At Harman’s Cheese & Country Store, scoop up crackers and a hunk of aged cheddar to stash in your pack before hiking to Bridal Veil Falls (via the family-friendly Coppermine Trail) or summiting Mount Lafayette (Skookumchuck Trail is a toughie, but it’s well rated by hikers)." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Very cute out of the way shop where you can get little gifts for that favorite person (even if that favorite person is you). 😏 Known more for their cheeses, they have just about everything for the collector - keychains, magnets, calendars, small toys, and more. Apparently they also recently added a clothing room where you can get t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, and woolen socks. They have lots of different foods including jams and jellies, mustards, spreads, maple products, popcorn, ... you name it, they probably have it. 😍

Their cheese is amazing! They also have cheese from several other local cheese makers. The shop has lots of New Hampshire gifts, and specialty jams, salsas, spreads and sauces/marinades. The ladies were so nice as well. Don't forget to stop at The Coffee Pot for breakfast and grab the coupon for cheese that is on the paper menu!

Harman's is a very tiny Country Store in the heart of the village of Sugar Hill. A small one-room family-owned store for many decades, the minute you walk in it feels like one of those places that time has just somehow passed by. It is worth stopping, if only for the experience of seeing what something like a one room store looked like over a 100 years ago. Though no longer owned by the original Harman family, it is still a place where are you can expect an old-fashioned, personal welcome from the staff. For years they have been most famous for their selection of cheese, in particular a sharp, well aged cheddar cheese. If this is something you like, then it is worth taking the time to go out of your way and see this little place. We have been stopping by Faithfully for decades whenever we happen to be in this part of the state. They also have a mail-order business as well, so it is easy to stay stocked up on their wonderful product. You will also find a mixed selection of locally made gifts, tee-shirts, boutique food items, and information on local events. There is plenty of parking immediately behind the store as well as on the street.

When I was a kid, we had a neighbor that used to serve a very nice cheese. When I walked into Harman's I tried a sample of cheese. It snapped me back to 1973. This is the cheese my neighbor had. I had to buy some. Two thumbs up!👍👍

Wonderful place to visit and buy locally produced cheese.

Stopped by this unique little shop to see an old friend and was blown away by the cheese sample. Took it to my family to try at Thanksgiving gathering and now I can’t visit my Grand Children without the two year aged cheese. Just the best cheese I have ever had. Sent gift packages to many this Christmas. This will top my list for next year as well. Keep up the good work.

Yelp
Came back on Labor day Monday. Got some sodas today, cookies, puddings, candied ginger. Cheese samples. And much more!!! There's Vendor tents outside today! The ladies inside are very nice and helpful always happy and greeting us.

Yelp
I came here just for the cheese! And I am a happy girl! There were a few to try and they even had samples for you to try before buying. I ended up going home with a really aged cheddar cheese from New York and a garlic chive cheddar from Vermont. I got both of these because they would travel the best back home with me. Both of them traveled back home so well and made the most delicious cheese board!

Yelp
Great selection. Very friendly people. Worth a side trip if in Franconia or Littleton area

Yelp
I've never been to the actual store, so this review is based on ordering over the internet and email exchanges. Not sure if they actually make their own cheese, or just sell cheese from local producers. I ordered cheeses from them in Dec 2022, and the cheese didn't have any cooler packs, it was just in a carboard box, and I got food poisoning from the Taylor Brothers cheese. The other two cheeses were good, but not outstanding, and only lasted about two weeks in the fridge before going moldy. This year they cancelled my order because I asked for cooling packs to be with the cheeses during shipment, but the owner sent me a link stating it's not required to use cooling packs. So instead, this year I ordered from Plymouth Artisan Cheese which is in Plymouth, Vermont, just the next state over. My Dad took our family there many years ago. They make their own cheese, and ship it properly, and quickly, unlike Sugar Hill. The cheese arrived in 2-3 days, and had several cooling packs in the insulated bag along with the cheeses. That's the proper way to ship cheese, IMO. I suppose if you are in the area it would be interesting to check out the Sugar Hill store, but I wouldn't order cheese to be shipped from them to any states other than the northern New England states.

Yelp
Amazing cheese I stop every time I'm in the area and take home couple pounds of cheese

Yelp
The final straw was actually (yet another) botched order-and no apology from the owner after our long drive. The register clerk was always nice but in our opinion there is MUCH room for customer service improvement here from the (female) owner based on our 4 years of shopping here regularly. PS: to others who want no-hassle dependable service & REAL sharp-cheese there are many other good national options on-line...particularly from the 'cheddar cheese' capital of Wisconsin.

Yelp
Nice little find with great selection of cheeses, jams, dips, and gifts. The 2 women were friendly and chatted with us as we picked out some items we wanted. This was our second time at this store. The inside is small and full of history. Parking lot behind the building is free. This business is on the main road 117.

