the vending machines were out of water in my building. Latrice was extremely rude and not accommodating and I just wouldn't recommend staying here. It is not safe after dark to be outside your building and that wasn't anything taken into consideration when making my request for water.
google avatar

Almarosa V.

Yelp
Nope. Never again. I have a habit of inspecting the room before unpacking anything (I can thank my career choice for that). We literally walked in our room and walked out. You could smell the damp mold as soon as you walked in. We were here for a conference and all 10 us left the hotel and checked into another one. Others were also leaving. They did give us a refund and the front desk was apologetic but the amount of mold visible was awful. I'm sure plenty of people have gotten sick of this place and didn't even realize it. Avoid this place at all costs.

Emily D.

Yelp
Please train your employees better. I asked if parking was free/included in our stay. The front desk attendant said yes, gave us a parking pass, and told us to park in the main lot. Random $18 charge a few days later... ‍ Called and they said all employees know parking is $18. Well, apparently not because I specifically asked and they did not once say it was $18. Aside from that, the room itself was pleasant. Enough space for two of us. I didn't get to use the amenities but there's a spacious pool and jacuzzi (hopefully they don't randomly charge you for that either). The cleaning staff is friendly. Lots of dogs cause it's pet-friendly which I appreciated.

Mark S.

Yelp
Got a room next to corridor entrance and vending machines. Vending machines were empty so I got to enjoy listening to customers yell at the machines while their 15th selection was denied, the machines were empty. Air conditioning didn't work room was almost intolerable, air conditioning unit dripped condensation on floor from ceiling, toilet seat is almost falling off..Charged almost $300 for a deposit that was not made clear upon reservation. They also charge $100 for parking. No locks on windows at ground floor missing screens on windows. A

Yelp
It did it's job but was nothing spectacular. We basically used it to get ready and sleep. I will say the staff was fantastic when we checked in. Super friendly and gave great recs. 5/5 stars for them! My biggest question is why don't they use fitted sheets? They use regular sheets and they don't stay on the mattress.
google avatar

Robert T.

Yelp
I come here frequently because two professional association I belong to hold monthly meetings and sometimes symposiums here. The hotel has an old school feel and I have never has cause for lodging here personally so I cannot vouch for that. The parking accommodations are very good. Unlike the nearby Town and Country, there is no easy mass transit to get here. Any of the dining I have done at events is purely middle of the road.
google avatar

Carolina R.

Yelp
Nice staff, nice room !! I just didn't like that you have to pay for parking.. you have to pay for your coffee, that should already come with. Loved the pool and jacuzzi area!!!

CJ L.

Yelp
Another conference was a success thanks to the excellent service at Handlery. Breakfast was beautifully presented. Evening bar service was friendly and attentive. The training room was set up exactly to our specifications. A special thank you to Estela for organizing and charming Enrique for tracking down my lost item. Can't wait to return!

Christine S.

Yelp
I feel dooped. 800.00 for this poop!!! And the carpets are disgusting. The house keepers were very nice though. The bed bugs are aggressive and the other hotel staff is less then friendly.

Jennifer F.

Yelp
My daughter and her boyfriend we're going to this hotel, I didn't book it, somebody else did for them. I saw the reviews the day before and freaked out because of the bedbugs and disgusting stuff others had found !! It was too late to cancel so they went. She said she checked the bed and it was OK (she is young so not sure how good she checked ) then in the morning after sleeping in the bed found disgusting sheets they were sleeping on.. crazy to me that a place like this can get so many reviews and pictures and do nothing about it! DONT STAY HERE!!!

Yelp
Yes! If Julia is working at the restaurant bar! She's the best! The bar has great service, great happy hour and great service! The lobby is so clean and everyone is so kind.

