3 Best Day Trips From Vancouver | Condé Nast Traveler

"Located less than a ten-minute walk from Main Street, the wood-shingled Harbour House feels like a cozy coastal home, inside and out. The hotel is decorated in a tastefully modern, unpretentious residential style—think, a modern take on coastal chic—and guests will feel perfectly at home borrowing a board game from the front desk or playing in front of the fire in the lounge. While the atmosphere is decidedly relaxed, it’s still an upscale hotel, and the real treat is the service. Don’t miss the free wine-and-cheese hour each evening." - Liz Humphreys

Our confirmation said our room was overlooking Crofton Farm but it was unfortunately overlooking a parking lot with some sort of garage, where there was a truck parked and a man working and grinding noisily for 2 days. Also a garbage area where staff took what appeared to be the used oil. It was surrounded by tall trees, no farm that we could see. Our room was on the second floor, with no elevator, only stairs which we had to lug our stuff up and down, including our full coolers. The room itself was nice, could have been cleaner. I wiped a dirty baseboard in tge washroom clean in 20 seconds. They had not been cleaned in a while! Upon checking out, the front desk clerk mentioned that there was a $41.80 or $48.10 room/food charge, which I questioned, but it was made out to sound like it was just part of the regular charges. It turned out someone had given our room number for their restaurant bill. The name they had signed belonged to nobody in our family. We had been there that evening but had paid by credit card. I had to email and call a few times to get it removed from our credit card bill. Our daughter ordered only a piece of salmon, no sides, strictly salmon. My husband told me later that we had been charged for a whole meal. On a positive note, our server mistakenly took my half order of food that I had intended to take to go - my fault for not saying something as we were talking. He and the kitchen very kindly arranged for another full order for me to take to go, which we appreciated. All in all, yes, we would stay again. We would book early to get a room in the front, check for cleanliness, and be sure to check all charges. And we'd pack smaller, lighter coolers! All of the staff we encountered were very friendly and helpful! The walk to town centre was doable. We had a great time in Ganges. Everything felt very safe at the hotel and surrounding areas. We paid just over $1100 for 3 nights with a deal on the third night.

We chose this hotel because of the high ratings on cleanliness. That’s of the utmost importance to us. Upon arrival, there were black hairs in the shower so it obviously wasn’t cleaned properly. They did come in and clean it right away. The next day, we came back to the room and the towels were changed but the bathroom floor was dirty (there was mud on the rolled up bath towel that we noticed when we unrolled it to shower and it was still on the floor) AND the bed wasn’t made. I also left a gross stained pillow on the foot of the bed to be replaced. I had to speak to front desk and again they did come and rectify the situation. For the cost, the room should be immaculate and we were grossed out. Also, no q-tips, cotton pads or slippers. Having these simple items would have elevated the experience and were expected at this price point. The bathroom is tiny. Not like pictured (they used a wide angle lens and there is no room at all in the bathroom). The balcony was cute. Nice view. No noise disturbances but we would not stay at this property again. The bed was very soft and we did not find it to be comfortable at all.

Made a quick 1 night trip to salt spring island with some friends, our first time staying at Harbour house- and had a great experience, we will absolutely go back. All the staff were friendly, especially Ada at Woodleys restaurant (really awesome breakfast bowl by the way). The hotel has a great location and really nice rooms. A lot of local salt spring island touches. Overall an awesome place

I can't say enough about our stay at Harbour House. From the moment we walked in until our departure, we felt welcomed and taken care of. Our room was large and comfortable, and the Scandinavian vibes were on point. The biggest surprise (after the thoughtful welcome bags at check-in) was the huge balcony with sectional and loungers... the perfect place to relax and take in the harbour view across the street. Pro tip: sit in the bright cafe area off the lobby and order breakfast from the restaurant. (The French toast was excellent.)

We just spent 2 nights in room 121 for our anniversary. Everything was perfect! The room smelt amazing, the bed was SO COMFY, service was amazing, food was great at the resturant, I could go on and on! Special thanks to Cheryl who worked her butt off at the front desk and also as a waitress in the restaurant. She had a smile the entire time, and was so friendly and warm. You’re the best Cheryl!!

Nice place, very friendly and accommodating staff. I booked a harbour view room and ended up with a view of the back parking lot, and because I didn't remember until check out the next day there was no credit available which was disappointing. My fault for not remembering sooner, but with no harbour view it then felt a bit over priced, but it was clean and modern, lovely welcome at check in and staff that gave us a ride to town to catch our flight which was greatly appreciated. We enjoyed the breakfast at the on-site restaurant and had a good dinner at the pub across the street. I'd stay here again, but pay more attention to the room I booked.

