On the Grid : Hawker Hall

"Hawker Hall is a new addition to Windsor and it is a great one. The fourth restaurant from the Lucas group after Chin Chin, Kong and Baby, all of which worth going to if you get the chance. Hawker Hall, as the name suggests, is a large hall (seating 160) with Malaysia’s and Singapore’s best hawker market dishes, with a few other Asian influences. The buzz of the open kitchen, the people, and the music make it our new regular spot. FYI: There are no bookings for small groups so get in early!" - Self-Titled

It was a great experience with beautiful food and very welcoming service and atmosphere. It was on sat and the live DJ on and music was great ! It’s was the curry beef Rendang to make us to come back to dine in this time. We didn’t order much of the snacks selection except the salt and pepper calamari yummy. For the drink we orders two beautiful cocktails the classic margarita, but didn’t have any Ganish, which is a little bit sad but with the whiskey sour it was bang on - we love it . Overall, the staff are very friendly that come and check with us with our meal and how it going, which is very good! And it was a fantastic night out with friends or a group of friends. They have lots of beautiful sitting section. One last thing it is the Nasi Goreng fried rice is a little bit spicy. They should ask us that. Can we eat spicy or not and to make sure not too spicy for other customers preference. That’s all.

We visited this restaurant to celebrate our 7th anniversary, but unfortunately, the experience didn’t meet our expectations. We chose the set menu and spent around $140 AUD for shared dishes. From the first bite, my partner mentioned the food was too salty, but I wanted to give the next dishes a chance. Sadly, the following plates were just as heavily seasoned — overwhelmingly salty and difficult to enjoy. We even had to return some because they were inedible. The dessert portion was also quite small for sharing. In the end, we left unsatisfied and had to go to Yo Chi. Disappointed, especially considering it was a special night for us.

Have a weakness for Malaysian food and decided to check Hawker Hall. The ambience and service was exceptional. The Rendang and the Bombe Alaska stood out while the rest was okay. The service was truly good and made the place.

Fun, relaxed dining. Family, friends and even date appropriate. Interesting concept for pan-Asian fusion. Even got kokkis on the dessert! Favourite dishes were the beef randang (absolute melt-in-mouth beef), fried eggplant tofu, and laksa fried rice. A stand out cocktail was the spicy mango. I wish portions were a bit larger, though I think the price for dishes were fair.

Google
Hawker style restaurant in the heart of Windsor Melbourne, opposite Mr Miyagi and next to Tombo Den, lots of seating inside, lively and buzzing restaurant. Seating in high chairs and booths, Unfortunately the food was average in comparison to some other hawker style restaurants with Malaysian and Singaporean food.

Google
Loud and vibrant, but the food wasn't up to the price. Most dishes are small, or too salty or lack of the core ingredients. Such as the CKT had 3 small prawns, too much soy and hardly any sausage. Bbq pork bun was mini sized. Only dishes of any value was the beef dumplings and chicken salad.

Yelp
We had our best meal in Melbourne at Hawker Hall. Make a reservation if you can because it gets packed quickly. Luckily we were able to snag the last seats at a communal high top table before their next reservation came in. The interior has lots of brick and is extremely hip. They're super cautious of allergies, asking at the start of the meal, supplying a color-coded water cup to those who have them, and carefully denoting which menu items are a no-go. The attention to detail and caution was extremely appreciated and shows that they run a tight ship. The menu is Asian with a modern twist. They're really about their craft beer selection too. Family style is the name of the game. They'll course everything out as it's ready and the dishes are served in small to mid-size shareable portions. Sadly I can't remember what we ordered (5 months ago) but what I do remember is that everything was delicious!

Yelp
We enjoyed dinner at the counter on a very busy night. Service was excellent. Watching the chefs in the open kitchen was amazing. The food was delicious from start to finish. The only reason for not giving 5 stars was the service was slightly off. Had another event to get to and had trouble getting the check delivered and paying the bill quickly due to a seemingly long chat by our waitress with another employee. Highly recommend these 4 dishes we enjoyed: *Roti Canai with peanut curry sauce and garlic chana daal *Prawn & ginger dumpling with soy & black vinegar caramel *Char Kway Teow rice noodles with prawns, lup cheong & smoky soy *Penang duck Curry with peanuts and eggplant

Yelp
Really great find on Chapel Street this evening. The food was amazing, the atmosphere very trendy and the service was spot on. But as with everywhere I eat it is the company tonight that made this place a hit. It was their favorite place and I can see why. The only less than perfect moment was the fried apple pie, since I lived in a apple growing region this dessert just didn't match up to what I am accustomed to.

