I've flown into Philadelphia international airport before but as fate would have it, I now have flown into Harrisburg international airport. East PA and central PA. Crazy, ain't it?
What's left is West PA, which is none other than Pittsburgh, but that's another trip to be realized. For this trip to Harrisburg, I was happy that Harrisburg had an airport with commercial passenger service. And so, I flew from Chicago to Harrisburg on a brisk Friday morning on basically Memorial Day weekend 2023. Upon arrival, the airport was small enough to where I got in and out of this regional airport - not international, within 15 minutes. 20 if you needed the restroom facilities and pick up a Starbucks in the terminal before exiting. The airport was large enough to accommodate everyone and had about 10 or so gates within 2 terminals. It was clean and definitely felt small town vibes compared to the larger airport hubs. For the most part though, it was nice to come here to central Pennsylvania and thankful that the city of Harrisburg does have an airport with commercial airline passenger service instead of driving from Philadelphia or Pittsburgh. The experience here was nice and grateful to still be doing this.
The overall experience here at the Harrisburg regional airport was good and nice. Exiting and entering was good too, especially when you have a 6:30 AM flight and the ride to the airport was pretty interesting. It is a small airport after all, so the dining options are quite limited, but you can have your basic coffee shops and grab&go options like any other airport out there bear minimum. There is not a lot of places to charge your phone or mobile device, but they are. Best thing to do is to get a phone charger power bank and don't expect to have the plane have in seat power for you either since it's not guaranteed. I had a power bank juiced up and ready to go, so I did not need to have to charge my phone at the airport. Just in case. Best thing to have is the TSA pre check so you can get thru security pretty quickly versus the regular way. I enjoyed the small regional airport experience especially when it is easy to get in and out of the airport. Only thing about Harrisburg airport is that the rental car pick up area and the Uber / Lyft pick up area is located in a building literally next door. You'd have to leave the main terminal building and cross the street to make it there. All in all, a nice regional airport to fly into if you are flying in for business or pleasure. Or just passing thru.
The Harrisburg regional airport is located at 123 Main Street and basically sits next to the city of Harrisburg without much separation from the city and the airport area, which is interesting. Many of the airport's merchants accept major credit cards, as well as the airlines who use credit cards for ticketing and other fees. They have a public parking garage that commuters can use for parking needs. They have a small but I adequate rental car facility. Maybe 4 rental car companies here to accommodate all travelers coming into Harrisburg. Don't be like my friend who traveled to Harrisburg on Amtrak and attempted to pick up a rental car. No can do, unfortunately. Not sure if Public transportation service, the Harrisburg international airport, but for most convenience, rental car, or Uber/left would help you with that task. If you want to, check the Harrisburg, public transportation system, and see if you can try to get a ride on their mass transit to and from the airport to wherever you need to go. For the most part though, my brief time in Harrisburg was nice and it was great to have an airport here in Harrisburg so I did not have to drive from Pittsburgh or Philadelphia. Fly high!
5.0 stars for the overall experience. Clean and safe for everyone.
