The Best Vietnamese Restaurants in Portland | Eater Portland

"North Vietnamese dishes are the specialty at this spacious, family-run restaurant in Montavilla. The restaurant is a stalwart for hot noodle soups like crabmeat and escargot vermicelli, as well as its steamed rice crepes with lime-chile dipping sauce. There are loads of meatless options, too, including a vegetarian version of fish sauce." - Janey Wong

Where to Eat and Drink in Portland’s Montavilla Neighborhood | Eater Portland

"A standout Vietnamese restaurant in a town full of them, Hanoi Kitchen is an under-sung, spacious dining room with polished wood floors and a tile ceiling. Family-owned, the restaurant offers vermicelli noodle bowls, rice-crepe wraps, and a range of rich phos and other soups — including a terrific vegan pho and other vegan and vegetarian dishes. Entrees come with a generous handfuls of basil, shiso, cilantro, and other fresh herbs." - Nathan Williams

Visited: Friday 7/21/2025, Hanoi Kitchen – Portland, OR New Business Hours posted on front door (as of March 2025, posted on their website): Friday to Monday: 10:00 AM–3:00 PM, reopen 5:00 PM–8:00 PM Closed: Tuesday–Thursday This summer’s obsession for bánh cuốn brought me back to PDX after a weekend in Westminster and Garden Grove, CA. I finally gave Hanoi Kitchen a go even though I’ve driven past them for 4 years. I called ahead around noon to ask if they could set aside a bánh cuốn for dinner. They confirmed they only make a limited batch in the morning and reheat per order, but assured me the texture would still be soft, not chewy. We came in at 6:15 PM as a party of 3. Only one dine-in customer was finishing up and two to-go orders were picked up during our meal. What we ordered: -1 Bánh Cuốn ($14) -Combo A – Cá Bông Lau Kho Tộ & Canh Chua Tôm ($18) -Combo B – Sườn Ram Me & Canh Khoai Tây ($18) -1 Cà Phê Sữa Đá ($7) -1 dozen Organic Eggs ($6) Total: $64 Food Notes: -Bánh cuốn was soft as promised. The chả lụa texture was softer than I like, and the fish sauce was just okay. I will continue my quest for Bánh Cuốn or until the obsession wears off. -Combo A: The catfish fillet (skinless, unlike the traditional round cut bone-in with skin) was decent for the sauce but lack deep as expected. The soup had sprouts, pineapple, Thai chili, and bạc hà (though replaced with celery). Flavor was light and lacked the depth we’re used to. -Combo B: Tamarind pork was well-balanced, but the canh khoai tây would’ve been better with short ribs or bone-in cuts instead of straight chewy pork meat. -Coffee was slow-dripped as ordered because they told us so. Standard taste, though I prefer a stronger brew and a better coffee-to-condensed-milk ratio. -The dozen organic eggs were pre-packed and stored in the fridge, which I appreciated. Other Details: -Street parking available along NE Glisan, plus a private lot in back. -Decor is dated, inside and out. The neighborhood feels a bit rough, which may explain the limited hours. -Toilet seat covers were out in the ladies’ room, so I took one from the men’s room since we were the only customers at the time. Overall: A quiet, family-run spot that really does feel like eating in someone’s home. You can hear your food being cooked in the kitchen. The meal satisfied our cravings for comfort Vietnamese dishes without having to cook. We’ll return for the same dishes next time the craving hits.

I sought out to get a bowl of pho solo for lunch before hitting the farmers market. I ordered the banh cuon and pho Hanoi. Banh cuon was warm with fresh toppings and a perfect nuoc mam. Hanoi style pho, I discovered on my trip to Hanoi, is different from southern style which is what I grew up eating in Portland. Hanoi style has a lighter broth and flavor is more beef forward than spice forward. I added Thai Basil, jalapeños and lemon juice. No hoisin or sriracha was brought out so I went without. The pho tasted like the bowls I’ve had in Hanoi but with more generous amounts of meat. The dining area was very empty so I greatly enjoyed a quiet solo dining experience, but I hope more and more people come and check this neighborhood gem out.

Wow. Excellent authentic northern Vietnamese cuisine. The menu is extensive. Portions are large & prices very reasonable. My wife & I enjoyed our bowls very much. Every bites were tasty. Highly recommended.