Yelp
4.5. Twosheds has been anticipating a visit to Hawker Hall, as it came highly recommended by close friends. Expectations were high as we had dined at sister restaurant, Chin Chin, on a number of previous occasions. The high expectations were warranted. The vibe here is fantastic. Seriously expensive industrial chic fitout and great low key, old school house and pop music pumps out to a 25-32 something crowd. Make no mistake, this placed is packed every night for dinner (if you want no queue, come for lunch). The food arrives quickly. And service is fast, attentive, friendly and efficient. We dined on dumplings to start, which are fusion Asian, as is the case across menu. All the Malaysian, Chinese and pan Asian classics are brought to the fore here. The pork and chive wonton with chilli and black bean were a serious highlight, with the astringent black bean setting off the delicate fat in the pork meat. Spring rolls are delicately filled and fried with the best ingredients. The throughput of the kitchen, and quality emanating from it, is astounding given the size of the place. Small details are apparent though such as green chilli in the lovely soy. The char Kway Teow is faithful to its Malaysian roots, but has a special freshness through use of more sprouts which was quite enticing. As the food arrived, the music from the DJ spinning discs got better and better (more 80s). Next to arrive were the Malaysian-style chicken skewers. The peanut sauce is more peanut than sauce here: super stuff. I'll refrain from later dishes but suffice to say, they were as good as the earlier ones. The Twosheds gang ordered from the "wine off the tap" menu here for drinks, which is great value. We drank a Riesling/Grigio blend and a Pinot, which arrived in carafes. The wines on the drinks list proper are a bit pricey. You must give this place a try. 4.5

Yelp
Great atmosphere, live music and good food. What more could you ask for? We got the "feed me" option and made it through 3 starters, two mains and two deserts. The only thing I didn't love was the date pudding it was very sweet but dates just aren't my thing.

Yelp
I wanted to like it. Nay. I wanted to LOVE it, but my heart just won't do it. We strolled in to Hawker Hall on a Tuesday at around 6pm and asked if we could nab a table for the more reasonable dinner hour of 7pm - the host was incredibly kind and agreeable. Wow. Considering the never-ending lines I had heard I was surprised of the ease to get in. When we were seated we immediately ordered cocktails - a Sea Breeze for me and a Pisco Sour for my other half. The Sea Breeze was a bit lacklustre (but perhaps I just need more punch to my cocktails) but the Pisco Sour, despite the curious addition of pineapple juice, was rather delicious. The very-awesome waiter who looked after us for the evening recommended we share four to five dishes. Because of the endless mentions in other Yelp reviews, we ordered: + Popcorn chicken + Char Siu Steam Bun + Grilled beef short rib and Chicken Tikka Masala (on the waiter's suggestion.) The popcorn chicken and grilled beef short rib were both terrific. The chicken was super tangy and a great snack to go with drinks while the beef short rib was cooked to perfection, breaking apart when we stuck a fork in. Unfortunately the other two dishes were a bit dull. Neither of them had flavour and, dare I say it, felt a bit like they had been reheated from the morning. They just didn't have that usual flavour explosion that you expect from sister venues Kong or Chin Chin. Look, you have to go because soon enough you'll be the only one left in Melbourne who hasn't. But if you're looking for very, very awesome Asian-fusion food, I'd suggest sticking with the classics (Cookie, Chin Chin and my personal favourite Colonel Tans.)

Yelp
I absolutely loved this place. We live nearby and had been to Chin Chin before and loved it, but always hated the journey/long wait etc. A friend was visiting and insisting to try here, so we went (despite my long-hesitation due to the menu seeming quite unfamiliar). On a weeknight, we got a table at 8pm in about 15min wait. The place feels just like Chin Chin but with a more southside, rustic/hipster feel. We opted for the Feed Me ($66pp) option with sharing plates of: Curried Potato Cakes, Prawn Ginger Dumplings, Chicken w/ Peanut Sauce, Malay Shredded Chicken Salad, Chicken Tikka w Rice, Baked Salmon w Rice, Special Fried Rice, Malay Coconut Beef, Beef/Bean Stiry Fry, Green Beans, and Ice Cream. Matched with a bottle of white wine, everything was superb. We had a fantastic meal, experience, service and overall time. I would make this my go-to rather than dream about Chin Chin. Same deal for me, and right next door!

