Hank's Harvest Foods – Twisp, Washington - Gastro Obscura

"When strolling through the grocery store either as a seasoned local on a routine run to the cereal aisle or a vacationing out-of-towner desperately hunting for the Oreos needed to satisfy your late-night cabin craving, it’s not uncommon to come across some unique local charm. Murals of mountains painted on the walls in Nevada or fishing poles next to the deodorant in Maine are par for the course, and a much appreciated break from the bland repetition of big chain grocers. A less expected sight to glimpse out of the corner of one’s eye is the sight of a massive lion stalking and tackling a wildebeest through a dense forest of stacked dog food bags. That’s exactly what you’ll see, like it or not, at Hank’s Grocery in Twisp, Washington. Scattered throughout the small town store are the stuffed or mounted carcasses of animals Hank himself has killed. He’s more than happy to have calm words with those who find his décor in poor taste. Hank is an avid outdoorsman and wildlife enthusiast who does his hunting among healthy, full populations of animals, with a bow an arrow. He uses his spare time and money to fund legal, organized, and ecologically sustainable hunting practices in Africa. All in all, the mounted animals may actually be one of the more environmentally sound items in the grocery store. None" - JoelCCandelaria, Sun, Mark Casey, Rachel, MikeInSanFrancisco

I am camping in a near by town and was told Hanks was one of the only grocery stores in the area. After seeing the horrific exotic/endangered animals displayed in the store I will NEVER shop in this store. I'll pay the ridiculously high prices in Winthrop before supporting the sensless & illegal killing of endangered animals. Disgusting!

I was looking for a store on my phone while passing through the area, but after seeing photos of the inside of Harvest Foods and reading more about it, I couldn’t bring myself to go in. The walls are still covered with the bodies of exotic animals—killed for sport and displayed like trophies. I understand the original owner, the one responsible for these so-called "decorations," has sold the store to Rosauers—but the fact that they’ve chosen to keep that grotesque display says everything. It’s disturbing. I also read that the previous owner was known for acts of generosity in the community, which somehow makes it even more unsettling—like trying to cover for having no soul with a few good deeds--what a narcissist. I won’t support a place that glorifies cruelty, no matter who owns it now. And I hope others will stop to consider what kind of message this store is still choosing to send.

My favorite store to shop in. The owner is friendly, and if you happen to pass by him in the store, he is always willing to help and makes sure you're satisfied. The Hanks sausage is the best I've ever tried, and the store is unique with all the stuffed exotic animals. Its so nice having a local grocery store that has retained the 'small town' feel and friendliness. And Hanks has many items that I cant find at the other stores.👍

Clean, friendly, great variety, and well stocked. We got an early lunch from the deli which offered plenty for the family. Delicious. Will go back when in the area.

my mom and i went shopping here for a few items and were carrying our two chihuahuas inside as it was over 80 degrees outside and would be too hot to leave them in the car. one lady, I believe her name is Jaime, came up to us and said dogs are not allowed in the store, so we said we would finish checking out if that’s okay and then leave. She continued to follow my mom around the store and say “i thought you were leaving” and at one point told us to get out — even following my mom all the way to the check out line… as if she didn’t want us to buy anything there because we didn’t want our dogs to suffocate in the car. very rude service. and no one bothered to call us back regarding our poor treatment.

No longer Hanks, had been purchased by Rosauers. Prices went up, selection and customer service went down. Unfortunate for our community.