Husband was craving Bun Cha. Ordered Bun Cha (not in picture), Rice Plate Special (com tom), and Shaken Beef. The Bun Cha tasted good but we only got a small amount of vermicelli noodles. The Shaken Beef was flavorful but a bit chewy. Would recommend the Rice Plate Special.

Google
This local spacious restaurant deserves more attention and love. The quality of the food and the portion are far ahead of what the other places could offer. Prices are so reasonable and affordable. I love almost everything on their menu but Bun bo Hue and Bun cha Hanoi are hands down my most favorites.

Google
Everything I put in my mouth had layers of flavors and textures. Best fried rice I’ve had in a while, it’s got a little bit of everything. My husband got the Pho and it was delish. I tried something new, Bun Cha and absolutely loved it. Highly recommend coming with friends and trying a bunch of different dishes. And the service is fantastic!

Google
The most authentic tasting viet food Ive had that’s very close to the Northern Hanoi flavor! The amount of food you get to is a big plus. Tried three different things at my table. I cannot complain

Google
Large vegan/vegetarian menu, super nice people and great food. We ordered some Hanoi specialty food and 2 vegetarian dishes, had lots of extra to bring home. The place is full of live plants, some are currently blooming, which adds to the pleasantness. Parking around the corner in the neighborhood was easy to find. They got busier shortly after we came in, but we got our food at reasonable time m

Yelp
I absolutely love Vietnamese food. I enjoy learning about the subtle differences between regional dishes, and often find restauranteurs in Portland are open to sharing knowledge of their cuisine me. I was recently excited to learn that in relation to pho, soup from the north features a more refined, clear broth with minimal toppings. And soup from the south has a richer, sweeter broth with a wider variety of herbs and garnishes. The history of the dish is really fascinating, and most definitely warrants additional study. I've learned that pho originated in northern Vietnam, in Hanoi. And as families fled northern Vietnam in the 1950s, regional variations of the dish emerged based on availability of local ingredients and tastes. Armed with this knowledge, when I discovered Hanoi Kitchen is one of the few restaurants to feature Northern Vietnamese dishes in Portland, I jumped at the chance to check it out. Hanoi Kitchen has the appearance of being a family restaurant. It's a large, open space with lots of plants and the most gorgeous wood floors I've ever seen. It's a beautiful space filled with art, and has plenty of seating for lots and lots of people. A friendly woman named Kim runs the place, taking orders, making the food, and cleaning up! Her dedication to this restaurant and the community is impressive. And it's clear she's made an impact on the customers she serves. The wall behind the counter is plastered with postcards, letters, wedding invitations and funeral announcements from the friends and family she's served over the years. I love this sense of community as it show's Kim's heart is in both her work and the food she serves. Hanoi Kitchen claims they don't use MSG in the food they prepare, and all of the ingredients appear to be fresh and healthy - in fact, Kim even brings eggs to the restaurant from her own chickens! You can buy organic farm eggs for $5 a dozen! Everything about this restaurant indicates familial, homestyle cooking which is something I strive for these days. I love supporting restaurants and businesses who are invested in the communities they serve.

Yelp
So glad the dinning room is open again. Wish this place seemed to be busier, maybe they do most stuff takeout. The few times we have been here pre and post covid the dinning room was never very busy but the food has always been excellent. The crepes make a great appetizer and not really a meal in my opinion, or a meal if you want a light dinner. Over the years I have tried that dish, the broken rice, noodle bowl and several of the soups and I can say they are all worth it. We have never had anything we did not like here. Now they even sell farm fresh eggs for $5 a dozen (as of Nov 2025)
google avatar

Yelp
Another amazing visit. Always great and the broth today was extra epic! Ladies are so wonderful and they even have farm fresh eggs available for $5 a dozen!

Yelp
What's the best Vietnamese restaurant in Portland? And I don't mean who has the pho you like best. Vietnamese cuisine covers quite a range, and no place covers that range tastier than Hanoi Kitchen. Just look at there soup selection, all the classics, and just ONE choice of pho. Which I hadn't had in previous visits and now must sat BEST PHO in town! Very rich broth, strong on the spices, ample with the meats. Big bowl for only $14. Had a nice talk with the cook/cashier/waitress. Why is this place so empty?