Yelp
I was pretty impressed with this very new addition to Chapel St - it's a very cool space, the staff are pretty damn sweet and the food was tasty. But not mind blowing, I have to say. I can't remember how I'd heard about Hawker Hall (probably Yelp) and so when we were in the area, we decided to head here for some mid-afternoon light bites and drinks. We got a table for 3 easily on a Monday afternoon (thank god) and I've got to say, the place is really nice inside. High roof, cool signage on the walls (except for "Forever Independent" which I thought was a bit too much). The menu is pretty massive but is split into sections so it's easy to navigate. The waitress talked us through it but as we were just in for light bites we didn't really need that - we just stuck to the smaller dishes. The waitress took my menu away to mark dairy allergy items which was super helpful actually - I was more concerned with the drinks menu as there was a drink with MILO (!!!) in it which she got made for me without milk and it was awesome. (I've been living away from Melbourne for too long, obviously). We ordered: popcorn chicken, prawn & ginger dumplings, braised oxtail dumplings, roti canai with eggplant sambal. Everything arrives at its own pace and overall, the food was good. Personally I didn't like the braised oxtail dumplings but the prawn & ginger were the absolute highlight. Roti canai was pretty standard and I didn't get a chance to try the chicken as I was too stuffed from the Milo drink. Our bill came to about $70 for three of us with some beers. While I definitely wasn't disappointed about the food, I just wasn't as impressed as I was hoping to be. Maybe if we were in for a proper meal I'd change my mind.

Yelp
Late night bustling hawker markets in Malaysia and Singapore form the inspiration behind the latest addition from the team behind Chin Chin and Kong. Hawker Hall's very name describes it well; classic hawker market-style dishes in a large open warehouse, hall if you will, venue. The space is amass with seating, with exception to the kitchen in the rear corner and the bar running along part of one side, there is little floor space that isn't taken up by small tables or booths. Keeping with the market hall vibe, the interior design is simple with white painted brick walls, exposed timber beams and hanging light bulbs. A group of lighted shop signs hanging from one wall build on the night market atmosphere. Those that are familiar with sister venue Chin Chin, and many other Asian Fusion restaurants, will not be surprised at the mammoth food menu. The menu is divided into over a dozen groups of dishes, such as dumplings and buns, satay BBQ, noodle, rice, curries and stir fries. There is a "Feed Me" option for the indecisive which consists of a selection of random dishes from the menu, and was naturally opted for on this visit. Highlights include curried potato cakes, prawn and ginger dumplings, Northern Indian goat curry, satay pork kebabs and the "Many Treasure" layered-jelly dessert. It is hard to describe, but although the dishes were of a high quality with well-balanced flavours, it felt like there was something missing. The drinks menu is equally gigantic with an extensive cocktail, wine and beer selection. A feature point of the bar is the long row of no less than 25 beer taps. Service was excellent especially during the busy Saturday night peak with waitstaff making time to explain the components of each dish as they came out. The loud, pumping dance music from a live DJ may not be for everyone and at times can be difficult to have a conversation, this visit was on a Saturday night and week nights may be quieter. Overall, Hawker Hall is off and running to a great start to bringing that renowned Chin Chin charm to the south.

Yelp
My fourth visit to Hawker Hall and the best experience of the lot. The portions seemed to have got larger and Rice was included with our curries which was an added bonus. We ordered the Beef Randang which was flavourful and rich, enjoyable. We also got the Spicy Portuguese chicken curry which is spicy! Also enjoyed this though my favorite curry out of the two was the beef Randang. The Nasi Goreng was authentic and packed full of flavour. A great selection of beer on menu, I was very pleased to see a favourite of mine: Quiet Deeds Lamington Ale, so good! 4 dishes including 3 rounds of drinks came to $120, decent value and good food. Recommended to tame those South East Asian cravings.

Yelp
Love the authenticity Hawker Hall delivers with it's Singaporean-take on food in a beer hall. The first time I visited I had the Portuguese Devil Chicken Curry (very hot!) but oh so delicious. So on my visit last night I went for a mix of a few things. The dumplings here are so so good! I especially like the prawn & ginger dumplings w/ soy & black vinegar caramel - YUM! I also really enjoyed the nyonya style fried popcorn chicken with its dipping sauce, satay BBQ beef and the super fresh stir fry! Drinks here are great too! I'd recommend coming with a group of people so you can all order a couple of things and share :)

