This is my second visit to Hardy's, three years apart. The first visit, the food was exceptional. The wine pairing was a fail point. This time, I'm sorry to say the food isn't strong and the wine only marginally improved.
I'll start with the food. It's technically excellent, however on the palate it's not exciting or innovative. It actually borders on boring. It's safe, and I understand how that feels good when dealing with a broad audience, however it's certainly a missed opportunity for the chef.
The wine pairing is much improved, however a new sommelier with limited to zero knowledge of the SA wines he is pouring. That actually wouldn't be an issue, however he attempted to fake it and it didn't work. I would have respected it more if he had said he was new and asked what we thought of a wine. After four and a half hours of dining, we left without the petit fours as the staff were busy chatting at the front and never went to the kitchen for them. $1000 later, it wasn't a great experience and that's a real shame. The building is gorgeous, the ambience is there, unfortunately the staff didn't nail it, and that highlighted the weaknesses in the food and wine offering. Will we be back? I don't think so, for the price point it needed to hit the high notes and sadly it didn't.