Yelp
***This is a review in regards to the event venue and staff, especially Saraya Hubbard.*** My fiancée and I were considering the Handlery for our wedding reception. Overall the venue is amazing- there is a really nice courtyard and plenty of space in between the hall and the ballroom to have a great cocktail hour. The prices were reasonably priced and offers a lot! Saraya and her team were very courteous and helpful throughout our visit. She took her time to explain everything thoroughly, and it felt like she was trying to help us find what we want, rather than trying to just get our money. Overall I highly recommend the Handlery as an event space-Saraya and her team will definitely take care of your needs

Yelp
Our stay here was as expected, nothing worse and nothing more. I was initially hoping for a bit more "elevated" of an experience (based on their branding) from the Super 8 or a Motel 6, but can't expect much from a two star hotel in the same class. Check-in process was a breeze and the staff was very friendly. The room was semi-clean, although there was a wet, used bath towel behind the bathroom door when we checked in (I think housekeeping must have forgotten to check behind the bathroom door). The king size bed mattress was decent, although very used, and not great for people with back issues. We luckily brought a 3-inch mattress memory foam topper with us to add to the top of the mattress; had we not brought that, I don't think my back would have held up. The "upgrades" from cheaper hotels were noticeable, such as the USB and electrical connections throughout the room + guaranteed fridge, balcony, and safe. Bummed there was no microwave. I also didn't notice an elevator in our Point Loma building, perhaps the main building has one? We carried our stuff up the steps ... but, an elevator with a bellhop cart would have been much more convenient. Self parking was free - MAJOR PLUS! Ever get to a hotel and they're like ... "oh yeah, that'll be $30+ extra per day please!" Not here, which was nice. Parking lot was huge too so there was no fighting for a good space. Location is also very convenient to all of San Diego; being just off the freeway on Hotel Circle does have it's perks. All-in-all, I probably wouldn't book here again with intense vigor unless it was the cheapest rate for the dates selected. As stated, this hotel met expectations. Did not drop below and did not exceed them.

Yelp
I nearly canceled our reservation because of all the bad reviews for this hotel and then we had a great time, so I feel like I should share our take! We found the Handlery very comfortable and clean, with friendly staff. The location is central to things we wanted to do and see. The building is a little run down, but for a family vacation on a budget it was really perfect. My youngest LOVED the pool and we had a surprisingly good meal at the poolside lounge (shrimp pasta was excellent.) The whole place is sort of frozen in 1992, but it's not like that was the worst year. I would absolutely recommend it for a family trip.

Yelp
I prepaid for my room and was still charged an additional $50 a day refundable deposit. None of the vending machines work or they are warm. The bed in our room didn't even have a fitted sheet and instead had a top sheet tucked into the mattress. It's easy access to the highway and close to stuff but just don't expect much out of accommodation and do be prepared to pay an additional fee.

Yelp
I stayed here while attending the San Diego ComicCon. It was a reasonable hotel with very attentive staff. Their sound-proofing is not the best, however I used my white noise machine and slept well each night. The pool and whirlpool were clean and well-maintained. When I needed items from housekeeping, the staff arrived in a matter of minutes at my door to take care of me. I will point out that there are no elevators in the three long buildings. They are only 2 stories tall, so taking my bag up the stairs was not too bad. The refrigerator in my room worked fine (it was located next to the bed, but didn't make too much noise). I had a similar issue as one of the other reviewers - with making a reservation for 2 beds and only getting one. However they did not charge me for the rollaway or for parking. I suspect that part of the problem was due to the CCI OnPeak service and part may be basic miscommunication by the hotel. So, if you're going for ComicCon, call the hotel to confirm your reservation as soon as you get your confirmation code. I'm giving them 4 stars because I know how crazy it can get for the Con, and because the room was clean and it was tidied up each day by the housekeeping staff.

Yelp
Disgusting. Absolutely disgusting. My mother didn't check the reviews when she saw a cheap hotel. Let me tell you, it was cheap for a reason.

Yelp
The hotel was pleasant and the staff were awesome and helpful. Our door cards kept deactivating so we visited the front seat a few times. They didn't mind. Typical coffee in the room but only one package for a double room. The property, pool and room were very clean and they are located close to everything in town. I have two complaints. 1. I had to remove the hair clog out of the tub drain myself, and 2. They charged me $18 to park my vehicle in their parking lot!!