I booked Harbour House Hotel on Salt Spring Island based on positive reviews, but my experience was the opposite. The property felt deserted, signage was poor, and there was no clear indication the hotel was even open. The front desk staff was extremely unhelpful and unfriendly—no greeting, no assistance, just dismissive and rude behavior that created an uncomfortable atmosphere.|We didn’t feel safe or welcome and ultimately chose not to stay. Definitely not the experience one expects from a hotel at this price point. Would not recommend.

Great stay and staff was very friendly and helpful. Wedding group with the suites booked! Awesome location as it is just a short walk to Ganges. Pub across the street had great entertainment and hotel restaurant was good for breakfast! Thank you! Must stay!

Yelp
On the occasion of our Dad's 90th birthday celebration, Kelly, Maggie and the stellar team at the Harbour House really went above and beyond to make sure our family and friends had the ideal venue, fabulous food and amazing cake to mark this special day:-) Kudos and thank you Team Harbour House! -Ian & Lindsay Tarasoff

Yelp
This hotel was very clean and modern. The staff was super friendly. We had a large deck with lounge chairs off of our room, which overlooked the harbour and it was so relaxing. The only downside was when we went to make coffee in our room, all that was there was flavoured coffee, which we aren't into. Otherwise everything else was perfect. I would definitely want to stay here again.

Yelp
Such a great place to stay! I have stayed here a few times now and have been really impressed every time. The staff are friendly, the rooms are clean and bright, and even the cheaper rooms have an amazing view of the harbour. The hotel is very quiet, but is only 5 minutes walk from downtown Ganges. It even has a yoga studio in the ground floor! I haven't checked it out yet, but I plan to the next time I'm there. Across the street is kayak rentals and a good bakery. You can bring your dog to the hotel, and the dog-friendly rooms have a big green lawn in front which is very useful for late night doggie bathroom breaks. The best part though has to be the farm in the back of the hotel. There are all kinds of berries and veggies and some pet goats, and if you want to go visit, the staff will let you in and show you the things that are going to be on that day's menu! Incredible. And the food in the restaurant is extra delicious when you've seen the ingredients growing just up the hill from the kitchen :)

Yelp
We have been staying at the Harbour House for many years when visiting the island on the Lions International Christmas Ship. They have always been very accommodating and comfortable but we were very impressed on our last trip several weeks ago. The makeover completed after new management took over was comprehensive. Very modern. Our room was very comfortable and the bed was fantastic. Management was aware that we would be coming in a little late and they were kind enough to keep the kitchen and bar open late. Highly recommend you stay here if visiting the island.

Yelp
Wanted decent accommodation that was also pet-friendly so was happy to find a place like this with a view. Pictures of the rooms online are pretty accurate, except the pet-friendly rooms aren't quite as nice, had a pull-out couch (instead of two doubles) and mostly flouro lighting but of course you have to pay more, $20/pet. Was bit of a rub at $180 for the night. Staff was pleasant (though not super thorough) and on the upside it was really nice to have a big green space for him to play in, the organic farm is a nice touch and the food at the resto - candied salmon benny - was terrific.

Yelp
Room 104 had a patio with a fireplace that was warm enough in late december to sit out in front of and watch the sun rise over ganges harbour. The Jacuzzi came with a locally produced bath bomb, and the staff were all very friendly and helpful, offering to drive us to the ferries in the hotel's shuttle "Van Goat". Definitely take a deluxe room on the east side for the best view of the harbour. We had three meals in the restaurant and they were all amazing, with winter greens from their organic farm including some phenomenal endive.

Yelp
I loved staying at this hotel!!! The location was great for wandering into town and there is a little pub across the street. The staff were great and so accommodating. The price was reasonable and they were very understanding about travelling with kids. The restaurant attached (Woodleys) was great to grab breakfast and a drink at, but we didn't have dinner or lunch there so I can't say much more. All around, I was very pleasantly surprised with my stay.

Yelp
Well, let me first say that the bed was comfy and clean, and the pillows fluffy. The location was quiet. The hotel itself was pretty basic. It has institutional grey/green walls, threadbare towels, mass-produced wall art in the rooms, (pretty lame, considering it is Salt Spring which has about a zillion artists) and the restaurant is currently closed. There was no fridge or microwave in the rooms, nor complimentary tea, although there was coffee, which I don't drink, so I don't know if it is any good. The shower did not work very well, with pressure problems and temperature fluctuations. Aside from the problems, the staff were nice to chat with. I would say it was worth the groupon price I paid, but I am not sure it would be worth more than that unless and until it gets a facelift.

Yelp
Our bathroom was a bit basic, seems circa 1980, as was the HVAC. But everything worked fine and we had no problems. The bar/restaurant was a welcome place to unwind at the end of the day. Staff was friendly and helpful. Will definitely stay here again next time we're on the island.