Yelp
I loved this store. Having a vacation home in that area this is definitely going to be a frequent stop as we pad right by. Parking is located in the back or you can park right out front on the street. They have free samples and sell some awesome stuff. I bought a bunch of different kind of cheeses, a marinade, coffee grinds and some shirts. The cheeses were dip type, the cheddar and horseradish was my favorite as opposed to the cheeses and blue cheese mix that I wouldn't by again. They had a sample of the eggnog coffee which had a good hint so we bought a bag. I bought 3 infant shirts all moose Patriots shirts. They sell Hatchland Farms products there and you can return your glass bottles for a refund. Everyone that was working was very nice and helpful.

Yelp
Harman's aged cheddar cheese is the best in the whole world ---- period! There is no comparison. The shop is filled with cheese, area honey, cheese spreads, crackers, and a HUGE selection of some of the best jellies, jams, and condiments, and the ones I've tried were excellent! I've been going here since the 1970s so, I know. The only problem is that once you've tried their aged cheddar cheese, you will never want any other.

James G.

Yelp
Terrible customer service. They sell many great things here. We bought a number of items so we're definitely supporting the store with a larger purchase. Being cheese lovers, one of our items was an artesian cheese. When we got home we tried it, and it was completely inedible. Absolutely the most disgusting cheese I have ever tasted. I immediately returned to the store and politely explained and requested a refund. The manager scoffed at me and told me "it is supposed to taste like that." I guess she's never tasted the product herself. After I pressed a bit more said "I can't give you a full value exchange because it isn't our cheese." So although they sell some nice other products (we enjoyed the cheddar), the customer service is quite bad.

Yelp
Great little spot to grab gift for a loved one or if you're like me... go in with the intention of buying for others, but really buy for yourself. Delicious smoked cheddar!

Yelp
Harman's is a very modest local cheese store with a small selection of local cheeses and some other foods. There would be no particular reason to stop here but for their aged cheddar, which is something special. How special? It added two stars to this review.

Yelp
They had samples and i purchased, the three year old cheddar cheese, the rosemary spread and some sausages. Cute store and the help was friendly and helpful. Loved it want to go again.

Karen S.

Yelp
This is a small business with some good local cheeses. The aged cheddar was very nice of you like strong dry cheese. I paired it with an apple and it was delicious.

Yelp
Found a block of Really Aged Cheddar at a shop at Loon Mountain, Lincoln NH. I bought it to share with my colleagues back in Orlando FL. This cheese was one of the tastiest. Everyone wanted more.

Yelp
People told us, you like cheese? You have to go to Harmans. You just have to! Well we did, but a) the GPS really doesn't like their address so we turned around a couple times before we eventually found it and b) other than the two types of cheddar out when we got there, the rest of the stuff was not really cheese and it just sort of felt awkward in there ha We park in the back, and I knew the second we parked that this little cheese shack couldn't have much going on...But we went in and our hypothesis was confirmed. It is a tiny tiny little shop. Don't get me wrong, I love little shops and supporting local businesses, but this place was like a cheese closet. So I sampled the few types of cheeses out on a table, and tried one jam on a semi stale cracker and then my mom just looked at me and gave me that sign of, you done? without saying any words whatsoever. It was just awkward in there, and I am not really sure why? The lady working there didn't say hi to us or anything, and I'm sure she doesn't get that many visitors that I thought maybe she would have been more excited? Oh well..good thing there are many other cheese shops in the world! **Just wanted to add that I appreciate that the owner reached out on yelp in response to my review! Shows that this local business really does care about its visitors which is great! And Yelp, you should maybe change their listing to not being a cheese store since the owners says it is technically listed incorrectly!

Yelp
What a hidden gem! I stop here every time I'm passing thru the Notch. You must get the smoked cheddar! Yummo! Best time to visit is when the Lupine is in bloom!

Yelp
Very knowledgeable staff. Fantastic aged cheese. Friendly and courteous staff. I love finding great shops like this that love what they do and it shows! Keep up the great work!

Yelp
Great little country store with some unique local products. The "really aged cheddar" is delightful. There are also wonderful preserves and cheese spreads. Plus, you get a free cup of coffee while perusing the store. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Worth the trip! Great cheese! Be careful with driving directions using GPS - it never gets it right.