Yelp
Some of the best Vietnamese food we've eaten in this town known for its long list of truly good Vietnamese restaurants. Nothing fancy about Hanoi Kitchen's location or its street signage, though the restaurant's interior is clean, spacious and inviting. The tall plants lining the windows let you know this place has been around for a long time. Best is the quality of Hanoi Kitchen's offerings. We are particularly impressed by the freshness of the greens and herbs in the pho garnish plates, as well as the soups themselves. Excellent mi quang, with perfectly cooked noodles, shrimp, ribs, and pork belly in a luscious broth. We are also fond of the bun thit nuong (vermicelli bowl with grilled pork), which my partner says is the best in town. Another favorite: the carmelized fish sauce chicken wings appetizer. Generous and tasty. Delightful service. Overall a lovely spot for a meal. A go-to place for Vietnamese food.

Yelp
My family wanted to try a new place, so we decided to give Hanoi Kitchen a try. We went during lunch hour on a weekend, and we were the only party at the restaurant. It took 30 minutes for the food to be delivered to the table. The pho noodle bowls were very oily, with significantly more noodles compared to the meats. Our teapot was ready to be refilled, and the server said "We make every pot of tea separately, so I will make it for you now." However, it was another 15minutes before the lady returned to grab our empty teapot to refill and said "Oh, I am so absent-minded." Our water glasses were never refilled. The indoor decor left much to be desired.... There were remnants of what might have been a nice plant, now a collection of dried up branches/vines. In addition, there was a spider in its fully-spun web right above the dining table at the entrance. While surrounded by notices and reminders that this restaurant has had to raise prices across the menu and take-out ordersd to stay in business, our dining experience unfortunately had not given us a reason to return again.

Yelp
I've never been into a Vietnamese restaurant where I felt like the entire menu hit the spot on home cooked meals I grew up loving. That was, until I went to Hanoi Kitchen. This had been on our to try list for sometime and we finally made it in. If you're looking for a true home cooked meal: I would order the home style meal. I chose the cá kho tộ and canh chua (braised fish and tamarind soup) and I was just so happy to feel like I was eating at home. The fish gets a little salty due to the nature of the caramelization and braise, but it was well balanced with the sour and spicy soup and white rice. The Banh Cuon is delicious too. We have had a few other items shared between our family and every item was well flavored and hit the spot. It's quiet most times we're here and the family who runs it is really nice. Definitely one of the Top Vietnamese restaurants in Portland. I normally prefer to cook at home but if I'm not and want Vietnamese food, I'll be here.

Yelp
Went on a Saturday at around noon. This place was empty, we were the only people eating in this restaurant. Not a good sign. The lady that greeted us was very nice. I think she was the only person working that day. We had a group of 7. She brought tea, and water. We ordered, I picked the bun Bo hue. Many others ordered Pho. The pho was ok, very oily. The bun Bo hue was not very good. No sausage, no beef, blood cake included. It did have fish cakes. I asked if I have ordered the wrong thing. She assured me I got what I ordered. Ok. As we left, we noticed a full on charlotte's web with a huge spider over a table. Crazy. This place is expensive, sub par food, definitely not worth money. Pho hung, go there, just down the street.

Yelp
The pho was ok, not piping hot for a cold rainy day in Portland. The wait time for your lunch was longer than expected from an empty restaurant. With an empty house, it was easy to casually walk around the restaurant to view custom still art on the wall for sale by one of their customers. Supposedly they are from a local surgeon who paints as a hobby. The prices were surgeon priced. Nice garden display in front of the window.

Yelp
I've been going here for over 5 years now , love the food. Love to support a local business family owned. But over the last year the price of the food has gone up (understandably from the economy), but the portion went down significantly also. A dish I used to have for dinner and left overs for the next day, I know finish in one sitting. The ambience and cleanliness of the established has always been iffy but I excused it for a while because of the pandemic. But it hasn't improved. There's so much stuff and clutter, even the entry to the kitchen . It makes me pretty hesitant of the quality of the food and cleanliness of the kitchen. Side note: I also once found the end of a broken metal tool in my food when I bit on it. Thankfully didn't damage my teeth, but I did eventually call to let them know in a calm and respectful manner, and they basically didn't show any level of concern. I've only ever been helped from one person and she's always been so sweet and you can tell works so hard to help with cooking and serving . But it's very harder and harder to justify coming here for the price / quantity size and questionable cleanliness.

