I really liked the Hashbrowns Cafe. For one, I appreciate a good small diner with reasonable prices and wait service. Spots like The Clique (though it's more expensive than it used to be), Marcus Hamburgers, Hygrade Deli, Colombo's Coney Island, and the Motown Grill on Van Dyke
Hashbrowns fits in well with this group and I was happy to find it, as spots like these are increasingly becoming rare in the city, especially north of West Grand Blvd. You either have a very luxurious spot with wait service or it's take out only. Hashbrowns does its part to fill that void.
Hashbrowns menu is awesome. I love seafood for breakfast and they provide it. Catfish, Salmon, and even Tilapia are all available here. Again, you're not often seeing this type of selection at a diner in the city.
I ordered the Salmon Crocquettes with Eggs and Grits and it was very, very good. First off l, I loved the Croquettes. They were fried evenly with a lot of fish and a little bit of bell pepper for flavor. Most importantly, they weren't salty! They just let the ample portion of good quality fish carry them and I really enjoyed them.
My grits were nice and smooth and with a nice bit of flavor. They weren't lumpy or mealy at all. The eggs were very good too. It was a great portion of food that easily carried me to dinner (no small feat).
I loved the restaurants atmosphere. It's like a smaller, more low key version of the Clique. When I'm eating somewhere mid day, mid week, I just want to be able to gather my thoughts and get my food. Hashbrowns got the job done.
Also, the wait service was awesome. I got my coffee and water filled a bunch and everyone was extremely pleasant. It's a neighborhood spot that everyone respects and the vibe was appreciated.
It's on Conant street, which is one of my favorite spots in the city. It's a nice little hub of activity that I feel gets overlooked, with lots of restaurants lining the street.
Loved it and will be back!
