Haunted Underground Shanghai Tunnels Tour

Enjoyed our tour with Caitlin! We had a relatively small group so got to ask plenty of questions. I also enjoyed being shown the pictures and videos of spooky happenings in and under the bar -- Caitlin supplemented the history aspect of the tour very well with spooky stories and footage. It was about as spooky as I expected -- enough to have me holding my husband's arm at points but never truly frightened. Be prepared to duck a lot, the ceilings are pretty low. The beer tasting at the end was very pleasant, and we got another drink upstairs in the bar afterwards to enjoy the lovely decor and atmosphere up there.

My fiancé and I had a date night and decided to the Shanghai tunnel tour for our 2 year anniversary. We had an awesome time! Doug was our tour guide and he was amazing! So much awesome history and just the right kind of creepy we were searching for!

After years of hearing about this tour, I finally got to experience it during a work trip to Portland. It was by far the best $40 I've spent on entertainment in a long time. Our tour guide Caitlin was excellent. She was very knowledgeable and fun to be with. She was generous with her time and volunteered to take pictures for everyone who wanted them. The tunnels were as expected, dark, dusty, loaded with things to hit your head on, and pretty creepy. Many people had experiences, including hearing singing, whispers, seeing shadows and even being touched. There was even a beer tasting in a new speakeasy, and the tour ends with a free beer for the road. Thanks for a great time!

I booked this experience after having gone to the Underground Seattle Experience, which was really very good. In Portland, the pizza very good, as is the beer. But the tour itself is dragged out with ghost stories and the tour is mainly under the pizza restaurant. Most of the other businesses have blocked off their underground area, so you really see a very limited amount of space. It is way overpriced for what you get. I had a good time, because the pizza is good. But you don't need to do the tour for the pizza.

Natasha definitely knows her stuff! She does a really great job of explaining the history of the site and talking about the different haunted opportunities in the area. He also also get a nice tasting and a beer to go! The pizzas is also really good if you get some to go when you leave.

Super fun! Good mix of history and paranormal. This feels more like a “basement” tour. When I hear tunnel I think of something different. This felt like an adventure under some buildings in a basement. I mean this in the best way and to be informative with the review for people who haven’t been. The pizza was yummy, drinks and beer are great, staff is all friendly, and the building is amazing. Natasha was our guide underground and I learned a ton of awesome Portland history from her.

The Shanghai tunnels have an incredible history and they do a great job of showing you around down there. Unfortunately most of the tunnels are closed off and so it’s basically a tour of the several basements with pipes and old wooden shelves. They are adding more stuff down there so it is improving and they gave out 2 beer tastings and a chip to trade in for a drink at the bar upstairs. Pretty interesting nonetheless. Pizza was delicious. Also ask to see the photos people have taken if your tour guide is Anastasia. I would have never believed them unless I actually saw them. Pretty interesting.

Ghost stories and history tours are quite different from paranormal investigation ghost tours. If you're hoping to experience actual paranormal activity, this tour is not for you. Instead, this is an upbeat guided tour through a section of the underground Shanghai tunnels, featuring replicas of items that might have been there historically, as well as objects placed there for their creepy ambiance. Along the way, you'll have the chance to take photos and learn a bit about the history. If you're interested in history and ghost stories, you might enjoy this experience—I certainly enjoyed the historical aspects. However, if you're serious about exploring paranormal activity, this tour won't meet your expectations. For a truly thrilling paranormal experience, I highly recommend a trip to Gulley’s Butcher Shop in Astoria. Be prepared for some serious activity there!
