How to Plan the Perfect Trip to Sayulita, Mexico

"Set on a private beach a 20-minute walk from the town plaza, this local institution helped establish the area as a wellness paradise. It offers a full schedule of yoga retreats as well as non-retreat reservations for visitors who want rustic casitas, a saltwater infinity pool, and a palapa restaurant whose menu is based on what’s fresh at the market daily." - David Shortell David Shortell David Shortell is a journalist based in Mexico City. Absolutely magical wonderful place! I was there on a yoga retreat organized by my yoga teacher in the USA. The staff is incredibly thoughtful and genuine… The property can be a bit steep if you are down in the lower Casitas… However, the payoff is that you can hear the ocean roaring all night! Additionally, they have many different body workers doing many different types of massage services… Excellent!

I stayed here last week and definitely got bed bugs! The resort manager wouldn’t admit it and tried to say it was mosquitos. I had bites all over my arms, neck, face and feet and I found many areas of bug poop and a few oval white eggs on the mattress. Another couple in my group had the same issues and woke up in the morning with little blood spots on their sheets. It was clearly bed bugs. They moved me and the other couple to some apartments in town and washed all our clothes for us. They also rented a beat up old golf cart to get back and forth between the apartment and Haramara. On the last morning of the retreat on the way back downhill to my apartment, the breaks on the golf cart went out while I was driving. Luckily, there weren’t many cars out at 8am on a Saturday so I was able to coast home safely and stop it on a curb in front of the apartment. I then had to hitch a ride on the laundry truck to get back to Haramara to check out. All in all, this vacation was terrible. While I hope that the management’s line about mosquitos and not bed bugs was just to doge liability, I fear they did not take the problem seriously and they will have bed bugs for a long time. I would never stay here again. For the money, there are much nicer, better maintained resorts. Several of the other people in my group had coatis (raccoon like animals) come into their rooms at night, open drawers and throw their things around. Two people got sick even without eating in town. I think even for the people who did not get bed bugs, this was not the restful, recharging experience we wanted it to be.

Incredible Experience. At first I was unsure I could be without wifi and in constant contact with work and kids. How could I sleep without a fan?! But I was so grateful electricity and cell service was limited. I could slow down and connect with my husband. Talk, laugh, hike around, and just chill by the pool with a book. The grounds are amazing, the cabin casitas are so beautiful in a natural and understated way. The best of summer camp vibes. The yoga clases were held in a stunning shala. The food and drinks so healthy, fresh and delicious and the staff all so nice! I love haramara!

I have been to Harmara 3 times now -- there's just nothing like it. The property is beautifully, lovingly maintained. The is a large open air dining room looking over the jungle and out to the ocean, infinity pool and luxe lounge area perfect for beating the midday heat, and a path right down to the ocean, where you can lounge on the sane or on beachfront lounge chairs. At lower tides you can go on long walks along the beautiful stretch of beach, and the water here is clean - not like the Sayulita beach. That said, it can get really rough -- there can be a seriously powerful rip tide and some very aggressive waves. It seems to vary a lot day to day.||The rooms are open air, don't have electric lighting (kerosene lamps are provided for night time), and the beds have mosquito nets, which would make you think this is a cheaper establishment -- but that's just not the case. Everything is natural, yes, AND incredibly luxurious -- the beds and linens are so comfortable, great water pressure in the showers, fresh floral arrangements in the room every day, the rooms are cleaned and polished thoroughly each day -- everything is just beautiful. I feel like royalty staying here, so much effort is put in to making this a beautiful stay. ||And if you practice yoga, the shalas (practice spaces) are just beautiful. One open on all sides with a sunrise view over the jungle, the other with a bit more protected, but view out to the ocean. Plenty of props in both to support your practice. ||And then the food -- you will be so well fed here. The staff are great, attentive and looking to welcome everyone and make it a great stay. ||I am so grateful that this place exists. I hope you give it a try!