Yelp
Food, sauce, to quality, this place has those and more. I favor the Bun Cha dish. It's actually better than the one I had in VN. I like it so much, I might have to name my next kid, "Bun Hanoi". Middle name, "Cha"

Yelp
Really the freshest Banh Cuon I've had since I was in Hoi An a decade ago. We got lucky and the rice crepes were just being made when we arrived. We also had Vermicelli Noodle Bowls- both the chicken one and the eggroll one were excellent! Portions were good sized. Their vegetarian options are numerous and delicious too! Really loved this family run restaurant and want to come back to try the rest of the menu!

Yelp
So sad to see them fall so far! Prior to covid Hanoi was my families favorite Banh Cuon location. We went by tonight and was absolutely appalled at the quality and service. For $12.50, I received 3 tiny rolls that weren't even 1/2 filled and the veggies were beyond wilted. I called the restaurant thinking this was a one off and the gentleman who answered the phone said, "that's what you get!" And hung up on me. I called back thinking we got disconnected and a lady answered and started yelling. So sad to see them fall so far

Mike L.

Yelp
try the special broken rice plate, service is mediocre due to lack of worker, to go is better choice
google avatar

Terry W.

Yelp
It's hard to fathom why this place isn't regularly packed. It's an emphasis on Northern Vietnamese cuisine and everything I have tried there has been excellent. In an expensive food town, with noodle soup prices practically doubled since COVID, the prices are regularly at least a couple of bucks cheaper on entrees and again the quality and care of the cooking is top notich. The staff is laid back, but pro. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Keizzel C.

Yelp
I would preface this saying the food is a solid 4 but the service is closer to a 3-3.5 for the wait times. But note when ordering at this restaurant he's only a one man show working all of the orders so just be patient with your order! If you do order I would say to order at least 1 hour of when you're ready to pick up. The staff was friendly and let us know we could chill inside if we wanted to as we were pending one last item of if we just wanted to come back. We opted to stay and he offered to turn on the TV if we wanted. ___________________ | WHAT WE ORDERED | + Crispy Pork Egg Rolls + Thai Tea + C1- PHỞ HÀNỘI (Hanoi Kitchen specialty beef noodle soup with brisket, rare steak, meatball and tripe) + F1 CM HÀ NỘI ĐẶC BIỆT (Broken rice with charbroiled lemon grass pork chop, shredded pork skin, minced pork, shrimp and fried egg) ___________________ The egg rolls were solid. They were on the smaller side of what i'm used to seeing but the filling was tasty. They place it on a bed of cabbage and a side of fish sauce. Meat was on the smaller portion side of the scale and meatballs were alright, but the broth definitely made up for it! The pho broth was flavorful and fragrant. I liked seeing a thicker type of rice noodle which was new and worked out well to absorb the broth. It paired well with the chunks of meat in the pho. The broken rice was a great dish to get as well since I don't see it at many restaurants. It comes with a large sized pork chop that had nice flavoring although a tad dry. The rest of the items were cooked well and the fried egg OMG cooked to perfection. Plenty of crispy edges while still maintaining a runny yolk over the rice. To help wash the meal down we got thai teas and they had a greater milk ratio to the tea but it worked out well. ___________________ Reading the yelp reviews before coming we were torn but glad we checked it out. Overall, I would say the food made up for the service and wait times. I'm not Vietnamese so i'm probably not the greatest judge but the items we got filled us up but don't expect too much of customer service. Not the worst thing in the world if you're prepared and order early in advance.

Yelp
Food was great! We ordered the seafood pho, rice combo plate and curry. Service was okay, we must have shown up when the restaurant just opened. This is a family owned restaurant so it was nice to see the generations working. Ambiance was calm very cute spot.
google avatar

Yelp
The curry is really good. This time I had their vermicelli tofu bowl and spring rolls. Big portions! No alcohol though but you can grab drinks across the street!

