Writer John Muir Explored Southern Australia — Here's How I Retraced His Steps

"Intrigued, the following day I toured Heysen’s estate, the Cedars, outside Hahndorf, a town that wears its German heritage proudly. Hans was a conservationist before it was popular in Australia, said a volunteer guide, Jo Kerestes, as we wandered the serene home and gardens. Heysen lived there with his wife and their eight children, like the von Trapp family. They were great entertainers, luring Hollywood stars and European aristocrats. Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh performed Shakespeare here. Anna Pavlova danced, Kerestes said proudly as she showed me a modest stage in the living room." - Travel + Leisure Editors

A wonderful day out at The Cedars. Beautiful grounds, lovely service in the small cafe. Susan was our guide, her passion enthusiasm and knowledge made for a fabulous tour. Reading some of the reviews, people are a little underwhelmed in their visit doing the self guided tour; take the tour it is worth every cent to hear about the life and background of the Heysen story. Highly recommend.

We arrived just to do an unasscorted tour of the gardens, but we managed to join the last tour of the day which included the home and studios, so interesting. Always something new to learn about this incrediable man and his family.

A lovely home and garden and interesting artist studios. The guided tour includes the house interior and details about the father and daughter artists and the family. Gift shop and small café available.

I was recommended to visit that incredible place by my friend. From my point of view, autumn is the most perfect time to go there. Due to bushfires we could see only Heysen's daughter studio and half of the garden. But even though I was so impressed. We took a self-guided tour, because we arrived too late, before they closed. Nevertheless, it was a good decision as well. We were all alone and could enjoy the beauty of the place and had a small picnic. I definitely will come back to take a guided tour to see the rest and know more about his life and creations.

Soak up Australian history at this wonderful exhibit. Allow plenty of time as the tour is great. Then before you head off have a coffee and cake both were absolutely brilliant. Perfect end to a fascinating visit.

I have been wanting to come here for a few years and so happy to have achieved my goal of seeing how Hans painted the Flinders Ranges; (from which we were heading home to Vic.) The house tour was fantastic- our Wednesday guide John was very knowledgeable. All the staff were most welcoming. I had bought my tickets on line no way did I want to miss out, it meant I could tag along with another earlier group tour. There is a lot of earth works currently in progress as a new gallery is being constructed. I look forward to seeing the old and the new together.

Have to admit this visit wasn’t my choice but I was so glad I went. I was pleasantly surprised by how lovely an experience it was! Such a loyally preserved capture of time by the very knowledgeable volunteers who keep this artist’s home, studio & family memories alive. Well worth your time but I strongly suggest booking in advance for the tour.