Yelp
Well, was not greet polity at the front desk, Then was out for the day with the do not disturb sign on the door....Why bother. Then enter the room, moved stuff around. I am very unimpressed. Building are locked yet I have restaurant ads under the day each day.. REALLY reconsider before you block. PS food takes forever and not that great.

Yelp
I had the grand misfortune of staying at the Handlery Hotel in San Diego in March of this year. initially my expectations were sky high as their web site leads you to believe this is a luxurious hotel staffed with except employees. Nothing could be further from the truth. There Is an overpowering mildew stench that greets you when you enter your room. Worse still there was what appeared to be bed bugs. I spoke to guest services and they were extremely rude & unhelpful. She told me there was nothing they could do about it. To make matters worse it didn't appear as if the bedsheets had been properly laundered. There was a stain that looked as if it was caused by a bodily fluid I would rather not describe in full detail. When I called to the front desk to ask for new sheets she hung up on me. A few subsequent calls elicited the same response from staff. Avoid this hotel at all costs.

Yelp
This place is not what the pics show. Pretty ghetto for the price point. Small rooms and smaller bathrooms. Old with lots of makeup. Avoid and stay somewhere else. Also drug addicts and homeless are all up and down the street.

Yelp
Had great customer service from Ana went above and beyond for us. And Manny in the Bar great customer service also.. and we had some little problems in our room while being there on our last night a lot more came out on the desk just a few on the bed . We where there 6 days $$$$ that a lot of money Gave us back the parking price wish wasn't much, but wish they could of done a little more for us. And we never slept under the covers and something told me to check on our last day to find hairs that don't belong to us that a little gross. We spent $1,452 for 6 days over price plus you pay for parking

Yelp
The smell of this room made me nauseous! It smells like a fat old man . We stayed in the double traditional the beds were hard ! The pillows were so flat and uncomfortable. We don't even have a fridge ! The pictures were so deceiving

Yelp
I had someone go into my room and use my phone and make long distance phone calls and racked up a $1,028. And they never called me back to resolve the problem. So would not stay here.

Yelp
Stood here this past weekend. Close to old town which is a plus. Will I stay here again Nope. Don't get me wrong I have read some of the current reviews and I agree with some. It was a pleasant stay don't get me wrong the hotel looked ok. When we first arrived she gave us a breakdown of the room which was more than what we were told when we booked. When I asked her she said oh that's with taxes plus $15 parking fee Plus $150 for incidentals. The bathroom was small the room was very dim housekeeping even though she asked if we need service all she did was make up the bed everything else was left as is.

Yelp
Old rundown rooms out of the 70s. Paint was peeling and everything looked broken - doorknobs, bathtub, AC. The air conditioning in our original room gave out so we had to change rooms at about 8PM with a one-year-old in tow. I called the front desk multiple times to but no one picked up, so I had walk over to the lobby to get someone's attention.

Yelp
This place was unethical, illegal, discriminating and foul on all levels. A woman named Cheryl at the front lobby watched me wait for her to greet me for 17 minutes or so. She did not say a word to me. Finally, I approached her and asked for a room and she immediately said she couldn't offer a room for me because my dogs. I told her that I have disability paperwork for them yet she declined our stay. This is absolutely illegal. I said why did you have me standing here for so long ? She said well "I didn't know if you were checking out or just standing there" WAIT WHAT? I said this makes no sense you told me one second ago personals w disability assigned dogs were NOT allowed so how could I possibly be checking out ? That would mean they are in fact allowed. I called the manager via phone after walking out of the lobby and have yet to hear back from management. HORRIBLE and inhumane.

Yelp
Average hotel. Dated hotel and needs to be renovated but doable when it's just a place to sleep. I had to fly in for the weekend to be with my daughter for a few days. Hotwire had a good deal on a 4Star hotel so I took it. I got this hotel after I paid Hotwire...definitely not a 4Star hotel. Pros: convenient, two malls in the area, easy freeway accessible, large room, quiet area. Cons: it's an older hotel, bed is small, parking area is just open for all to come in/out, had the do not disturb sign on the door but housekeeping came in anyways. Nothing great to report, nothing bad to report cuz I only reserved a place since I need a place to sleep so it's just doable.
