Overall, this was a disappointing stay. ||Check-in was underwhelming. In fact it was I who instigated the process and while the receptionist was polite, there was nothing warm about the welcome. For example, nothing at all about the hotel, just a welcome letter pushed across the counter. ||I’d expected the room to be small, but not that it would be uncomfortably hot. I appreciate there’s no doubt a listed building issue that means there can’t be an air conditioning system, but you don’t need a 10.5 tog duvet during the summer months and I’d recommend the hotel spends £250 per room on the new 2025 Dyson desktop fan with its whisper-quiet nighttime mode. ||The bathroom was also tiny and the toilet was so close to the basin that I - as an adult - had to stand to one side of the basin to be able to use it. ||Given the room temperature and the fact there was no fridge, spending £3.50 for a bottle of a sparkling drink didn’t appeal, nor forking out £2.50 for a bag of snacks. ||Breakfast was fine and the restaurant staff much more personable. I just had the continental breakfast and there was enough variety to satisfy most people. ||Due to traffic issues, I arrived an hour later than planned at 4pm and the 25-space hotel carpark was already full. Please note that even if you only drive in and immediately out again, you still need to provide your car registration to the receptionist or you’ll be penalised. ||Check-out was a more friendlier affair, though I did have to wait for the two staff members to finish their conversation before that was taken care of. ||Would I stay here again? If I did, it would be in the winter, when I suspect the rooms would actually be quite cosy. But despite its good location and clearly historic charms, for value for money, I suspect I would go elsewhere.