I recently had the pleasure of shopping at Hank's Harvest Foods in Twisp, WA, and I must say, it was an experience worth sharing. From the moment I stepped in, it was clear that this isn't just any grocery store; it's a family-owned gem that has been serving the community since 1975. What caught my attention wasn't just the quality of foods, which was exceptional, by the way, but their commitment to supporting local products. They have an impressive range of items from groceries, bakery goods, fresh produce, meats, cheeses, and even a well-stocked wine, beer, and spirits section. But what truly sets Hank's apart is their Wooden Nickel incentive program. As someone who tries to be mindful about the environment, I appreciated the store's encouragement to bring reusable bags. For each bag you bring, you receive a wooden nickel, which you can then donate to a local nonprofit organization. This brilliant initiative had already raised over $2,400 for various local organizations by the time it was temporarily paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The program has now been restarted, and I'm excited to see how much more we can contribute to our community together. The staff at Hank's were not just employees; they felt like part of a big, welcoming family. Their warmth and willingness to help were notable, making my shopping experience even more pleasant. They've managed to create an atmosphere where shopping is not just a chore but a community-building activity. It's refreshing to see a business that not only cares about the quality of products they sell but also about the impact they have on the community and the environment. Hank's Harvest Foods is a testament to what businesses can achieve when they put their heart into it. I'm already looking forward to my next visit, and I'd encourage anyone in the area to stop by and support this fantastic local store. I love all the taxidermy.

Yelp
A reasonably well stocked grocery store in a small town with few other similar options anywhere nearby. The staff is helpful, the grocery store has a fairly complete selection of groceries and related items, and it is obviously the place where the locals shop.

Yelp
Best Grocery store in the state, in my opinion. Always have what I want and need, clearly displayed and easily found.

Yelp
What a fantastic grocery store! The friendliest staff, and you can find some of the best deals in there! The decor of the store is something to behold, never seen anything like it. Hank, keep Doing what you do! You are appreciated.

Yelp
500 pounds of meat through the smokehouse DAILY - you know they got their skills honed. I suggest you bring a cooler!

Yelp
Check out the newly reminded meat market. Hanks is the best place to go in town to spark up a good conversation with just about any local...slow down and take your time to find Hanks special red tag discounted items. Way to go Hank, thanks for supporting our community. Thanks for all the money you donated to the community during covid...

Yelp
HAD SIMPLY ORANGE JUICE gotta say this place was the definition of hick-ville. prices were pretty good. wasn't too busy. the taxidermy was the only thing that "bothered" me. i was scared to get my ice cream! all these exotic animals dead up on display, i was not a big fan! but whatever, what can you do.... Bonni at the deli was so sweet! she seemed happy to be working and happy to see a couple of teenage girls to serve! i'd be friends with Bonni for sure.

Yelp
In a town with not a lot , Hanks was great . We picked up lots of goodies last for our lodge stay ( given the lodge restaurant was high priced blah food ) every employee was so friendly and nice! The lady in deli served my family up some delicious ice cream , she was so friendly ! We had great conversation and she offered us some blue star coffee . It was delicious.

Yelp
We love Hank's! They have great meat, and awesome deals on it. I always stock up here before we head back over the pass. Their homemade beef sticks and sausages are amazing. The smoke cheeses are awesome too. There is lots to see as Hank has many of his animals stuffed, mounted, and on display. Prices are great. Hank and his family do tons for their community and you always see Hank at the store working along side his employees. Everyone we have encountered there is super kind and helpful.

Yelp
The two of us travel extensively and shop at grocery stores all over the country. We prefer locally owned shops rather than national chains. Hank's is absolutely one of the best local groceries we have found. Bright, clean, modern, well-stocked, with a nice selection of products and an eat-in deli. That said, the main reason we stopped was to see the impressive display of big game taxidermy! Not everyday can you pay for your ice cream and mustard while looking at an African Lion attack a Warthog!

Yelp
This place has the best donuts I have ever had. I will challenge anyone who thinks otherwise. The frosting is amazing and the dough is light and fluffy. I live 6hrs away and visit once a year during hunting season, the first stop I make is here to get a donut. I would go out of my way to have a donut from Hanks.

Yelp
Hank's is a wonderful local community store! It has so much to offer and at fair prices! They stock all kinds of varieties and include lots of regular and organic brands. You will have the pleasure of seeing Hank himself stocking shelves and waiting on customers! He is a hard working man who cares about his customers! Just love this place!

Yelp
Gentlemen bagging our groceries was wearing mask under nose. A couple of customers without them. Otherwise great little store and reasonable prices.

