This Outer Banks Island Has 70 Miles of Wild Beaches and the Tallest Lighthouse in the U.S.

"At the Hatteras Island Ocean Center in Hatteras Village you can join guided kayak tours where you pretty much show up and paddle, and the center serves as a local hub for on-the-water activities and instruction." - Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel is a writer with more than eight years of experience editing and writing for both brands and online publications—with a particular focus on travel, fashion, and lifestyle. This is an interesting place to spend time and soak up learning about the ecology of this fascinating area of the outer banks. (also -- there is a great ice cream store NEXT DOOR!) lots of science exhibits and interesting items about the locals. I VERY nice boardwalk that goes out into the marsh. There are items for sale as well.

We visited this center in February and it was closed. The two stars are because of all the unfriendly signs not to park and the advertising of a marsh trail that is just a few meters long. It is a shame that so rich in wildlife habitat is being all to millionaires to bind second homes instead of prioritizing nature.

Great milkshakes! Made old-school way, so delicious! You can also buy t-shirts, mugs, and stickers! Girl behind the counter was super nice! I highly recommend you check them out!

The Ghost Crab event for kids is wonderful! Our guides were two College students who could not have been more personable, or pleasant with our son. They were knowledgeable about the Sea Turtles, the local environment and provided lessons to the kids in a way that seemed appropriately scaffolded to their individual levels. Not to mention, the finding of the Ghost Crabs, and Smore's. If your visiting the Hatteras area, I would highly recommend you partake.

This may be a small building, but it is packed with amazing displays and information. It has tons to see and a number of great activities as well. My family did the Marsh Madness and loved being able to feed and 'fish' for crabs. The staff if friendly and knowledgeable, making this a great place to visit.

The staff was wonderful. My niece really enjoyed the crab and campfire tour as well as the turtle patrol. She asked a lot of questions and the team was happy to answer them all. The only thing I would change is to update the website with more details about each activity and the requirements. For example we had a family member with a disability and it was difficult for her to climb the stairs to the beach. If it was noted she might have chosen a different activity that was more suited to her needs.