Yelp
Hawker Hall is great value for money! With the DJ pumping tunes, roomy restaurant and attentive, knowledgeable and lovely staff, all that is left to do is to enjoy the food. What a treat it is. I highly recommend the $66 banquet if you're hungry, if you struggle to eat large amounts of food, then this is not for you. It's essentially all you can eat! The prawn and ginger dumpling with soy and black vinegar caramel and the roti with peanut curry sauce and garlic chana dal are delicious and tender. The nyonya style fried popcorn chicken is one of those highlight dishes that rolls your eyes backwards with excessive head nodding. The roast pork belly with lettuce cups, jalapeños, cucumber and yellow plum sauce impresses, with the pork belly being soft as butter but nailing the crackle. This dish is fun to put together and eat. The next part is one dish that elevates Hawker to a straight 5-star restaurant. The stir fry wagyu beef and cauliflower with Sichuan pepper, chillies and cashews was amazing! It is rare to find a dish that is this tasty that you start to question how it is done, eyeing off every detail and jumping in excitement. If there is one dish you have at Hawker Hall, this is the one. This dish was accompanied with cucumber, mint and shallot salad with cumin and coconut yoghurt dressing and choi sum with ginger and oyster sauce. Perfect side dishes that take this experience to a new level. Lastly, the yellow curry egg noodle, beef brisket, peanuts and sate was next. At this point, our stomachs were waving the white flag reluctantly. This dish was sweet, tender and a perfect end to the savory part of the banquet. Dessert ended with rice pudding, puff rice crumble with spiced pineapple. This was tasty; however, my heart was set on the Milo dinosaur sundae with Milo biscuit. Unfortunately, this was not the case and will be looking forward to treating myself to the sundae on the next visit. The non-alcoholic drinks are refreshing, so go ahead and choose between the frozen young coconut crush or the lychee soda if you don't feel like alcohol. I initially had an issue with my cup that had water which was dirty, but not much else to criticise. Hawker Hall offer a generous banquet that is hard to beat. The quality of the food vs cost ratio is admirable.

Yelp
The newest addition to the Lucas's empire is Hawker Hall. Situated in the trendy Windsor end of Chapel Street, a hawker style eatery inspired by the streets of Singapore and Malaysia. Hawker Hall is a huge space, and the fit-out is pretty spectacular, with exceptionally high ceilings, a great looking bar along the left hand wall and Asian artefacts strategically placed throughout the room to give it that authentic look. Walked in and after a few minutes greeted by a staff member and taken to our table. We opted to sit on the counter top in front of the show kitchen, which gave us a perfect opportunity to watch the chefs work their magic. I was excited to see the menu, and it didn't disappoint. Well balanced and every dish sounded awesome. We ordered the curried potato cakes with lemon and five spice mayonnaise, Nyonya style fried pop corn chicken, Pork and Chive wontons and the Coconut Malay Beef Rendang. First to arrive was the popcorn chicken. I have mix feelings about this dish. The flavour are there and had a great dipping sauce, but the chicken was a little inconsistent. Some dry, others cooked perfectly. It felt like the chicken had been cooked then reheated. By no means was it a bad dish, just a little disappointed. Our second dish to arrive was the Curried Potato Cakes. Wow I loved these. Crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, and full of flavour. The lemon and five spiced mayonnaise - awesome and really complemented the potato cakes. The Pork and Chive wontons arrived next. Now I've had my share of dumplings, both locally and throughout Asia, and I must say these are up there with the best. The skins, delicate and silky and the pork filling moist and full of flavour - sensational. Our final dish was the Malay Coconut Rendang. WOW WOW WOW this dish was amazing. Hands down the best Rendang I have ever eaten. The beef so tender and just packed full of flavours. It was simply perfect. The service was great, and our waiter was always on hand to help us through the menu. She made sure that each dish was to our liking and all dishes delivered in a timely manner. This is a good solid restaurant. Great food, great service and a really cool atmosphere. I can't wait to return and sample the rest of the menu.

Yelp
Another winner on Chapel St. Thankfully only had to wait 10 minutes for a table of 3 on a Saturday night (albeit the table was teeny tiny). Great food, drinks and vibe.

