Went with Mary to celebrate our 18th anniversary in style. Harry's is categorized as fine dining, so we decided to splurge. I now have to reset my expectations as to what fine dining infers. Name, not snooty. Appearance, not lavish, but clean charming beach motif. Wait staff, single server, no accent, attitude or David Niven pencil mustache, just a pleasant diner type waitress named Alexa, who couldn't have been more attentive to assure our dining experience was positive. The food was first class, all the way, vichyssoise for me gazpacho. For Mary. We shared a shrimpcargo appetizer and pear gorganzola salad. Mary had a huge ahi tuna appetizer for her entree, and I had their signature macadamia encrusted grilled salmon with a poppyseed orange sauce. They even brought us a complimentary pistachio bourbon cake for our anniversary. It would be tedious to adorn each offering individually with superlatives, because every portion was truly exceptional. To top it off, when the check arrived, we didn't need to take out a second mortgage. So, to answer the original question of how one was to define fine dining, it's like fine art. I'll know it when I see it, and I saw it at Harry's. Absolute must go.
