Admittedly I went on the tour because I wanted to see where my motorcycle engine was built. But what I saw was much more exciting than just seeing fabrication, machining, and assembly.
What I saw was American implementation of lean manufacturing processes. I saw Kanban boards, team work areas, quality, and just-in-time (what they referred to as supermarkets.) The facility is clean, with a lot of automation and people doing higher value work that a machine can't do today. The teams and work are organized so that the teams move to different tasks each day to keep boredom from setting in and to keep repetitive injuries from occurring. The teams gather at their team boards weekly in a sort of inspect & adapt session.
The tour greatly exceeded my expectations. I went in thinking I was going to experience some type of adoration of my favorite brand and came out feeling good about adoption of lean principles in American manufacturing.
If you're in the area, and like motorcycles, manufacturing, or both - then this is a worthwhile stop!
