8 Spooky Locations to Explore Japanese Lore

"Established in 1804, a shrine by the name of Anamori Inari Shrine originally stood on the western part of what is now Haneda Airport. Its main subject of worship was Toyoukebime, goddess of agriculture, who was syncretized with Inari Ōkami, the fertility deity (kami). After hot springs were discovered right in front of it, the shrine became quite popular from the late 19th-century to the early 20th-century. During the Allied occupation of Japan following World War II, General Douglas MacArthur took over control of Haneda Airfield, originally built in 1931. He turned it into Haneda Army Airbase, but the base was too small for the United States military. He expanded the airbase and forced thousands of people who lived in the area west of the base to vacate their homes within 48 hours. The construction work began in November 1945 and was completed by June 1946. The Anamori Inari Shrine was moved to its current location, but its red torii, constructed around the 1920-1930s, remained on the edge of the airbase. In traditional Japanese architecture, a torii is an arch-gate that stands at the entrance of a Shinto shrine, symbolically representing the portal to the sacred realm of the gods. According to the history book published by Keikyu Group, when workers attempted to bring down the torii gate of Anamori Inari the rope snapped off, injuring the workers and the demolition was temporarily canceled. Soon after work resumed, the construction director suddenly died of an illness. The Japanese workers were horrified believing the structure was cursed. Eventually, its removal was canceled.  Another theory has it that the torii was left there as an act of defiance, as many people who were evicted from the area were hired as part of the construction team. During the 1990s, an expansion of Haneda Airport was planned and the torii was finally set to be removed from the site. In 1999, it was decided that the torii should be relocated, not demolished. The relocation work took place on a sunny day, but as if the “curse” continued, it suddenly got windy and started to rain. It was successful, however after two days of work. It was finally relocated to Tenkūbashi, at the far end of the Haneda area." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Hi W.

Google
The airport is small but very convincing. There are many cafes, restaurants, and shopping centers as well as 7 eleven. In terms of price is really good because not that much different from outside and I really appreciate it. Alll facilities you can have for luggages or disabled people etc. Very great prepared for nursery stuff and babies need. Also check in security stuff very fast and without headache. The staff all are wonderful and supportive

We had a really upsetting experience with a Tokyo Monorail staff member at Haneda Airport (Domestic Terminal) on October 6 around 8:35 PM. My partner and I accidentally went through the wrong gate and tried to exit back through it, not realizing we couldn’t do that. The staff member who should have been at the help desk wasn’t there — he was on his phone, hidden away from the counter. When he eventually came out, he immediately started yelling at us repeatedly, speaking in a very rude and aggressive way. Even though we kept apologising and trying to explain that we didn’t know, he refused to listen or answer any questions. He then snatched my partner’s iPhone (with her IC card) out of her hand and slammed it down on his workstation. It was completely unnecessary and intimidating. We were shocked and very uncomfortable. Mistakes happen, especially for visitors who aren’t familiar with the system, but there’s no excuse for treating people like that. Haneda Airport and Tokyo Monorail usually have great staff and service, so this experience was really disappointing. I hope management looks into it and improves staff training.

Google
There is no information saying this airport closes at night. We arrived too early and had to wait outside in -3°C while the staff ignored us. When we asked the staff on the south side for help, they suggested we walk on the road to the first floor for warmth, which felt too dangerous. So, we ended up waiting until 5:30 AM for the gates to open. To make matters worse, the staff laughed as if our situation was funny.

Haneda airport is modern, clean, attractive and convenient. There's a Tokyo Monorail service that travels directly from Hamamatsucho to Haneda airport every 4 minutes. The shopping experience is exciting and the longue facility has a relaxing atmosphere where travellers can get private resting space with delicious snacks and beverage options. The waiting line is minimal and travel is convenient.

Google
Domestic airport terminal for mainly JAL passengers. There are three terminals 1, 2, and 3 not linked for walking. One has to get on to a free shuttle to go from one terminal to the others.

Google
There are two railway stations at Haneda airpirt. One is Keikyu and another is monorail. This is monorail station. Monorail is faster than Keikyu to go to downtown but you have to transfer at the terminal to go to main areas in Tokyo. On the other hand, Keikyu is useful that you can go to main stations like Shinagawa (Shinkansen station), Shimbasi, Asakusa, Skytree, Yokohama directly. ATM is available in front of the gate of this station.

Yelp
On my first trip to Japan, I got to experience both Haneda and Narita airports. Haneda is now one of my favorite airports ever. Sizable yet highly efficient, spotlessly clean, well organized, professional personnel, quality amenities and delicious food options. This is a dream airport for business and veteran travelers.

Yelp
This is the domestic terminal for ANA and other local discount airlines. A huge airport with an equally large shopping concourse. The terminal does a decent job in maintaining order despite so many passengers in one day. If you are looking for souvenirs, the shopping concourse is a great source. There is also a collection of unique vending machines on the left side of the terminal when you come in from the train station.
