We visited Hasedera during a day trip to Kamakura. We went right after seeing the Great Buddha of Kamakura, and I feel a little bad for the Kannon statue that lives in this temple. At over 30 feet tall, it's one of the largest wooden statues in the country, made of camphor and gilded a glittering gold. It would be the leading Buddhist icon in almost any other city, but in Kamakura, the Daibutsu is just the obvious Beyoncé.
Hasedera is worth a visit in its own right, though, a beautiful, peaceful temple with gorgeous architecture and an elevated view of the seaside town of Kamakura and the ocean past its shores. We moved through quickly and missed the cave, which seems cool, but we enjoyed walking around the grounds, even in the September heat.
We cleansed our hands at the entrance and got mikuji on our way out. I pulled a kichi, a great fortune, while my husband pulled a hankichi, which is not so great. Not sure what Hasedera is trying to say about me, but I liked Hasedera. I'd recommend it if you're visiting Kamakura. Make sure to give the Kannon her due.