Yelp
Hanoi Kitchen makes my favorite vegetarian pho in Portland (honestly, probably my favorite pho anywhere I've tried). The broth is incredibly flavorful and there's always plentiful components and toppings in the dish. I also want to give a shout out to Hanoi Kitchen's staff - I usually just order to-go and am always greeted with a smile.

teresa m.

Yelp
we tried hanoi kitchen yesterday for lunch with friends, and it was great.....it's hard to find vietnamese food, but this hit the spot.....i had the veggie deluxe with rice, and my partner had the bun dao hu...our friends had dishes they loved too.....the environment is relaxing and colorful, and other folks were having lunch or picking up food to go....the service was great, the staff is real nice....thx so much
google avatar

Yelp
I haven't been here in a while so decided to check it out again. It's takeout only which is fine by me. I ordered the shrimp salad rolls, Panko shrimp and the egg roll noodle bowl. Honestly it's the best food I've tasted in a long time. The veggies are so fresh. Everything tasted so yummy! It's just the owner making the dishes so be patient. It didn't take very long. The outside of her place is being vandalized regularly so it doesn't look open but it is! Go over there and order a bunch of delicious items you won't be disappointed
google avatar

Billy N.

Yelp
All of these years I've been meaning to try Hanoi Kitchen and finally have gotten to it! With their vegetarian offerings I was amused to see how the full flavors of Vietnamese cuisine will be able to shine without the heaviness of meat to steal the spotlight from the different aspects such as the flavorful herbs. Well the Bun Dau Hu definitely didn't disappoint! It had plenty of flavors not competing for attention, didn't make ya wither into a good coma after, and was a great price. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Bottom Line: Awesome Vietnamese Fare with Nonexistent Service Got here at noon. Two other groups eating and no staff. Stood there for 5 minutes then one of the customers suggested we seat ourselves. Sat down and waited another 5 minutes, still no staff. Walked up to the counter and got some menus, picked our dishes and waited another 5 minutes before the lady came out of the kitchen with a take out order. Went to the counter, returned the menus and placed our order. Waited 10 minutes and the lady brought our order to our table. On the upside she was very nice and kind. Here is how the food scored... A1 Goi Cuon $4.50 - Good but not great. The cha siu was dry and tough 3.5/5 A3 Cha Gio $4.75 - Tasted OK but very little filling. 3/5 B1 Banh Cuon $8.75 - If you eat here, order this dish. OMG, it is fabulous. The crepe is so delicate. You won't find a better rendition of this dish outside of Vietnam. Tip: pour the dipping sauce on top of everything then eat it. The crepe is very delicate and the stuffing sometimes falls out when you dip it. 5/5 D6 Mi Hoanh Thanh $9.95 - Who orders won ton soup at a Vietnamese joint? My wife! ha ha - Another home run. The broth was to die for. Best won ton soup in PDX. 4.5/5 Finished our lunch and waited for the lady to come out of the kitchen. After 5 minutes, I went into the kitchen and asked the lady if I could pay my bill. She came out to the counter and I paid my bill. She thanked me for my patience. ha ha We would eat here again. Arguably, the best Vietnamese food with the worst service on the west coast. Check it out. Tip: If you walk in and there is no staff, go in the kitchen and find the lady. LOL

Yelp
"Authentic" gets thrown around frequently on Yelp. I'm not Vietnamese nor have I been to Vietnam, but having lived in Westminster, CA (the largest Vietnamese community outside of Asia), I'd say there's very few venues that are more authentic than Hanoi Kitchen. They feature an excellent Banh Cuon, if you've never had it then opt for the traditional version. The menu is extensive, but don't confuse it with those at common Pho houses in Portland. One dish that was surprisingly missing is one of my favorites: Banh Kot (Google for an image.) Conversely, I was elated to see Bo Luc Lac ("Shaking Beef"); people are catching onto this scrumptious dish as I've seen it on many menus. The Avocado shake could have used a bit more condensed milk, but was still creamy good. Prices are more than fair. There's plenty of seating and parking is relatively easy. Service was friendly, albeit a touch slow. Hey, they offer this unique concept that might be foreign to some Portland diners: someone comes to your table and takes your order. If you want something else, they come back. If you ask for water, they bring you some rather than point to a self-service trough. And hold onto your Vietnamese dong on this next one: there's no signage where to put away your dishes, i.e., you leave them on your table for someone who works there to clear. I know right. (Insert hand slap to forehead.)