Gorgeous property lovingly built by the owner over many years. Beautiful rustic and simple and yet 5 star food. Amazing beach below - much prettier and dramatic than the main beach in Sayulita town. The meandering path around the resort along the thick jungle and ocean views is one of the highlights. Wonderful location for a yoga retreat with the yoga decks, cool breezes and fresh air.

This is my second yoga retreat at an eco resort and I had a lovely time with my group and retreat leader. However, as a local guide I have to admit there were some steep setbacks at Haramara and I can’t say that I would return based on the resort alone. First, and MOST IMPORTANTLY— THEY DO NOT SERVE MEAT AND DO NOT STATE THIS ON THEIR WEBSITE!!!! As a yogi and body builder, meat is an essential part of my diet and not having it for a week (and not being able to make that decision for myself) was a tremendous setback in my healing journey as it took days to be able to make adjustments. I can admit that when I realized they only served fish, which this water sign does not eat, I was severely disappointed. When they tried to serve tofu as a “local organic food” I was disgusted! By Sunday afternoon and not even meeting half of my protein intake I went directly to the kitchen staff and told them I was willing to go purchase chicken for preparation at which they told me “No meat!!” I then asked for them to increase the protein significantly, which they did and then was satisfied with the meals around half the time. The flavor was there, however, mushrooms and slimy food is not my preference. The casitas were cramped and don't have a place to hang wet bathing suits, dresses or even a general place to sit and journal. I found the mattresses to be incredibly hard and the group would joke about getting bed sores. I slept the minimum 6 hours my body demands. There was no sleeping in. I think the best part of my casita was that it was all the way at the bottom of the hill, right by the ocean which blocked out a lot of the noise from town. Also walking up the hill—an average of 50 flights a day; up from 25– was good for cardio and the glutes. However, I could have easily stayed off site with the same walkability. (And more amenities, cluck cluck 🐓) Another setback was that the yoga rooms were booked to max capacity, so there was a sense in of urgency to class. The owner showed up several times towards the end of class to let us know we were running into her time for her private yoga sessions. Overall, I felt as if I was staying at a complete strangers home (and I was, she lives on site) without knowing the full rules. And of course as a paying guest to her home. Idk. Just feels very… blech for a vacation (which I don’t take very often) The staff was nice and tremendously helpful in all of my needs that arose during my stay. Such as needing a new blanket bc a critter pooped on mine. Exchanging to a later shuttle due to a delayed flight, and extending room charges which intended to close around 8pm the night before checkout. Lastly, they host other themes of retreat beside yoga; there was a divination retreat on site while I was there. Overall, I had a positive experience which is primarily in part to an awesome retreat leader and group who was super supportive in those first days when I was tired and lethargic from lack of proper nutrition. When they say they accommodate all diets—please call and confirm if yours is not vegan.

Very loud party music on most nights until 1-2 am coming from the town below. The pool area was loud in the day-time. Our transportation ( arranged by Haramara) back to PVR Airport was dangerous. Not what I had expected from a retreat. |Food was excellent as well as service at the resort. Clean and well-kept grounds. Nice yoga shalas. I enjoyed the salt water infinity pool and watching whales from the property.

I took my teenage daughter on a personal retreat at Haramara. We slept to the sound of pounding surf in our gorgeous cabana Obsidian in the jungle complete with hammock and outdoor shower. We woke to a fabulous breakfast, followed by yoga with beautiful views and massages at the tranquil spa. We spent time at the wild and beautiful beach sitting under the shaded awnings. It was a bit rough to swim but you could go around the corner to the next beach which was calmer. My daughter also went on a group hike and rode a horse through sayulita and galloped along the beach. The Infinity pool was a stunning place to hang out and chat with other guests. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. After 4 fabulous nights we felt relaxed and refreshed. There was as much or as little to do as you liked. It was challenging going up and down the steep hill but you were rewarded for you effort. I hope to return again soon.