Yelp
I have been reading about Hawker Hall before it even opened and I have been dying to come here, needless to say I am from South East Asia so I was very excited about the dishes they will be offering here and of course being a fan of Chin chin and Kong, this is my next expedition. As you walked in, it felt like a huge hall as the name implies, music is blasting (sometimes it feels the music is a tad loud to have a proper quiet conversation but we got over that. There are so much dishes from back home that I wanted to try but since there were only 2 of us, there is only a limited dishes we can order. We were seated at the bar where we watch the bar tender makes drinks, the pink sangria looks delicious but we didn't order that as it came in a jug. We settle on the nasi goreng (fried rice), morning glory with belachan, popcorn chicken and the chilli calamari. Food wise, my thoughts were: - Nasi goreng. my question is, why is there frozen veggies here? And pea, my pet hate is peas and we dot put peas in our fried rice. The rice overall is a little too soggy. - Morning glory with belachan. This is supposed to be a bit spicy, a bit salty, but the dish overall was too sweet, but this is still my favourite vegetables in the whole world. - Popcorn chicken chicken bits, nothing special and its good. - Chilli calamari - my fav of the day. This is spicy enough, tender enough and it's very moreish. Overall, this isn't really authentic Asian food and servings aren't very big, but I have to say I really love the ambience here. Its hip but not pretentious. And there are moscato from innocent bystander (my favourite) on tap. I will definitely give this place another go! And this tim maybe have a glass or two of moscato or even the sangria. I want to give this place 4 stars!

Yelp
Hawker Hall will be compared to its sister restaurant, Chin Chin, and it should. The similarities are steep and that is a very good thing. Clean, open spaces and lots of dining tables with indoor and outdoor seating, as well as bar seating. I liked the use of space and decor was modern, with just the right hint of hawker style. The menu is equally as impressive as Chin Chin, a long list of entrees and mains, sides and desserts. Check out the drink list, where you are guaranteed to find something - cocktails, beer or wine. Stand out dishes were the CKT noodles (similar to Pad Thai) and the pork and chive wonton with chilli (not spicy just flavourful). The curries come with rice but the portion is a bit small for a main. However, if you are sharing all dishes and satisfied with a sampling of each, you will be fine. What could have taken this to 5 stars would be the service. While our server was friendly, she seemed too busy to recognise simple queues like when empty glasses needed to be taken and thus replaced with more drinks, or when we were done with the meal and uncertain where to pay. (Note: Unlike Chin Chin, they will take payment at the table.) If they can make their service more efficient it might save on the wait time, although we got lucky before 7pm on a week night with no queue.

Yelp
This is a lovely place to eat the food here was delicious we have the "feed me" banquet and the plates of food never stopped coming there was a great variety and we hinted on a couple of dishes that we wanted to try and weren't disappointed. This is a nice big place and there's lots of room. The staff were very friendly and attentive and kept us well satisfied. There was not a huge amount of hot spicy food that we got but there was some on the menu if you want a bit of kick. There is a huge amount of tap beer to try and keep u happy. Hawker hall is run by the same people that run Chin Chin and you can so the resemblance in the quality of the food. A little hard to find a park but a good walk after a big feed is always good. Would return here in a heart beat. Yummy food go and dig in and try it you won't regret it.

Yelp
This place is really good. We came here for a work event and everything was great. All the dishes we had were very good and the service was great. The staff was super friendly and took care of everything. Off the main room upstairs is a great Karaoke room. One note is you better love cilantro... not sure if you can ask them to hold back on the cilantro, but it is heavily loaded.

Yelp
Hawker Hall lived up to the hype! All I had heard were great things and I wasn't disappointed! I was worried about the wait to get a table but I walked straight in and got a spot for two at the bar situated right in front of the open galley kitchen. Great view of the magic happening as the chefs, slice, dice and toss all the ingredients in red hot woks. The food was amazing with plenty to choose from and large range of beers on tap, cocktails and other beverages. The space has been styled well with a variety of different seating options to suit any persons preference. Hawker Hall is a must try!

Yelp
Well well well. You all know how much I love a place that gives me a 'wow' and Hawker Hall did just that! Staff were absolutely amazing. Indulging in conversation and making sure our dining experience was the best it could/should be. Food: pulled pork lettuce cups to start. Pork was succulent and tasty accompanied by a tasty plum dipping sauce. Oxtail dumplings, out of this world, if you have them don't forget to dip in their soy sauce. Five spice chicken and coconut salad just blew my tastebuds to pieces. I want this everyday. Flavor Flavor Flavor! We then had the Nasi Goreng and seriously for a moment I was transported back to Bali. So authentic. Then came the Hoi Sin pork with bok choy, a big winner. We then had the Black pepper pineapple with whiskey ice cream. Perfect way to end a sensational meal. Cocktails are on point. I had the gin cucumber cooler which had a nice hint of coriander. I actually had 4 of those. Atmosphere is funky. Not too loud. Toilets are as they should be. Unisex. With the sounds of a language interpreter explaining how speak Malaysian. Unique touch. We absolutely loved Hawker Hall. I would almost go as far as saying it's better than Melbournes institution of Chin Chin. I say this as the menu is more varied. Well done Lucas Group. You just broke Windsor to pieces, in a great way! The bar has been set.