Yelp
Harman's is located right next to a shed sized post office which shows you how "small town" this place really is, in the best way possible. It shouldn't just be known for it's cheese. Mind you the cheese is excellent. When I went this week there were a few kinds of aged cheddar which were very tasty. I bought a pound of the "really aged" cheddar (which I found a coupon for a dollar off in a tourist brochure), there was an amazing smoked cheddar, a garlic and olive cheddar, and a few others all which can be sampled at their sample table when you walk in. What made me entirely happy about the delicious cheese was if I fall in love with any of them or wanted to try a new kind I can order them online and have them shipped to where I am. I wouldn't have to wait ALL YEAR just to have some more! The general store part offers everything I was looking for but couldn't quiet find any where else. One word, well technically two: Maple mustard! I'd been looking for it all over the White Mountains but I couldn't find any. This stuff is awesome. Not only did I find the maple mustard but also maple hot chocolate. They sell anything from old time sodas to dip mix and t-shirts. On the way out there was a box labeled free inside were the biggest zucchini I'd ever seen. That goes to show you that the town would rather share than have veggies go bad. Harman's is a little out of the way but there is a cute odds and ends place the next road over and a historic furnace just down the road. I thought the ride was 100% worth it. The views are amazing!

Yelp
I have family here, so I've been here many times, but I never get tired of Harman's. Let's start with the cheese: the best cheddar I've ever had. Only Cabot's from Vermont comes close, but even that's not as good as Harman's. They put a lot of care and effort into it, and it shows. There's a wide array of other products, some cheese-related, but many others as well. I have never had a bad product from Harman's. Visit it if you're in the area--the general store atmosphere is a big part of Harman's appeal. It might be a tad kitschy, but overall it's genuine. You can order by mail--write for their catalog or visit their website. Harman's is quintessential northern New England, and if you like that kind of thing, you'll be in heaven!

Yelp
I'm a bit surprised by the negative reviews. Yep, it is small and cramped. It's an antique home in New England, this is part of the charm. They sell many local food products here. The real star is the cheese though. We always have to stop by and pick up some cheese and not just for ourselves. We usually get requests from family. The smoked cheddar is one of the best smoked cheddars I have ever had. The regular cheddar is great. I've ordered the smoked cheddar, the regular cheddar and the cheese spreads by mail order for holiday gatherings. It always get rave reviews and I am always asked where I got the cheese.

Yelp
Great cheese. Friendly workers. The woman working greeted us happily and told us to help ourselves to the cheese samples and dipping sauces. There's only 5-6 cheeses to try, but they were delicious. I couldn't resist buying a block of the smoked cheddar! It's a very tiny store that sells a few random souvenirs along with the cheeses. It's worth checking out, but not if you are coming from far away. But there are other things to do in the area, so if you are there, stop on by.

Yelp
Nice little place to visit. As another reviewer noted, your GPS will send you too far! We also got turned around. Very small inside but they do have a lot of little cute things to purchase. I thought they would have more of a selection of cheese, but we ended up trying the smoked string cheese and purchased some aged cheddar. We also had some of their bottled kickin cow soda, it was pretty neat. The staff member who helped us was very nice.

Rebecca C.

Yelp
This is an authentic general store. It's a small place space-wise but they pack so much stuff in here! We actually went to Sugar Hill to visit the Sugar Hill Sampler but I didn't find what I was looking for there (things for a custom gift basket I'm putting together for Christmas.) However, Harman's had everything and more. So many of the dip mixes, jams, cocoa mixes, pickled vegetables, soups, crackers, condiments, jellies, etc. are actually made in either New Hampshire or Vermont AND are natural and not full of preservatives. Also they have the best cheese around. They offer samples too so you can taste and see. Please note: BRING CASH or a check book as they do not accept credit cards. Like I said, this place is the real deal, it's sort of like stepping back in time (and they didn't have credit cards back then!)

Yelp
Have been fortunate to visit each year, since the late 60s. Have purchased the aged cheddar and little round chowda crackers each time. Sugar Hill offers some of the prettiest views in the USA. Harman's Store and the Aldriches are NH treasures.

Sully S.

Yelp
What an awesome place. Like stepping back in time to (very) small town America. Great cheese and suausage, lots of jellies. I look forward to stopping in whenever I'm in the area.

E. W.

Yelp
Harman's is the quintessential, small town, New England place. They specialize in aged cheddar, and from what I understand, sell tons of the stuff by mail-order. I love cheese, and Harman's is my favorite. The smoked cheddar is to-die-for. It is their regular aged cheddar, but taken to a local New Hampshire smokehouse to be smoked. There are many other gourmet and locally made items, you'd be hard pressed to find anywhere else. It is a small shop, but is like stepping back in time... very nostalgic. If you're in the area, it's definitely worth a visit. And, you can combine it with a visit to Polly's Pancake Parlor just down the road.

Alison A.

Yelp
Love, love love Harman's Cheese and the store. When ever my family is in the area...we go and buy some of the best aged cheese! Love to take fall photos by the town hall and than go and buy a couple month's supply (3 lbs). Looking forward to the Christmas delivery of more Harman's cheese that my husband's company sends to each employee.

Yelp
this place is VERY small and kind of cramped. the cheese is only ok, i personally didnt notice a diffence. it was kind of creepy here too.
