Yelp
If one could wave a Long Island wand
and create a restaurant above and beyond
with Italian profile
portions family style
then you would have Harvest on Fort Pond
First tip: If you've called for reservations (indoor seating only), line up to the left (please see the included photo) or to the right if you are awaiting outdoor seating.
Second tip: arrive around 4:45-4:50 before doors open at 5p but even if you're a tad tardy, you're still likely to get a place as there are ample tables.
Third tip: should you arrive with eyes bigger than your belly, keep in mind that you can divide standard restaurant orders by 2 as the portions are FAMILY STYLE (emphasis added). No biggie if you don't though as the take-home bags aren't the type of plastic garbage found at grocery stores or in whale bellies but practically a souvenir one can add to their Hamptons collection.
As luck would have it, the restaurant at the Manor where we lodged was closed on a Tuesday and the first place we visited had only a few barstools occupied and no hostess to seat us. So we found the only 4-star Yelp review in the area and the long line in the parking lot indicated to us that our fortunes changed by finding Harvest.
They opened punctually and cleared the lot being able to sit couples like us and families of 8 or more promptly. Our tushes hadn't even hit the seat when Laura, our outstanding friendly waitress, took our order for water and beverages.
Don't be sorry, order the salad of calamari.
It likely being our one and only meal while visiting Montauk, we took our server's suggestions and they were on the money. The most popular dish, the calamari salad, had fresh aromatic arugula, crispy squid cooked to perfection, and just the right amount of original dressing which hinted at peanut flavor.
The skirt steak was her second recommendation and the quality of meat was superb, cooked to medium rare spot-on by a chef presumably too busy and humble to come out of the kitchen and take a well-deserved bow to acknowledge such a great skill set.
Should your seating be closer to the structure where those with reservations dine, then the ambiance will be of both a gentle shore breeze beneath the gulls gliding above the array of orange umbrellas and the sound of light jazz. The farther one gets from the hostess, the more likely one is to hear a backdrop of Disney movie soundtracks playing on cellphones with plastic sippy cups crashing on the concrete.
In conclusion, whether you're a couple getting away for a romantic weekend or a family on vacation, the one meal you don't want to miss on Montauk is at Harvest on Fort Pond