Yelp
About 50 people from work (well, three actually but that doesn't sound anywhere near as compelling) mentioned to me over the last week or two that they had tried to get into a new restaurant at the Windsor end of Chapel Street called Hawker Hall. Tried and failed as it turns out, because the place has been filled to capacity every time. Naturally I had to find out why. As luck would have it the Saturday lunch crowd was somewhat thinner than that previously reported, and although still almost full they managed to find room for me at the banquette in front of the window facing the street. Hawker Hall (as the name suggests) is big. Really big. Almost warehouse dimensions with enough seating for around 160 people. Polished granite floors, exposed brick walls painted off white with a bar running along one and bright orange letters spelling "Forever Independent" mounted on the other, and an open kitchen in the back corner. The food (as the name also suggests) is Malaysian and Singapore Hawker fare with all the oriental goodies you'd expect; a range of dumplings and buns, roti, a variety of noodle dishes, curries and stir fries. I started off with a serve of chicken satay skewers. I had to wait a little while for these to arrive, but it was well worth it. The dish comprised four quite generous sticks with some fresh cucumber and diced onion on the side. A lot of chicken satay I've had in other restaurants has been quite dry and stringy, but the meat here is delicious, moist and succulent. And the sauce was even better if that's possible. I kept trying to think of a better version of this dish that I'd had before but honestly couldn't. Really, really good. For main I tried one of the noodle dishes - Char Kwei Teow - which was made with prawns, lup cheong sausage and smoky soy sauce. Another winner. Very tasty. So tasty in fact that it's probably better eaten by itself than as an accompaniment to another dish. The smokiness of the soy was quite apparent in the flavour, and the finely diced red chilli provided a lovely mild after burn which was nicely offset by a couple of glasses of Pink Sangria Great food, great atmosphere and great service. Not hard to see why my friends had such a hard time getting in.

Yelp
Honestly, I really want to love Hawker Hall. I do love the vibe of the place, the fast service but the food was pretty average in presentations which mimic the real hawker food but if they want to take hawker food to the next level, I expect something beautifully presented, flavourful with punching flavours. I don't know if I order the wrong thing but I won't be dreaming of getting back to Hawker Hall anytime soon. Don't get me wrong, it's not the food taste bad but it's not the hawker food I was expecting. Hakwer food is known for their punching flavours, rich with spices. There are plenty of other Malaysian places where you can get cheaper hawker food with rich taste. Hawker hall clearly have a lot of potential to be so much more, I hope they grow into even more successful restaurant in the future.

Yelp
This place is where it's at. The food is off the hook amazing, the service is brilliant, cocktails are addictive and the atmosphere is terrific. The food has the ability to transport you to another place. There were several dishes that made me feel like i was in another country - Nasi Goreng for one. I could have sworn i was in a warung in bali. Hawker hall lives up to its promise of the food being inspired by the vibrant street-food culture. Its rare these days that you find something new that makes you want to return the very next day. Hawker hall did that too me. I am still having food fantasies about the shredded 5 spice chicken salad with coconut and the Char Siu Pork with Bok Choy. Pan Fried, Rolled Dumplings of Braised Oxtail were meaty and full of flavour. Just remember to dip it in some soy sauce. Don't worry though the staff are more than happy to give you a run down on every dish, which was refreshing. I can not wait to return to Hawker Hall to try some more of the menu. 10/10

Yelp
Pre opening night. The food was delicious, the atmosphere awesome and the people amazing. That's the best way to describe this new upbeat addition to the Lucas Groups new digs. Chef Benjamin Cooper has made good work of the menu and some slick design will see this place hard to get into.

Yelp
Gentrified street food. The flavors are authentic enough, but the prices and serving sizes are anything but. If you like dining in a crowded barn with noise and plastic cups like the rest of the beautiful people on Chapel st you'll love it too. It's interior is well done. The staff are good. Not too arrogant. The illuminated signs with the Asian graphics are a nice touch. I like it better than chin chin. Beware the 1am close claim. They knock off much earlier than that Sunday nights at least.