Brenna M.

Yelp
Delicious Vietnamese food with lots of options. Very large and clean dining room and the service was very friendly. We had the chicken wings, rice crepe and salad roll for starters and all three were fresh and hearty. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
I did not have a very good experience here. The minute I walked in, you could tell the woman working inside was bored and didn't care to do anything around the restaurant. There were 4 dirty tables that stayed dirty the whole time while she and her husband sat at a table and talked and sat in front of their computer. No one gave us waters, and no one checked on us the whole time we were eating. There was no customer service at all, and we felt really ignored. I get it if you're busy and you're trying to accommodate a ton of tables, but there were three other parties of two, and that's it. The cart stacked high with dirty dishes looked like it had been sitting there for hours. With how slow it was, there should not have been that high of a stack of plates and bowls dripping soup to the floor. I ordered the Pho Hanoi, and it was standard. It wasn't amazing, but it wasn't bad. That's why I'm giving this restaurant at two-star instead of one. I was really disappointed because my boyfriend had wanted to try this place out. There aren't many Northern Vietnamese restaurants in the Portland area, and we wanted to try it out and see if there was any difference from Southern Vietnamese restaurants. When we went to Hanoi in April, there WERE such differences even with how they present pho, but nothing was special here. Super disappointed, please listen to customers and not treat them as if they were a burden.

Yelp
I have been meaning to try Hanoi Kitchen for a long time. I finally tried it today. All I can say is "Why did I wait so long?". My dish was so fresh and so good! I can't wait to go back. This local business was hit hard during the pandemic and really needs local support. Try it, you will like it!

Jay M.

Yelp
Just got back with a to go order. Menu prices totaled $25.00. When I paid I was charged $29.50. When I inquired as to the inflated number I was told they add 50 cents for each to go container and then add on an extra 10% to make up for the low menu prices. They told me they keep the menu prices low to entice people to come in and then add the extra charges to make up for that. Incredibly dishonest and probably illegal. Will never go back and will report them to the BBB tomorrow.

Yelp
It breaks my heart that this place is consistently vandalized. I'm writing this review to share that although the exterior is a bit rough, it's a great place to visit. I've stopped here for lunch several times now as it's the only place (that I know of) that offers authentic Com Tam (broken rice). Every time I have a craving for Com Tam, I stop in for an order. Because it's not ordered frequently, they don't offer the Cha (egg loaf) with the entree, but the Tau Hu Ky (fried bean curd) satisfies my Com Tam craving. The lady who runs the place with her sister is a one person show, so please be prepared for a wait. I usually order ahead and pickup. Other dishes I've tried include crab fried rice and the Banh Cuon. I love that they offer authentic Vietnamese cuisine at an affordable price - something that's hard to discover amongst all of the fusion options here in town.

Yelp
This is my go-to family owned restaurant when I want unique home-cooked Asian food. I am especially drawn to their signature spicy pho soups with ample fresh fixings, creatively presented. We always get the freshly prepared salad rolls for an appetizer. Friendly service and easy parking in the lot in the back, that leads to to their rear entrance. It's usually not crowded, and I have no idea why since the food is so good.
google avatar

Maggie Y.

Yelp
It's really hard to find a great Asian restaurant with clear gluten free labeling. They did it. It's also find great flavor without msg. This is it. I loved their bin Bui hue soup. Spicy with great stock. Only place I've been too without msg. I love this place. What a great find. I'll be back

Yelp
Excellent quality and taste... and you can have the place to yourself in the evenings (usually just one person waiting tables, so be prepared for a relaxed, laid back experience)! One of the major things to love about Hanoi Kitchen is the balanced Hue style spice that they capture into their dishes, offering wonderful blends of savory, sweet, tart, heat, and umami. We find it a welcome change from the typical Pho spots around town. Many dishes have familiar main ingredients, but add a richer range of spices and fresh herbs. While Hanoi is more spicy than some, not to worry, this is NOT burn your face off heat! Instead, Hanoi's accessible Hue style is a welcome departure, fun,... special, without being overly challenging. We have had many excellent lunch, dinner and takeout meals here over the years. And... wonderful staff! During our last visit, after we finished and were paying, I noticed something interesting on the counter in a jar and asked what it was. He explained that it was chrysanthemum tea. My curiosity must have been showing, as he put some in a pot and began steeping it, just so we could try it. It was yummy and very calming, a perfectly zen ending to a spicy meal.

