I know this is a nonprofit, so I’m trying to be fair, But this was a crazy experience for us. We live on the island so we were looking to reschedule since it had been raining for two days and there was a flood watch. Even with pouring down rain they did not reschedule/refund tickets. (you only get a refund if they cancel) It was a little unclear where we were supposed to meet. there were no specific signs that we saw. Some people stood under the awning by Starbucks, and another group stood at the end of the Monkey Pod restaurant near the tracks, in the rain. Once the train showed up and the other passengers disembarked, we were handed a Ziploc bag with our tickets, a little bit of candy and some souvenir POGs, which was nice. The train staff was very friendly and apologetic. Luckily, we took a towel, a poncho and our umbrella because as the train moved, the rain would hit us. One of the train employees tried to wipe the seats down for everyone with a towel, however, one gentleman was wearing an all white outfit, and some of the paint from the seat was rubbing off on his jacket. All the passengers were soaked and because of the time of year, cold. Their employees were drenched.
The narrator didn’t narrate the whole first half because the microphone kept shorting out in the rain and shocking her. We did the Ko Ólina pick up, so we left the station to the left and the only thing you see going in that direction Is overgrown grass, homeless encampments, rusted grocery carts and the back of buildings painted with graffiti. There might’ve been more historical significance to the area, but without narration that’s all you’re looking at.
At the end of the first leg, you can get out and they gave us only six minutes to go inside the Gift Shop, which is very minimal. They had snacks and 2 restrooms. There was at least 20 people inside trying to use the restrooms. (Very small space) They told everyone on the train that the miniature train museum was closed, but in fact it was open. (Check the website) So I ran in there quickly, and This is one reason why I gave an additional star. The miniature train museum was so cool and the kids would’ve really enjoyed it. Check the times that it opens and closes because it closed shortly after we left the station at 3 PM, so if the train is running late, we would’ve definitely missed it. I’m not sure why they told everyone it was closed. Once back on the train, we go back the way we came, seeing all of the same things, but once we reached the original location, they continued on through the golf course to the other side, where you get to see the coastline. With it being rainy, it wasn’t the spectacular views that you see in their advertisement, but it was still nice to see the ocean and the coast. We even saw whales. But that was probably ten minutes of the entire trip. Once we headed back to the station, the same way we just came, we disembarked. My husband was the last one to get off the train, and it was so rainy that after everyone came off the train trampled through the mud, he slipped off the last step, falling face first and was covered head to toe in mud. Thankfully, he was OK and only bruised his leg and maybe his pride, but there was some children and elderly people that could’ve been really bad. No one checked on him.
In summary, IMO, They should have rescheduled or refunded the tickets when it was raining that bad. This is not the typical Hawaii sprinkle that we get daily, this was full on rain. It was not enjoyable and the ocean views that you would normally get, you didn’t. We were all soaked and cold. The girl getting shocked, and my husband falling, proved that that was a potentially dangerous situation. The city needs to clean up all that debris and support this nonprofit and its efforts to show Hawaii while taking a fun train ride. Even if the rain wasn’t happening, I can’t say that I would spend the money again to do that. There wasn’t enough of the coast view or enough time to look at their museum to make it worthwhile.