Yelp
When your only complaint is the music being too loud (and some consideration given to their wait staff for their first week) the place is close to full marks. Food lacks the punch of Chin Chin, but delivers on Singaporean Hawker Hall favourites extremely well. We got the HH Feast/Feed Me and were delivered a wide range of Asian treats. A must do.

Yelp
Food was pretty decent with a good range of beers on offer. Quite pricey and portions were on the small size. Would need two mains and an entree for a decent feed which means you would have to spend 35 plus per head including a drink.

Yelp
New addition to the Windsor restaurant list with attractive fit out, knowledgeable table staff and delicious food. Particularly crowded in the evening so be prepared to wait. Lunchtime is better, with pretty speedy service. Five spiced shredded chicken salad and Morning glory, red chilli and belachan are two of my favourite dishes. Music was deafening on my first visit so we moved outside. Second visit it seemed not quite so loud, so maybe they've listened to complaints. Music volume is the only reason I'm not giving this terrific place 5 stars. Oh, and in keeping with traditional hawker style dining, they don't serve coffee.

Yelp
Once you get into the place you'll find out that it's worth the wait. Very trendy restaurant on the better end of chapel st (Windsor) with delicious street foods from around Asia. Great for groups, dates or with friends and good food for sharing. Definitely recommend the popcorn chicken, prawn dumplings and Kwai Tao noodles. The only downside was when I went there they seated us at one of the tiny bench tables they have- very cool and on point with the Asian street food vibe but unfortunately not that comfortable.

Yelp
If busy noisy fun place with great food is for you, this is the place. Had a great set of share plates, way to go.

Yelp
Amazing! Get there early, you'll have to get your number on the list - we waited 1.5 hours - which, some may say is excessive. However, now you know, you can get there early and have a couple of pre dinner drinks at a nearby bar before coming back to eat a delightful modern interpretation of asian (Malaysian) cuisine. The food was amazing and I am going back with my Malay relatives for sure. What a treat!

Yelp
Everything about this place is a winner. Loved the food. Loved the beer selection. Loved the whole look and feel of the place, staffed by very friendly and helpful staff. A winner. A must visit. We certainly will be repeat offenders.

Yelp
Pretty good food. Nice and close for most and very reasonably priced. Make sure you give this place a try one evening.

Yelp
With so much hype, and people clamoring for a table every week, I thought this place would be jaw dropping. Whilst I may have had my expectations too high, this place fell a little short for me. Don't get me wrong, the service was great, the food was delicious but it wasn't WOW. After waiting over an hour to be seated, I was ready to dive into the menu and see what all the fuss was about. Very simple food, it was delicious but I guess I was expecting a bit more. Plus you felt a bit rushed to eat and leave. The cocktails were great though, I had an Old Fashioned with chilli and it was mind blowing - definitely more on par with what i was expecting. I would go again but not during any peak times - the wait definitely clouded the experience for me.

Yelp
Came here when it first opened. I wasn't a massive fan of the food. They were also having teething issues with the orders and ended up doubling or order. I would prefer chin chin it's sister restaurant. The fit out was amazing and the atmosphere was good too. Great for a few drinks before a night out

Yelp
Wasnt that impressed! Didnt live up to the hype. Food was ok but nothing I would rave about. Just didn't have that great flavour explosion you get from their sister restaurant Chin Chin!

Yelp
Thank you Hawker Hall for being a bustling, playful and soulful spot to experience delicious food. From dumplings to popcorn chicken, beef short ribs, char kwai teow and nasi goreng - we tried several dishes and the flavours blew me away. Loved the white ale recommended by our waiter. Save room for dessert - the back pepper pineapple with whiskey ice cream was perfection after a fun evening! We'll be back to try more dishes at this new knock-out Melbourne food experience. Congrats Exec Chef Benjamin Cooper and Head Chef Damian Snell...I'm hungry after writing this review so I think I'll be back sooner rather than later!

Yelp
A 45 minute wait just to discover they have got their basics all wrong or rather confused by promising Singapore hokkien mee and delivering mee goreng. We ordered Otak Otak and it turned out to be baked salmon. We ordered the oyster omelette but it is no where the same as what you get in Singapore. Instead, you will get friends omelette wrapped in raw bean sprouts and 1 or 2 raw oysters. If you are looking for authentic Singaporean food, this restaurant have over promised and under delivered. The loud music and dim lights in the restaurant doesn't make the ambience any better. On the upside , very friendly and helpful waitresses who are willing to take in constructive feedback and willing to improve on the authencity of the food.