Yelp
We stayed at the hotel for two nights over the labor day long weekend. We booked a harbor view room. All though the location of the hotel is great and the view from the balcony was great a few things bothered me. For the price of the room (170/night) I expect a few things with respect to the room, the furniture and room was somewhat dated, the tv was small and old, and the patio furniture on the deck was of poor quality plastic furniture. It could be a great hotel of they spent a bit of money on some small items.

Yelp
We checked in on Friday morning, check out on Sunday (Valentine's weekend) and we didn't have a shower and had to use the sink for 3 days! There was no hot water coming out of the shower and sometimes no water at all! We politely complained about it twice a day as they didn't seem to care to update us on the situation. Nothing was done! One of the receptionist even came up with a pretty lame excuse: "Maybe everyone is using the showers in the hotel at the same time..." We stayed on much smaller islands before and we never had water problems like this. When we left, we had to negotiate for 20 minutes to only get %15 off our bill. Needless to say they have no sense of customer service there. When you charge $150 per night, the least you expect is ti have a comfy bed (and it was) and a shower... As for the rest of the hotel, it is outdated. We only tried the restaurant for brunch, the food was good but the service very slow. So we ended cancelling our dinner reservation and dined somewhere else. I loved Salt Springs and I will go back for sure but I'll stay in another hotel!

Yelp
Best poutine and the freshest ingredients. They grow everything they make onsite and have a great group of servers and bartenders to chat with. Feel at home is an understatement even with a bit of a fancier dining room.

Yelp
Get an ocean view room! We did not and we regret that. The ocean rooms not only have a gorgeous view, they get cool air (the back rooms do not and have no air conditioning units). The rooms are small but reasonably appointed. The restaurant downstairs is a little pricey but the food is ok. The restaurant service was quite poor the night we tried it. The farm grounds are lovely, and locked indoor bike storage was a big plus for us. Location and proximity to Ganges is really excellent, too!

Yelp
Very courteous staff. Restaurant is filled w locals. Always a good sign. Dinner was very good, especially the seafood dishes. Rooms are adequate and could use an update w flat screen HDTVs. However, the beauty of the area more than compensates for the 90s tech. Overall happy w the accommodation. Staff is willing to go the extra mile. Nice to see these days.

Yelp
Terrible rooms for those with pets and highly over charged. Battered walls, dumpy furniture, not overly clean, no Wifi although supposed to be included. Total rip off as my son stayed in one of the newer rooms for 225 and we paid 200 plus a 20 pet deposit for essentially what is a 60 a night flop house. Worse place I have ever stayed. Compare to Laurel House in Victoria with amazing pet friendly rooms. Most disappointed for a pet friendly island. We were here for a sons wedding so a big let down. If I could give 0 stars I would, carpet is even dirty

Leisha N.

Yelp
Deluxe rooms are amazing, lots of beautiful little touches like salt spring island soap! Great organic farm, wonderful eggs benny and great customer service. Be sure to get the Deluxe rooms either 103 or 104.

Anne R.

Yelp
Solid place to stay on the island, or have relatives stay if visiting you. Ask for one of the 'newer rooms'. Older rooms are very basic and dumpy. New rooms are very nicely appointed, and if you pay a bit more you'll get a deck with a fireplace and a room with a jacuzzi tub. I highly recommend treating yourself to that (views, too!). I've stayed 10+ times and keep going back when needed. The staff are nice and knowledgeable, the food is fine although they don't do room service so you have to go down and grab it from the restaurant yourself. Great location and an easy walk from downtown if you don't have a car. Directly across from Moby's, a fun pub on the water.

Chris C.

Yelp
Fantastic! Delicious food, great service, a nice big patio over looking the ocean, and within walking distance from the market area in Ganges. I had the pork tenderloin wrapped in bacon with an apple reduction and gravy, served with mashed potatoes and veggies. The food was so fresh and well prepared, simply an amazing meal. My wife had a peanut butter based veggie rice bowl, loaded with fresh sprouts and she absolutely loved it. Skip the tourist traps and hit up this gem of a restaurant!

Harmony D.

Yelp
This hotel is full over a bug called silverfish which when I called front desk to complain they said they were aware of it and its an old hotel! We tried to go to sleep and the mattress frame is broken so it collapses on the one side. There is no elevator here lots of stairs. The room is not very clean and looks nothing like the pictures. The carpet is gross and needs to be replaced. No coffee in the room, ancient tvs, outdated electrical. We will be asking for a refund today to hard to move last night with our 7 month old baby. This was supposed to be our first holiday in a very long time very dissapointing!

Joshua F.

Yelp
I came to visit family on the island signed into my room paid up front in cash, I received a phone call 20 minutes after check regarding a family emergency off island. I informed the front desk of the situation after packing my things, They then informed me there would be no refund for the 20 minutes I sat in the room I would not recommend this place to anyone who has morales, policy or no policy there is an extreme lack of humanity here, I am not upset about money, money is replacable but the lack of care in such a small community I grew up in is disgusting