Yelp
Best Vietnamese food I've had in Portland, up there with Rose VL. Their menu is bigger and they are open for dinner. It's become our go to weekend brunch place. We've tried several dishes and all are excellent. The broth is always flavorful and the meat is addictive! Especially Recommend the rice crepes.

Yelp
Always great food and service. Very authentic Vietnames food. Lots of great food that not only Pho, but they do have Pho and a vegan version too. They cook there food fresh so there a little waiting but the food is fresh not microwave or pre made. Parking lot in the back.

Yelp
The crispy rolls were so good!!! As was the vermicelli bowl!!! Tasty and still affordable despite inflation. Recommend! Come give them your money!

Yelp
Well you've got to love a place that has mainly other Vietnamese in the shop :-) This place is truly authentic, there is parking in the back so it is easy to find and get to. It's a nice open spot with lots of tables and a friendly staff. We tried the pho in both regular and with spicy flavors. They were delicious, the noodle bowls were also awesome. The quantities are plentiful so make sure that you don't over order. The vegetables were fresh and the meat was also delicious. This is the prefect place to go on those cold nights, when you need something warm and delicious :-)

Yelp
I'm constantly on the lookout for good Vietnamese food, missing the hole in the wall places that were frequently scattered around Reno. I'm often looking for dishes beyond the standard pho or bun, and living in the inner southeast, my options tend to be so-so. They'll satisfy a craving, but I haven't found anything close that wows me. I was headed to the airport and craving bun rieu and a quick Yelp search suggested Hanoi Kitchen. I was surprised when I got the how big and bright the space was. Bright accent walls of muted yellow and orange surrounded the large space (probably 15+ tables for four). The place was practically empty at 11:30, with maybe 3 customers in the space, a grandmother-like woman greeting me with her limited English skills and letting me know I should sit wherever. While I had been craving bun rieu, the depth of the menu made me reconsider. I was tempted by the crepes but settled on their homestule combo A, which was "CÁ BÔNG LAU KHO T & CANH CHUA TÔM" or "Catfish & Hot & Sour Prawn Soup" I was pretty impressed with this - a nice sized catfish filet in a nice gravy, some hot and sour soup with a big bowl of hot and sour soup with good sis prawns, and a small bowl of rice. The catfish was in a sweeter/thicker sauce than I had expected, but the flavors were excellent and the soup hit the spot on the grey, wintery day. Felt like a pretty traditional Asian meal - some soup, some protein, and some rice. Probably more protein than would be the norm for one pwrson, but that seems a reasonable accommodation for a US restaurant. I definitely want to get back out this way to explore the menu further.

Yelp
Short Story: An interesting Vietmanese place in a quiet area of Portland. Long Story: We came here for a friend's birthday and didn't expect too much. But we were pleasantly surprised at the decor and ambiance inside. The tall windows and ceilings provided a comfortable space inside. The service was also top notch and the chef made a special dish for me as it was not on the menu. I saw a Yelp picture and he was able to replicate it. I had tried to order a Vietnamese kaibi dish but they didn't have it. So the yelp picture was the next best thing. The service was superb with lots of coming over to ensure everything was good. The prices are pretty good too! Verdict: I'll be back the next time I'm in Portland.

Yelp
This is an un-assuming little joint just hanging out on Glisan. Unfortunately, they have been victims of Asian hate. They are resilient though! We stopped by for pho and also had the won ton noodle soup. We knew the place looked familiar when we walked in, and we figured it out they were on the news! The place is a zen-like. The folks are super nice and even gave us a free appetizer dish! The soups are where it's at though. The pho broth was deep and flavorful. The Won ton noodle soup broth was clean and savory. highly recommend and will be coming back soon!

