"Intrigued, the following day I toured Heysen’s estate, the Cedars, outside Hahndorf, a town that wears its German heritage proudly. Hans was a conservationist before it was popular in Australia, said a volunteer guide, Jo Kerestes, as we wandered the serene home and gardens. Heysen lived there with his wife and their eight children, like the von Trapp family. They were great entertainers, luring Hollywood stars and European aristocrats. Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh performed Shakespeare here. Anna Pavlova danced, Kerestes said proudly as she showed me a modest stage in the living room." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Heysen the Cedars has been the most amazing experience for us on our few days of exploring the Adelaide Hills. The tour is a must as you will be enthralled with all the stories about Hans and his family, with the visit to the house, garden and studio. It was all riveting. Go early so you can spend time walking around to various locations where the great artist painted some of his brilliant landscapes. Everyone was so welcoming and happy to share a wealth of knowledge. Special thanks to Lorraine and Jo for their time sharing the great stories about this wonderful place and its people.

Beautiful experience, do the tour, do the Devonshire Scones and do the Artist walk. An amazing place, beautifully cared for. I heard everyone in my tour group say that they enjoyed their time at The Cedars.

Highly recommend doing the house and studios tour, the guide made it so interesting. The Cedars is a beautiful example of an early 20thC home, and lots of the artist's work on display. Then there's the wonderful gardens, bring a picnic! Allow a few hours if you can and do the artists walk too and see Heysen's gum trees. A wonderful day out.

What an amazing experience to visit the home and studio of Hans Heysen in the most beautiful garden. We joined a guided tour that started in the magnificent studio - all authentic paintings and artefacts of Heysen. Wonderful to stand so close to all these original works and to have everything explained in such detail by our guide. We then toured the magnificent house. Room after room left as though the family just stepped out for a minute. Unfortunately no photos were allowed inside - such a pity. It was fabulous to hear all about the family. The garden was ablaze with Autumn colours. We had lunch in the onsite cafe. Expensive and pretty basic but with a glorious view of the garden and house. The gift shop is stocked with fabulous art books and souvenirs.

I really enjoyed my visit. I just needed more time . I visited the studios, both from Hans and Nora. It's just nice to see . Also, did the artist walk that gives you some insight into what inspired Hans. It's a great walk.

Worth the fully guided tour for the background info on all items. My only beef was that it was such a large group of equally interested visitors, that it was difficult to get into some of the smaller rooms all at the same time. Great examples of both Hans & Nora's works, meandering grounds and a lovely little Cafe.

We had a full tour of the house and studios and enjoyed it very much. Our guide Lorraine was very friendly and informative. It was very interesting to learn about Hans Heysen and his family being surrounded by their paintings and everyday belongings. We finished this excellent tour with the most aromatic Earl Grey tea served in fine old China and a delicious cake. We will be back in spring for an artist walk.

Delightful tour and lunch on a beautiful but very busy day. The volunteers were rushed off their feet but did a fantastic job under difficult circumstances. Beautiful house, interesting studios and lovely lunch/coffee.