Yelp
Service was lovely for the most part. The portion sizes were very small compared to the usual Roti Road, Laksa King or any restaurants in Kensington or Footscay. The flavours were quite nice overall and nice n spicy, so ask if you are wanting to purchase any dishes for kids.

Yelp
We ordered few dishes to share and ordered couple of curry dishes and asked for two portions of plain rice to share as well. The curry dishes came with half curry and half rice in one dish....it looked terrible as the curry is laready mixing with the curry ....when we told the waiter ....hey who serve like this ? His answer was ....Oh just that you know ...we are not Chin Chin. Last vist from me and my friends

Yelp
Firstly sat down in a nice ambience, with neon lights and an open kitchen, the restaurant stands out with its service. We moved to a booth because there was more room to place dishes and eat. I ordered a Shiki Lager which had a nice taste on tap and was refreshing. The food came quite quickly after around 15 minutes and this was at a busy time. It was cooked very hot and had lots of flavour. First was the five spiced chicken salad, this dish was one of the best with a refreshing taste and the chicken was very soft and flavoursome. 9/10. The popcorn chicken came next with a satay sauce. Was very delicious 7/10. The vegetable dumplings came next. It reminded us of my grandma's "Tei" with its glutenous pastry but the filling wasn't amazing 6/10. The potato cakes came next. Very good 8/10. Sauce also good. The Portuguese devil chicken curry was next and it was very spicy but had a good tomatoey flavour with it. 9/10. The egg noodles came next. Bit boring but was cooked well. 5/10. The penang duck curry was very good with the duck texture being soft and juicy 9/10. The smashed chicken was refreshing 7/10 with the hainanese chicken coming last. So flavoursome with the chicken being crispy and soft on the inside. 9/10. Desserts came next and must comend the coconut ice cream, very flavoursome. Overall the experience was a 9/10 and the prices were not on the expensive side. The bill came to around $200 for 5 people but we ate alot. Very good restaurant and would recommend to others!!

Yelp
SOMEONE please teach MARCO the difference between his version of customer service and actual customer service. Ordered a meal using UBEREATS. 2 items were missed. Called HH who went straight into pass the buck mode. Without any advanced notice to grab a pin he began to rhyme off the 1800 number to call UBEREATS. I interrupted him to tell him I actually wanted the missing items that the meals are incomplete. He then told me if I wanted the missing items I would have to order again. I'm sure it's not possible to order condiments but it was very obvious Marco didn't care either way. He just wanted the call to end. After that I was given a rundown of how mistakes happen (Could not have been more patronising) followed by voluntary confirmation of his name for when I leave this review. What an arrogant pr%#k!!! Quick hint for future reference Marco: we all know mistakes happen - just act like you care and try and help. After all it was you guys that messed up. I've ordered from HH a number of times but because of Marco's lack of care I won't be again. On the plus side UBEREATS were great to deal with.

Yelp
Great food but dishes are on the small side. That said, the prices are alright, not too expensive. Unfortunately, like too many 'in' places, they don't take reservations, so you have to either turn up really early or be prepared to wait an hour or more for a table

Paris M.

Yelp
Everything was great, including the food, drinks, staff and atmosphere. All of the food that we ordered was excellent. No complaints. The waitress we had was lovely, she was very cheerful and helpful. Overall, great experience.

Yelp
Food is yummy However I wouldn't get the banquet as you don't get anywhere near the amount of food you would had you have chosen 2 dishes each and shared. Watermelon & coconut slushy is yum!

Yelp
Yum, yum, yum. Shared several dishes between three of us in order to taste as much as possible. I hope to get back there soon!

Yelp
Food was tasty but the servings were small and we were rushed along so they could reset the table for the next patrons

Yelp
Okay so wow. After having a number of misses in Melbourne this trip, I was glad I checked this place out. Based on Malaysian and Singaporean street food in cuisine and style, this place offers a great selection of food that is pretty close to authentic. We had the popcorn chicken - amazing with this slightly spicy dipping sauce - roti with sauce (satay and an eggplant sambal) - nasi goreng and beef rendang. Now I've eaten my fair share of nasi and rendang and these were pretty, pretty, pretty good. However spicy. This was where the night took a strange turn, because our waitress, who had been very attentive until the food was served, forgot to replace the water jug when requested and I couldn't finish my meal!! When we finally gave up and asked for the bill (which took 20 minutes to arrive) we watched the table next to us have their water bottle changed without asking. It was funny, but annoying. I clearly wasn't good looking enough.