Yelp
This mom-and-pap place is so homey. Owners run the front and the kitchen. The place was open and clean with Elvis music in the air. Hanoi Kitchen offers Honai/N. Vietnam dishes, unlike the usual Pho and spring rolls places. We ordered Banh Cuon combo (B1) and Bun combo (E1). Banh Cuon is warm rice crepe wrap with minced pork, dry shrimp, and black mushroom. Also came with Vietnamese ham slices, fresh cilantro, julienned cucumber, and cooked bean sprouts. We took a piece of wrap, vegetable and dipped them in the fish sauce. The experience is the combination of soft crepe, crunchy vegetable, savory and sweet all at the same time. Very good! Another dish we enjoyed was Bun (rice noodle) with grilled meat, shrimp, crispy egg roll, and fish cake on a sugar cane. It had lots of lettuce, mint, and basil. We poured fish sauce on top and mixed everything together like a warm salad. Very tasty and filling. The total bill was just $20, and we were stuffed! This place is a delicious cheap eat, good combo!

Yelp
This place is so underrated. One of the few Vietnamese spots that actually has authentic food choices you wouldn't find in other Vietnamese/pho spots. Please check them out.

Yelp
I absolutely love Hanoi Kitchen. It's my top spot for vegan pho in Portland and I proudly announce that to anyone who asks... or even if you're not asking, tbh. And it's not just pho - they have an entire vegetarian menu with clearly marked vegan options. It's an odd place that I find strangely charming. There rarely seems to be anyone eating there. Maybe I'm going during off hours? Who knows! As mentioned in other reviews, service is almost non-existent. If you want something, don't expect someone to read your mind or check in on you. Just get up and ask. Don't sit around waiting to pay. Go to the counter. If you know what to expect, it shouldn't bother you at all. Especially when you're eating their delicious, fresh, lovingly made food - everything else just seems unimportant! P.S. If you're reading this and you work here, bring back the spinning Christmas tree! It was my favorite thing 3-4 Christmases ago and I haven't seen it since!

Yelp
Do NOT park in the back parking lot. There is a very vicious looking dog that looks extremely intimidating back there. Not sure if it's to scare away customers, but if it is, then it's working. My daughter and I parked in back since there was no parking available in the front and we were terrified of the large barking dog w/ only a small unstable fence that could definitely be jumped over was in between us and getting mauled. We promptly left. Lots of other good Vietnamese places on 82nd to go to.

Yelp
We walked in after parking across the street on a rainy, Saturday night. The storefront reminded me of old Portland. There is a sign posted out front saying they don't use MSG. It was early, and they weren't very busy. We were quickly sat at a window seat. The interior was a hodgepodge of plants, art work, and foil... The foil that was dangling on the ceiling sporadically was there because of a leak they had earlier in the week, not because they were trying to pick up alien signals, or free HBO. They have a vegetarian/vegan section on the back of the menu that has 6 offerings. We ordered the Vegan Pho. It had a broth that was well balanced. The ratio of vegetables to tofu was perfect. The second dish we ordered was the Tofu Vermicelli Bowl (vegan) was fresh tasting and comforting. The crispy tofu was a treat. The vegan faux-fish sauce was appreciated. Nothing was very fancy it was just simple food. We ordered (vegan) Thai iced tea to wash it all down. Napkins and Sriracha are on the table for the messy people who like things spicy. We will definitely come back.

Yelp
DO NOT GO HERE EVER!! I CANNOT EMPHASIZE THIS WELL ENOUGH!! There's so many vietnamese resturants that are far better than this place. The lady is so rude and dismissive. Long story short I had to throw the whole pho away. The pho tasted bland and I couldn't eat it without sauce. Drove back to pick up some sauce and lady said "WE ARE TIRED. CUSTOMERS ALWAYS COMPLAIN THAT WE DON'T GIVE THEM ENOUGH SAUCE SO WE DECIDED NOT TO PUT ANY SAUCE IN THEIR BAGS. " My order was to go and ready in the bag and she didn't even let me know that I needed sauce or she didn't put any sauce in my bag. She didn't even say I'm sorry. Basically made it feel like it was my fault that as customer to ask for something I paid for. There's so many other places you can go to. Save yourself the disappointment. The Pho containers are flimsy and all the soup spilled in my car. WORST EXPERIENCE EVER!!!

Yelp
Fish sauce wings. Not too fishy. Not too salty. But the salty and sweet is definitely there. Finally some fish sauce wings that are perfectly balanced!