Yelp
Great place for food along the road. We had shrimp and a couple of sides. We will eat here anytime we are in the area

Yelp
Hanks is, hands down the best Grocery store in the Valley. Not to mention Hank himself. He, his wife Judy, and the entire crew will go out of their way to help you. If they don't carry something, just ask and they will do whatever they can to get the product in, guaranteed! We have two grocery stores in this valley, and you couldn't pay me enough to shop at the other one. I am a Hank fan through and through, even the animals displayed in the store seem to say "welcome!" I know, first hand what lengths Hank and his crew will go to to ensure that the customers always come first. If you don't like the dead animals, don't look at them. They do grow on you, and before you know it, you won't even know they are there. SHOP HANKS! Get to know him, and all the wonderful people that work there. You won't be sorry.

Yelp
Yes, this is a review for a grocery store in Twisp. TWISP? What's Twisp? Well, it is a place near and dear to my heart. Located in the Methow Valley and about 20 miles away from Winthrop, Twisp is home to the BEST FRIED CHICKEN IN THE WORLD! Throw a couple chicken breasts in the cooler on a hot summer day, and enjoy it by the river. I've sat around with my friends, eating fried chicken in our bikinis. It really doesn't get any better than that. Oh, and Hank's is a pretty cool market. Great deli, taxidermy animals, and yes, they honestly do care... just not about my waistline.

Yelp
Hanks, the best grocery if your in the Winthrop, Twisp area. Prices are fair for this out of the way locale. The taxidermy is super cool! And they have lots of things to service the local hippies that you might not see elsewhere. Can you say Amish rolled butter from Wisconsin? Get your stuff here instead of Winthrop.

Yelp
This place creeps me out and I avoid it at all costs. But it isn't because of the food or the service, it's because there are 100 dead animals watching me while I shop! And not just deer...hyenas and probably like, centaurs and stuff. It's almost more of a tourist attraction than a grocery store!

R K.

Yelp
This is a great store. Lots of local and organic foods. Super sales! Owner is very friendly and works just as hard or harder than his employees. He dies lots for the local community. My go to grocery store.

Yelp
I love this store! It's produce is fresh & a great selection. The prices are good...lots of sales. It provides free WiFi & lots of seating in the deli area. The deli food is good & the servers always have a smile & are patient.

Yelp
Great meat market. Excellent cuts. They make there own jerky, which is pretty damn good. Customer service is hit or miss. With a lot more hits than misses. All and all, a nice grocery store for locals.

Yelp
My wife and I stayed in Twisp for a couple of days, in August, during which we purchased food from Hank's. The staff was very friendly, and made us feel welcome and valued. While there we decided that one of the store's rotesserie chickens would be perfect for dinner; however, dinner time was a few hours away. The staff cheerfully offered to put aside a chicken, from the final batch to be cooked that day, for us to pick up at dinner time. We were not charged in advance. When my wife and I showed up at 5:00 p.m., the staff plucked the chicken from one of the food warming enclosures and handed it to me. We appreciated the reliability of the staff and their high-touch customer service.

Yelp
The BEST small town grocery anywhere. Awesome deli, great selection. They have an on-house smoker. Good stuff!

Yelp
OK, it is a bit creepy with all of the stuffed animals hanging about but they have a decent wine selection and they have you covered for all of the basics you may need.

Yelp
I moved to Twisp 3 years ago from the San Francisco Bay Area where there are many many markets. Hank's is definitely the best all-around supermarket I've ever had access to. Helpful friendly staff. Amazingly complete and varied selection of food and household products. Good fair prices and there are always sales for times when money is tight. The cleanest market I've ever been in. AND to top it off, Hank offers a decent cup of coffee at 75 cents (recently had to raise the price from 50 cents) along with a pleasant place to sit and drink it. Yes, there are taxidermic specimens of animals and animal heads above the frozen foods cabinets. Hank's hobby is big game hunting. If you are offended don't go in. If you aren't it is a good place to see a lot of different deer species.

Yelp
I like this store because they have organic produce and foods as well as a raspberry wine that has become one of my favorites. I also love their deli turkey sandwiches. The workers there are friendly and eager to help their customers. I am currently visiting from California and I recommend this store :)
